The man that no one could subdue is subdued by Jesus at a distance. A woman with a disease no doctor could heal is healed by Jesus without His awareness. A death that people could only mourn is healed by a mere word, perhaps even with a smirk from Jesus. September 24, 2023 Topical Sermons of 2023 Amusing Ourselves to Death Mark 12:29-31 Pastor Jim Rutherford
When it comes to ministry, we can't put Jesus in a box.
When it comes to ministry, we can't put Jesus in a box.
Mark 5:21-43 English Standard Version Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter 21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?'” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” 35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[b] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. Matthew 16:21-26 (CWSB)Jesus Must Die (Mark 8:31-9:1; Luke 9:22-27)21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense unto me: for thou savorest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?Matthew 27:45-53 (CWSB)Jesus' Death (Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49; John 19:28-30)45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?47 -- Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elijah.48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.49 -- The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.50 -- Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.Matthew 28:1-15 (CWSB)Jesus Is Risen (Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10)1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.3 -- His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.8 And they departed quickly from the sepulcher with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him.10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.11 Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and showed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.12 And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.14 And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.15 So they took tPower To Change Ministry Rev. Text: Mark 15:1-15 The Question of Authority and Kingdom (Mark 15:1-5) Jesus affirms His kingship. Jesus explains His otherworldly Kingdom (John 18:33-38). Gospel Implication: Pilate is amazed by Jesus' presence, but will not give allegiance to Jesus' authority. The Exchange of Jesus and Barabbas (Mark 15:6-11) During the Feast of Passover, it was typical for the Romans to grant a prisoner pardon. The Jewish crowd chooses to release Barabbas over Jesus. Gospel Implication: How Jesus stands in the place of condemned sinners. The Verdict of Scourging and Death (Mark 15:12-15) The Sanhedrin influences the crowd to cry out for the crucifixion of Jesus. Pilate scourges Jesus and delivers Him to be crucified. Gospel Implication: “What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” (Matthew 27:22)
Text: Mark 14:53-65 A Secret Trial of Conspiracy (Mark 14:53-60) The trial was shrouded in deception and injustice at every level. The religious leaders assembled the evidence from false witnesses to get their intended verdict. Jesus' intentional silence during the trial fulfills prophecy (Isaiah 53:7) A Startling Revelation of Lordship (Mark 14:61-62) Jesus breaks His silence to answer the question about His identity. Jesus declares Himself to be the Son of God and Lord of all. A Scornful Condemnation of Death (Mark 14:63-65) Jesus' declaration of Lordship is met with accusations of blasphemy. Jesus' death sentence is followed by merciless mocking, spitting, and beatings.
What would you do if you knew you were about to die? What final words or gestures would you want to leave behind with those you love? The Bible shows us that Jesus was deliberate with His last hours and used that time to teach, train, equip and prepare His followers for life after the resurrection. In this episode, Marian Jordan Ellis walks through Mark 14:1-25. She highlights 7 powerful encounters and teachable moments Jesus shared with the disciples before His death and how He used the Passover meal to illustrate the New Covenant. Mike Bowers' sermon from 22 Jan 2023 at the Clarence Church of Christ, Clarence, NY: One Day With Jesus: The Impact of Jesus' Death (Mark 15)
Mark 15:1-47 In Mark's account of Jesus' death, we see that Jesus' sacrifice on our behalf was painful and purposeful.
As we continue our series on the Authority of Christ, Pastor Lucas Pinckard shares a story from the Gospel of Mark. Jairus, a synagoguge leader comes to Jesus because his 12yr old daughter is ill and on her deathbed. He begs for Jesus to help. Not only does Jesus immeditaely go with Jairus, but He does an incredible miracle to show all who were there that He truly is God. When Jesus foretells his death for the third time, James and John make a remarkably selfish request: "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." Today we're going to continue through Paul's sermon series in the gospel of Mark, and in this message, Paul discusses why the other disciples were angry for the wrong reasons and why we may have made the same request if we were in their shoes. If you've been enjoying The Paul Tripp Podcast, please leave us a review! This week’s theme reminds us that there’s more than one kind of death in the Bible; it speaks of physical death, spiritual death and eternal death. Jesus demonstrates that no matter how many kinds of death there are, he is always strong to make the dead alive!
