This week we sat down with another miracle story of survival and A Close Call With Death for Lori Higbee. Back in 1994 Lori was 16 years old and had plans to spend some fun in the sun on Utah Lake with her friends. While out Jet Skiing, a storm blew in and created dangerous conditions that ultimately stalled the craft her and her friend were on and engine stopped. Wayne Roberts. Miracle. It was mind blowing to meet Wayne. I was told he had a tragic ski accident just a couple of months prior to a meeting with him and he was walking, talking, and mixing with a group of people without much physical impairment or any mental impact. Wayne looked normal as can be and yet, Wayne had wrecked while skiing at Solitude Ski area on an icy double black diamond run and even being a ski instructor, he went down hard! Wayne hit so hard on his face that it broke his neck and then slammed into a grove of trees head first where the damage continued. Wayne guarded his head with his arm and when he smashed into the trees, it broke his arm completely and his back! 21 bones broke in total. 4-5 broken ribs and bruised lungs on top of that. Wayne's son Dillon was by his side the whole time and remained stoic and brave at the age of 14. This story resonates pain, healing, and bravery + love. So happy Wayne is here today to tell us his story and is healing well. Tune in to hear his story. Thanks Wayne for your story!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

This session is the first of Season #3, A Close Call With Death, providing some personal commentary and a personal close call as this new season gets kicked off. I wanted to first thank all of our listeners from Season 1 and 2 and growing with us through a recovery year of 2021 where we heard from many people with fascinating stories of challenges, struggles, dissappointments, and close calls that caused them to over time, gain strength and growth that made them just a little bit taller and stronger. These stories capture those that gained strength from their experiences and I am one that has benefited and have been extremely blessed by them. The conversations have been powerful and touching and every time I sit down with someone, it becomes like a purging, release, healing and vulnerable session. I am so grateful for the time others have taken to share these stories and I have heard feedback that people are hearing and relating to what they have heard and it is making an impact for good in others lives. This year, there will be some diversity in close calls to include not only those that have experienced a close call but, have been close to others that have nearly died or have died and moved on and what did that impact do to influence their attitude and outlook on what life they have ahead of them. I will be talking with Doctors / Nurses, First Responders, Rangers, Firefighters, Morticians, Athletes, etc. Again, thank you for listening in and sharing these stories. There are those out there that need to hear these stories and could use some inspiration and strength through others. Let's all grow and gain more love and closeness with each other in this new year. Until we hear from each other again, "Stay Alive to Tell About It!" --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
Sadie Hawkes, age 37 is a strong athlete I have come to know in a daily workout routine at the Orange Theory Gym here in Utah, where her mom, Susan Anderson comes all the way across town to work out at 6:00 am with her daughter. Sadie is strong and competitive and that personality is most likely the grit it took to overcome the powerful adversity of prescription drug abuse and addiction starting at a young age. Overcoming the intense need for drugs and fighting off crippling waves of depression related to the addiction, Sadie shares what it was like to fight this battle, and her mom, Susan chimes in from a mother's perspective what it was like during those years that nearly took Sadie away. This story will test your heart strength. Thank you both for a very vulnerable interview and allowing me to experience what you went through. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
Fatu Matagi. - What an inspiring story of the brother to Sam Matagi from episode #11. Sam lost both arms in a tragic accident where over 7,000 volts of electricity went through him resulting in both arms having to be amputated. Today, I talk to Fatu Matagi, the brother of Sam, who in a very similar accident lost his right arm having the same 7,000 + volts of electricity ran through his body causing him to have his right arm amputated. Fatu shares his journey with me and tells how his life was before, and how his life is now, after this terrible accident. Fatu's power pole lineman co-worker and friend he worked with every day was killed, leaving Fatu the lone survivor of that day. How does a person get through it all? How do two brothers cope and help each other and others along the way? This strong, brave, and full of grit young man shares how you do it in a powerful yet humble way. That incident, that day, does not define Fatu. He writes his own story and it was a gift to me to be able to talk with this extraordinary human being. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
I met Cheyenne Schwein while in Alaska with a group of friends spending a week in the wild catching Silver Coho Salmon and Halibut. I was telling the group about my podcast A Close Call With Death when Cheyenne said, "I have a story of death and I think it would be an interesting story". Cheyenne had her best friend literally die in front of her while playing soccer and celebrating a goal and one moment there and one moment gone. What does a young girl at 12 years of age do at that moment and how does her life play out going forward. Is there a forward and what kind is it? Tune in to this moving discussion with a very interesting and strong willed individual. Thank you Cheyenne for the talk! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

In this episode I sat down with Matt Oehler again for a part 2 because in the first recording, Matt shared with me the intense experience he had as a young man in New York actually witnessing 911 as it happened. Then, offering aid as a trained Marine reserve attend to the injured and the dead that day, to going full time into the Marines to serve our country in Iraq surviving one of the areas most deadly attacks on his group to now, years later having served our country again as a law enforcement officer putting his life on the line year after year and what we can learn from that. We ran out of time in the first session and part two needed to be heard. As I sat and listened to Matt unfold his story of law enforcement, I realized even more clearly that he is a good man, a husband, father, and son. He loves to serve others. He would do anything to help another in trouble. And we sit back and hear judgement against these good men and women to serve and this behind the scene needed to be heard by not only me but anyone out there wanting to know some truth about these heroic people! Matt had many close calls with death in these years of Laws enforcement and he saw death take place all around him for years. That changes ones perspective on life and how precious it is. Matt gets that! Thanks again Matt for your devoted service to all of us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

Nikki has a fascinating story of surviving a traumatic accident in New York City where she was hit by a car while walking through an intersection at night near China Town. Nikki flew over 30 feet ultimately landing on her head causing extensive damage to her left side of her head and suffering from major damage to bones and vital organs on her left side. Nikki has survived this accident and is still alive to share with us how you get though something like that and still go on and love others and stay vital in the success of others around her in this life. Nikki is one tough and resilient person and it was a pleasure to sit down with her. Thank you Nikki! *This recording has some technical issues with added vibration and added double voice. That goes away quickly. Thank you for understanding as this story would have been difficult to record all over again. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message

Audrey Overton walked into the recent networking meeting I was in and told a short story of how she has a uniqueness about her as she bit her tongue off when she was a child AND, had a terrible near death car accident that nearly took her life. I knew my show needed to record her story. This session will unfold how this life threatening event played out and why Audrey is here today to talk about it. Thanks Audrey for being on the show! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
Teri Benson is our guest on the show bringing with her the story of her Aortic Dissection. This heart and major heart valve / artery malfunction left her without a heartbeat for over 25 minutes as a talented surgical team operated on her for 18+ hours and brought her not only back to life, but she was able to continue her active life ever since. Teri has written a book called "How my ordinary became extraordinary," telling her story of going from healthy and active to near death in a moment. This story is hers of fighting back and living to tell about it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
Our special guest today is Jeff Smith. Jeff is a great man and a "Serial Entrepreneur" in life. Jeff has grown and exited some great Utah companies and is currently Chairman of the Board of Jet Dental that he and his son Jordan currently President, created a few years ago. The cool thing is that Jeff donates large sums of money to some wonderful causes like Make A Wish, ShelterKids, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Operation Underground Railroad! Jeff does a lot of good for others and perhaps this Close Call With Death has prompted him to even more. Jeff and his other son Josh were in Kauai Hawaii in 2004 hiking the Na Pali Coast trail when their family of 5, Jeff, his wife Sandee, and their three kids, came to Kanakapi ai Beach about 2 miles in. Josh, then 14 years of age goes out into the waters for a swim in Rip Tide conditions prior to Jeff and his wife and family arriving. Josh got sucked out in a rip tide with 16 foot waves crashing in and when he was in trouble, Jeff jumped into the scenario and both became dangerously close to death in a battle of time, brutal conditions, and a fight for survival. This story will blow your mind. Hug your children and your spouse just a little tighter tonight and just imagine what it would have been for you to have gone through this experience like they did! Jeff is an avid family man, traveler, golfer, mountain climber, and surfer!!! You will feel Jeff's energy and his love for his son and family --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
