This mutation increased the likelihood of cancer in Stacy and her siblings. Stacy describes the moment she discovered she was CDH1 positive, the challenges she faced afterward, and the lessons she learned through the clinical trial process. No longer having a stomach, Stacy has to eat more frequently to keep her energy up. Send us a textStomach cancer, often referred to as gastric cancer, is a sneaky cancer.  Its symptoms can be easily mistaken for more benign conditions like indigestion or acid reflux, making early detection a challenge. In our latest podcast episode, we delve into this complex disease with the help of two esteemed experts: gastroenterologist Dr. Walid Chaloub, and Dr. Ritu Mukherji, a medical oncologist from MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute in D.C. Host Debra Schindler explores the biology of stomach cancer with her physician guests to understand how mutations in the DNA of stomach cells can lead to uncontrolled growth and tumor formation. This formidable disease often goes unnoticed until it has advanced significantly, highlighting the critical need for awareness and early detection. Dr. Mukherji shares the various risk factors associated with stomach cancer, including smoking, diet, and certain bacterial infections like H. Pylori. She emphasizes the importance of molecular testing in diagnosing and treating this disease, as it can reveal specific mutations that may be targeted with personalized therapies. The episode also explores the different diagnostic tools available, such as endoscopy and CT scans, and the role of tumor markers in assessing the presence of cancer. While these tools are invaluable, Dr. Mukherji stresses that they are not foolproof, underscoring the importance of comprehensive testing and expert analysis. One of the most enlightening parts of the discussion is the potential for treatment and even cure. While surgery is a common approach, not all patients are candidates. The podcast highlights the evolving role of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies, offering hope to those battling this disease. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the symptoms to watch for, the importance of genetic predispositions, and the latest advancements in treatment. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in learning more about stomach cancer, whether for personal knowledge or to support a loved one. Tune in to this informative episode to arm yourself with the knowledge needed to recognize the signs of stomach cancer early and explore the treatment options available. Your Health, or that of someone you care about, could depend on it.---For more episodes of MedStar Health DocTalk, go to medstarhealth.org/doctalk.

Tom Edmunds arrived in our Soulhub world a few years before he actually arrived. What we mean by that, is we met his mum Deborah back in 2020 just before the pandemic, and then 3 years on, we received the call no mother wants to make. “Help.”Tom was given a cancer diagnosis out of nowhere. He was experiencing pain, which as we've got to know him well, realise that he level of pain management is extremely high so it must have been a strong indicator that something was wrong. He was told that not only did he have Level 4 Bowel, Liver and Stomach Cancer, but that his life expectancy would be about 6 months. Tom was 39 years old. He has two children, and he was in a fairly new relationship with the love of his life Esme, and she also has 2 children. Many people loved Tom, and as we've experienced each day, he touches hundreds of lives and is loved way beyond his immediate circle. We (Carmen & Andrew) met Tom and Esme for a walk and talk, and shared how we felt we could support them. We gave a wide directory of people and options, and he was quick to say, that we were his team. It was time for him to ‘get some control back'.Since November 2023, we've been Team Tom. This is an unusual ‘Soul Story' as sharing the experience of someone who's within our therapeutic care isn't the normal done thing. But Tom is extraordinary, and how he's managing himself and his cancer is a story we felt was important to share wider.Andrew Cuerden is your host, and together with Tom, they explore and cover Tom's back story and his present day thinking. Why he came to therapy, what he gets from it, and why he'd love more to step on this path to self-understanding.We have learnt that we can control our thoughts. That we can utilise our mindsets to control certain aspects. I deploy the tools that I have been given. He's travelled through a few very-near death experiences, hyperbaric chambers, chemotherapy, sepsis, cancer spreading to his intestines. Perforations, and poo stories are a regular occurrence in his house. He was in a fight (controlled in his favourite gym) weeks after his diagnosis, he's still working and restoring the family home and making time for his healing and reflections.Thank you for listening to Tom Edmunds' Soul Story. This recording is public so feel free to share it with those who you know would appreciate his words.Thank you Tom for your continual openness and we hope as listeners you get a real sense of what Tom is experiencing and who he's becoming as life throws curve balls at him.To follow Tom's journey, you can see him here on his Instagram @OldTomNewTom and if you'd like to donate to support his charitable fundraising for Phyllis Tuckwell. We'd love to have you back and go deeper into your experience. Ep30: Nurses: The Powerful Future of Functional Medicine Highlights"When you use functional medicine, you find the "why" for someone, and it is always about their lifestyle, their exposures, their thought processes, everything that really aligned with Nurse Coaching for me, because I was able to help people guide through that process. It was really fundamental Nursing practice. I realized that RNs are really the future of functional medicine, in my opinion. The skills we get in Nursing school just need to be lit up, and we can really help people heal."  ~Brigitte Sager, MSN, RN, ARNP, FNP-C, NCMP, NC-BCAh-Ha'sThe functional medicine model is a personalized, patient-centered, science-based approach empowering patients and practitioners to become partners to promote optimal wellness and address underlying causes of disease.
