Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards or adding contacts on LinkedIn. Companies who focus on cultivating connections experience higher retention and growth when employees are engaged. This profound message resonates throughout the latest episode of HerCsuite® Radio, where host Natalie Benamou sits down with networking strategist, author and speaker, Diane Darling, to discuss how employees crave connection.5 Networking Power Tips:1. **Have a Role**: Diane suggests taking on a role at the networking event to avoid feeling like an "unemployed networker." Whether it's introducing the speaker, picking them up from the airport, or handling name tags, having a role gives you a purpose and a reason to engage with others.2. **Pre-Send Yourself**: Before attending the event, reach out to speakers or leaders of the organization on LinkedIn to introduce yourself. This "pre-send" approach allows you to make connections before you even step into the room.3. **Prepare Conversation Starters**: Diane recommends having two or three starter conversations ready to initiate interactions. These could be simple questions like "Tell me how you know the company," or "Tell me your role here." Having these questions at the ready can ease the initiation of dialogue.4. **Approach Individuals**: Look for individuals who are by themselves at the event. Diane refers to this as her "silver bullet" for networking, as it often means the person is approachable and will welcome conversation, helping both of you feel more comfortable.5. **Networking-Friendly Set-Up**: If you're organizing the event, or even if you're just attending, pay attention to how the environment is set up to facilitate interactions. On a corporate level, encourage employees to connect before, and post meetings and events.3 Ways to Create a Networking Culture:1. **Conversation Starters**: Provide employees with tools that include interactive conversation starters. This will encourage employees at every level to engage. Encourage employees to initiate discussions and build connections with colleagues before, during and after meetings or events..2. **Virtual Networking Preparation**: Create a spreadsheet with employees' names, LinkedIn profiles, and interesting personal facts. This will help kickstart conversations and make virtual interactions more personal and engaging.3. **Encourage Proactive Networking**: Suggest employees reach out to colleagues before a meeting or event either virtually or in person. This connection strategy helps employees feel engaged before, during and after a meeting or event.Implementing these strategies can help employees feel more comfortable and engaged in networking opportunities, whether in person or virtual, contributing to a more connected and collaborative workplace culture.Thank you Diane, for being a valued member of HerCsuite® Innovation Women Network Hub and for sharing your wisdom today. Last week I spoke with a Bostonian named Mary who took a trip to Jamaica during Covid where she was dubbed The White Oprah. Mary lives with Multiple Sclerosis and my conversation with her reminded me about a few things. Life is about weighing risk and reward. Mary has MS and is considered a higher risk for Covid, but she also decided that the benefits of taking this trip outweighed the risks in her mind. While I wouldn’t necessarily make that decision, it is important to live life on your own terms (and not judge others for doing so). It’s okay to rely on others for help. Due to issues with mobility, and the fact that she was traveling alone, Mary had to have assistance while making her way through the airport as well as navigating the resort at her destination. There’s no shame in being reliant on others. Find your cheerleaders. Whether a limitation is thrust up on you or created in your own mind, it is important to have cheerleaders who can help you overcome it. This last lesson about limitations reminded me that there was a time when I felt I wasn’t good at networking because I would often leave conferences without landing a new client. While remembering this, I was reminded of a conversation I had with networking expert Diane Darling who taught me that networking is about starting relationships and not signing contracts. I’ve got some great sound clips from that conversation in this episode and I know you are going to love them. As always, thanks for taking the time to listen to uncorking a story. Please subscribe on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts so you can stay up to date with the latest episodes. As always, since the holidays are upon us, I have to remind you that books make great gifts!

Listen now as Diane Darling teaches us how to communicate clearly and connect easily! Diane Darling is just darling. What a wonderful podcast conversation we had. Diane is a pioneer in social networking, and as she tells her story, you'll realize how ironic life can be. To overcome her fear of public speaking, she took acting and stand-up comedy classes. That out-of-the-box mindset and courage to defy the odds transformed her into the successful person she is today. Are you waiting to become the person you want to be? Listen in and start your own journey now! Networking is key to your professional and personal success Back in 2003, McGraw-Hill commissioned Diane to write the definitive book on networking: “The Networking Survival Guide.” Just 90 days after the book hit the shelves, it went into a 2nd printing. Rather amazing. Collectively, Diane's books have been translated into 7 languages. She has taught at Harvard Business School, 20th Century Fox, Cisco Systems, and so many other clients. In our podcast, Diane tells you her tips for successfully networking. How do you, like Diane, walk through an airport and meet famous people standing in line, just like you, waiting to board a plane? As she tells us, she turned around and her bag hit this short woman. Who was she? Dr. Ruth! So, what did Diane do? Apologized and asked if she could interview her. Diane tells another story about network development for physicians. She was at a conference and was talking to one doctor while watching another one standing over on the side. She escorted the doctor she was speaking with over to the one who was by himself and introduced herself. Next thing you know, they were all talking and sharing experiences and ideas. Then there is the story about how Diane sat down on a plane and introduced herself to a stranger. She told the person: "I am not going to talk to you the entire trip, but let’s introduce ourselves and get to know each other before we take off." A nice conversation began and then concluded so that each one could get to their work or reading or movie watching—all with a little networking to begin the flight.
