Why don't we talk 'anxiety'??? (EP 1 of 2024)

It's been a while.... But finally i'm back... My absence will be explained.... Do you ever sit down and ask yourself these questions: - Why do I have anxiety? - Why do I choose to hide my anxiety? - Why don't I want too talk about my anxiety? - Why can't I put my mind at rest? - Why do I find it difficult too drift off too sleep? These are all common questions, that at some point of our lives 99.9% of people will encounter. All these questions + more, is what makes up this episode. One of the big reasons as too why I stopped podcasting for such a long period, was due too my own personal struggle with anxiety. Throughout this episode, I will unravel my own most recent journey with anxiety. Because if there's one thing i've learnt, normalising struggle, and extracting the negative and toxic thoughts from the mind, is the most powerful tool in better not only yourself, but also helping those around you, that may be struggling as well... - Would you believe me if i told you that back in 2019, a banana ducted tape to a wall (what they call a 'piece of art') had been sold for $120,000 at Art Basel (Miami Beach)? - Does the explicit language in RNB and Rap music, have a negative effect on people / does it ultimately shape people? - Is the Magic Mike movie franchise, a toxic representation of how a 'true man' should look physically? - Does the 2023 world, bring forth a sense of repression? - Are we doing enough for 'mental health', in 2023. Is there an apparent positive progressional change? These questions... and MORE, were discussed in detail, in this episode of 'Couching The Mind'... In this episode of CTM, former police officer, and creator of the 'Beenham Valley Road' podcast + 'Tear it Down' mental health series, joins me in conversation around the topic of 'Removing The Badge'. Jamie talks about his past life as a police officer. And how it took him an extension period of time to speak up and talk about his inner struggles. One specific situation was mentioned by Jamie, when he was in the police force. He was called out on a domestic violence job, to check up on a women called Kirra Mcloughlin. Unfortunately, months after the 'check up', things didn't end so well. Listen in to find out more..... He then talks about when he decided to remove the badge, and start a new chapter in his life. To which he then started up his crime podcast series 'Beenham Valley Road, which was about the kirra Mcloughlin scenario, and Jamie's push to find further evidence upon the case. Furthermore, a mental health podcast series, 'Tear It Down' was also developed, not long after. With Jamie's aim being, to 'tear' down the stigma of mental health. To speak up and express your struggles if your needing to. The overall message of this episode is that if your needing to see a health professional, or you just need to speak to a loved one or a close friend about your personal struggles. There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong in doing that.

Scott talks about what it was like when the news first broke to him that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Whilst explaining the aftermath of the negative emotions and feelings that came with the news. Scott also talks about certain mechanisms that had helped to elevaiate his exacerbated depression and anxiety. This was only a minisucal roadblock for Scotty. He also pays mentions to when he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. And how again, his depression and anxiety was brought to the forefront. Scott used to also work in the airline industry. He talks about the impact that covid had had on the industry, and his reasoning as to why he personally thinks that international travel will never be the same again. The overall message of this episode is to learn to role with the punches. Acknowledge the hardship, vent about it. But at some stage you've got to put it behind you, and you have to learn to move on with life.

In this episode of CTM, former Australian long distance swimmer, Tammy Van Wisse, joins me in conversation via Zoom Chat. Tammy talks about how her interest in long distance swimming came about. And what it was like to work with someone like (swimming legend) Dawn Fraser, and Tammys' big night on the whisky with Dawn in Scotland. Plus how Tammy had managed to stay 'in the zone', when swimming long distances, and her incredible understanding of how to cope with hyperthermia, was also mentioned. She infact knew when she was about to go into that 'hyperthermic state', and how to control it. Tammy also discusses how she would break down a long distance swim into small bite size goals. So that way she wouldn't become overwhelmed of the situation, and would then allow herself time to rest when achieving these certain goals along the way. It also gave Tammy a sense of 'mini accomplishment' by achieving these bite sized goals. Over the course of Tammy's career, she's made 6 world records of her own, one of which I personally find to be the standout. Swimming across the English Channel, a distance of 2,500kms, with her brother successfully. To be the first siblings ever to have made it to the 'finish' line, so-to-speak, of the English Channel Swim. Tammy is such a humbling, and infectiously inspiring individual, for what's she's been able to achieve thus far. There is honestly so much to learn from such an amazing person, in Tammy. The overall message of this episode, is that if you put 100% effort into the small incremental steps. That end goal of what your trying to ultimately achieve, will be within arms reach.

In this episode of CTM, Aussie DJ / founder of BAO Collective clothing, Bowdy, joins me in conversation covering the topic of 'When The Music Stops'. Bowdy talks about his upbringing. Living in a very poor and dangerously gang induced area of New Zealand. It was so bad at times, that at aged eight, Bowdy would walk around the neighbourhood with a knife in his pocket (for protection). He then delves into his father's unhealthy addiction for alcohol, violence, and his closed of nature to not wanna he there for his family. Bowdy hit a breaking point within the interview, when he mentions about the fact that as a young boy, he felt like he never fitted in with his family. He broke down in tears. I'm so proud of the man. Very difficult, and a very touchy topic to talk about. How Bowdy got into the DJ scene , upon stumbling across an ad, was also spoken about. He also talks about the 'after party' effect, when the DJ set is done, and all is quiet (again), and your suddenly swimming in your own thoughts. Supposedly this instance has alot of DJ'S struggling. Using music , and the live-light as a band-aid to cover the internal 'mental wounds'. Mr inspirational, as I like to call him, is also trying to change the way that his culture, Samoan's, choose to react in certain situations. More offen then not, physicality and verbility is the chosen reaction by his background. He wants to change this stigma, and help teach his friends, family, and younger peers, how to respond calmfully, and non-pasively. The overall message of this episode is to speak up if your struggling. We've all been through some tough times. But it's about acknowledging the tough times, and or anything else that may be weighing us down.

Whilst also defining what he deems 'fat skinny' to be. Sam (overtime) has inherited the idea of not giving a crap of what others may think of him. The idea of allowing yourself to showcase your inner vulnerability. Sam also talks about how he came to the decision of moving from Country Victoria to Brisbane. As he describes it as a journey of 'seeking discomfort'. Setting attainable short-term goals is also discussed, whilst reaching that point of self acceptance when achieving a certain 'goal'. Sam's next big 'goal' is to be able to go for a long distance run with his shirt off. Not for an ego boost, but as a confidence builder. The main message that is to come out of this episode, is to not be afraid to be you.

'Definition of Man', Featuring Lachie Stuart (founder of 'The Man That Can Project')

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2021 54:30

What a way to start season three of Couching The Mind. With a convincingly big 'bang'. In this episode, Lachie Stuart, founder of 'The Man That Can Project', joins me in conversation via Zoom Chat. Lachie details the purpose of the project, with the mission being to 'to empower men to take ownership of their lives, without the bulls**t'. Whilst highlighting the importance of finding relatability with other guys, with regards to something that you may be struggling with personally. The more relatability there is, the more of a chance that the introverted type guys, will openly speak about there own struggles. Because as men, we love, absolutely love to make excuses, and to shrug away from onus. Another key pointer that Lachie Stuart made, is to be able to identifity when your having a 'bad' day. An example of this instance that was used, was when in the current Tokyo Olympics, Australian cyclist Richie Porte burnt out in the latter stages of the 44km ride. He was asked after his race what caused him to burn out. And to his response he just said that he didn't turn up on the day. And it can be as easy at that. The positives from goal setting, financial self-setting, are also mentioned. If your wanting to attain further self-growth, have a look at the people that you surround yourself around, states Lachie. More offen then not, you tend to mirror-image the actions of your closest mates. The overall message of this episode is to self redefine the once stereotypical depiction of what a man is defined to be. Be the best 'male' version of yourself. Bringing out all the right values that you deem to be of importance. Removing that tough and emotionless stereotype of the 'modern man'.

'Why Not Try?', Featuring Jayden Woolaston (founder + host of Couching The Mind)

In this episode of CTM, founder and host of CTM, Jayden Woolaston goes through the topic of 'Why Not Try'. Jayden shares his own personal experiences of trying something out for the first time. Whether it be a fear, and your pushing your own boundaries, or you've just never had the opptunity to try. Fear is a catalyst for sticking to comfort. Staying comfortable doing the things that you know that won't overly challenge you. However, if your able to push through a certain fear, the silver lining becomes very tasteful. Jayden also expresses the fact that to be able to have the ability to try things out, to give something a go, a sense of self-vulnerability much be present. No matter what you end up doing within your lifetime, there will always be 'haters'. People that gain satisfaction out of putting you down. They may infact be jealous of your achievements, and how well your handling the hurdles of 'life'. Just don't ever succumb to the 'dislikers'. Another key pointer that Jayden vocalises, is that the toughest of situations that we may be faced with, do not define us as a person. We can use these 'low points', as the building blocks of our own self-growth and self-development. The overall message of this episode, is to live life to the fullest, in terms of giving things ago, with the possibility of failure, and to tackle everyday likes it's your last.

In this episode of CTM, Brazillian jiujitsu athlete/coach, Jeff Kowamoto, joins me in conversation via Zoomchat. Jeff talks about his upbringing, and his introduction to BJJ. Paying mention to the everlasting effect that BJJ has had on his own mental state of mind. Expressing that BJJ can allow oneself to remove any inner frustrations, and negative feelings in a safe manner. Jeff also talks about how BJJ can thoroughly teach a women self defence. And for men, it educates men to be respectful. Community within the sport itself, plays a massive role, states Jeff. It doesn't matter how old you are, what your background is, where you come from. People within the BJJ community will accept you for who you are, it's like having a second family. Ego's are also diminished within the sport. Jeff details that, you might be a big and buff, masculine male. But as soon you walk into the gym and embark on your first 'roll' with an experienced BJJ athlete, you'll very quickly learn that size and strength doesn't matter one bit. The overall message of this episode, is to treat others with the same respect that you would like to be treated with. Whether or not you may have had a better upbringing then someone, or your situated in a higher paid occuatpation, we're all equal. Drop the act, drop the judgementing, and bring your thoughts back down to earth. To where everyone is seen as equal.

In this episode of CTM, Sunset Lane Photography owner, Belinda, joins me in conversation on the couch. Belinda talks about the unfortunate situation of having to split up with her now ex husband, which resulted in her having to look after her two sons, as a single parent. At the time, emotions were at a high, and Belinda felt extremely scared and vulnerable with the scenario. However, in the present moment, Belinda is absolutely thriving. Belinda details the point of realisation that helped to pick her back up, providing that much needed self-growth that she had been crying out for. Information with regards to finding that balance between business life , and time with kids as a solo parent, is also mentioned. A key pointer for single parents that may be listening in, to take away from this episode, is to not be afraid to accept help from others. Belinda was very expressive upon the fact that when she had finally accepted help, her overall stress levels had minimised immensely. Second to that, another important factor is being able to allow yourself to see the light at the end of the tunnel, when being exposed to very difficult scenarios, much like what Belinda had been through. The key is to consistently work on yourself. This is when the overall message of the show comes into the limelight. As Belinda states, you must find that inner happiness, before you can even think about trying to find another person, a possible 'new' partner, to become apart of your and your families life.

In this episode of CTM, Ash Keillah, professional surfer, passionate Brazilian jiu-jitsu follower and former contestant on the My Kitchen Rules TV series, joins me in conversation via Zoomchat. Ash details a very unfortunate situation that had occurred within his family. A few years back, Ash lost his mother to suicide, which as you could've imagined, had a huge impact in him, and his journey, on what we call 'life'. This led to excessive partying, drinking, hanging out with the wrong crowd. Until once day, Ash went to a party, he tried to break up an altercation between two people, and resultantly he was glassed in his left eye. Leaving him, now, permanently blind in his left eye. Ash states, that he took this instance as a huge wake up call. So much so, that he's actually (and I'll explain) gratefull for the outcome, and for that situation to have occurred. The situation helped Ash reassess himself as an individual, finding his purpose within life, and his passions and goals for the present and for the future. On another note, Ash talks about how himself and his wife Stacey, had been contacted and accepted on MKR to be apart of the 2019 Aus series. Extremely interesting listen, when you get the perspective of how much of reality TV is actually pushed into one direction, to make reality TV, 'reality TV'. The overall message of the episode, is that everyone can change, within themselves. We may be being led astray, due to unhealthy friendships, uncertainty within yourself in terms of what you want from life. Learn to reassess, find what gets your brain ticking, and what gets you up in the morning with a smile on the face, and don't ever stop a certain passion because Ol' mate told you that you'll never be successful at it. Nothings unachievable if you put your all into it. Nothing.

Wayde details the journey that led to both himself and his life-long bestmate, Daniel Schuller, to wanna then resutlantly have this passion for starting up the podcast series. Expressing that the two of them have now taken any future friday working shifts of, using the day to reflect, build, and to continue to make a positive impact through the power of there podcast series. On a personal level, in line with the name of the topic, a few years back Wayde unfortunately lost his father to cancer. This brought upon a sense of alone-ness onto Wayde. That bigger question of why me? Why my family? Why my father? And that instant thought process of feeling like no one would understand what your feeling, or would even be going through the same / a similar situation. Wayde's key to healing through this unfortunate scenario, or any other discomforting / saddened situation, is to speak up. We're all surrounded by friends, family members, loved ones. Reach out, to remove whatever that may be weighing you down. And don't ever feel in anyway that your showing signs of weakness by allowing yourself to be this vulnerable. This in itself, is the overall message of the episode.

In this episode of CTM, I, Jayden Woolaston, embark on a solo episode, revolving around the topic of 'Overthinking'. If I'm completely honest, it's something that I struggle with on a day-to-day basis. And I feel like it's a very unspoken societal issue, that many many people struggle with. As I continue to go into more and more detail with this topic, I do also bring up the certain coping mechanisms that can help to eleveiate my once over exemplified level of overthinking. Whilst I also delve into the bigger question of why, why it is that we overthink? Why do we go back and change an answer to a question in an exam, when we were almost certain that the original answer was 99.9% right. Why do we overthink the most miniscual of tasks, that may be handed to you by your boss? Why? The overall message being portrayed throughout this episode, is that if you can continue on that upward path of bettering yourself. Ultimately, this action will help to reduce your own personal level of overthinking. Because, with bettering yourself, comes with a resurgence of confidence. With confidence being a major impactor on reducing , and or even removing any signs of overthinking.

In this episode, episode 12, season 2 of CTM, my father had kindly given up his time to fill in as a guest host, interviewing me. It was certainly very different, being on the receiving end of questions, when being so used to doing polar opposite. Although, it was a very therapeutic experience. As the interview progresses, I then delve into more and more detail, with regards to where I'm at in life, mentally, and holistically. How, the once negative experiences that I had been faced with, have ultimately shaped me into the person that I am today. I haven't had the opportunity to speak about these instances, since my introduction video in season 1, episode 1B. So it was very refreshing to be able to be given another opportunity to share my story. Toward the end of the episode, I also pay mention to my struggle with my own personal body image. With the overall message being, that 'just because someone seemingly looks to be in great physical shape, it doesn't mean that there 100% comfortable with there own skin'. We all have imperfections, and it's about acknowledging that, as these imperfections define us as the personal that we are known to be. See it as a positive, rather then a negative.

In this episode, Season 2, Episode 11, Dok Mamer, TikToker, joins me in conversation via ZoomChat. Dok talks about the origins of his TikTok account. Stating that the reasoning behind it, was to 'spread the love and not the hate'. Dok also brings up situations from the past, where he had been in firing-line of racism. However, for Dok, the racist remarking, never got to him. He portrays an attitude, where if you give the antagonist the response that he's resultantly wanting, to which would be a hostile / aggressive reaction, then your only then adding more fuel to the fire. Sometimes you've gotta take a deep breath, and react in a calm matter , and walk away from the situation at hand. The overall message of this episode, is that the more positivity that we can create in our own lives, the more inclined that we are to share this positivity with others. It's infectious.

In this episode of CTM, Todd Morgan, National Programs Manager, for Outside the Locker Room, joins me in conversation via Zoomchat. Todd goes into detail with regards to the origins of Outside the Locker Room and how it was first formed. For those tuning in, that don't know a thing about OTLR, the idea / mission behind this non-for-profit charity is to "Deliver welfare and education programs that build both collective and individual mental health and wellbeing within our communities." - Outside The Locker Room. Todd outlines the educational programs that OTLR have put in place, to which they mainly revolve around the idea of everyone getting given a fair go, within sport. Whether you you have a form of disability, or are from a certain ethic group, everyone should be given a fair-go, an equal opportunity to play sports and to feel apart of that community. In this episode, we also cover the certain 'stereotypes' that some sporting clubs may potentially be well known for. Excessive drinking culture, drug indulging, racist remarking toward opposition. Whilst also openly sharing possible resolutions toward these issues, and how OTLR are trying to change these club cultures. One more pointer that I wanna pay mention too, is OTLR'S passion to helping people that may have set themselves a goal, to becoming a professional sporting athlete. It may have always been a dream of there's. However, they don't end up performing at the standard required, which resultantly see's them being delisted. OTLR provides assistance for individuals going through such a depressing, such a heart-breaking situation. The overall message of this Episode, is to not be afraid to reach out to those, that may or may not be in need of a conversation. Through the power of one random conversation, you might just infact help someone break an unhealthy habit of there's, or make them feel like as if someone finally wants to hear how there day was.

Such a different interviewing style to what I've usually accustomed too. Very layed back, very funny, very insightful. In this episode, of CTM, Trademutt co-founders, Dan Allen and Ed Ross join me on the couch. The boys go into detail with regards to how they started up Trademutt, with the aim to ultimately help those that are struggling mentally. How in 2014 , Dan Allen lost his close mate, Dan, to suicide. Which ultimately led to Dan and Ed starting up Trademutt. The importance of starting a conversation with someone that looks to me struggling, had also been covered. The boys do also pay mention to Tiacs, which is a non-for-profit organisation that is joint with Trademutt. Which essentially allows people to reach out to a fully qualified Psychologist. Whether it be over the phone, via text, or in person. Whilst it being completely free of charge, zero appointment waiting times, and you can have as many appointments with the psych as you feel like you need. The overall message that Dan and Allen want the listeners, you guys, to get out of this episode, is to give up a few minutes out of your day , to check up on someone. You never know, as through this action you could allow someone to have a 'click' moment, a point of realisation, to start the healing process, or it could honestly just make there day.

In this episode of CTM, season 2, episode 8, Ciera Joins me on the couch. F.Y.I the reasoning behind why Ciera's last name hasn't been mentioned, is due to privacy reasons. Throughout the interview, Ciera makes mention of why people potentially perceive health professionals as 'money driven', not worried about gaining a deeper connection with their clients. Whislt also touching base on another perception that people have, regarding the idea that all health professionals live the perfect life. The main message that Ciera wants listeners to take out of this episode, is to not give up on potentially seeking professional help, if you've have a bad experience. As Ciera states, Seeing a health professional, is very much like speed dating. Eventually you'll find your perfect match. Which will aid in breaking your walls down, allowing you to speak openly about whatever that you may be struggling with.
