When Robert Godden joined us in 2018 for Episode 235, we read tea leaves to predict Steven Marshall’s election victory. Today, Robert returns with his tea expertise as we sit down with two Senate hopefuls – Dianah Walter and Dr. Rod Pearce AM – who are campaigning together under the “SA Matters” banner. While sipping tea, we explore how these candidates plan to navigate Canberra’s corridors while maintaining their commitment to South Australian priorities. In a refreshing departure from party politics, Dianah and Rod share their journey from collaboration on women’s health initiatives to forming an unendorsed Senate ticket focused squarely on local issues. With Dianah’s background in regional advocacy and Rod’s decades of experience as a respected GP shaping national health policy, they present a compelling case for representation that transcends party loyalty. There is no SA Drink Of The Week, this week. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we close the show with Swap Meet’s dreamy indie folk-rock track “Ceiling Fan” – an apt choice given the band’s own journey of rebranding from Sour Sob and striking out with a new identity, just as Dianah is doing with her political realignment. Running Sheet: SA Matters This Election 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week No South Australian Drink Of The Week, this week. 00:02:30 SA Matters: Behind the Independent Campaign In a political landscape where party loyalty often overshadows regional advocacy, Dianah Walter and Dr. Rod Pearce have emerged as “SA Matters” – an unendorsed Senate ticket with a decidedly local focus. Dianah, fresh from her departure from the Legalised Cannabis Party, and Rod, a respected GP whose voice has shaped national health policy, have joined forces at a time when social media giants face increasing scrutiny for their influence on political discourse. “South Australia does matter” isn’t just their campaign slogan – it’s the philosophy that brought them together through a shared history of advocacy that includes women’s health initiatives. Their promise is straightforward: representation that puts our state first, regardless of partisan pressure. “Our loyalty is to the work we’ve done together in the past and to basically being an advocate for South Australia,” Rod explains, citing specific examples of how party senators might face conflicts between state interests and party priorities. This unwavering focus on South Australian priorities forms the cornerstone of their campaign. Dianah’s recent encounter with caregivers of a disabled woman reveals their grassroots approach: “What can we do to help you?” she asked after a lengthy discussion. Their response was telling: “In all of the last two years they’ve been coming to that place, not once had anyone stopped to talk to them.” This approach reflects the StoryBrand framework where the voter is the hero and candidates are guides – something Dianah intuitively grasped at their campaign launch: “You are not here because of me… I believe you’re actually here because you’re here for you.” For Rod, this connection to community has been central to his 40-year career as a GP: “You need to have that 15-minute, one-on-one conversation, which I have with 20 or 30 people every day… but that’s gotta translate into effective advocacy.” Robert highlights how traditional media creates lasting trust: “I’ve been an avid listener to ABC radio since I was 18… I’ve just heard your voice so many times,” he tells Rod. “We don’t necessarily believe what we read on Facebook, but we certainly believe what we hear on the radio.” Dianah shares radio’s crucial role during emergencies: “We recently lost power for nearly 24 hours on the YP. I’m a Country Fire Service volunteer… our mobile phone towers went down and we had no connection as emergency services volunteers. But I got me little transistor out that dad gave me, and I tuned into ABC and I knew what was going on.” The darker side of modern media becomes apparent when Dianah describes setting up her campaign Facebook page: “Three seconds in my feed, I had Trump, Elon Musk, lots of right wing extremists in my feed!'” Robert, a self-described “below the line voter, like 10% of the population,” offers perspective: “Australian democracy is based on the person who the least people have a problem with gets in… it’s not about who’s the best, it’s about who’s the least worst.” This conversation reveals the complexity facing independent candidates – they must define themselves by values rather than party policies, building trust through personal connection rather than political shorthand. 01:03:30 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Murray Bridge’s own Swapmeet with Ceiling Fan. Swapmeet began life as Sour Sob before a legal threat forced them to change their name. This journey of rebranding while maintaining artistic integrity mirrors our Senate hopefuls’ commitment to authentic representation. The name “Swapmeet” carries special significance for lead singer Venus O’Broin, who got her current guitar at a swap meet – a grassroots connection that echoes our candidates’ approach to building their campaign from the ground up. Swapmeet’s debut EP “Oxalis” (cheekily named after the genus of the sour sob plant) features today’s track “Ceiling Fan,” which captures the dreamy indie folk rock sound that earned them Best Song at last year’s SA Music Awards. Like our guests today, Swapmeet proved that sometimes starting fresh can be liberating while staying true to your roots.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cordiant Digital Infrastructure joint managing directors Steven Marshall and Benn Mikula, alongside chief financial officer Mark Tiner, joined Stephen Gunnion in the Proactive studio to discuss the company's strong results for the first half of the financial year. Marshall highlighted a 5.4% growth in NAV, reaching 124.4 pence, and announced an interim dividend of 2.1 pence, covered 4.7 times by EBITDA. He attributed this growth to strong performances from their three primary operating companies—České Radiokomunikace, Emitel, and Speed Fibre Group. Tiner delved deeper into the numbers, noting an EBITDA growth of 15.2% across the portfolio, with Emitel achieving 15.7%, CRA recording 16.5% growth driven by its cloud business, and Speed Fibre Group delivering 7.2%. Mikula identified three pillars underpinning the company's success: its skilled team, strategic clarity, and operational experience. He emphasised the team's ability to consistently execute a buy, build, and grow model. Marshall explained the company's cautious capital allocation policy, balancing dividends with share buybacks and reinvestments in growth. He assured investors that CORD's assets are well-positioned to deliver sustainable growth, fueled by long-term contracts and rising market demands. Cordiant Digital Infrastructure Joint Managing Directors Steven Marshall, Benn Mikula and Chief Financial Officer Mark Tiner joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss the company's impressive financial results and strategic initiatives. Steven Marshall announced a total return for the year of 9.3%, increasing NAV per share to 120.1p. The total dividend for the year increased 5.0% to 4.2p, ahead of guidance; 4.4x covered by earnings and 1.6x covered by adjusted funds from operations. Tiner noted that the 9.3% return could have reached 11% if not for adverse foreign exchange impacts. The portfolio's aggregate EBITDA grew by 7.2% on a like-for-like basis. Benn Mikula elaborated on the company's strategy of providing investors with exposure to diversified digital infrastructure, including fibre optic cables, data centers, and communication towers. Cordiant's assets span across North America and Europe, providing essential infrastructure for the digital economy. The company's conservative valuation approach offers both diversification and growth. Marshall praised the exceptional management teams overseeing assets in the Czech Republic, Poland, and Ireland. These teams have driven revenue growth and strategic acquisitions, such as expanding cloud services in the Czech Republic and acquiring communication towers in Poland. Sam and Chern break down the results and discuss the potential reasons why Peter Malinauskas and his Labor Party was able to pull off such a strong victory. What were the statewide ingredients for this Labor majority? Did we learn anything about the Government in the announcement of the new Cabinet? Why did Steven Marshall fail to win a second term? Is the growing strength of Independents something we will see beyond the borders of South Australia in the upcoming federal election? And how will Scott Morrison react to these results with a federal election just 2 months away? Scott Morrison and senior government MPs have sought to downplay the federal implications of Labor's decisive victory at the South Australian state election, saying there's a “big difference” between the premiers and Anthony Albanese.Liberal Party Premier Steven Marshall conceded defeat on Saturday night, with big swings towards Labor making Peter Malinauskas the first leader to defeat an incumbent government since the pandemic began. The ABC is projecting Labor will win 26 seats and the Liberals 15, with five independents.Labor enjoyed swings of more than 5 per cent on a two-party preferred basis across South Australia, posing questions for the Morrison government ahead of the imminent federal election. The Prime Minister on Sunday insisted the South Australian election was fought on “state issues” and said the federal election would be different.Mr Morrison appeared to be well aware that he will have to get voters to re-elect him as the nation's Liberal leader in an environment where Labor premiers have proved incredibly popular in their states.“What I know is that Anthony Albanese is not Peter Malinauskas, he is not any of the other premiers, he is not Annastacia Palaszczuk. He is none of these other premiers,” Mr Morrison said, taking a dig at the Opposition Leader.“One thing they have noticed is there is a big difference between Anthony Albanese as the federal Labor leader and what we see in the performance of some of his state colleagues.“Mark McGowan is a good example of that. Anthony Albanese is no Mark McGowan. That is for sure.”Mr Morrison and Mr McGowan last week appeared side-by-side at a joint press conference in Western Australia, where the Liberal Party was almost completely wiped out at the most recent state election.Finance Minister Simon Birmingham on Sunday tried to minimise any ramifications from the South Australian Liberals' stunning loss. The most senior South Australian politician in the Morrison government claimed some South Australian voters were “potentially tricked” by Labor's state election campaign after the party secured a decisive victory.Appearing on ABC's Insiders, Senator Birmingham appeared reluctant to concede there were any lessons to be learned at a federal level. He said he would work as closely as he could with Mr Malinauskas, but claimed Labor had run a singularly focused “scare campaign” on hospitals and ambulance ramping.“I do think that Labor's campaign was effective, but I also think, as the Electoral Commission found, that it was based on misleading statements and that of course is something that does mean that some voters potentially were tricked,” he told the ABC.“But equally I think Covid-19 did play a very difficult role for Steven Marshall.”A Labor election advertisement about ambulance ramping in South Australia was last week found to have breached the state's Electoral Act because it was “inaccurate and misleading”.Labor was ordered to take down the commercial, which featured an ambulance officer claiming ramping was “worse than ever”, because it contradicted SA Health data that showed ramping times had markedly declined.Last week the state's ambulance union said five people had died while waiting for paramedics to respond to calls for help in the fortnight before the election. And the issues of ambulance ramping and hospital wait times seemed to resonate with voters.Senator Birmingham claimed there was a possibility Labor would collude with unions on campaign “strategy tactics” ahead of the federal election. However, he said no government was perfect and that the federal election was “always going to be a challenging one” for the Coalition.Later that morning, Mr Malinauskas told reporters he was committed to solving the ambulance ramping “crisis” but said his government would have a broad policy agenda that was not singularly focused on...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Although an uproar is “seen,” it is preceded with a subversive force. The church operates in a similar way, being subversive to the rhythm of the culture it exists within. It is the perpetuation of this subversive force that causes and creates an uproar that is seen and felt. Sam and Chern discuss the state of the campaign and which electorates could decide this race and should be closely watched as election day approaches. Why is Steven Marshall struggling to replicate the Covid electoral bounce that benefitted other state leaders in polls and elections throughout 2021? Why have South Australian Liberals struggled in the past? Unusually for Australian politics, is Peter Malinauskas well-positioned to limit Marshall to one term? And what will the impact of the six Independents who are looking to defend their seats in a few weeks time? All these questions and more answered in this week's podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ballot-to-talk-about/message
