Send us a textEver tried capturing the best intro but ended up with hilarious chaos instead? That's exactly where our Funky Panther crew—Chad, Javier, and Tim—found themselves as they stumbled through a wildly entertaining session filled with laughs and candid moments. Starting off with a nostalgic trip back to when radio ruled our lives, we reminisced about the good old days with Disney Radio and Radio Oz. From spontaneous stories about hurricanes and swimming pools to winning games despite questionable decisions, we served up a hearty dose of unfiltered camaraderie and humor. As we journeyed through the past, we couldn't resist revisiting our musical upbringing in Fort Worth, recalling quirky antics like recording songs on cassette tapes and sneaking glimpses of late-night TV. Our tales of State Fair magic painted a vibrant picture of fair food temptations and the thrill of nearly splurging on Cutco knives. We even indulged in some car talk, sharing dreams of new wheels amidst today's economic challenges. It was a light-hearted chat that evoked laughter, fond memories, and a sense of just how much we've evolved over the years. Our culinary adventures took a delicious turn as we explored Italy's rich food scene, from savoring Michelin star dining with Massimo Bottura to reminiscing about Florence's wine windows. We shared personal travel tales filled with humor and sincerity, leading up to the excitement of our ACL weekend plans. With a potential live broadcast and a casual meetup on the horizon, we wrapped up the session with gratitude for our listeners and a promise of more lively updates and adventures. One of the perks of being a parent is the ability to exert your influences on them. You literally have the power to determine what language they use, their view of the world, whether to call them Kleenex or tissues, and most importantly--what kind of music they listen to.Do you just blast them with Kids Bop, Disney Radio and Little Einsteins? Or do you survey the history of music, culling the best sounds from the past seven decades, in the hopes that they will develop a love and appreciation for the classic?I think you already know the path that the dads at The New Dad Rock chose; Ween!In this week's episode, Steve unearths a mix he made his 5-year old daughter over a decade ago. This week we discussed the Disney Channel Concert Series that aired from 1997-2001; it helped boost the careers of many pop stars (ahem, *NSYNC) and eventually evolved into the Disney Radio cash cow that brought us things like High School Musical The Concert; Jonas Brothers live in 3D etc, etc. Fair warning this isn't as *DISNEY* heavy an episode as normal; but it's relevant! We also discussed the new proposal to reopen Walt Disney World and how we feel about all of that. Jace & Holly Barracough are locals reporters in my town who recently did a story on me and also featured me on their Disney podcast, Navigating the Magic. If you know anything about me and my book, you know that I’m a particular fan of Frozen and Frozen II, but I also really appreciate the company of Disney, how they approach customer experience, and how they provide such an inspiration for innovation. Holly was a cast member for Disney for a few years and she also worked at Disney Radio. So, there are several things she brings to the table when it comes to understanding how Disney was able to teach her how to be her best for the customers (aka, their “guests”). Holly also shares her take on how she went from not caring that much about Disney to loving her time working for them. We also talk about innovation and get Holly and Jace’s take on what it means to be a voice of influence.

Caught off guard we start with a swears-full recollection of an at work run-in with Disney Radio fave "JagMac", an all-family pop group I had seen the week before at a radio event in LA. If you can make it (or skip) through that, we dig into news about an unwanted cello, flying in fancy seats for cheap to the UK aboard an A380 and assume you have drink coupons. We also nonsensically preview Anthony's upcoming trip to Turks AND Caicos.
Terry LaPorta says her daughter's singing started out as a hobby, but that by age 11 she was performing in Nashville honky-tonks. Her now 16-year old daughter Samantha has since become a Disney Radio artist, and is showing little sign of slowing down. In fact, with the new release of It's a Girl Thing, Samantha LaPorta (featured in episode 24) appears poised for a rapid rise in popularity. In this interview, Terry shares stories of her daughter's journey and what it's like to be her parent and career manager. She also shares useful tips for other parents whose children have Samantha's level of talent and potential. Terry was in the entertainment business as child, which gives her an advantageous perspective. She also brings a working mom's perspective to the table as a career professional in the healing arts. In spite of these perspectives, Terry has had to learn a great deal about many things, including the music business, social media, artist development, and the art of protecting and preserving her pop star daughter's youth. She and her husband were savvy enough to create a college fund for Samantha, and were also forward thinking enough to lay groundwork for Samantha's social media presence, before her career began to show signs of traction. Perhaps the one most insightful thing Terry has done for her daughter, has been to ensure that she has always had an out. As much as she's excited for her daughter's career, Terry has never wanted Samantha to feel the pressure that comes with lack of choice where her life and music career are concerned. Terry attributes much of the success she's shared with her daughter Samantha to video courses offered by music business educator Rick Barker. She spoke very highly of the content that Rick offered, much of which was free on YouTube. We also talk about the challenges and frustrations that she and Samantha have faced. Most people in touch with the music business have come to understand that artist development by record labels is a thing of the past. Terry in fact says it's all up to the artist, or in her daughter Samantha's case, it's all up to the family. She also speaks candidly about the fact that the music business is numbers driven. I suppose this could be said about most if not all businesses. Even so, she feels that there are many positives in the music business, including people who are willing to share what they've learned. When I asked what recommendations she had for other parents in her boat, she started off by admitting had she known how much money she'd spend on Samantha's endeavors, she probably would have run in the opposite direction. She laughs and admits, however, that it's been a very gradual investment. Two recommendations she shared were on recording albums and social media. Terry has learned that recording an entire album is probably not a good idea for young artists, as they're likely to have a completely different sound from the time an album project is started to the time it's completed and marketed. Self-motivated behavior is something Terry believes parents should look for as a sign that a professional music career is right for their child. Her advice on social media–start by choosing three channels, get familiar with them, and identify the one you like best. Once you find your favorite social channel, share real moments, like rehearsal performances. Finally, she says it's about baby steps, or as I like to say, it's a long game. At age 16, Samantha LaPorta is the youngest guest I've had on the podcast. Our conversation took place on the same day that her single “It's a Girl Thing” was released. She's a Disney Radio artist, something she always wanted to be, and she's has acquired a number of awards and accolades, including social site Sweety High's Best Holiday Songs of 2016, NCMA's 2015 New Teen Artist and Best Teen Video, and the 2015 Nashville Universe Awards nominations for Rising Star, Best Song, and Best Female Artist. Clearly Samantha has caught the attention of people who matter, which is a testament to her drive and self motivation. All of this in spite of the fact that she's at a very early point in the trajectory of her fast moving career. Samantha has been described musically as a mix of Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. She sees herself as a pop singer with R&B in her soul. Even though she regularly performs for large crowds, Samantha admits that she was pretty shy in the beginning. She shared with me that she used to be so shy, that she couldn't look at people or have either of her parents in the same room while singing. Clearly she's broken out of her shell, but says she's still working to become the performer she really wants to be. Nowadays Samantha performs, records and works on her skills as a songwriter through practice, coaching and collaborating. She loves playing guitar too. She loves the language and what it gives her as a songwriter. Samantha's mother Terry is very active in the management of Samantha's career. I got the strong impression that there's good balance between Samantha's music, school and social life, thanks to her parents. Terry told me she wants Samantha to reflect on this time in her life, with memories of an actual childhood. Part of this balance includes Samantha's active involvement in giving back, which she does by performing for children with medical needs, the elderly, and anti-bullying events. She's mega talented, and I know it's a tough business; but I think she'll go far. She's got a good head on her shoulders and great parents guiding her along the way. Lookout indie pop. Relationships, People Skills, Success, Encouragement, Trust Summary People skills are so often the differentiator between the talented person who is reasonably successful, and the incredibly successful person who creates buy-in and commitment from everyone around them. Fortunately, these people skills can be learned, although they must ultimately come from the heart. We'll discuss that in our Thought of the Day. Then in our interview segment, we'll be joined by star entrepreneur and bestselling author Dave Kerpen, whose newest book just happens to be titled The Art of People. That and more on today's show. Bob's Thought of the Day Success in both business and life is based on roughly 15% technical skill and 85% people skills. (Dale Carnegie mentioned this in his classic How to Win Friends and Influence People.) Technical skills and talent are vital, but will only get you so far. Often, those with great talent and poor people skills are working for those with adequate talent and great people skills. Whether this is “fair” or not, it's a principle that has stood the test of time. And like any natural law, you can embrace it or you can deny it. What you cannot do is alter it. The person who goes the furthest is the one who can not only get along with others, but also become someone whom others like and trust. And who can consistently create buy-in for their ideas. As a young man, Benjamin Franklin understood that the best way to achieve success was not by being sharp and sarcastic, and making others wrong. He grasped that he would be much more effective as a result of improving his people skills. This self improvement process was detailed both in Franklin's autobiography, and Walter Isaacson's biography, Benjamin Franklin. You can have every positive success attribute working for you, but if you can't work and play well with others, and relate to them in a way that can positively influence their thoughts and actions, you will severely limit your success. On the other hand, if you can conduct yourself in a way that makes others feel good about themselves, and about you, then you're in a position to make a positive difference in their lives. It's true that there are those who have achieved great financial success despite a lack of people skills. Yet many of these people have personal relationships that are a mess. The single greatest people skill is a highly developed and authentic interest in the other person. Interview with Dave Kerpen Trust is everything in business. You can't do business with people you can't trust. There is a time and a place for negotiation, but when it errs on the side of dishonesty, it's very difficult to restore that trust. It's important to pay attention to the people around you. If they are “bluffing,” they will show it through their gestures, speeding up their speech, and other clues. Dave goes into much more detail about this in his book The Art of People. Be distinctive, unique, and creative! Dave shares a compelling story about how he landed the Burger King account when he worked for Disney Radio as a young man. We all know the value of persistence, but it's hard to put it into practice. Dave shares key insights about mirror neurons. At the cellular level, we respond to the mood of the person speaking to us. If that person is in a good mood, we pick up that energy. The opposite is true as well. People's moods are literally contagious. We have to get in a good mood to be effective, persuasive, and inspiring. To get yourself in a good mood, practice gratitude and acts of kindness. Those are the most powerful drugs on the planet. Dave shares an example of holding open the door for a few people, a simple gesture than can impact both yourself and others. What works best, criticism or encouragement? Encouragement and praise work, but criticism doesn't. When you see behavior in others that needs to be corrected, coach them privately rather than criticize them publicly. Criticism can have a negative long-term impact.
