Born and raised in a small town in Mansfield, Connecticut, Alexa Curtis knew she didn't fit into the “normal social mold”. When she was 7 years old, her father was wrongfully convicted of a heinous crime and put in a maximum security prison.  By the age of 12, her father was released from jail but during that challenging period of life, Alexa started writing and expressing herself through fashion to help her cope, starting a fashion blog; A Life in the Fashion Lane which became a platform for her to express her feelings about everything relating to teens, body image, and mental health.  As Alexa evolved, her blog naturally shifted from fashion to discussing sensitive topics that teens and young adults face every day. A Life in the Fashion Lane was changed to Life Unfiltered with Alexa Curtis.  It became a lifestyle website and podcast for teens & parents discussing topics such as social media and mental health.  Not only did Alexa turn her little fashion blog into a full-time lifestyle platform for teens, but through cold-pitching, she got sponsored by brands like British Airways, T-Mobile, Lands' End, and more.  Today, on top of helping her consulting clients pitch themselves with her tried and true framework, Alexa is the CEO and founder of Be Fearless and the Be Fearless Summit, a pop-up summit that appeared at Drexel University right before we were in a pandemic lockdown in 2020 and has since premiered at UCONN, Vanderbilt, Central Connecticut State University, and UC Berkeley.  Alexa has spoken at numerous colleges; (Northeastern, UConn, Eastern Connecticut, Rutgers) along with high schools – discussing how to be fearless as well as on mental health and social media.  Alexa has had the honor of speaking alongside Amal Clooney and Serena Williams at Penn Women and in Sept 2018, she added ‘host' to her arsenal as she launched her own radio show on Radio Disney called “Fearless Every Day” with Alexa Curtis which was the first of its kind and broke new ground for the Radio Disney where Alexa interviewed various guests who shared their journey of overcoming obstacles/challenges and chasing after their dreams.  Recently, Be Fearless Summit was acquired by upskilling and mentorship platform GrasshoppHer. Alexa works with the co-founder Heather Miller on their membership model and reinvented career fairs. Follow and Connect with Alexa: Alexa Curtis Instagram Alexa Curtis Consulting Be Fearless INC. “I wish a lot of young people knew that it's OK to be different,” says Alexa Curtis, 25-year-old Gen Z entrepreneur and co-founder of GrasshoppHer. In 2011, at just 12 years old, Alexa started a blog called "Life in the Fashion Lane" as a way to escape the relentless bullying she endured at school. She used this platform to discuss everything from body image, mental health, to teen life. Eventually, she became a Radio Disney Host, before leaving to launch the Be Fearless Summit. Hear what this summit was all about and how it was acquired by GrasshoppHer, an upskilling community for women ages 24 to 37. Co-founded with McKinsey consultant Heather Miller, GrasshoppHer helps other women become fearless founders just like Alexa. Highlights from today's conversation include: It's important to talk to people. Ask them how they do what they do so you can learn to do it in a way that works for you. Figure out the natural extensions of your brand so that you can make more money without putting all your eggs in one basket. Look around you, at what is missing from your life, and build a business around it. Take a risk and go for it. No regrets. Quotes • “At the end of the day, trade shows and getting in front of people, and that face to face connection is really how you build that brand.” (16:17-16:26 | Alexa) • “The the opposite side of not taking the risk is the possibility that it works out. So if you take the risk, and even if it doesn't work out, if you've taken a risk, that's that dramatic, likely something is going to happen to you in your life, that's gonna make you realize it was worth the risk. So I would say, you have to go for it. Because otherwise I wouldn't want to live with that kind of regret.” (22:12-22:33 | Alexa) • “Limit your scrolling. The more that you're comparing yourself to other companies, the more that you're wasting your time not being focused on scaling yours.” (44:53-45:01 | Alexa) • “I don't need to work 24 hour days, that's a me thing. I used to work and wouldn't stop until eight, nine, and I was so tired, and I was still so unhappy. And that was something I really struggled with at Disney. Trying something fun and unique, that's personal or even business related, just makes you a well rounded person. Can you profit from blogging you ask?  Yes, you can! In order for your blogging efforts to be sustainable long-term, you'll want to write about something you're genuinely passionate about.    Alexa Curtis is a real-life example of that, at just 12 years old she started a fashion blog; A Life in the Fashion Lane. It became a platform for her to express her feelings around everything relating to teens, body image, and mental health. I love her story as she is a classic example of there isn't one way or path to become successful.    As Alexa evolved as a person, her blog naturally did as well. It shifted from fashion to discussing sensitive topics that teens and young adults face every day.  A Life in the Fashion Lane was changed to Life Unfiltered with Alexa Curtis and became a lifestyle website and podcast for teens & parents discussing topics such as social media and mental health. Not only did Curtis turn her little fashion blog into a full-time lifestyle platform for teens, through cold-pitching, she managed to get sponsored by brands like British Airways, T-Mobile, Lands' End, and more.   Alexa gets transparent about one of her money stories. For starters, she currently owns a mentorship business to help young people with life and where they want to go and what they want to do. She began this to assist the leaders of tomorrow, because growing up, Curtis felt like she didn't have the opportunity to a professional influence. Besides that, Curtis has a blog and a podcast called Life Unfiltered with Alexa. On this podcast, and in this blog nothing is off limits and listeners and readers should be prepared for anything. A deep and beautiful Thirsty Thursday it is! After a hectic two weeks, your favorite Jappy hostess with the mostest has come to realize what she has been lacking - structure. The need for speed and routine is well underway. Overdrive no more, structure here she comes. Bachelor nation was truly blessed this week with not one, but two episodes of Bachelor in Paradise. Jaw-ers, Lindsay has not been this excited for a season from the franchise in a long time. Briefing quickly on what we've seen thus far on the beach, but more importantly how the season was well worth the wait. Hopefully this doesn't jinx it. On today's special episode, Lindsay was joined by entrepreneur and influencer, Alexa Curtis. Since the age of 12, Alexa has been a hustler. Starting up a fashion blog at such a young age, spiraled into creating an even bigger platform for her to inspire and motivate others. A former Radio Disney host, television star, business woman - she has seen and done it all. A real life Mary Poppins one may say. The two discuss the growth and hard work that went into creating her platform and who she is today. As well as the importance of mental health and the struggles that many face on a day to day basis. Emphasizing the importance of you are never alone. (TW 10:03-150 - eating disorders and mental health) Alexa is also the founder of the 'Be Fearless Summit' which helps men and women in college get out of their comfort zones, and find their way to their dream careers. The journey since I began my website has been a long, long journey. Yes, I'm only 20, yes I began my blog when I was 12, and no I didn't ever intend for my platform to turn into what it has: but I knew I was onto something the minute I began throwing around the word fearless. I always knew deep down that I had the power to inspire teens to get out of their comfort zone, do what they love, and live fearlessly.  On October 27, 2017, I wrote an email to a Disney executive. I'm thrilled to announce that Fearless Everyday with Alexa Curtis premiers on Radio Disney on September 7th, 2018.  Thank you for following my journey. Thank you for your support, your openness, and your efforts to let my journey inspire yours.

Couple weeks back I went into Hollywood to meet up with Alexa Curtis to be on her podcast This Is Life Unfiltered to talk about my story, where I grew up, college years, launching Purpose in the Youth and my advice for people who’re struggling to get started. We had connected back in July of 2017 when the both of us were living in Boston and I had her on the show to talk about her story for Episode 43. Fun fact - she was THE first podcast I had ever visually recorded. Lighting was terrible, you could see my dresser in the frame but we for sure made it work. Just a reminder that we all gotta somewhere! This is the Behind the scenes of meeting up with her, shooting the podcast and a little “Bearded” action in the streets of Hollywood. I had a great time and think the podcast couldn’t have gone any better so make sure to check it out if you want to hear more about B-O-B! - Don’t forget to leave a 1 sentence review on the iTunes Podcast App with your feedback. I appreciate it and so too does my beard… See ya! - Follow Alexa Instagram: @Alexa_Curtis Twitter: @Alexa_Curtis Website: LifeUnfilteredWithAlexa.com   Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: @Bobbbaaaay Twitter: @Bobbbaaaay Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) Follow us on Spotify Follow us on Soundcloud Subscribe to iTunes Follow us on Instagram: @PurposeintheYouth

Episode 43: When Alexa first started her blog, ‘A Life In The Fashion Lane’, it became a form of therapy where she could express her thoughts and feelings and she never hesitated to hit “publish” on any post. At just seven years old her father was wrongfully convicted for a terrible crime and served five years behind bars at a maximum security prison where she would visit him everyday. Growing up in a small town in Eastern Connecticut, the story got around fast and due to what was going on in her personal life as well as becoming a blogger, she was beginning to to get bullied by the kids around her. Uncomfortable with her surroundings, at sixteen Alexa dropped out of school knowing that she had 0 intentions of going to college and was able to finish taking courses online. She would travel twice a year to New York City for Fashion Week and continued to push out as many blog posts as she could create. Her post “Role Model or Runway Model?” got sent around to major publications as it talked about the honest truth of the fashion industry and what she had experienced first hand trying to become a model and the eating disorders that were tagged along with it. At just nineteen years old she’s had segments on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Good Day LA, NBC Nightly News, Rachel Ray, featured on Rolling Stone with her thoughts on the Netflix Series “13 Reasons Why” and many other media outlets In this podcast Alexa discusses how there is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes of becoming successful than people realize, having the power to do whatever you want when being in a creative field and a young entrepreneur, being turned down from a Warner Brothers producer and reworking her brain to want something more, confidence is something that comes with age as you grow into yourself, if she wrote a book today she would title it “Life As We Know It” because of how quickly our lives change, importance of writing down your goals if you haven’t gotten the opportunity you’ve been waiting for and visualizing exactly what you want and stop caring what people think about you, give yourself enough credit. — Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljm
