This is Heyer Today, a podcast exploring the life and work of Regency romance nonpareil, Georgette Heyer. Many of you will be familiar with this week's guest; Mary Jo Putney, who hails from Baltimore, Maryland in the US. Host Sara-Mae has been dying to chat to her as, like Georgette, she's also a best-selling author of Regency romances. Join us, as we pick her brains about the art of building a believable regency world. What are the pitfalls? Unlike Georgette, whom she loves, her work explores alcoholism, death, and domestic abuse as themes. A regular on the best seller lists, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USAToday, and Publishers Weekly, she's well versed in the art of writing to deadline, just like Georgette. She's also been showered in awards like the Romance Writers of America (RITAs), two Romantic Times Career Achievement Awards, four NJRW Golden Leaf awards, plus the NJRW career achievement award for historical romance. In 2013 she was awarded the Romance Writers of America Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award. Phew! Her mantelpiece must be groaning! Also covered in our conversation: Arabella, The Unknown Ajax, Venetia, False Colours and the use of twins in romance. “Romance is a girl thing, which means it never gets as much respect. Mystery is pretty respectable, people get killed, that's respectable. But something that's by and for women largely, is never going to get the same kind of respect.” - Mary Jo

This week Megan, Travis, and Alex make far too many horse noises as we take in this high school body swap movie starring that kid from Air Bud (Kevin Zegers), Samarie Armstrong, and for some reason Sharon Osbourne. We get to hear some personal stories from Alex's childhood which no one asked for and wonder why this Elton John produced film is so homophobic. I'll never get Candle in the Wind out of my head.
"I'm a loser, I'm trouble and I'm stupid. It's basic genetics. Can't help it."We're back with another body swap film, this time the giant ball of cringe better known as IT'S A BOY GIRL THING. Join as Harmony explains why the U.S. Military no longer sends her recruitment calls, BJ uncovers a conspiracy theory surrounding this film, and both debate why a movie that has such potential to be queer positive is instead so aggressively heteronormative. -----Become a Patron! www.patreon.com/thisendsatpromFind the show on Twitter & Instagram: @ThisEndsAtPro-----You can also follow the hosts on their social media channelsBJ Colangelo —Twitter & Instagram: @BJColangeloHarmony Colangelo — Twitter & Instagram: @Veloci_trap_tor-----Logo Design: Haley Doodles @HaleyDoodleDoTheme Song: The Sonder Bombs 'Title': https://thesonderbombs.bandcamp.com/

In the new episode of the Rock's Backpages podcast, we welcome into RBP's cosy virtual cupboard the BBC's former Head of Music Entertainment — and the co-creator of the enduring Later… with Jools Holland show. Yes folks, Mark Cooper revisits his career as a music writer — from seeing the last Sex Pistols show in San Francisco in 1978 to interviewing N.W.A. in South-Cental L.A. 1989 — and talks about his long TV career and the hatching of Later in 1992.Mark's 2008 interview with Neil Young sparks a discussion of the Canadian giant's so-called "doom" years from 1972 to 1976, boxed up this month in the second volume of his monumental Archives project. With special attention to 1975's dark masterwork Tonight's the Night, we hear clips of Neil speaking in 1985 and 2005, then discuss Don't Be Denied, the documentary Mark made about him with director Ben Whalley. There's yet more audio in the episode as we celebrate the 70th birthday of Steve Van Zandt (or, if you prefer, Miami Steve, Little Steven… or indeed Silvio Dante) with clips from a 1982 interview. The E Street Band legend and subsequent Sopranos star talks to John Tobler about the bands he and his buddy Bruce Springsteen led in mid-'60s New Jersey, after which Mark and his co-hosts compare views on SVZ's side band the Disciples of Soul. Finally, Mark (Pringle, that is) talks us through his highlights among the week's 50+ new library articles, including great pieces on the Four Tops, David Bowie, Hound Dog Taylor, Dan ('Instant Replay') Hartman and Sheryl Crow … after which Barney quotes from interviews with Prince and Ani DiFranco, talking about Woody Guthrie and Donald Trump's odious dad Fred. The event industry has been hit harder than most by COVID. I wanted to learn more about how event producers and organizers can overcome the pandemic's obstacles with technology. I also want to explore how virtual platforms be leveraged to ensure that virtual events are on par with physical events. We dare to look towards the future and a post-pandemic world where the industry could host hybrid events. Could future event revenue consist of physical and virtual paying attendees? What are the secrets to good and bad online events? Join Jasper and me as we talk all about all this and much more.

In episode 102, Kestrel welcomes Dominique Drakeford, the founder of Melanin & Sustainable Style, to the show. A platform that is bringing melanin to the forefront of sustainable fashion, beauty and living, MelaninASS is helping to give the ethical industry an authentic and culturally relevant voice. "This whole community is about 'let's talk about what's wrong' - we talk about what's wrong from an environmental point of view, we talk about fast fashion and we point fingers at H&M and we do all this ... but let's look at ourselves and let's talk about some real issues that are wrong because honestly, sustainability is founded on culture - the essence of sustainability is rooted in culture and we don't talk about it." -Dominique Drakeford, Founder of Melanin & Sustainable Style In this episode, Dominique shares a bit of her background and the eclectic experiences that have led her into the sustainable style conversation. Kestrel and Dominique also discuss the layers behind two notable articles written by Dominique: "Who The Hell Wants To See Only White Women In Sustainable Fashion" and "Why I Think Ethical Fashion Is A Privileged White Girl Thing". Dominique highlights several of the disconnects in the sustainable fashion conversation - from representation to discrimination to tokenism to appropriation to privilege - and how historical relevance and institutional racism are being left out of the discourse. They talk about the reality of how the ethical fashion space has been dominated by white women, and how privilege and race relations need to play a larger role in our approach to this conversation. Also, Dominique shares her inspiration behind the Vanguard Series, a project she developed on her platform to highlight "true visionaries and cultural influencers who are creating a positive impact in the fashion, beauty and/or the sustainable lifestyle industry." The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: The GreenShows, a company Dominique worked with in the past Donna Karan Urban Zen, a company Dominique worked with in the past "You're not really going to create change until you make people uncomfortable." "Who The Hell Wants To See Only White Women In Sustainable Fashion" by Dominique "Why I Think Ethical Fashion Is A Privileged White Girl Thing" by Dominique, published on Eluxe Magazine Food apartheid, as explained in this article: "a relentless social construct that devalues human beings and assumes that people are unworthy of having access to nutritious food" Studio 189, one of Dominique's favorite brands, which she also worked with in Ghana Chan + Krys, one of Dominique's favorite brands Susana Colina, one of Dominique's favorite brands Remuse, one of Dominique's favorite brands Voz, one of Dominique's favorite brands Kowtow, one of Dominique's favorite brands Grammar, one of Dominique's favorite brands Vanguards Series on Melanin & Sustainable Style Dominique's 'Conscious Closets' Dominique's YouTube Channel Recommended reading from the intro: "Why Fashion Is Key to Understanding the World of Black Panther" by Tanisha C. Terry LaPorta says her daughter's singing started out as a hobby, but that by age 11 she was performing in Nashville honky-tonks. Her now 16-year old daughter Samantha has since become a Disney Radio artist, and is showing little sign of slowing down. In fact, with the new release of It's a Girl Thing, Samantha LaPorta (featured in episode 24) appears poised for a rapid rise in popularity. In this interview, Terry shares stories of her daughter's journey and what it's like to be her parent and career manager. She also shares useful tips for other parents whose children have Samantha's level of talent and potential. Terry was in the entertainment business as child, which gives her an advantageous perspective. She also brings a working mom's perspective to the table as a career professional in the healing arts. In spite of these perspectives, Terry has had to learn a great deal about many things, including the music business, social media, artist development, and the art of protecting and preserving her pop star daughter's youth. She and her husband were savvy enough to create a college fund for Samantha, and were also forward thinking enough to lay groundwork for Samantha's social media presence, before her career began to show signs of traction. Perhaps the one most insightful thing Terry has done for her daughter, has been to ensure that she has always had an out. As much as she's excited for her daughter's career, Terry has never wanted Samantha to feel the pressure that comes with lack of choice where her life and music career are concerned. Terry attributes much of the success she's shared with her daughter Samantha to video courses offered by music business educator Rick Barker. She spoke very highly of the content that Rick offered, much of which was free on YouTube. We also talk about the challenges and frustrations that she and Samantha have faced. Most people in touch with the music business have come to understand that artist development by record labels is a thing of the past. Terry in fact says it's all up to the artist, or in her daughter Samantha's case, it's all up to the family. She also speaks candidly about the fact that the music business is numbers driven. I suppose this could be said about most if not all businesses. Even so, she feels that there are many positives in the music business, including people who are willing to share what they've learned. When I asked what recommendations she had for other parents in her boat, she started off by admitting had she known how much money she'd spend on Samantha's endeavors, she probably would have run in the opposite direction. She laughs and admits, however, that it's been a very gradual investment. Two recommendations she shared were on recording albums and social media. Terry has learned that recording an entire album is probably not a good idea for young artists, as they're likely to have a completely different sound from the time an album project is started to the time it's completed and marketed. Self-motivated behavior is something Terry believes parents should look for as a sign that a professional music career is right for their child. Her advice on social media–start by choosing three channels, get familiar with them, and identify the one you like best. Once you find your favorite social channel, share real moments, like rehearsal performances. Finally, she says it's about baby steps, or as I like to say, it's a long game. At age 16, Samantha LaPorta is the youngest guest I've had on the podcast. Our conversation took place on the same day that her single “It's a Girl Thing” was released. She's a Disney Radio artist, something she always wanted to be, and she's has acquired a number of awards and accolades, including social site Sweety High's Best Holiday Songs of 2016, NCMA's 2015 New Teen Artist and Best Teen Video, and the 2015 Nashville Universe Awards nominations for Rising Star, Best Song, and Best Female Artist. Clearly Samantha has caught the attention of people who matter, which is a testament to her drive and self motivation. All of this in spite of the fact that she's at a very early point in the trajectory of her fast moving career. Samantha has been described musically as a mix of Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. She sees herself as a pop singer with R&B in her soul. Even though she regularly performs for large crowds, Samantha admits that she was pretty shy in the beginning. She shared with me that she used to be so shy, that she couldn't look at people or have either of her parents in the same room while singing. Clearly she's broken out of her shell, but says she's still working to become the performer she really wants to be. Nowadays Samantha performs, records and works on her skills as a songwriter through practice, coaching and collaborating. She loves playing guitar too. She loves the language and what it gives her as a songwriter. Samantha's mother Terry is very active in the management of Samantha's career. I got the strong impression that there's good balance between Samantha's music, school and social life, thanks to her parents. Terry told me she wants Samantha to reflect on this time in her life, with memories of an actual childhood. Part of this balance includes Samantha's active involvement in giving back, which she does by performing for children with medical needs, the elderly, and anti-bullying events. She's mega talented, and I know it's a tough business; but I think she'll go far. She's got a good head on her shoulders and great parents guiding her along the way. Lookout indie pop. Did you guess It's a Boy Girl Thing, a "hilarious" take on gender roles that felt already years out of date by the time it was released that also featured Sharon Osbourne as an American mom, an endless series of sex jokes, and the song Candle in the Wind on endless repeat? No. Of course you didn't. How could you? Listen to the Why Watch crew discuss these issues over two drinks and then offer up some body-swapped fixes of their own. This week’s episode features improvisor and writer Rachel Chapman (UCB Theater, The Telephone Show, Inside The Disney Vault) We sit on the big red couch and discuss:Combatting hate. Last week’s events in Charlottesville lead us into a great conversation with the help of a resource guide from Southern Poverty Law Center about combatting hate and unifying communities. Another amazing organization, Life After Hate, a nonprofit created in 2011 by former members of the American violent far-right extremist movement that works to combat hate by working individuals who wish to leave a life of hate and violence and helping organizations (community, educational, civic, government, etc.) grappling with the causes of intolerance and racism.Rachel is from Merritt Island, Florida where an osprey was stranded in a canal after being pelted with torrential rain. The osprey was successfully rescued after it made it to shore, and the footage of it swimming to shore reminds Hannah of a Disney character. Also in Florida is an awesome non profit organization, It’s a Girl Thing, an empowerment group in Jacksonville for ages 11-18 that works to encourage and motivate young girls by providing them with life tools that will ensure they lead productive and successful lives.Animal corner features a Golden Retriever that was digging up what seemed to be treasure in the backyard. What the family thought was a time capsule turned out to be 85,000 dollars of black tar heroine!Rachel and I wrap up the episode talking about how excited she is to go on a Disney Cruise with her Grandmother! Alicia brings up her love for Star Wars (including her disdain for Episodes 1-3), Final Fantasy, bloody steaks, and proves that women can objectify the opposite sex just as much and as well as men do.
