Welcome the Bakersfield Museum of Art podcast. This audio series offers entertaining and informative discussion about arts and events at the Bakersfield Museum of Art. The Bakersfield Museum of Art's mission is to inspire and engage diverse audiences by providing a broad spectrum of creative visual arts experiences through exhibitions, educational programs, and community outreach. In a similar fashion, we hope this podcast expounds upon themes in contemporary art and art history. On the evening of November 18, 2021 BMoA hosted a group of artists whose work is included in our current exhibition “On the Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s – 1990s from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection” for an unforgettable symposium. During two separate panel discussions that evening exhibiting artists discussed their experience of working in Los Angeles during the decades that both established Los Angeles as an art counter market to the European art scene, and saw a diversification in the art styles, materials, artists being covered. This episode of the BMoA podcast is a recording of the first panel discussion that evening: California Ethos: Conceptualism and Literalism. Moderated by BMoA Curator of Exhibitions and Collections Rachel McCullah Wainwright, On the Edge artists Don Bachardy, Gregory Wiley Edwards, Astrid Preston, Allen Ruppersberg talk about how social upheaval reverberated through the art world of Los Angeles, the network that developed between artists and the collectors who championed their work, and how the California Cool ethos informed those artists' work.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 554 For this special bonus Horror Club episode, we return to WonderFest to talk with Sam Irvin. Sam is a director, producer, screenwriter, author and the film historian who recently provided the audio commentary for Frankenstein: The True Story. This 1973 film was directed by Jack Smight and written by Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy and contains a very interesting subplot that was slyly snuck past the censors at the time. Featuring a stellar cast including James Mason, Leonard Whiting, David McCallum, Jane Seymour, Michael Sarrazin, Sir John Gielgud, Agnes Moorehead, Sir Ralph Richardson and Tom Baker - listen as we delve into this impressive and often overlooked horror classic.    And as we deal with our own monstrous issues of abandonment and rejection, we also cover… Growing Fangs, Boris Karloff, Universal Studios, Dr. Polidori, magnum opus, Ben-Hur, the Grandfather of every horror host, Peter Lorre, the great wisdom of the executives, Elsa Lanchester, Anne Rice, talking about decapitation at school the next day, 25 boxes of papers, Launchpad McQuack, Richard O'Brien, My Fair Lady, crucified on the mast, Mark Maddox, Hammer horror, Yvonne De Carlo, Frank Langella's Dracula, Rick Baker, solar-powered, Young Frankenstein, Hunt Stromberg Jr., Interview with a Vampire, designing your hospital, the most expensive horror film, Gore Vidal, the White Cliffs of Dover, Lon Chaney Jr., The Vampyre, Maila Nurmi and a giant leap of dramatic license.  “We are doing a magnum opus of the James Whale movies, but… we don't want to just do a remake. We want to make it different… how can we do this differently?!”  For more on WonderFest, go to: https://wonderfest.com/

British writer Christopher Isherwood arrived in Los Angeles after a long, slow bus ride from New York, where he had emigrated with his friend W.H. Auden. After unforgettably chronicling the underworld of interwar Berlin, Isherwood settled into L.A. and its circle of European émigrés, writers, painters, and spiritual seekers — Aldous Huxley, Truman Capote, David Hockney, and Don Bachardy, who would become Isherwood’s longtime partner after a chance meeting on Valentine’s Day on the beach. Isherwood wrote for Hollywood — and unlike so many novelists, enjoyed it — translated Hindu scripture, hung out at Musso and Frank’s, and captured L.A. in some of his most acclaimed works, like A Single Man. To celebrate the release of Christopher Isherwood’s The Sixties: Diaries:1960-1969, Zócalo hosted a panel with Don Bachardy, artist Peter Alexander, and Huntington Library curator of manuscripts Sara Hodson to consider the life, work, and legacy of Christopher Isherwood in Los Angeles.
