It is the romantic comedy with zombies... Directed by Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead is the British romantic zombie comedy film which stars Simon Pegg who also co-wrote the film with Wright. Rob and Jason rewind to 2004 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this cult classic that kicked off Wright and Pegg's Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Shaun (Simon Pegg) is a 30-something loser with a dull, easy existence. When he's not working at the electronics store, he lives with his slovenly best friend, Ed (Nick Frost), in a small flat on the outskirts of London. The only unpredictable element in his life is his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), who wishes desperately for Shaun to grow up and be a man. When the town is inexplicably overrun with zombies, Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect both Liz and his mother (Penelope Wilton).

The 2001 romance drama, Iris, captures the life of novelist Iris Murdoch between flashbacks of her youth and her present-day battle with Alzheimer's.  This movie's poignant and effective tug on the heartstrings is no doubt a testament to the stellar cast including Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, and Penelope Wilton.  This film is melancholy, but it packs a punch in just over 90 minutes. As it's Christmas this week we wanted to shake things up and try something a little different... so we decided to talk about a British comedy film which doesn't feature a Goon! A change is as good as a rest and anyway, the film is a cracker. In 1986 John Cleese starred in a Michael Frayn-scripted comic farce called Clockwise, in which he plays headmaster Brian Stimpson who needs to get to far-flung Norwich in order to deliver a speech. Having missed the train, Stimpson enlists the help of one of his pupils to drive him and what follows is a series of hilarious mishaps and misunderstandings with countless laws being broken along the way. It was the film that inspired Cleese to embark upon A Fish Called Wanda and is one of the greatest - if sometimes overlooked - British comedy films of the eighties. Chris Diamond of TV Cream returns for a fourth time and finally gets the key to the executive washroom. Having not seen the film since it was released he had a lot to say and props are given to the supporting cast including Stephen Moore, Joan Hickson, Tony Haygarth and Penelope Wilton. As for Stimpson: is he, as Tyler suggests, a 'less Tory' Basil Fawlty? This and many more questions are asked, and some of them are even answered!

Today I look at the fantastic 2004 zombie comedy film, Shaun of the Dead. Directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Simon Pegg, I am a big fan of this flick. Pegg stars as Shaun, a downtrodden salesman in London who is caught in a zombie apocalypse with his friend Ed (Nick Frost). The film also features Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, and Penelope Wilton. It is the first installment in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.

Comedy writer/performer Katherine - "the new Victoria Wood" and star of the Horrible Histories movie, shares never-before-heard bits of her writing for TV and radio. In 2010 the first episode of her debut radio comedy, North by Northamptonshire, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 starring Sheila Hancock, Penelope Wilton, Mackenzie Crook and Geoffrey Palmer. Two more series followed, one of which was nominated for a Sony Radio Award. Also for Radio 4 she went on to write 3 series of All Those Women, starring Lesley Manville and Marcia Warren, one series of Guilt Trip, starring Felicity Montagu and Olivia Nixon, and she co-wrote 2 series of Ability with Lee Ridley. In 2016, Katherine's radio play Where This Service Will Terminate debuted on Radio 4 about two strangers who sit next to each other on a train from Paddington to Penzance. The play had a positive critical and public response and led to four follow up plays, the last of which Where This Service Will Depart, was broadcast in 2020.
