"Lucky for you I come with my own airbags." We watched "Elvira's Haunted Hills" and she really is going to put someone eye out with those things.  We already been knew that in this house we will throw down for "Elvira Mistress of the Dark" - the movie and the person. But does the long awaited sequel hold up? It took 13 years to write, finance and produce this homage to the Roger Corman produced, Vincent Price starring, Edgar Allan Poe movies of the 1960's and you can feel the inspiration all over the place. The spooky sets, the baroque (by way of the swinging '60s) costumes and of course Elvira herself, all give this movie the authenticity of those camp classics. Written by Cassandra Peterson and her longtime writing partner John Paragon (Jambi the Genie himself) the script is full of campy one liners, bawdy jokes and cheap visual gags - you know... classic Elvira. We may go Hard for the original movie, but this one really grows on you... kinda like a fungus - and that's why we love it! We've logged it 4 times on Letterboxd this year and it keeps getting funnier, EVERY SINGLE TIME WE SEE IT! Dennis is joined via Zoom by filmmaker Sam Irvin. Sam is the author of the memoir I Was a Teenage Monster Hunter, which is about his childhood obsession with horror movies and the interviews he conducted with horror personalities for his fanzine Bizarre. Sam talks about his Cinema Paradiso-esque childhood; working at his family-owned movie theater, having to change the marquee when he was afraid of heights, getting to take home the posters after a film's run and cleaning up vomit after screenings of The Exorcist. He also talks about his creative and personal relationship with Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira Mistress of the Dark. He recalls how he got the job directing Elvira's Haunted Hills, bonding over sad Joni Mitchell music and how just this year, he and Cassandra took a tour group of 30 Elvira super fans to visit the Haunted Hills locations in Romania and Transylvania. Sam also talks about being more in demand as a director at 67 than ever before. He's directed seven Hallmark and Lifetime films in the past 12 months, including this month's Love In Zion National: A National Park Romance and the holiday film Check Inn to Christmas. Other topics include: cold-calling his way into becoming Brian DePalma's assistant, Ian McKellan's naked prank on the set of Gods and Monsters, directing three seasons of the gay vampire series Dante's Cove and getting to visit the set of the James Bond film The Man With the Golden Gun when he was 18 and hearing sex stories from a drunk Herve Villechaize in the back of a Rolls Royce afterwards.

In this episode, we chat with Cassandra about her new memoir, "Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark". We chat about everything from coming out as queer, to living in a haunted house, to sharing a treehouse with a gun fanatic. It was a joy to chat with this amazing horror icon, and an interview you won't want to miss. And as a very special added bonus, we went a step further and invited Sam Irvin, the director of Elvira's sophomore film, "Elvira's Haunted Hills", to stop by and chat about his career, his experience working with two of the biggest names in horror musical comedy, and what makes this movie the perfect cult classic to catch this Halloween as it's re-released on blu-ray! After a teenage publishing career of film fandom and criticism, Sam Irvin's first professional job came on the set of Brian De Palma's The Fury. Quickly, and for the next few years, he would become De Palma's assistant and a jack of all trades on movies from Fury to Dressed to Kill, before starting his own directing career and eventually coming back to film writing. On today's episode, joined once again by Ted Haycraft, we discuss:- Irvin's early career writing about Hammer films and interviewing actors like Vincent Price and Emma Peel;- his first contact with De Palma, then casting Carrie alongside George Lucas (who was then casting Star Wars) by inviting him to a film festival at his college;- and how that led to Irvin braving a phone call asking to work on The Fury.Also:- Interacting with the established crew for The Fury's Chicago crew;- why it's difficult to see the first film one worked on objectively;- his work with a young filmmakers Mark Romanek and Keith Gordon on Fury, Home Movies, and Dressed to Kill;- how Irvin progressed this to his first short and feature films.Sam Irvin is a veteran director, producer and screenwriter for movies and television who began his career as the assistant to Brian De Palma. His directing credits include Guilty as Charged (Rod Steiger, Lauren Hutton, and Heather Graham), Out There (Bill Campbell and Billy Bob Thornton), Elvira's Haunted Hills (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark), and Fat Rose and Squeaky (Louise Fletcher and Cicely Tyson). Every now and then you meet a true raconteur. Someone who not only has the ability to tell tales in an amusing way but who has enough life experiences accumulated to have stories that seem to be inexhaustible. Sam Irvin is such a person! Sam is a filmmaker who got his start in the industry working with Brian De Palma in the 1970's on THE FURY (1978), HOME MOVIES (1979) and DRESSED TO KILL (1980) but his journey began as a movie obsessed young man in North Carolina. While just a grade school kid, he started his own movie fanzine in which he reviewed horror, science fiction and fantasy films as well as conducting interviews with his horror film idols. Over his high school years he interviewed Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Freddie Francis, Terence Fisher and even managed to travel to England to speak with them in person. The story of his visit to the set of THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (1974) is incredible! In the 1980's he shifted to being a producer, directed a short film and worked as the Vice President of Marketing for several film distribution companies before finally getting to fulfill his dream of becoming a director. And then there's the little story of making the amazing ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS (2001) with the great Cassandra Peterson. But I should just let Sam tell you his story as he does a much better job than I ever could. Among all his other projects Sam is also an author and our current pandemic Hell has fueled his creativity in an odd way. Along with artist Dan Gallagher he has produced the book Sam's Toilet Paper Caper! Styled as a parody of the classic children's series of Little Golden Books it relates the mostly true adventures of Sam as he attempts to replenish his supply of white gold – rolls of TP. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Sam Irvin, Award Winning Director, Author “I Was A Teenage Monster Hunter!”About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Sam Irvin, is a multi-award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, author and educator whose love of horror movies as a child made him determined to meet and get to know the people who made those movies. As a young teenager he produced a hugely popular fan magazine called “Bizarre”, dedicated to celebrating and promoting horror movies and the people who made them. Through a combination of ingenuity, tenacity, luck, and sheer force of will, he was able to meet, interview and sometimes befriend dozens of legendary stars including Vincent Price, Ingrid Pitt, Peter Cushing, Jane Seymour, Christopher Lee, Diana Rigg, Robert Morley, Michael York, and many others.  And get this – by the time he was 13, he had already met a whole slew of big stars – everyone from George Burns, Jane Russell and Natalie Wood, to Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Robert DeNiro. The fascinating journey of his remarkable youth as a self-proclaimed “professional groupie”, is the subject of his memoir entitled, “I Was a Teenage Monster Hunter: How I Met Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and More.” The book is a must-have for horror movie fans, because it contains the full text of his fabulous interviews with members of horror movie royalty at the pinnacle of their popularity.  Our guest began his filmmaking career as an assistant to legendary director Brian DePalma, working on the classic movies “The Fury” and “Dressed to Kill”. Since then, he has directed over 50 films including “Elvira's Haunted Hills”, “Guilty as Charged”, “Oblivion”, “Out There”, “Acting on Impulse”, “Backlash: Oblivion 2”, “Magic Island”, “Fatal Acquittal”, and “Kiss of a Stranger”, which he also wrote. For television, he's directed “Strip Mall”, “From Here on OUT”, “My Sister is so Gay”, and “Dante's Cove”. He also co-produced the Academy Award winning movie, “Gods and Monsters”, as well as “The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy”, and the brilliant “Home Movies”, directed by Brian DePalma. And if all of that weren't enough, he wrote the acclaimed biography “Kay Thompson: From Funny Face to Eloise”, which led to being a consultant on Liza Minnelli's Tony Award winning Broadway show, “Liza's At the Palace”. He's also written 3 other books: “The Epic Saga Behind FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY”, which provides a fascinating account of the making of the groundbreaking 1973 TV movie; he's written a novel entitled, “ORBGASM: An Erotic Pulp Sci-Fi Satyricon”; and he wrote a hilarious children's book called “Sam's Toilet Paper Caper!” He has also taught graduate courses on filmmaking at USC, and over the years he has won FOUR prestigious Rondo Awards.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/To learn more about Sam Irvin, go to:https://www.facebook.com/sirvinprod/https://www.instagram.com/sam_irvin_director/https://twitter.com/SamIrvin8https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqZVZjIHCCZ35-8qu-HTqpA@harveybrownstone,#harveybrownstone,@harveybrownstoneinterviews,#harveybrownstoneinterviews,#SamIrvin,@SamIrvin,#sirvinprod,@sirvinprod,#horrormovies,#Elvira,#VincentPrice,#LizaMinnelli,#KayThompson,#BrianDePalma,#IWasaTeenageMonsterHunter,#ChristopherLee,#PeterCushing,#DianaRigg,#MichaelYorkAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
