Nineteen Seventy-Six. America's bicentennial was a great year for cinema, with films like A Star is Born, King Kong, All the President's Men, Carrie, and The Omen heating up the box office, and instant classics Rocky and Network earning the most accolades. After a six-decade career in the director's chair, Alfred Hitchcock released his last film, Family Plot, around the same time that an up-and-coming young director by the name of Martin Scorsese released his breakout hit, the fifth film of his budding career. Centered on a disillusioned New York cabbie played by Robert De Niro, this rain-and-neon-soaked meditation on summer in the city proved to be a defining outing by both actor and director. With a cast including Cybill Shephard, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle, Harvey Keitel, and a very young Jodie Foster, the film racked up awards, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes and four nominations at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for De Niro, and Best Supporting Actress for Foster. Despite controversies over its content, the film was hailed as a hit. Baran Sogut, a Sydney-based Kurdish community activist, was part of a delegation from Australia which, in September, visited the Democratic Autonoumous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), the third of Syria liberated by Kurdish freedom fighters from the Bashar al-Assad dictatorship in the Rojava revolution of 2012 and over the following years from the brutal and reactionary Islamic State of Syria (ISIS). The delegation included Greens Senator David Shoebridge, the first Australian parliamentarian to visit NE Syria, as well as Kurdish Greens Inner West councillor Ismet Tashtan. Sogut spoke to Green Left's Peter Boyle about the gains and challenges of the Rojava revolution and in particular about his visit to Kobane, the city that was liberated from a siege by several Islamic fundamentalist militias in 2014–15. Mel Brooks' beloved blockbuster is a satire of the classic Universal monster story and he's got his co-writer Gene Wilder leading a fantastic cast. Gene is a riot himself in one of Ryan's Top 10 fave comedies, even if Young Frankenstein turned out to be A LITTLE less of a grin-fest than it's been in the past. The comic highlights remain some of the most-hilarious of all time though, particularly the blind man, "Puttin' On The Ritz" and just about everything Marty Feldman and Madeleine Kahn do. Tim Spector is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Head of the Department of Twin Research at King's College London. He was one of the co-founders of the ZOE Covid Symptom study, which for which he was awarded an OBE. He has also written best-selling books about the relationship between what we eat and our health and well-being. Tim was born in London in 1958 into a medical family. His mother was a physiotherapist and his father was an eminent pathologist, although Tim initially resisted his father's encouragement to follow him into medicine. Once qualified, Tim specialised in rheumatology before switching to epidemiology. In 1992, he set up a large-scale research study of twins which now has more than 15,000 identical and non-identical twins taking part.After a health scare in 2011, Tim became more interested in how we can influence the microbes in our gut to help us stay well. He has published several books on the science of eating well and is a pioneer in personalised food nutrition.Tim lives in London with his wife, who is also a doctor.
