Morgan is a 2013 inductee into the Scarborough Walk of Fame. Rufus John is an award-winning Black Caribbean-Canadian R&B/ Soul singer & songwriter is gearing up to release the single, Freedom Marching (Part I). The song was available for pre-order since January 10th, 2022, and will be featured on the 3-song EP, The Freedom Marching Project, which is slated to be released on February 4th, 2022. In support of the release of the EP, the project will also consist of; two official music videos, one in-studio performance video, a Call-To-Action Commercial, a Behind the Scenes Docuseries and a website that will feature resources and information for those who are willing to watch, listen and learn to then #JoinTheMarch. The Freedom Marching Project founded by John, was inspired by the thousands of people who had the courage to use their voice to take action by marching through streets all over the world shouting, “Black Lives Matter!” in what is hailed as the most significant civil rights movement of our generation. The goals of the Project are to use the creative power of Art, Education and Activism to; honor the community leaders who are fighting daily on the frontlines for equity, access, diversity, participation, and rights for Black, Indigenous, racialized communities, to shed light on the lived experiences of Black, Indigenous & Racialized communities and to provide resources and information to those who want to Stay Informed, Get Connected and Take Action. John's own music tells life stories of his past. A certified youth worker and mentor, John's goal is to bring to the fore-front, deeply embedded issues experienced by the youth he helps and to inspire those who want to do more, to listen, to learn and join the movement. John's mandate has always been to not just connect but to engage in what is happening in the world. John's patience & commitment comes from his own experiences & mistakes and the people that helped him. Walking alongside the youth he mentors is not only necessary for their journey but for his. Being in for the long term is important. Showing up is key. John used his connections within the music industry to bring together some Juno & Grammy award winners & nominees to lend their voices and talents to this special project. Collectively the talented group is called, United Artists 4 change and the ensemble features over 40 Black and Racialized Artists, Musicians and Producers from around Canada. The EP was produced by Da-Rell Clifton, vocally produced by Gary McAuley, Rufus John & Darren Hamilton, and mixed/mastered by Dan Brodbeck. Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them. Our guest on the May 23, 2021 edition of Black Canada Talking™ was Ryan Singh. A BIPOC TV and Film artist, Ryan began his career as an actor. His passion for storytelling led him to direct and produce before he began writing projects. Ryan has received several awards for his work. His films have screened at several film festivals globally. In 2019, Ryan received an invitation to the 2019 Toronto Writer's Conference and in 2020 he participated in the BIPOC Children TV Writing Boot Camp where he was mentored by several industry professionals from Nelvana, Disney, Netflix, Corus, CBS, NBC and started development on two television series. Ryan continues to develop a slate of projects including 2 feature films supported by Telefilm Development Fund. Ryan, Kirk Taylor, Dwayne Morgan and Aaron Manswell talked about Memento: A South African Artventure and H.E.N.R.I.. Their journey sees the adventurers bridge the knowledge of Africa from second-hand information to a first-hand experience as seen through the eyes of Spoken word artist Dwayne Morgan and Dancer April Mullings. Their journey is facilitated by Ramie Veerappan, an 79-year vibrant activist who lived through the apartheid era, left the country and later returned to the new South Africa, a place she always loves but now wants to share with the world. H.E.N.R.I. follows a grieving 7-year-old Simon after the loss of his father, as he seeks answers from his Artificial Intelligence (AI) communicator while his mother and twin sister try to adjust to their new reality. A family affair, H.E.N.R.I. was co-written by Singh and his six-year-old twins, Ava (Tall Boyz, Handmaid's Tale) and Sebastian (Suits, Handmaid's Tale, Silent) who also appear in the film. 100% of the cast of H.E.N.R.I. was BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) and more than 80% of the crew was BIPOC or women, including DGC director Katarzyna Kochany, producer/actor Andrea Grant (Get Rich or Die Tryin', The Listener), and composer Aaron Manswell. The entire VFX crew is BIPOC, including VFX artists Adrian Bobb, Colin Walcott, Cait Salmon, as well as Akash Singh and his team at Akash Productions. H.E.N.R.I. is recipient of seven Global awards, Programmed in 8+ festivals including a not yet released Oscar Qualifying festival. The flim is playing in three films festivals in the next two weeks including Calgary Black Film Festival, Hamilton Black Film Festival, and US premiere at the New York City Independent Film Festival. They are engaging in these activities full-time, part-time, as a side hustle and making their passions and visions come to life. I believe the community needs to hear about YOU! Dwayne has been recognized and received many awards such as the 2018 winner of the Sheri-D Wilson Golden Beret Award for Career Achievement in the Spoken Word. In 2016, he was a finalist for the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2013, he was inducted in to the Scarborough Walk of Fame and has received both the African Canadian Achievement Award, and the Harry Jerome Award for Excellence in the Arts, just to name a few, plus he is the author of 12 books such as Fairytales (2018), No Apologies (2016), Before I Was Born (2015), Everyday Excellence (2013). In January 2020 he and two other spoken poets opened for President Barak Obama when the former president spoke at an event organized by the Economic Club of Canada, in partnership with the Global Institute for Conscious Economics. Dwayne has performed for other notable such as the former Governor General of Canada, The Honourable Michaëlle Jean, the late leader of the NDP, Jack Layton, and has shared the stage with many of Canada’s top artists including Russell Peters, Kardinal Offishal, Jully Black, and Nelly Furtado, while opening for international artists Alicia Keys, and recording with Canadian artists, including Drake. Anuj and Dwayne dive deep into many important territories, from race, the experience of being black in this world, creating spaces and platforms for others to shine, to being a man, fatherhood, sociopolitical polarization, the importance of self love, and paying it forward. Black male students from grades 8-10 will have the opportunity to network and learn about future academic pathways and positive transitions at The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference. The conference, set to take place May 24, 2017, will offer students and faculty in attendance a unique learning environment and the chance to meet community leaders. Keynote speaker, Dwayne Morgan, will address the audience in the morning. The local award winning spoken word poet will share his story that focuses on everyday excellence. Francis Asheri will serve as the alumni youth speaker for the event. The former DDSB student trustee from Ajax HS won the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership in 2014. Durham District School Board alumni, teachers and community members will lead presentations throughout the day. A variety of presentations include “February is Black History Month – What Should I Be Getting Out of This?” and “#Blackmencarefree – What Lebron, Kendrick and the 13th can teach us about Masculinity in 2017” as well as many others. Charles Senior and Dwayne Hartley from the Durham District School Board were on our show to talk about The Cypher: Black Male Empowerment Conference. Al St. Louis is a Toronto based actor, poet, spoken artist and motivational educator. Using the art of poetry, Al composes thoughts and words that penetrate deep within the psyche, opening portals into other realms of thought, inviting listeners to participate in an inspirational awakening. He is the CEO and founder of When Words Are Spoken. He coordinates a number of theme-based spoken events each year featuring established and up and coming poets and musicians. Al has worked with various entertainers such as John Singleton, Spike Lee, Andre 3000, Tyrese, Dwayne Morgan, Jemini, 50 Cent, Toya Alexis and Maestro Fresh Wes. He also uses his voice for singing with instruments or accompanied by his band "The SoulMates". Al is a motivational educational and brings his spoken word to high school, facilities, workshops and presentations to uplift, inspire and educate the younger generation. He is also the owner of Loc 'N' Twist Natural and Hair Studio.
