In a trying time where PBS could be defunded and Nelvana go under, we felt it was necessary to tackle a big hitter that served as a cornerstone for the domination of educational television in the 90s. It's The Magic School Bus - an all time classic that many do not realize is technically Canadian (the best kind of Canadian). Also, some mildly depressing Canadian federal election chatter because it is actually relevant for once!Episode covered for the podcast was episode 8 "In the Haunted House." Detective work in the cartoon world is a dog-eat-dog racket. Ace Hart, Private Eye, he'd know. This animated German Shepherd deals with every case thrown at him by his animator Eliot Shag, and even has the nerve to talk back if it's not going so great. Yup, it's a fusion of animation and puppetry courtesy of Nelvana and the Jim Henson Company with some of the cleverest film noir parody ever on Saturday mornings. With special guest, artist Will Carroll!

Welcome to Jake's Happy Nostalgia Show, the podcast where nostalgia comes alive! On this episode, we have a conversation with Michael Hirsh, the creative force behind so many cherished childhood memories. Michael co-founded Nelvana, the studio that brought us classics like Little Bear, Franklin, Babar, Max & Ruby, The Magic School Bus, Rolie Polie Olie, and many others. If that wasn't enough, he then launched Cookie Jar Entertainment, where he co-created The Doodlebops and executive produced hits like Arthur, Caillou, and Johnny Test. Michael discusses the evolution of children's television, discussing the making of these iconic shows, the challenges of adapting beloved books into animated series, and the lasting impact these programs have had on generations of kids! We also cover Michael's new memoir, Animation Nation: How We Built a Cartoon Empire.

We are back in some familiar territory - a shoddy, obscure Nelvana production (#SaveNelvana) and a radical adaptation of Greek Mythology made for children. It'sMythic Warriors: Guardians of the Legend -contractually obligated fodder produced through a brief lucrative partnership with television network CBS. Filling out an entire Saturday morning cartoon block requires a lot of man hours and animation, and so inevitably, some stuff might not be quite up to standard. But god damn it, Nelvana needs to cash in on the success of Disney'sHercules (1997).Episode covered for the podcast is Episode 6 "Persephone and the Winter Seeds." Written by Peter Colley. This week, we start off with a sobering call to action regarding the uncertain future of our beloved Nelvana before awkwardly segueing into talking about one of their longest running series. Financial mismanagement and executive payoffs over at Corus Entertainment may very well lead to the shuttering of one of Canada's most prolific animation studios, and while talking about what a momentous loss that would be for our industry, we also chat a bit about Nelvana's Max and Ruby. A show about bunny siblings for babies that we both hated. Episode covered for the podcast is Episode 26 "Max's Thanksgiving/Max's Pretend Friend/Fireman Max." What were the Seinfeld cast up to in the 80s just before they became mega-stars, and Paulo thought Cheetara was the only scantily-clad, cat-like humanoid he had eyes for...until he watched Rock and Rule. On this week's Pride special, we are taking you back to a dark time for LGBT representation in children's entertainment where the idea of a same-sex kiss was shot down by corporate meddling in the pre-production phase. Ok...maybe not that far back. Back in 2017, a little Nelvana magical girl show could have been one of the first steps forward for moderate representation of LGBT characters. Unfortunately for Mysticons, Nickelodeon was not willing to support the production team's vision. And we needed to sell toys...a capitalist tale as old as time. Once a year, on a late spring day when Art usually has something better to do, Jay and Robbie talk about their summer plans.  Welcome to summer.   Movie releases abound, but will they go to the theater or wait till the streaming begins and perhaps watch on Robbie's new deck?  Will Jay get the hang of his fancy device that takes a lot of the stress out of smoking meats, and will his back porch be ready to host the first annual Guys of Summer eat-fest? Will they travel, or just let their kids come to them?   Most importantly, you'll hear Jay's plans for flying through his neighborhood in 2026 if he can raise the $128K necessary to make it happen.  Meanwhile, Robbie will be waiting for a resurrection of the ultimate Bat.  And for the first time in many weeks, Nelvana of the Northern Lights gives hope that not all superheroes from the 1940's are regrettable.   Summer is here, you're going to be working in the yard anyway, so you might as well listen.

The year's biggest Star Wars event is coming to the Peach State. In a year without a Star Wars Celebration convention, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors (GASWC) is busy creating a vintage and modern collector's dream event. During the May 4th weekend, more than 150 passionate Star Wars collectors will travel to Kennesaw, Georgia for three days of panels, activities, meals, collection tours and the unforgettable moments only an event like this could deliver. And the weekend's room sales event may be the best one in years, with collectors bringing some of the rarest and previously unseen prototypes and production items. Join host David Quinn as he sits down with Georgia Alliance members Narayan S. Naik, Jason Wasulko and Glen Williams, for a behind-the-scenes look at the Rogue Fun weekend. In this two-part series, the Georgia team will explain the origins of the event, as well as what to expect for the weekend's itinerary, and why it takes a community (and a few former Kenner and Nelvana employees) to build something as special as Rogue Fun. This is the weekend where collecting and the community collide in Georgia. And this is Star Wars: Prototypes and Production! *Photos courtesy of Narayan Naik, Jason Wasulko and Glen Williams.
