Terry David Mulligan joins Blues lifer Robert Finley in the media tent at the Edmonton Folk Festival. Robert spins the stories of how he went from losing most of his sight to becoming the hot new voice in the blues. Inviting himself to do a cold walk-on at the Blues Festival in St Helena. It's quite a story he tells. The crowd loved him and that set things in motion. The Music Maker Relief Foundation, a non-profit blues support system, heard him busking in the streets and offered to help. Finley released his first album “Age Don't Mean a Thing” in 2016. Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys heard him and they started recording together – with Dan as producer. They've now done 4 albums together. Each one is bigger and better. The latest is Black Bayou. There will be no more busking for Robert Finley. He's 70 years old and an overnight sensation!!
There were many highlights, none more so than the closing act on Sunday - Alison Krauss & Robert Plant. In fact they were so good I bought tickets to see them again on Tuesday night at the QE Theatre! Fabulous band! There were lots of other highlights from Edmonton on today's show, as well as a bunch of new releases and a few Rogue concert previews

The last two festival directors join us on The Summer Stew - Terry Wickham - Edmonton Aug 8-11 Many years later the musical leader at Edmonton Folk Festival. As you know, he's a natural storyteller and this year he's telling stories of the growing indigenous component of the festival. Also how it all started to grow within the fest, it involves the Chieftains. Terry talks about how he discovers artists, why certain artists strike a chord in him and how he had to keep a headliner booking secret for 7 months. The complete interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the video on the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel. Jenna Klein Waller - Canmore Aug 3-5 It's year one for Jenna. She has stayed in touch with the other artistic directors. Learning even more as she went. The one thing the festival wanted to focus on was finding a younger audience. Jenna talks about the artists that her younger audience wants to see and hear.
It all started as a single interview about the Edmonton Folk Festival. We seemed to be talking about the “other“ festivals and could they survive the Covid years. That conversation turned into the first group interview with the artistic directors of Calgary, Winnipeg, Canmore and Vancouver Folk Festivals. It was fun and informative, so we've decided to make it a yearly gathering. Here's the guest lineup this year. They each bring with them stories of the artists they booked and why. [caption id="attachment_29315" align="alignnone" width="1024"] Vancouver Island Music Festival[/caption] Doug Cox – July 12-14 Vancouver Island Music Festival (Courtney) Chris Frayer – July 11-14 Winnipeg Folk Festival Fiona Black – July 19-21 Vancouver Folk Festival Kerry Clark – July 25-28 Calgary Folk Festival Jenna Klein Waller – Aug 3-5 Canmore Folk Festival Terry Wickham – Aug 8-11 Edmonton Folk Festival This week our interview guests are… Artistic Directors of Vancouver Island Music Festival (Doug Cox) & Winnipeg Folk Festival (Chris Frayer) Both festivals start next weekend. Moving is never “fun” but along the way (if you're lucky) you find little treasures. During our latest move, I found boxes and cases with interviews. It got me to thinking – where is that Solomon Burke Interview? We had talked at the Edmonton Folk Festival several years earlier and in 2010 when he was releasing a new album Nothing's Impossible. Produced by Willie Mitchell in Memphis. Same Studio, producer, musicians as Rev Al Green! We had a great chat and off he went – passing away weeks later as he passed through Amsterdam's airport. I simply couldn't find the heart to go back and listen to the interview. Every time I heard the first words I started to tear up. So. I walked away from the interview thinking the day will come when I can deal with it. Well, today's the day. Solomon Burke was asked in an interview “are you a gospel/church singer or a blues singer?”..Solomon's reply was “I'm a soul singer” He was the first artist to use the phrase. The man was a preacher, singer, writer, mortician! When it came to the music business he was not to be messed with. If you get a chance check out his life story. It's a wild ride. Solomon Burke by-the-numbers Performed 55 years. 38 studio albums. 17 record labels. Grammy winner. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 17 million albums sold. In 2008 was #89 of Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 greatest singers of all time. AND Father of 21 children and Grandfather of 90 Grandkids.
Episode 27 features Prince Edward Islands' very own Dyland Menzie. He’s performed alongside acts like City & Colour and Ron Sexsmith and at major events like Canadian Music Week and the Edmonton Folk Festival, and if he continues on his current trajectory of each new song, each new release eclipsing its predecessor, he’ll soon be impossible to ignore. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shadowscaperecords/support
Once singer/songwriter Danielle Knibbe earned the nickname "The Lyric Doctor" due to her intrinsic ability to channel human feelings through songs like an actual medical doctor. This woman was born to make you cry, feel and emote. Now Danielle calls Toronto home, but the musician was born and raised on in the prairies in Alberta, Canada. She knew that performing was what she wanted to pursue even as a young child. She discovered songwriting after attending the Edmonton Folk Festival at age 12, taught herself to play the guitar and started playing for anyone who would listen. Danielle also plays in a band with her husband, Connor Walsh and longtime bandmate Bryn Besse. She talks about what it's like to play with her husband - apparently they don't perform well together as a duo, which is hilarious to hear. We also talk about the concept of Ribcage songs, when you're feeling guarded and then vulnerable or heart songs. Danielle is kind, funny, empathetic and a blast to talk to! I really enjoyed our conversation and I took like a fish to water to her music. Hope you enjoy! https://americansongwriter.com/american-songwriter-podcast-network/basic-folk-podcast/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

We’re pre-recorded one more time, but we’ve got some stellar material on this episode. This week is our look back at the 32nd Edmonton Folk Music Festival, held last weekend. We’ll tell you about the highlights and surprises, the hits and the misses. Also, we got to do some in-person interviews with the stars, including Lissie, The Secret Sisters, and Deer Tick. We also got our hands on an eagerly awaited, not-yet-released CD, and managed to get a few words from one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Well worth a listen, I’d say.

We're pre-recorded this week, as all good-hearted local music lovers are at the Winnipeg Folk Festival! As you may know, going to the Winnipeg Folk Festival for the first time in 1993 changed my life forever, and directly led to me hosting this show today. Over the past 18 years, I have had so many amazing experiences at the Winnipeg festival (and others across the country), and this week I take a look back at some of the music and moments that stand out most for me. I've seen and heard some incredible things at those festivals, and I'm very excited to share some of those with you on today's show!
