In this week's episode of ReFolkUs, we chat with Kaeley Jade.We dive into her incredible journey from gigging at just 9 years old to becoming a recording and performing artist. She reflects on how attending industry conferences opened her eyes to the business side of music, shaping her path as an independent, DIY artist. Kaeley also takes us behind the scenes of her work in theatre, including writing the music for the award-winning Two Headed/Half-Hearted musical. As a multidisciplinary artist, Kaeley emphasizes the importance of practicing various art forms and having hobbies outside of music to enhance both your artistic career and creative process, staying refreshed and avoiding burnout.Find Kaeley Jade onlineInstagramFacebookTikTokWebsiteAbout Kaeley JadeKaeley Jade is an award-winning Métis and Settler singer/songwriter, actor, and multidisciplinary artist based in Edmonton, Alberta (amiskwaciwâskahikan). Blending lush imagery and hooky melodic lines to create her own brand of pop-forward indie folk music, Kaeley has performed at venues and festivals across Canada, including the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, JUNOfest, Folk Music Ontario, the Canmore Folk Music Festival, and Coldsnap. Kaeley moves between ballads and bops with ease, and she brings an electricity to the stage whether she is playing an intimate acoustic set or playing alongside her full five-piece band. Kaeley's deep involvement within the music, theatre and film ecosystems have presented her many opportunities to weave her disciplines together; in 2022, Kaeley joined forces with award-winning playwright Trevor Schmidt to create the critically acclaimed country-folk musical Two-Headed/Half-Hearted, which premiered at Northern Light Theatre with Kaeley in the role of “Venus”. Her music has received radio play across the globe, has been reviewed by publications worldwide, and has been featured in several film and television productions. Her vibrant debut full-length album, Turpentine, has earned her significant recognition in the Canadian music scene—she is a Canadian Folk Music Award Winner and 3x Nominee, Western Canadian Music Award Nominee, Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Award Winner and 3x Nominee, SOCAN Indigenous Songwriter Awards Finalist, and 2023 Henry Armstrong Award Recipient.______________Join us in celebrating the finest in folk music at the Folk Music Ontario Conference this October 2nd-6th, plus don't miss the Ontario Folk Music Awards, recognizing the best talent in our vibrant community. He encounters the Warrior backstage and a new song is born.Mostly, Andy waxes lyrical on Canadian folk festivals, their vibe, food, and hotels (always with thick thick walls). However, it is also about co-writing songs with A and B sections—and writing things down immediately, when they happen. This year marks the silver anniversary of the barn-storming acoustic country music juggernaut known as Old Crow Medicine Show. They're a group that traces their roots to busking all across Canada and the United States. Since then, Old Crow Medicine Show has gained commercial success with their distinctively contemporary spin on old-school traditions. The band's song “Wagon Wheel” became certified Platinum in 2013, and is one of the best-known and most oft-covered roots music songs of this century. Old Crow Medicine Show's 25th anniversary is being suitably celebrated in Summer 2023 with the release of the band's 10th studio album, Jubilee.  Founding member Ketch Secor has remained a constant of the band through the last 25 years, and remains the band's lead singer, songwriter and fiddle player. In his early childhood years, Ketch's parents moved him around the country, opening up a series of schools in many different pockets of the United States. It awoke in him a lifelong love of travelling, and of learning. As a teen, he earned himself a scholarship to an illustrious prep school in New England - which is where he first got serious about old-time string band music. Ketch Secor and three other members of Old Crow Medicine Show dropped by CKUA's Edmonton studios just ahead of their headlining set at the 2023 Edmonton Folk Music Festival. They gathered around a single vintage microphone to share live renditions of two songs from Jubilee. Additionally, Ketch joins CKUA's Grant Stovel for an in-depth conversation that's just as wide-ranging, authentic, and full of delightful surprises as the band's music. The Hidden Track Podcast is produced by CKUA Radio and made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. Thanks so much for dropping by the Three Things podcast. Each week from my basement hideout in west Edmonton, I put together an unremarkable list of the three things I noticed I noticed that left behind some happiness or gratitude. It's a way to keep noticing those things. Kinda circular. This week's list: 1. Sounding familiar - Hear ye, hear ye! The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is back. The sounds of the professionals were, as always, wonderful. But there were other welcome notes, too. 2. Segments – I am still trying to piece together where my thoughts went at a construction site. . 3. Whales – After a few days in the sun at the Folk Fest, you start seeing things! The music in the podcast is original. It comes from the composing heart and mind and the piano-playing hands of Brendan McGrath. Following time in a corporate job as operations/safety manager at an engineering company in the Alberta oilfields of Alberta, Holly spent two years in South Africa as a supervisor, It was then that she moved to Vancouver Island and where she bought a café with her partner in Nanoose Bay. This change of pace helped her to start SoundWave in 2015, a choir that has helped connect a group of 80 singers and 5 bandmates. Holly loves music and is hard at work re-releasing and recording new songs for the community. Leadership Victoria helps leaders stand out and change the world, starting here.

I used to see musician Daniel Lanois at least once a year as he toured Canada with various bands..pedal steel was his specialty. I can't begin to explain the joy I had watching his career explode. From his music-filled home growing up in Hull, Que to  his Mothers move to Hamilton Ontario Daniel and his brother Bob were born to play and sing. They built a small studio in her basement and that became their light at the end of the tunnel. Daniel produced enough music with local bands that the one and only Brian Eno asked to meet him and they started working together. This lead to Grammy-winning albums with U2, Bb Dylan plus  Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou  Harris, Neil Young, The Neville Brothers, Willie Nelson. Think about the body of work..Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, Oh Mercy, Time out of Mind, Wrecking Ball, So & Us just as a starter.   -Needless to say, I hadn’t seen Daniel for many years – 21 to be exact – when I found him backstage at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival of a couple of years ago. We started trying to figure out where we last saw each other... It was a studio in Calgary recording a charity single called Land – with The Tragically Hip, Midnight Oil, Crash Vegas, Hothouse Flowers, etc. The single was Land – to bring awareness to clear cut logging in  Clayoquot  Sound. Let's meet one of the world’s greatest producers Daniel Lanois backstage in Edmonton. https://www.daniellanois.com/

What does it take to develop marvelous harmonies in your music career ... or any creative career for that matter? The three singing-songwriting sisters who make up The Staves share their thoughts with you in this episode. Marvin caught up with the UK-born trio in Canada at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival where Emily, Jessica and Camilla Stavely-Taylor describe the organic growth to the development of their group and the popularity gained over several years before finding a record deal, manager and producer. They also talk about the importance of collaboration. You can't do it alone! They talk about collaborating with Justin Vernon of Grammy-winning Bon Iver. Justin himself has been a collaborator with Kanye West (one of the most awarded artists of all time). It's all a virtuous circle. The women each share their own perspective on creative careers. Some of the lessons have to do with the unproductive practice of comparing yourself to others rather than focusing on finding your own voice. The story is still being written as The Staves tour internationally and their following grows. You cannot predict the future but you can continue to influence it on a daily basis. Monetizing Your Creativity - Pursuing a career in film, television, writing, theatre, music & design with your talents

“Life is a rollercoaster!” says Jesca Hoop, an American singer-songwriter whose recordings and live performances have attracted a large following around the world. Jesca's success has been sustained with solo work, plus strong collaborative relationships with other musical artists such as Sam Beam and Tom Waits. In this interview from the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Jesca discusses the importance of relationships with listeners, agents and record companies. In fact, her career demonstrates a balance between art and business. Jesca's straightforward thoughts and opinions on an artist’s unique combination of preparedness, limitations, satisfaction and the ticking of the clock have been forged from high and low points in her career. What responsibilities and agreements need to be met when you reach a level of success such as Jesca’s? And how do you keep working before, during and after that level of success has been achieved? Work with what you’ve got. Decide what you need and how to get it. Or, perhaps, consider some other line of work. You have more choice than you know. My last show for a month featured lots of personal favourites, and previews of Shorefest Day 3 and next weekend's Edmonton Folk Music Festival. The show will be hosted by Paul Norton (Aug 6th & Aug 27), Arthur & Andrea Berman (Aug 13) and Jim Burnett (Aug 20) for the next 4 Saturdays. I return from Denmark for the Labour Day weekend show on September 3rd. Should have heaps of new music to play - and a couple of major festivals to report (Edmonton and Tonder)

Welcome to my festival-addled voice on this week's Folk Oasis. It sounds worse than it feels, and should be okay soon. It was all self-inflicted, in any case. :)While memories are still fresh, I shared musical and personal experiences from my recent visit to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and the VIA Rail trip home to Vancouver from Edmonton. Both good times and I encourage you all to try both experiences. Thanks so much for listening, and hope you'll join me again next week. Keep spreading the good word!Love, Valfolkoasis@gmail.com

Leaving home to find yourself. Finding the resolve to end a marriage to find happiness. These are just a few of the stories Alex Vissia explores in her songs. The Edmonton singer-songwriter began her career in music at age 11. That’s when Vissia and her sisters joined a choir in their hometown of Stony Plain, Alberta. From their modest start playing to seniors homes, The Vissia Sisters when on to play bluesgrass, country and folk songs to audiences at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. The sisters called in quits in 2011, and Alex went solo. Tonight you’ll hear songs for her latest album, Modern Love, along with a few tunes she’s been working on for her next album. We’re pre-recorded one more time, but we’ve got some stellar material on this episode. This week is our look back at the 32nd Edmonton Folk Music Festival, held last weekend. We’ll tell you about the highlights and surprises, the hits and the misses. Also, we got to do some in-person interviews with the stars, including Lissie, The Secret Sisters, and Deer Tick. We also got our hands on an eagerly awaited, not-yet-released CD, and managed to get a few words from one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Well worth a listen, I’d say.

You may not know this — and you may not even agree with it — but Edmonton is a very musical place. We produce a ton of musicians who go on to do great things. Hell, some of them even choose to stay here in town and ply their trade (I'm thinking Bill Bourne of Edmonton Folk Music Festival fame). With such a rich and diverse cross-section of musical talent in Edmonton, Scott and I decided to chat this week with one of Edmonton's up-and-comers. So we brought the talented, the beautiful, the holy-crap-listen-her-amazing-voice Erica Viegas. And you know what Erica told us? She told us that she wanted the use the Unknown Studio to release a new track out into the world. All exclusive-like. So listen to the show for something we can guarantee you've never heard before. Quickly, and stolen from her website, this is what Erica's all about: Raised in Sherwood Park, Alberta in a musical family, Erica has always had a passion for music. Since begging her parents to let her take voice lessons at age 11, she grabbed at every opportunity to be on stage, whether it was singing in a school play or performing the national anthem at an assembly. For more than 10 years, she has been singing at festivals and talent competitions all over Western Canada, including the Alberta Tattoo at Rexall Place, Calgary Stampede, Big Valley Jamboree, and Canadian Search for Miss Universe. In 2003 and 2004, Erica represented the City of Edmonton as Klondike Katie during the Edmonton Klondike Days (now Capital Ex), performing over 50 times during the 10-day festival. Erica's also a U of A Business School graduate with a day job at her alma mater. And she's looking to maybe tour this summer, across Canada or even the US. And I am going to make it my personal mission to try and get Erica up on the stage at the Folk Fest this summer, at the very least as someone who can perform in between main stage sets. She's that good. So good, I think a lot of people need to hear her. So download the episode today! ===================================================== EDMONTON JOURNAL STILL SPONSORS THE UNKNOWN STUDIO ===================================================== It's true! After so much joking and tongue-in-cheek referrals to Edmonton's newspaper of record on our show, the Edmonton Journal decided to put their money where our mouths are, by sponsoring the Unknown Studio this month!
