Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving has announced her sophomore album, Always Will Be, featuring 10 electrifying renditions of songs from her longtime friend Willie Nelson's iconic catalog. The album includes contributions from Amy Helm, Louis Cato, Steve Earle, Chris Pierce, Lizzie No, and Willie himself, and is due out on April 25 via Queen of the Castle Records/Missing Piece Records. Amy Irving and Willie Nelson's decades long friendship began when the pair first met on the set of the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. After dueting on a reimagining of his song "I'm Waiting Forever" for her 2023 debut album, Nelson reached out to Irving with a proposition: Why not record another album, one comprised entirely of his own work? Irving took him up on the offer, and the result is an incredibly heartfelt album, one that is rooted in love and friendship. Over Irving's prolific career, she has been seen in Brian DePalma's Carrie and The Fury, stage performances of Romeo & Juliet with the Los Angeles Shakespeare Society and Broadway's Amadeus. This week, musicians born into powerful family musical traditions recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, commentary from some of these living legacies. Legacy is something handed down from the past. The tradition of folk music and culture is rooted in legacy. Musical legacies can exist in the form of songs, melodies, musical instruments, styles of playing, and sometimes even people. A musician born into a powerful family music tradition may find themselves a living connection to that legacy for thousands of fans. On this week's show, we feature some of these living legacies: Amy Helm; A.J. Croce; Carlene Carter; Dale Jett; and Thom Bresh. Amy Helm is an American singer-songwriter and daughter of The Band drummer Levon Helm and singer Libby Titus. She is a past member of the Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble Band and Ollabelle, as well as her own touring band. Born in Woodstock, New York, Amy spent her childhood between Woodstock, Los Angeles, and New York City. She attended Trinity High School where she studied jazz with Dr. Aaron Bell, while singing in bands, and playing in New York City clubs and bars. A lifelong musician and music-lover, Helm's parents guided her training and influences. She later became a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. Adrian James "A.J." Croce is an American singer-songwriter. He is the son of singer-songwriters Jim Croce and Ingrid Croce. A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He's experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career. Carlene Carter is an American country singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter of the famed Carter Family and her first husband, Carl Smith. She became the step-daughter of Johnny Cash. Between 1978 and the present, Carter has recorded twelve albums, primarily on major labels. In the same timespan, she has released more than twenty singles, including three No. 3-peaking hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Dale Jett is a proud bearer of the Carter Family musical legacy. Son of Jeanette Carter and grandson of A.P. and Sara Carter, Dale performs songs from the Carter Family song book with his group “Hello Stranger.” With his wife Teresa on bass, and Oscar Harris on auto harp, Dale keeps the music of his family tradition alive and relevant. Thom Bresh has led an incredible, multi-faceted life in the entertainment business. To start, his birth father is guitar royalty, Merle Travis. Thom was raised in California during the golden age of television and worked as a stuntman/actor during his youth. He went on to become one of the premier practitioners of his fathers “thumbpicking” style of guitar. Harnessing a quick wit and an equally quick set of ten fingers, there is nothing like a Thom Bresh performance. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of country music legacy and our very own Mark Jones performing in the banjo style of his famous father Grandpa Jones the tune “Mountain Whippoorwill,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater describes therapeutic music and her role as a musician in a pediatric hospital.

I wanted to dig into that inherited narrative and reach for what I could.” The epistolary anthology is a collection of conversations that travel through time, exploring and celebrating womanhood in all its complexities. Silver City blends the folk twang of Helm’s childhood with gospel and soul, drawing inspiration from varied stories: the life of Helm’s great-grandmother, the story of a young fan struggling with substance abuse, Helm’s own life as a single mother and hard-touring singer. Recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, and produced by Josh Kaufman, the album finds Helm exploring themes of womanhood, single motherhood, and personal struggles, offering songs that are deeply personal and narrative-driven. With Silver City, Helm embraces the beauty of age, survival, and transformation through her powerful, story-rooted performances.

Trauma Stories We Don't Share with Grammy Nominated Mary Gauthier Welcome to Episode #15 with special guest Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Mary Gauthier. Today we are talking about stories that we don't feel like we can share. You know the ones, the stories that we call bad, dark, or embarrassing and maybe even just too sad to share. A lot of times there is trauma associated with what happened in this story which becomes wrapped around a shadow of shame that it happened to us in the first place. One thing I know for sure, is that we are close to a breakthrough when a client says this about their story. Why? Often the story we have the most shame around, is the very story that can set us free. Tune in to find out more as Mary share's her own stories behind the songs, and how songs offer a lifeboat to get to the other side of our traumatic stories. You won't want to miss this one! Maybe music really can save your soul! Mary Gauthier's Bio: Photo Credit: Alexa Kinigopoulos “With songwriting as powerful as her, there's no need to go looking for qualifiers.  She's a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there's never a surplus of those.” Randy Lew, Los Angeles Times. Her eleventh the first record in over 8 years consisting of all her own songs, Dark Enough to See the Stars, follows the profound antidote to trauma, Rifles & Rosary Beads, her 2018 collaborative work with wounded Iraq war veterans. It garnered a Grammy nomination for best Folk Album, as well as a nomination for Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Publication of her first book, the illuminating Saved by a Song: the Art and Healing Power of Songwriting, in 2021, brought her more praise.  Brandi Carlile has said, “Mary's songwriting speaks to the tender aspects of our humanness. We need her voice in times like these more than we ever have.”  The Associated Press called Gauthier “one of the best songwriters of her generation.” Mary's songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffet, Dolly Pardon, boy George, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Bettye Lavette, Mike Farris, Kathy Mattea, Bobby Bare, Amy Helm and Candi Staton and have appeared extensively in Film and Television, most recently on HBO TV's Yellowstone. Across the Margin: The Podcast

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Woodstock, New York via North Carolina singer-songwriter Kenny Roby. Roby is the former lead singer of 6 String Drag, which he formed with bassist Rob Keller in the early 1990s, a band which quickly became one of the more notable bands of the Americana movement. The band's style ranged from old style country with a hint of soul and gospel to rock. While 6 String Drag broke up in the late 1990s, Roby continues to make records and play live shows with the Mercy Filter, which includes Scott McCall of $2 Pistols. Roby has released seven solo albums, his latest album — the focus of the episode — is self-titled and written and recorded in Woodstock, NY. Throughout Kenny Roby, the gifted storyteller embraces the spirits of songwriters who once inhabited the very same hills like Fred Neil, Van Morrison, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton, Bobby Charles, Levon Helm and, of course, Bob Dylan. Over the album's dozen tracks, Roby — supported by a cast including Daniel Littleton (guitars), Jeff Hill (bass), Tony Leone (drums) and superb guest vocals from Amy Helm and the legendary John Sebastian on harmonica — takes us on a sprawling walk through the neighborhood of his mind. In this episode host Michael Shields and Kenny Roby discuss Kenny Roby's genesis and the themes present in the album. They talk about the outstanding players on the album such as Amy Helm and John Sebastian while exploring how living in Woodstock, New York led to who contributed to the album's enthralling sound. They discuss Roby's friendship and working relationship with Neal Casal and the gifts that deep acquaintanceship still award Roby, and so much more. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

This week on the show is an incredible singer, songwriter and musician - Amy Helm. Amy has a sublime feel for music, and a really interesting story too. She grew up in New York, partly in the city and I think at various times with her dad in Woodstock - her dad, of course, being legendary Band drummer and singer, Levon Helm. She was around Levon's barn an awful lot and has seen that place go from its humble beginnings to a mecca for roots music, hosting some of the greatest live shows of the early 2000's onwards, known as the Midnight Ramble. Amy started a killer band in the early 2000's called Ollabelle, and they did alot of touring and recording, and made some great records too. When Levon got really sick with cancer in the early 2000's, Amy worked with him as he regained his speaking and eventually singing voice and she ended up producing the incredible Dirt Farmer album with Larry Campbell. Amy has put out 3 records under her own name, the most recent one we got to talk about quite a bit, and it's called “What The Flood Leaves Behind”. It's a masterful album, and she just keeps getting better. We talked about her recording and writing process and just had a great ol' conversation. Enjoy, share and please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!Listen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show.Info on Amy's records, merch and tour dates can be found at www.amyhelm.comThis episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

In 2017 he released his debut solo album Foothill Freeway, which explored the Americana influences that were a hallmark of his former band. The album garnered rave reviews from NPR, No Depression, and Newsday. He hit the road to support the album and made his network television debut on NBC's Today in Nashville. Verse / Chorus / Verse / Chorus / Bridge / Chorus…. The basics of many songs we know and love…The bridge occupies a special spot in that structure as it is a musical idea that adds contrast from the repetitive verse and chorus sections by providing musical variation that makes a song more exciting. Think of it as a transitional section. The great songwriters have used bridges to make ok songs, into amazing and memorable ones.  And…. Those are the ones we are going to discuss today as we give you our favorite Bridges in Songs! And we have a guest today!Zach Djanikian has joined us today! Zach is a singer, composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Philadelphia and over the years has become a go-to collaborator for tons and tons of artists including Amy Helm, Chuck Prophet, Donald Fagen and the Nightflyers, Rachael Yamagata and many others. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateAmy Helm grew up surrounded by some of the most influential musicians in American roots music, including her father Levon Helm, legendary drummer and singer for The Band. That also meant that her childhood was a “very colorful” experience where she was raised by a “village of brilliant and talented people who were also wrestling with the grips of addiction.” When she was a kid, she liked kid things, just like a normal kid. Case in point, she attended the fabled 1976 concert, The Last Waltz when she was five years old. Her most prominent memory: all the candy and snacks her and the other kids were given backstage. She also didn't have a great relationship with her dad until she was a young adult. Levon took her on the road to tour with his blues band, The Barn Burners. He thought she was ready and it was trial by fire each night on the road for young Amy. She learned so much from that experience. After that, she and her dad started his much loved Rambles at The Barn in his Woodstock home. Those nights started as a rent party for Levon who had just overcome addiction, survived throat cancer and had just filed for Bankruptcy. They soon grew into a Woodstock institution, featuring artists such as Emmylou Harris, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello, Phil Lesh and more. After Levon died, Amy decided to record and release her first solo album at 44. Now, she's on her third album, the excellent and very personal What The Flood Leaves Behind. 053: Mark MarshallGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, August 26th of 2020 Music is not content! It’s connection.A quick note: last week’s episode may not have reached you since there was a big traffic burst here on Substack and the whole thing got gummed up for a day, which happened to be the same day I was sending you my regular Wednesday edition. In case you did not get the email, you can still look at the post and listen to the episode, it’s right up on the site where it should be. And the podcast is also in your player’s feed like normal. I put together a great chat with Daniel Wright, and it’s really worth hearing.[photo by Abby Ahmad]I’m in California here with the rolling brownouts and the heat storm, it’s been in the low 100’s here for a week straight. Hard at work on multiple projects as usual, but I think I’m settling into a good groove here. It’s a trip to hold myself to account with everything I start, but I’m getting better at completing the things I start. And it’s partly because I’m really liking some of the stuff I come up with. There’s this thing I’ve been alluding to here and there called the Lazy Cello Suite, which isn’t an entirely original work but I think it’s safe to call it a remix. I basically took the chord changes of the Bach G Major cello suite and made my own notes, played in the way I like to play. It’s lazy-sounding in a good way, a way that doesn’t make you work too hard as a listener. I’m going to make a recording of it soon on my porch and put that out on Bandcamp.I’m also working on some production prototypes for an album which is moving forward. I’m working with last week’s guest, Daniel Wright. It’s still in a very early stage but the energetic read is good on the thing, so stay tuned for more on both of those projects as they develop.Today I’m happy to share my conversation with Mark Marshall. He’s a great guitarist, and very much a connoisseur of guitar tone. In fact, he has an entire website dedicated to the Anatomy of Guitar Tone, which you can find at anatomyofguitartone.com. But he’s much more than a mere gearhead. I’ve worked with him as a producer and in bands, I’ve also admired his work on stage for many years. He’s got that certain presence, one of total focus where you can just tell he’s taking exquisite care with his sounds, and we the listeners benefit tremendously. He’s not just a local cat. He’s logged tens of thousands of miles on the road with the likes of Amy Helm and Sister Sparrow. He collaborates with his wife Abby Ahmad in a great rock/blues band called Fife & Drom, and he’s got his own power guitar trio with Adam Minkoff and Tony Leone called Future Relics. We hear about what it was like growing up in rural Pennsylvania near Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Mark had to take a long journey through darkness into the light, navigating issues with an overbearing collaborator who also happened to be his father. The man had to move mountains to get to where he is today, and just before the Pandemic hit he was hitting the gas on his composition work, so we’ll get a taste of that as well.Once again, if you like the show and you think it deserves a wider audience, do us a solid and share the link with a friend:Or better yet: listen to the Playlist we just started with all the guests and pass that around too. AMY HELM's 'This Too Shall Light',on Yep Roc Records, is marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. The daughter of The Band's legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus, Helm began her musical career as a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and later served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. While ‘This Too Shall Light' is only Helm's second album under her own name, it serves as a comprehensive portrait covering her life's journeys and recoveries; They're the stories that, no matter where they take her, seem to end and begin in the same place like a circle. SETH WALKER has become recognized as one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States; a three dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His latest studio album is 'Gotta Get Back'. WoodSongs Kids: The Wallace Sisters have been harmonizing together since they could talk. The siblings from Lexington, Kentucky enjoy singing for their schools and church choir but a year ago began singing officially as a trio at local events.

When Amy Helm first established herself as a professional musician, she was able to disappear inside her band Ollabelle and create a musical identity. It can be difficult for the offspring of famous, and especially groundbreaking, artists. In Amy's case, her father was the late Levon Helm from The Band, with whom she also recorded and performed. Amy is now touring behind her debut album with her new band, the Handsome Strangers. Even though 'Didn't It Rain' is her first collection released with her name above the title, Amy is clearly a seasoned veteran with a developed voice that's finally really ready to be heard. Amy, Byron Isaacs, Daniel Littleton and David Berger stopped by the studios of Beehive Productions in Saranac, New York to perform a few songs and talk about the inspirations for a few of the new songs.
