Gavin Newsom's press office fired back at Shirley's exposé, calling it a story about Donald Trump's federal Medicare program. The problem: in the same breath, they bragged that Newsom imposed a moratorium on new hospice licenses in 2021 — which proves the state has direct oversight responsibility for the exact fraud Shirley documented. The rebuttal was a self-own. Shirley's critics also dug up a licensing report from 2021 to contradict his findings. Shirley checked the dates and responded simply: show your followers the 2023 and 2025 reports. Zero children enrolled. "Keep defending fraud and I'll keep exposing it." Yahoo News published what Larry suspects is a ChatGPT-generated hit piece, complete with m-dash philosophical flourishes and the signature "that's not just X — it's Y" construction. Even that article had to admit Shirley's core finding was real, that California's own state auditor flagged hospice fraud in 2022, and that the number of hospice agencies in LA County surged 1,500% since 2010. The fraud was documented. It was filed away. It took a 23-year-old in a hoodie to make it impossible to ignore.
