Kay Foye is an incredible Knifemaker whose direction focuses on the the voice and memories of the objects she uses to create her work. A lot of that direction comes from her experiences ranging from working in the New York fashion industry to being a ranch hand in Colorado. The evolution of her work like many artists is influenced by her surroundings as well as the people she talks to. Her process has led her to finding patrons who give her heirlooms and keepsakes for her to use in knife handles that appear to be a sculptural collage. Contrasting with the impermanence of carbon steel, or even a farriers rasp, these intricately built handles on give the feeling of preserved memories with the expectation of making new memories as the patina develops. I am running the New York City marathon after running it 12 years ago on the Michael J. Fox Foundation team. This Foundation is raising money for Parkinson's disease research. Steve Pellegrino passed away on February 27 from injuries in car accident on his way home from his shop. He was an awesome Bladesmith and a good friend. From embracing Perth's summer heat with 35°C+ training runs to experimenting with gear like blister prevention patches (Engo blister patches) and anti-chafing creams, Gabe is leaving no stone unturned.   Gabe shares how he's been testing his limits with split long runs and weekend endurance challenges, including a planned 24-hour run simulation. Joyce Kutty is an artist, musician, angler and knife maker out of Rhode Island. Growing up on the water with her family she spent time fishing with her family playing soccer, the violin and making art. In Koan 43 des Hekiganroku sagt ein Mönch zu Tôzan: »Kälte und Hitze überfallen uns. Wie können wir ihnen ausweichen?« Damit stellt er die grundlegende Frage, wie wir dem Unangenehmen ausweichen können. Auch der Buddha hat die Befreiung vom Leiden gelehrt. Trotzdem sind wir davon umzingelt. Engo antwortet: »Wenn du das durchdringen willst, musst du dich von den großen Meistern schmieden lassen.« Was allerdings mit einer gewissen Anstrengung verbunden ist. Analog der fünf Stände des Tôzan lernen wir zunächst, uns in Konzentration zu versenken und auf diese Weise in das Absolute (Sho) einzutauchen, das uns mit der Wesensgleichheit allen Lebens vertraut macht. In der Folge betrachten wir die äußeren Phänomene nicht länger als von uns getrennt. Aufgeladen mit dieser Energie entwickeln wir nach und nach das positive Samadhi einer vollständigen Handlung im Hier und Jetzt der Welt der Erscheinungen (Hen). Bis wir schließlich erkennen, dass Sho und Hen wie die beiden Seiten einer Münze untrennbar verbunden sind. Daran erinnern wir uns zunächst mit ein wenig Glück und später immer selbstverständlicher, wenn wir dem Unangenehmen in Hen begegnen. Es gibt kein Sho ohne die Welt der verschiedenartigen Erscheinungen und umgekehrt. Auch im Unangenehmen begegnet uns Sho. Eric Marcellin-Dibon is the Co-founder and CEO of MicroOLED, and Mark Prince is the General Manager for ENGO product line. MicroOLED is a company that develops high-performance OLED microdisplays for near-to-eye applications. Power efficiency and brightness are two areas where they excel, and the company is bringing that display technology to life through the ENGO Eyewear product line.Eric studied physics, optics, and electronics in grad school before working on visual systems for defense contractor Thales. He then went on to work at, what is today named Technicolor, but back then was Thomson, on imager technologies and strategic sourcing. The company MicroOLED grew out of the work at Thomson Technicolor.Mark spent the majority of his career in sales and marketing—initially in the ski industry, and then in technology and connected devices. Recent experiences include Head of Retail for Nokia Health, VP of Consumer Business for Withinings, and CEO of Qardio, a health monitoring technology company. Now he's the General Manager of the ENGO product line and the Chief Business Officer of MicroOLED.In this conversation, we discuss how MicroOLED competes against Sony as well as their initial focus for the ENGO product line. More generally, Eric talks about his perspective on what will enable AR glasses to achieve mass adoption.We go on to discuss the concept of “light AR”, the thinking behind the full-stack platform offered by MicroOLED called ActiveLook, and their go-to-market strategy.
