Episode #334 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Don Bulens, 5 time Startup CEO and Executive Chair at CloudZero. This episode was recorded live at Suffolk University which was so much fun! We recorded 3 interviews with Suffolk alums on April 2nd, so this is the first conversation and we'll have two more coming in the following weeks. And just a side note about Suffolk, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at the school. I was blown away by how many students attended the sessions and how many came up to me afterward with great questions. Back to this episode... Don has had lots of success throughout his career including being the CEO at EqualLogic which exited to Dell for $1.4B in cash, which was the largest cash transaction of its time for a venture backed company… but what I admire about Don is his transparency about his failures. His first two CEO positions didn't quite work out and he shares the details of this experience of getting knocked down and losing confidence, but how he got back at it and ultimately persevered. Today, Don is the Executive Chair at CloudZero, a venture backed cloud cost intelligence platform, which raised $41M last year in one of the most difficult markets to raise capital. Aimed directly at offsetting China's growing advantages in the Pacific, the ambitious program is set to deliver all within the next 18-24 months. Replicator is part of a growing concern that, as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Charles Q. Brown framed the issue while still Chief of the Air Force, the Pentagon must, "Accelerate, change or lose."But is the defense industry able to deliver on that promise? With new defense programs taking sometimes a decade or more to reach the battlefield, what is needed to transform the way the pentagon develops new technology? Can it keep up with the accelerating pace of change especially drones and AI? To answer these questions and more, host John Sorensen speaks with:Mike Brown who served as the Director of the Defense Innovation Unit at the Department of Defense. The U.S. services sector grew at a faster-than-expected rate in October boosted by strength in new orders. The Institute for Supply Management's index gauging the health of non-manufacturing industries registered 55.8, up from 54.8 in September.Citigroup Inc. (C) has forced out Chuck Prince as chairman and chief executive amid word the financial-services giant will write down as much as another $11 billion in bad mortgage assets. Robert Rubin, the former U.S. Treasury secretary and co-head of Goldman Sachs, will become chairman. Time Warner?s (TWX) Chief Executive Richard Parsons will step down and be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Bewkes. Bewkes, identified as the heir apparent since 2005, will take over the CEO job on January 1st. Parsons will remain as chairman.IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI), the Internet conglomerate run by media mogul Barry Diller, said it will break itself into five publicly-traded businesses. The Canadian dollar has risen over 20 per cent against the dollar so far this year. Analysts said the recent jobs data increased the chances that the Bank of Canada would leave interest rate on hold at 4.5 per cent in the coming months. And BNP Paribas chief currency strategist said the dollar may drop to $1.50 per euro by end of the year. The median estimate of 42 strategists is for the dollar to end the year at $1.43.
