Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve tackle Thomas Harris' opening salvo in his Hannibal Lecter series of books in the screen adaptation of the first book Red Dragon directed by the ineffable Michael Mann in the form of Manhunter from 1986 starring William Peterson, Dennis Farina, Tom Noonan and last but not least Bryan Cox as the first (and some would argue best) to portray Hannibal Lecter on screen. Join us as we discuss the many incarnations of the Hannibal Lecter story and mythology across print, TV and film and the various characters and varied actors who've played them, take a look back at now antiquated grocery products, outdated forensic techniques, and learn about region-locked DVDs and Blu-Rays for Steve's edification. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, go full Will Graham to get the scent back and go inside the mind of a killer before the next full moon in order to stave off another round of grisly slayings. Rob joins me to wrap up Succession (spoilers below). We both sort of predicted Tom's triumph, as did many other people. The ultimate lapdog ends up with the company, his marriage, and a pregnant wife. I bring up how Tom's career and personal life remind me of the male cuttlefish that disguises itself as a female, and therefore non-threatening, in order to find mating opportunities. There's an equivalent in humans among beta males, and in this case the strategy worked for Tom. While I had been expecting a feminist ending, we actually got the opposite. Shiv has lived her life in the shadow of one man, and went and married a guy who she thought she could walk all over, but he now has the upper hand in the relationship. I say that this is in part because she's now pregnant, but Rob argues that it's actually Tom who may be trapped by the baby. There's a lot here about gender dynamics and how pregnancy influences the balance of power between the sexes. I was so glad to see that we finally got an answer on Kendall's kids. As you may remember from previous discussions, this has been a constant obsession of mine, and the truth came out in the most satisfying way possible. Rob and I wonder the extent to which the Roy children were the authors of their own misery. People like to blame parents for how kids turn out, due to a bias toward blank slatism, but in the end Logan was right that they weren't serious people, and one can't just assume he made them that way. My suspicion is that he would've liked to find a suitable heir, but he simply didn't have one. Rob puts forth the possibility that perhaps, as Bryan Cox said, Logan's problem was that he loved his kids too much.We close by discussing Succession's legacy and how it compares to other classic shows. To me, it's really hard to do something this timely this well, and I suspect people will be watching this show generations from now for insights into our crazy political era — everything from violence in the streets, to disputed elections, right-wing populism, and what social media and the 24-hour news cycle have done to our brains. You can listen to the show here, or watch on YouTube.LinksRob's Substack essay on the finaleMe and Rob on Succession: S1-S3, S4:E1, S4: Ep 2-4, and S4: Ep 5-9On cuttlefishInterview with Bryan Cox Get full access to Richard Hanania's Newsletter at www.richardhanania.com/subscribe

Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Stanley Pritchett took his talents to an unexpected SEC school upon signing with the University of South Carolina. His decision paid off as he proved to be a dual-threat from the fullback position and ultimately became a member of Jimmy Johnson's first Dolphins draft class when Miami selected him in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Pritchett would go on to play four seasons in aqua and orange, many of them leading the way for Karim Abdul-Jabbar. In The Tank, “Pritch” explains why he chose the Gamecocks over his home-town Georgia Bulldogs (2:12) and surprises Juice and Seth by revealing he is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity (4:01). Stanley goes on to reflect upon his '96 draft class that featured the likes of Abdul-Jabbar, Zach Thomas, Daryl Gardener, Shawn Wooden, and others and recalls how challenging his first training camp was (6:03). He discusses his relationship with former ‘Fins fullback Keith Byars (13:24) as well as his nerves entering a Dan Marino huddle for the first time (17:12). To Seth's surprise, Pritch reveals he was unaware of several records he set in early games against two AFC East rivals (20:14), but vividly recalls his “welcome to the NFL” moment given to him by former Dolphins' enforcer turned Chicago Bear, Bryan Cox (28:56). After dissecting the pair of rookies, Boccacino and D’Amico speculate on how many defensive ends the Bills will keep, and who should make the roster, and who will find themselves on the outside looking in. It appears there are five “locks” to make the roster in Rousseau, Basham, A.J. Epenesa, Jerry Hughes, and Mario Addison, especially with general manager Brandon Beane committing to keeping Addison and the team not saving that much by releasing him. We also take a moment to celebrate the under-appreciated Hughes, who was No. 2 in the NFL in his pass rush win rate last year behind only Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt and who continues to be an invaluable contributor to the pass rush and a stout run defender. Assuming the Bills will keep either five or six defensive ends, that means one roster spot remains for: Darryl Johnson, Efe Obada, Bryan Cox. Jr., and Mike Love., and we make the case for who should earn that final spot. Miami Dolphins Tales From The DeepBorn and raised in East St. Louis, Ill., Bryan Cox attended Western Illinois University where he was named as a first-team All-America selection by the Football Gazette as a senior. Cox was drafted in the fifth round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and made an immediate impact, starting 13 games as a rookie and making a name for himself with his toughness and physical, aggressive style of play. In his second year, Cox recorded 14 sacks and earned the first of three Pro Bowl selections over the course of his five seasons in Miami, during which time he was a team leader and mentor to many of his teammates, ultimately being selected as one of the Top 50 players in franchise history. In The Tank, Bryan fondly recalls his hometown of East St. Louis, shares his deep admiration and respect for former Dolphins Head Coach Don Shula, and explains his departure from South Florida prior to the 1996 season. Bryan also recants his epic rivalry with the Buffalo Bills, candidly explains why he feels he should be a member of the team's Honor Roll, and takes an introspective look at his coaching career.

In 2002, Gore Verbinski made one of the prettiest remakes ever with the supernatural horror film The Ring. Originally a Japanese film based on a trilogy of novels by Koji Suzuki, The Ring featured legend Bryan Cox and Naomi Watts who was fresh off her first notable film, Mulholland Drive, solidifying her as a leading lady with some box office pull. In The Ring, journalist Rachel investigates the death of her niece and hears about a videotape that causes the death of anyone who watches it 7 days later. Harnessing the power of telemarketers, the videotape knows the phone number wherever you area and confirms your 7-day schedule, which is filled with visions, dreams, bloody noses, flies in/on television screens, and eventually, stretch face. This movie has two creepy kids and was made for a budget of $48M, and walked out with nearly $250M in the box office, and received some positive reviews along with plans for some shitty sequels. But does it hold up?  Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent watch the tape and then decide on whether they will try to save their own lives so they can praise this scary movie, or if they start counting the days to welcome a wet stretchy death from a creepy well girl.
