Episode 399 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Luisa Herrmann, Founder & CEO of AINovva. This episode was recorded live at Startup Boston Week at Suffolk University which is the third year that I've hosted it onsite. Thank you to Stephanie Roulic for the invitation as it's a lot of fun and great to be involved in such a meaningful conference. And, since it was hosted live, this episode is audio only and my apologies for the background noise. Entrepreneurs take different paths when it comes to finding ideas to start a business and how they go about funding it. Her company, AINovva was born out of her own need. After working in AI for several years and learning how to code, she built the product to solve her own content-switching exhaustion called AIFred. It handles email prioritization, meeting prep, and relationship management so busy professionals can focus on what matters. And to fund the company, she has bootstrapped it through consulting revenue. Not every company needs an outside investment and if it does, the longer an entrepreneur can hold out… the better situation they will be in when it comes to negotiating the terms. In this interview, we cover: * Advice on attending networking events. * Luisa's background story in terms of how she got involved in the tech industry and her journey into product management. * Her experience in product roles at ZoomInfo, Validity, and other startups. * All the details about AINOvva. * Advice for hiring your first Product Manager. * And so much more.

Thank you to Stephanie Roulic for the invitation, as it's a lot of fun and great to be involved in such a meaningful conference. And, since it was hosted live, this episode is audio only. In this interview, we start out discussing a topic that Izzat is uniquely qualified to cover that being the potential impact of AI on our cognitive brain function. AI is very powerful and it has so many amazing use cases, but what are the risks in terms of how it is being adopted for the human element? Will things like our desire to solve problems or leverage our creative abilities decline over time? Izzat has a background in brain and behavioral science from MIT and Yale, plus his company, Edifii, is an AI and Neuroscience-based mentor for students, counselors, and parents. It's definitely something to think about and I was excited to hear Izzat's point of view. In this interview, we also cover: * Izzat's background story and how he got his career starting in management consulting. * How he landed in Product management and his rise to a VP of Product Management role at Cambridge Mobile Telematics. * How he made the leap to entrepreneurship. * All the details about Ediffi and the impact its platform is making. * What makes a great Product Manager. * And so much more.

Editorial cartoonists Ted Rall (left-leaning firebrand) and Scott Stantis (right-wing straight shooter) ask why over half of Americans say democracy is on the ropes, unpack Zohran Mamdani's jaw-dropping poll surge in the NYC mayor's race, probe if social democratic vibes—like beefed-up welfare and worker protections—can actually work in the USA's cutthroat system. Plus, they dissect the bizarre Dallas ICE HQ shooting where the official story just doesn't add up, and break down chaos at Area 51 with shots popping off amid wild conspiracy buzz. Serious stakes, real talk, and that signature left-right sparring keeps it electric.  • Democracy in Distress: A Quinnipiac poll reveals 53% of Americans believe U.S. democracy isn't working, up sharply from earlier surveys, with 74% of Democrats echoing the gloom versus just 22% of Republicans. Amid rising political violence fears—71% call it a "very serious problem"—top voter worry is preserving democracy at 32%. Controversies swirl over partisan rifts and recent events like the Charlie Kirk assassination fueling national pessimism. • Mamdani's Poll Surge: Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani leads NYC mayoral polls by 20 points over Andrew Cuomo in a Suffolk University survey, with 45% support in Quinnipiac's four-way race. His edge stems from affordability (21% voter priority) and crime concerns, but critics slam his anti-Israel stance, NYPD critiques, and bold plans like free buses and rent freezes as too radical for the city.  • Social Democracy's U.S. Fit?: Experts debate if Nordic-style policies—universal healthcare, paid leave, active labor markets—can thrive in America's polarized landscape. Proponents argue flexicurity boosts work and equity; skeptics cite racial divides, weak unions, and GOP resistance as barriers. Recent pushes like Medicare for All highlight feasibility but face extremism and funding hurdles in a capitalist powerhouse.  • Dallas ICE Shooting Spin: A sniper fired on Dallas ICE HQ from a rooftop, killing two detainees and critically wounding one in a van; the gunman, Joshua Jahn, died by suicide, supposedly leaving "ANTI-ICE" ammo casings. DHS calls it targeted hate, but narrative gaps—like indiscriminate shots and Jahn's sparse politics—spark skepticism. • Area 51 Shots Fired: Guards at Nevada's secretive Area 51 base fired on a gunman blasting the gate in a brazen breach attempt, echoing 2019's viral "raid" memes. No injuries reported, but the incident reignites UFO conspiracies and security debates over the site's classified ops, from drone tests to alien lore, in a year of escalating U.S. mass shootings.Support the showThe DMZ America Podcast is recorded weekly by political cartoonists Ted Rall and Scott Stantis. Ok - this is so cool and a first… well, technically two firsts.  It's the first time I've had a sibling of a previous guest and to top it off… they are twins.   Liz's sister is Sue Graham Johnston, another successful executive in the tech industry.  She was one of my original guests as she appeared on Episode 24 when she was President of 128 Technology which was acquired by Juniper Networks. It was amazing to have the opportunity to interview Liz for a similar conversation. Liz's career started out in law and then expanded into operating roles at high growth companies like HubSpot, Wayfair, Notarize (now called Proof) and her most recent position was leading an early stage startup called Ada IQ, a consumer product development platform. In addition to Liz's professional career, she also shares some great advice around growing your career into executive leadership roles, how to be in the conversation for board seats, and more. As you will also learn is that Liz is involved in lots of ecosystem initiatives like being a board member at MassChallenge. She is currently involved in the launch of Women Applying AI or WAAI, a nonprofit organization that offers women a collaborative environment to learn AI, expand networks, and be ready for an AI future with hands-on, practical, and supportive in-person and online programming.  WAAI is officially launching on September 26th in Cambridge.

Paul is a serial entrepreneur and as you'll hear from our podcast, he is very successful but likes to fly under the radar. Case in point, while most companies can't wait to broadcast a round of funding, I couldn't find any press releases or media coverage about any outside investment for Parrot AI. Come to find out, the company raised capital in 2021 from Accomplice, Pillar, Legion Capital, and others. We discussed his reasoning as to why they decided against announcing funding which was very interesting. Parrot AI is not just a meeting recorder, transcription, and note-taking tool. It is an AI-powered collaborative workspace that turns conversation into results because of its understanding of the full context of a business. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * The 2 biggest lessons learned while building multiple companies. * Paul's background story and his work on building Barron's online property which was one of the first financial websites. * His professional journey as a Product Manager, including experience at Arbor Networks and how so many people have gone off to start other companies like Twilio. * The founding story of Confer which was one of the first endpoint security solutions in the cloud that was acquired by Carbon Black which later went public & was acquired by VMware. * His decision to pass on an opportunity to join a VC firm and continue down the entrepreneurial path. * All the details about Parrot AI and how it differentiates itself from competitors. * What makes a great Product Manager. * And so much more.

Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, in 2022, is attempting to delay a wrongful death lawsuit filed by O'Keefe's family until after her criminal trial. Read faces a second trial for second-degree murder and other charges in January, after her initial trial ended in a mistrial three months ago. According to documents filed by her attorneys, the civil suit should be postponed until the criminal case concludes to avoid compromising her Fifth Amendment rights. The wrongful death lawsuit also names Waterfall Bar & Grill and C.F. McCarthy's as defendants, alleging they continued to serve Read alcohol on the night of the incident, despite her visible intoxication. The lawsuit claims that Read backed her SUV into O'Keefe during a snowstorm and left him outside, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Read's criminal trial in July ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a verdict on a manslaughter charge but agreed to acquit her on charges of second-degree murder and leaving the scene. “My best guess right now is they will dispense with the first argument pretty quickly,” Suffolk University law professor Chris Dearborn commented on the upcoming appeal. “The second argument… is the one I think has a little more promise.” In the lead-up to the retrial, Read's legal team is set to argue before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in hopes of having two charges dismissed, including the second-degree murder charge. This appeal could have significant repercussions for the January trial date, especially if the court takes months to reach a decision. “I don't know if that is fair to either side,” Dearborn said, noting the challenges of preparing for trial amid ongoing legal uncertainties. Meanwhile, the decision to bring in special prosecutor Hank Brennan, who previously represented mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, has sparked interest. Brennan's involvement is seen by some, including Dearborn, as an effort to underscore the prosecution's commitment to a rigorous and ethical handling of the case. “I think this is the DA Morrissey trying to send a message to everybody that we don't want anyone to think there is anything going on here that is untoward or not ethical,” Dearborn explained. With these pending legal battles, both criminal and civil, and heightened media scrutiny, the case continues to captivate Massachusetts and beyond, as Read faces another showdown in court on January 27. Hey there! Send us a message. Who else should we be talking to? What topics are important? Use FanMail to connect! Let us know!Season 6 - Episode 138Ever wondered how academic research can transform real-world policing? Join me as I reconnect with Brenda Bond-Fortier, a professor at Suffolk University in Boston, who shares her journey from the Lowell Police Department to academia. Brenda's passion for bridging the gap between research and practice shines through as she recounts her career under Ed Davis, her innovative role as Director of Research and Development, and her current work with 21CP Solutions. Discover how Brenda's unique insights are helping police departments across the nation implement research-driven strategies for organizational improvement.Explore the critical role that diverse perspectives play in both healthcare and policing. Brenda and I discuss the transformative power of bringing in external experts to combat insularity and introduce fresh viewpoints. Drawing parallels with healthcare responses to crises like the pandemic and the opioid epidemic, we highlight the benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach in addressing complex social issues. In policing, this means rethinking who should be at the decision-making table to ensure comprehensive solutions, particularly for mental health and social challenges.Leadership in policing isn't just about managing internal issues but innovation and reform. Brenda and I delve into the complexities police leaders face, such as balancing internal challenges with external expectations. We illustrate how unconventional approaches can lead to significant changes by sharing real-world examples like offender reentry initiatives. We also explore the potential of applying the SARA model beyond crime fighting to foster continuous improvement and capacity building within police departments. Tune in for a hopeful outlook on the positive changes in police organizations and the vital importance of meeting evolving public expectations.Read Brenda's book:Organizational Change in an Urban Police Department: Innovating to Reform, 1st Edition, Routledge (2020)Find on Amazon at the link below:https://www.amazon.com/Building-Adaptive-Police-Organization-Relationships/dp/1138190209/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3D9YGK2E8HXUI&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ODsrKHt4KvRW8-_1Bw3lh0jraY0HGqXVI1dk9XgLFYU.cMVtIHissXHfP_J4Ox3UQ_txQdITxIR2QdRbyYjiD0Y&dib_tag=se&keywords=organizational+change+brenda+bond&qid=1725192885&s=books&sprefix=orgnaizational+change+brenda+bond%2Cstripbooks%2C89&sr=1-1Contact us: copdoc.podcast@gmail.com Website: www.copdocpodcast.comIf you'd like to arrange for facilitated training, or consulting, or talk about steps you might take to improve your leadership and help in your quest for promotion, contact Steve at stephen.morreale@gmail.com
