#62 Sammy the Afghan Camera Lady   Erik and Andrew are joined by the force of nature known as the Afghan Camera Lady for an enjoyable natter.   Sammy has a background in commercial photography but with the help of her local analogue photography group Leicester LoFi became obsessed with the Afghan box camera.   Currently Sammy takes her huge “portable darkroom and studio” camera to festivals and weddings to make unique “instant” portraits.   Bursting with enthusiasm and ideas for how she might develop her work Sammy made our life easy for this recording.     Things we chatted about on the show:   When Sammy lived in Leicester she discovered they had an Afghan Box Camera and decided there and then that “it was a camera to match her personality”. www.leicesterlofi.co.uk   For all things related to these wonderful cameras you should look at the Afghan Box Camera Project Website.   This project was initiated early in 2011 by Austrian artist Lukas Birk and Irish ethnographer Sean Foley. The aim of the project from the outset was to create an urgent record of the disappearing art of Afghan box camera photography and make that information freely available online for all. Funding for the project in 2011 as in 2012 came primarily via crowdfunding on the KICKSTARTER website. The Visual Anthropology Dept. at Goldsmiths University, London has also contributed funding. Afghan Box Camera Project   The discussion turned at some point to the “6 degrees of separation” that led to Erik being a co-host on the show so we ended up talking about the work of former guests Wayne Martin Belger and Jenny Sampson. Today we get to catch up with Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl. I hadn't spoken to Ethan since November 2019 but always followed his work. When he was running a recent project I couldn't help but be interested. Ethan has been playing with "afghan" cameras as they call them, huge 20x24 bits of technology. Not only that but he's been using the ra4 process to make his own version of instant positive prints! Ethan's personality always shines through, a man who can't stop playing and inventing. Ethan Moses – purveyor of 3D printed cameras at Cameradactyl – spent the last few weeks in NYC teaching a color reversal printing process using a self-designed and built 20"x24" large format camera. And Vision Slightly Blurred co-host Allen Murabayashi has the prints to prove it. It's a magical process that uses standard RA4 photographic paper and some chemical wizardry to produce a negative-less, one-of-a-kind print. Also in the show: The New York Times names staff photographer Josh Haner as its Photo Futurist, and Fujifilm releases a wireless Instax Wide printer.

Andre is a film enthusiast, there is no getting over that. Those that have followed his progress over the years were overjoyed when he landed a job working with CineStill, couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.   But the burning question, the elephant in the room if you will, is will he stick with this new found love and dare I say it, obsession, that is large format photography?   This obsession so far has brought two LF cameras and a lovely Omega 4x5 enlarger, is he another Simon Forster, Andrew wonders, loves all the gear but we don’t see many images?   Is Andrew being cruel, or realistic or, just maybe we are seeing a new Andre?   If this show was anything to go by then he’s off to a great start and so far shows no sign of selling all his gear but time will tell.   We gathered together a rogues gallery of former guests and others who just wanted to be a part of this recording which has also been committed to video for posterity. This will be available on out You Tube channel as soon as the file makes its way by pigeon carrier to Simon from our video engineer colleague Jimmy Hickford.     Things we chatted about on the show:   At the start of the show we chatted about 4x5 colour and Andrew’s issues with scanning. The solutions all seemed complicated so he will stick to colour at 120 size.   Andre kind of announced that Cinestill film would be available in 4x5 sheets and also Eastman 5222 stock – this is super exciting.   The internet was all giddy over Steve Lloyd showing his beta version of an electronic shutter for barrel lenses – this will likely be a KickStarter so follow along on one of Steve’s social sites (links below).   Andre came armed with some questions and we all attempted to answer him, it was fun, but don’t take my word for it.   Question 1 – Does (loupe) size matter? Are certain ones better than others.   Andrew suggested 4x or 6x max but wasn’t sure why, Jason Lane said if they are too powerful then the ground glass image starts interfering with the focused image. Here is a picture of the one Andrew has but normally he just takes his specs off due to being very short sighted!     Question 2 – Fresnel lenses….do they help and where should you place them? A mixed response from our room of experts (definition as ex is a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure), but if you are going to use one buy one with a focal length in the same range as the lenses you are going to use. Probably aim for 150mm as that is likely to be in the mid range of what you are using. Jason Lane said place it on the photographer’s side of the ground glass with the lens rings facing toward the lens , so smooth side to the photographer. Ethan Moses was very dismissive of them but Steve Lloyd kinda wasn’t (fight). If you buy a cheap one of the net then you may be lucky or not – oh they also DON’T MAKE THE IMAGE BRIGHTER (that’s Ethan shouting at Andrew by the way).   Question 3 – Is it bad to leave your shutter cocked or your thick Grafmatic film holder in the spring back?   Consensus here was short term say on a day trip all is good but if you are looking to maybe store those lenses or camera for a while then trip the shutter and remove the back.   Question 4 – How do you store your film holders to prevent the darkslides coming out?   Most (apart from Ethan who has photographer’s jeans) use zip lock bags. Even if those little rotating right angle darkslide retainer thingies are missing the friction of the darkslide in the holder will be enough to keep them in place, coupled with the zip lock bag.   Andrew has a 5 holder cascade holder from Dan Stone – his products are really well made but not the cheapest  https://www.stonephotogear.com/filmstorage   Question 5 – Where do you put unprocessed film before it gets developed? Do you leave them in the holders or transfer them to a box?   Most use old 4x5 film boxes. The advantage is that you can segregate the exposed films according to how you wish to develop them e.g a wide subject brightness range >5 or 6 stops maybe then reduce development by 20% or so according to your set up.   Someone suggested a pack of black bags like the once that sheet film come in – either B&H or Freestyle maybe?   Andrew and Dave Shrimpton tend to take out enough film holders to suit the development tank then process straight away – so 6 sheets typically.   Question 6 – Can you split grade print contact prints? In short – yes. You can use under the lens filters or dial in settings to your colour head if you have one. The filter drawer in Andre’s Omega may get a bit toasty so possibly don’t use that.   Question 7 – Do you use filters? 10 stop grad? Is fo how do you attach them? 10 stopper maybe not – use slow film and f45 – get a 2-3 stop ND if necessary.   Andrew uses Cokin P rings, filters and holders and Greg uses a GELSNAP holder from LEE Filters which seems to be out of stock everywhere. https://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera-directory/camera-dir-list/category/gelsnap-filter-holder   And finally……   Question 8 – What brands of floppy hat do you all recommend.   Tilly T3 is the one https://www.tilley.com/uk_en/t3-wanderer-hat.html       Andre’s links   You can see pictures of his watches (his last craze) here. https://www.instagram.com/andre.on.film/?hl=en   He occasionally stays awake during a recording of Neg Pos Podcast – they have a great FB group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2008988399314590   And here is CineStill who Andre works for. https://cinestillfilm.com/products/800tungsten-c41-36exp-35mm-high-speed-color-negative-135     Rogues gallery links   Ethan Moses https://www.cameradactyl.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/2282531432013144/   Greg Obst http://greggobst.com/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/greggobst   Jimmy Hickford https://twitter.com/jimmyshootsfilm?lang=en https://www.instagram.com/jimmyshootsfilm/?hl=en   John Money https://www.instagram.com/johntmoney/?hl=en   Joseph Brunjes https://www.josephbrunjes.com/index https://www.flickr.com/photos/24021575@N02   Nick Lyle https://www.flickr.com/photos/51834204@N07/ https://www.instagram.com/avynick/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/groups/2282531432013144/   Steve Lloyd http://chroma.camera/ https://www.instagram.com/chromacamera/   Phew     Other News The inaugural LFPP Gathering in the forest 2020 was cancelled but you can catch up with the virtual meeting we had recently where we were honoured to have Dave Shrimpton and Kate Miller-Wilson present their work and ideas to over 20 of us on line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQQtnpFib8s&t=113s   And….   Much to Simon’s dismay the Six Towns Darkroom remains in lock down for the time being….but there is a plan to get restarted.   LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.imstagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper

It's so nice to interview from the different areas of the photography world and this one is definitely that! I remember Ethan launching the Kickstarter project for Cameradactyl back in 2018 and thought wow, how colourful is that, such a different approach. Ethan has done a cracking job with the camera and launched all manner of accessories for cameras (not just his large-format model). He has now ventured into making a handheld 4x5 which is a great concept. Now I know not everyone is going to be thrilled about the products he makes or the choice of materials. But this is 2019, there are not many options unless you have unlimited funds and some accessories he makes are only available second hand, as they relate to cameras from the 70+80's. What's amazing about Ethan is that he has a business mind, an engineers mind and also a photographers eye, so it was quite easy to go between business and building in the same sentence. In this one we discuss: DIY at 10 years old Home depot camera build challenge Touring/selling in 50 states Making 4x5/6x9 camera’s Business decisions Making custom ideas Youtube + monetising Scaling manufacturing opensx70 project Custom build/prints Problems with home production Building a mini-lab film processor Random questions Ethan easily answers our strange questions that involve: - which mythical creature lives In Africa - Eddie the Eagle! - $1 million button - Morning glory flowers - Ideal presents for 90-year-old's Extra content Anyone visiting the website will be able to view photographs of his products. Ethan Moses of Cameradactyl and Butter Grips fame (http://www.cameradactyl.com) officially joins the team as our third wheel (3rd lens?). We get his history and interests and he entertains us with stories of crossing the country looking for Photographer's Jeans and buying them wherever he can.  They also talk about camera sizes (turns out smaller is better for Graham while bigger is better for Nick and Ethan likes anything smaller than 1.6 Kiev 60s).  Future plans are discussed and Heather Oelklaus and her new work is brought up (http://www.camerakarma.com/#!/HOME).  Graham reveals his pinhole camera-building spree. The Canamorph is the interesting one (https://www.instagram.com/p/B0L-piiHfJ7/). Nick talks about a wheelbarrow and not going to his local county fair.  Ethan brings up the possibilities of printing distortion-free singlets (how is that NOT a band name?) like this thing: (https://transferencia.tec.mx/en/2019/02/21/eureka-they-find-the-formula-to-solve-an-old-optical-problem/) If you're still with us at the end (which is THE recommended course of action), you can hear our theme music. In this episode, Nick and Graham welcome back Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl to talk about his new camera, the Homunculus (don't worry, we talk about why it has that name). This camera actually got its start on a previous episode of the podcast where Nick pestered Ethan to develop a camera based on Mamiya Press lenses and a 2X3 Graflok back (same as the RB67 back). Well, this is the result. Most of the show directly relates to that subject but they also talk a bit about travel photography (Graham is just back from a 2-week vacation in North Carolina), a new 135 panoramic camera Ethan is working on for a friend of his and traipsing through the New England winter on a motorcycle and sidecar.  Graham talks about Ball Photo in Asheville (http://www.ballphotosupply.com/index.html  Seriously, they're way better than their website). Go there. Make a pilgrimage.  Also of note: We're using a new system for recording shows. It is a bit rougher than what we were using before but it reduces a 4-5 hour editing job down to 1 hour. Bear with us, please.

On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome four “makers” who have designed and built impressive imaging tools with their own vision. Their locations, the formats, the materials, and the final products all differ wildly, but the D.I.Y. spirit of the engineer, the tinkerer, the photographer, and the entrepreneur are shared by our four guests. We get a sense of how each came to their product, developed it, and are trying to market it. First, we speak with Sam Cornwell, inventor of The Solarcan, a unique camera designed to produce “extreme time exposures” that capture the sun’s path across the sky; and yes, it is a can.  Cornwell offers his love of photography, astronomy and repurposing household objects as the seeds for this pinhole camera, which comes with its own piece of Ilford 5 x 7" photo paper already inside. After a successful Kickstarter campaign and a lot of work, his fully packaged invention is available for purchase from B&H.     Next, we are joined by Steve Lloyd of Chroma Cameras, who liked large format field cameras so much he went and designed one of his own. His are the first field cameras made of laser-cut acrylic. Appropriately available in a choice of unconventional colors, Chroma cameras feature interchangeable film backs that attach to the camera using magnets, which make it possible to switch quickly between 4 x 5" film to roll-film backs.   After a short break, Filippo Nishino, of the Swiss company I’m Back, discusses the invention created by his partner, Samuel Mello Medieros, which can capture digital images with a 35mm film camera body. Available in a universal model or numerous customized covers, the back attaches physically to your film camera, enabling high-res digital image capture. After many years in development, the I’m Back is available to the public and on sale at B&H.     Our final guest is Ethan Moses, of Cameradactyl, which is his company and his passion. Cameradactyl, along with its “subsidiary,” Butter Grip, makes 3D printed cameras, parts, and accessories, including his incredible CAMERADACTYL 4 x 5 Field Camera and X-Pin 35mm Pinhole Camera Kit. He also sells a wide range of practical and colorful grips and camera accessories, and might make something for your needs, if you ask nicely enough.      Guests: Sam Cornwell, Steve Lloyd, Filippo Nishino, and Ethan Moses Photograph: Courtesy of Chroma Camera

E22 Industrial Design Show Notes Nick and Graham again welcome Ethan Moses of Cameradactyl and Butter Grip (https://www.cameradactyl.com/) to discuss Industrial Design and the elements of a camera that make it “work” for the user. The meat of the discussion starts after the first musical interstitial (7:45) with an overlong monolog from Graham. Happily, Nick and Ethan rescue him with insight and mockery. The Konica Autoreflex TC, a camera that has been noted as a camera that is not good for left-eye-dominant individuals but somehow works for people with larger noses. Somehow, Vera Wang works her way into the design. The Volkswagen campaign from the 90s, Fahrvergnugen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CESVgaeD-nI) works its way into the discussion as well. The concept of the left-side shutter release is discussed (21:55) in a way of attempting to break the right-hand dominant design from running the world for lefties. Graham brings up Prime Suspect Tenneson (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/shows/prime-suspect-tennison/) and their photographic gaff (39:45) and how the knowledge base of how to design film cameras in the digital age is leaving the population. The concept of the Material Is The Message is talked about (51:30) along with the surfaces of cameras like leather, plastic, rubber, etc. Nick brings up the concept of the authenticity of materials.  Sometimes a lack of leatherette is better than the original covering. The durability of materials and planed lives of cameras designed today is considered (1:05:00). The appropriateness of materials and form are discussed at 1:09:45 and the concept of the machine looking like other machines in the category is important for consumers to recognize what the purpose of the machine is. All three hosts jump on the Coal-Rolling Idiots of America  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gcb84qn3mU) (1:14:00). If you happen to be one of them, please accept our apologies for denigrating your self-worth. Witness the birth of a camera (1:42:00) as Nick and Ethan hash out a design for a camera that takes an existing lens-shutter system and then schedule the development. Graham talks about micro drills (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0195V3J98/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (1:58:00). Nick tries to talk him down from his issue with materials by suggesting a variety of solutions for different usages. Sometimes it’s better to think of a design as a series of elements that gets built up into a whole instead of a single element that is constructed for the single purpose (25:45). Ethan Moses has come out with a new 4X5 hand camera, the Cameradactyl OG (cameradactyl.com) and Graham and Nick each have one from the first batch and they talk about its structure and materials (28:15) as well as how to extend its usefulness and functionality. Graham comes up with the absolute worst idea for making an optical lens (31:15) while Nick talks about more difficult methods that might actually work.  One of the battles we have to fight as designers of cameras is keeping the film flat against the film gate. To help with that, Graham proposes reducing the area of the image size (49:00). Nick brings up the concept of making mini bellows focusing mechanisms (58:00) as a method of saving weight through the elimination of the helical. The Cameradactyl OG is discussed in length again (1:00:00). Please excuse the rustling in the background as both of the hosts have their cameras in-hand during this time. Graham harkens back to the Starship Enterprise for inspiration for a light-shading device for viewing the ground glass even though Nick doesn’t want to think about it. Just like a cuckoo bird laying an egg in another bird’s nest, Nick and Graham discuss an interview conducted on the Classic Lenses Podcast (https://classiclensespodcast.podbean.com/) with Raffaello Pondri of the PONF camera (ponfcamera.com) project (1:24:30). The PONF camera is a design that features swappable film and digital backs on a 35mm camera. It is well worth a direct listen instead of relying on the shaky memories of Nick and Graham. The manufacturing process would use a metal 3D printing system like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igq8gQuXfR4. One of the most interesting of the concepts that came up in the discussion of the PONF camera is the use of an LCD shutter (1:42:15). They are plentiful and cheap but that doesn’t mean they are right for film photography. They move on to what they’ve been working on lately (1:51:00), including the adapting of lenses, more about lumen boxes and issues with Graham’s 3D printer. Graham incorrectly identifies the supplier of lenses as Surplus Shack while it is Surplus Shed (surplussed.com). Shout out to Matt Melcher of the Box of Cameras podcast and poster on Flickr (mattmelcher) and Instagram (@mattmelcher and @box_of_cameras). Graham has some cameras for sale on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/FrozenPhotonCameraCo) and thinks everyone should own one of them.
