CineStill has sold motion picture film and analog photography equipment to still photographers for over a decade, including the company's popular CineStill 800T high-speed color film. The company now finds itself embroiled in a major controversy within the analog community, and the situation has devolved into allegations of intimidation and harassment. The whole story behind CineStill's current situation is a bit of a long one, but it's worth reading. While we of course recommend reading PetaPixel's coverage, another excellent story worth your time can be read over at 404Media. Photos and more here: allthroughalens.com On this episode of Dev Party we develop some film and answer some questions submitted by listeners. Vania (@surfmartian on IG) developed Cinestill 800 in C-41 chemistry. While Eric (@conspiracy.of.cartographers on IG) developed Kentmere 100 in 510-Pyro. We covered questions about how to shoot Fomapan (really, how to develop it), what to do with 120 spools, and find out whether a cap of vinegar is acidic enough to turn 500ml of water into a usable stop bath. Here are Vania's pics: And here are Eric's - He's comparing Fomapan 100 to Kentmere 100, both shot at the same time with the same camera and same settings. And both devved in 510-Pyro, 1+100 for 7mins and 11.75mins respectively. Foma is on the left and Kentmere is on the right. PATREON Thank you to everyone who supports us! Here are her shots: Meanwhile, Eric revisited a couple of places that he had shot before. When he first shot these spots, he used a Holga with some sort of expired Fuji slide film xpro'd in C-41 a decade ago. Ten years later, he returned with a Graflex and Fomapan 100 devved in FA-1027. In this episode, we're talking all things medium format while poking a little fun at the widespread misinterpretation of 120 film as "120mm film." We're tackling everything from cameras to negative sizes and even lenses aimed at the popular format that has been around for over 100 years now and isn't going away anytime soon. Especially with Kodak Gold 200 in 120 format and CineStill trying to bring back 220 film! In full disclosure, 120mm film did exist, but it's more closely tied to a large format as 120mm is 12cm which is about 4.5 inches. Surprisingly some films have the 120mm measurement; there are 1898's 113 (90×120mm) and 114 (120x90mm) formats. If you're already seeing something and that these roll films are all numerical formats, with the first roll film released in 1881 being 101, going all the way to 119, which means that 120 film were first released in 1901 following the sequence already laid out.

There are no bad batches here, the gang sits down for a lively discussion about rebranding. Let's face it, the idea of rebranding items especially in photography is nothing new. Kodak, Fuji, and Agfa have all sold their films to resellers even putting them in custom cartridges and boxes. Even some camera manufacturers are known to build more cameras for other companies and sell under those names than under their own name. And today the trend continues, with Agfa still making films but as a contract manufacturer with names like Rollei under Maco Direct selling their product, or Fomapan producing films stocks for Kosmo Foto, New Classics, and Lomography. Plus ORWO provides the sweet motion picture film for Lomography and our friends at Cinestill and their use of Kodak Vision3 and Double-X stocks. And being able to get these in medium format! So the team sits down at the table for a lively and sometimes hard to follow the discussion about rebranding and clone products.
On this impromptu episode of Dev Party, we're going commercial! Okay, not really, but we *are* using Eric's ECN-2 kit to develop Kodak Motion Picture film in 120! Now, this isn't Cinestill – this is the raw stuff, complete with Remjet coating! Remjet is a thin carbon coating on the non-emulsion side of motion picture film. It serves as a sort of dry lubrication (as the film speeds through the movie cameras) and provides some sort of anti-halation services (this is disputed, but whatever). We first tell you how to mix the kit, which is super simple. And then we tell you two ways to remove Remjet: Baking Soda water and elbow grease. Eric's kits are available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/781436189/ecn-2-color-film-developing-kit Vania shot Kodak Vision 3 500T in a Mamiya RB67, and here are her beautiful results: Meanwhile, Eric developed two rolls shot in Vania's Hasselblad 500C. He wasn't trilled with the results, but hasn't used the camera enough to feel any sort of comfort with it. Here are a few he liked: PATREON Thank you to everyone who supports us! Andre is a film enthusiast, there is no getting over that. Those that have followed his progress over the years were overjoyed when he landed a job working with CineStill, couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. But the burning question, the elephant in the room if you will, is will he stick with this new found love and dare I say it, obsession, that is large format photography? This obsession so far has brought two LF cameras and a lovely Omega 4x5 enlarger, is he another Simon Forster, Andrew wonders, loves all the gear but we don’t see many images? Is Andrew being cruel, or realistic or, just maybe we are seeing a new Andre? If this show was anything to go by then he’s off to a great start and so far shows no sign of selling all his gear but time will tell. We gathered together a rogues gallery of former guests and others who just wanted to be a part of this recording which has also been committed to video for posterity. This will be available on out You Tube channel as soon as the file makes its way by pigeon carrier to Simon from our video engineer colleague Jimmy Hickford. Things we chatted about on the show: At the start of the show we chatted about 4x5 colour and Andrew’s issues with scanning. The solutions all seemed complicated so he will stick to colour at 120 size. Andre kind of announced that Cinestill film would be available in 4x5 sheets and also Eastman 5222 stock – this is super exciting. The internet was all giddy over Steve Lloyd showing his beta version of an electronic shutter for barrel lenses – this will likely be a KickStarter so follow along on one of Steve’s social sites (links below). Andre came armed with some questions and we all attempted to answer him, it was fun, but don’t take my word for it. Question 1 – Does (loupe) size matter? Are certain ones better than others. Andrew suggested 4x or 6x max but wasn’t sure why, Jason Lane said if they are too powerful then the ground glass image starts interfering with the focused image. Here is a picture of the one Andrew has but normally he just takes his specs off due to being very short sighted! Question 2 – Fresnel lenses….do they help and where should you place them? A mixed response from our room of experts (definition as ex is a has been and a spurt is a drip under pressure), but if you are going to use one buy one with a focal length in the same range as the lenses you are going to use. Probably aim for 150mm as that is likely to be in the mid range of what you are using. Jason Lane said place it on the photographer’s side of the ground glass with the lens rings facing toward the lens , so smooth side to the photographer. Ethan Moses was very dismissive of them but Steve Lloyd kinda wasn’t (fight). If you buy a cheap one of the net then you may be lucky or not – oh they also DON’T MAKE THE IMAGE BRIGHTER (that’s Ethan shouting at Andrew by the way). Question 3 – Is it bad to leave your shutter cocked or your thick Grafmatic film holder in the spring back? Consensus here was short term say on a day trip all is good but if you are looking to maybe store those lenses or camera for a while then trip the shutter and remove the back. Question 4 – How do you store your film holders to prevent the darkslides coming out? Most (apart from Ethan who has photographer’s jeans) use zip lock bags. Even if those little rotating right angle darkslide retainer thingies are missing the friction of the darkslide in the holder will be enough to keep them in place, coupled with the zip lock bag. Andrew has a 5 holder cascade holder from Dan Stone – his products are really well made but not the cheapest https://www.stonephotogear.com/filmstorage Question 5 – Where do you put unprocessed film before it gets developed? Do you leave them in the holders or transfer them to a box? Most use old 4x5 film boxes. The advantage is that you can segregate the exposed films according to how you wish to develop them e.g a wide subject brightness range >5 or 6 stops maybe then reduce development by 20% or so according to your set up. Someone suggested a pack of black bags like the once that sheet film come in – either B&H or Freestyle maybe? Andrew and Dave Shrimpton tend to take out enough film holders to suit the development tank then process straight away – so 6 sheets typically. Question 6 – Can you split grade print contact prints? In short – yes. You can use under the lens filters or dial in settings to your colour head if you have one. The filter drawer in Andre’s Omega may get a bit toasty so possibly don’t use that. Question 7 – Do you use filters? 10 stop grad? Is fo how do you attach them? 10 stopper maybe not – use slow film and f45 – get a 2-3 stop ND if necessary. Andrew uses Cokin P rings, filters and holders and Greg uses a GELSNAP holder from LEE Filters which seems to be out of stock everywhere. https://www.leefilters.com/index.php/camera-directory/camera-dir-list/category/gelsnap-filter-holder And finally…… Question 8 – What brands of floppy hat do you all recommend. Tilly T3 is the one https://www.tilley.com/uk_en/t3-wanderer-hat.html Andre’s links You can see pictures of his watches (his last craze) here. https://www.instagram.com/andre.on.film/?hl=en He occasionally stays awake during a recording of Neg Pos Podcast – they have a great FB group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2008988399314590 And here is CineStill who Andre works for. https://cinestillfilm.com/products/800tungsten-c41-36exp-35mm-high-speed-color-negative-135 Rogues gallery links Ethan Moses https://www.cameradactyl.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/2282531432013144/ Greg Obst http://greggobst.com/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/greggobst Jimmy Hickford https://twitter.com/jimmyshootsfilm?lang=en https://www.instagram.com/jimmyshootsfilm/?hl=en John Money https://www.instagram.com/johntmoney/?hl=en Joseph Brunjes https://www.josephbrunjes.com/index https://www.flickr.com/photos/24021575@N02 Nick Lyle https://www.flickr.com/photos/51834204@N07/ https://www.instagram.com/avynick/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/groups/2282531432013144/ Steve Lloyd http://chroma.camera/ https://www.instagram.com/chromacamera/ Phew Other News The inaugural LFPP Gathering in the forest 2020 was cancelled but you can catch up with the virtual meeting we had recently where we were honoured to have Dave Shrimpton and Kate Miller-Wilson present their work and ideas to over 20 of us on line. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQQtnpFib8s&t=113s And…. Finally, talk about alternative shutters, youtube possibilities, and Holga masks.
While shooting their own photography work, Brian and Brandon Wright discovered that they loved the look that motion picture film offered and set off to be able to get that look in their still photography. So, since they had figured out how to hand roll 35 mm motion picture film into normal 35mm still film cassettes, they started shooting with it. But developing it, became tricky. They joined us in the studio to talk about why it was challenging and what they did to not only find a solution but to also make it accessible to the rest of the world. www.cinestill.com www.instagram.com/cinestillfilm
