This week we wrap up Fantasy February and our look at pulp heroes with a look at a film that has it's roots in (and centers around) pulpy romance fiction novels. From 1984, Romancing The Stone. Kathleen Turner plays Joan Wilder, a meek and mousy romance novelist, who receives a treasure map in the mail from her recently murdered brother-in-law. At the same time, her sister Elaine is kidnapped in Colombia and the two criminals responsible, demand that she travel to Colombia to exchange the map for her sister. Joan does, but she quickly becomes lost in the jungle after being waylaid by Zolo, a corrupt Colombian cop who will stop at nothing to obtain the map for himself. While there, she meets, and is helped by, an irreverent, laid-back adventurer of sorts, named Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) who agrees (for a price) to bring her back to civilization. Together, they embark upon an adventure that could be straight out of one of Joan's pulpy romance novels!
This week, as we continue our look at pulp-heroes as part of our annual "Fantasy February", we're taking a look at the pulp hero who arguably started it all. The character who influenced everyone from Superman to The Shadow. This week we're looking at Doc Savage! More to the point, we're looking at the 1975 movie, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze! In the film, which takes in the 1930's, Doc Savage (played by Ron Ely) and his five adventuring companions are drawn into the mystery of Doc's father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc's father's death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold.
This week's episode continues our month-long look at pulp heroes for "Fantasy February". From the pulp pages of the cult comic flies The Rocketeer! This 1991 film recreates 1930's Hollywood, complete with gangsters, Nazi spies, and the growth of the Age of Aviation. Young, hotshot pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) stumbles upon a top secret rocket-pack created by Howard Hughes and with the help of his mechanic/mentor, Peevy (Alan Arkin), he now attempts to save his girlfriend Jenny (Jennifer Connolly) and stop the Nazis as The Rocketeer!
Fantasy February is once again upon us and, this year we thought it would be fun to take a look at pulp heroes in a sort of urban-fantasy setting. So, to kick things off, we take a look at 1994's The Shadow. Starring Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Tim Curry, Ian McKellan, Johnathan Winters and Penelope Ann Miller the film, set in 1930s New York City, finds The Shadow (Alec Baldwin) as he battles his nemesis, Shiwan Khan (John Lone), who is building an atomic bomb. Listen in and find out what we thought!
Welcome back to another exciting episode of The Xbox Drive. Well, we hope it's exciting. Of course, we write these descriptions before the episode airs with just a faint idea of what we'll actually talk about. I mean, if we knew exactly what was going to happen on the show, why do it at all ya know? Seriously though, Tokyo Game Show was awesome and Assassin's Creed just got delayed to February 2025 sooooo yeah. Shortest Month. Biggest Games. Let's talk about it. ★ LINKS ★ ► Support Carpool Gaming on Patreon: https://patreon.com/carpoolgaming ► Join our amazing Discord community: https://discord.com/invite/WR3qcXJq9n ► Get your Carpool Gaming merch: https://carpoolgaming.com/ ► Check us out on Twitch: https://twitch.tv/carpoolgaminglive ► Subscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/carpoolgaming ► Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/carpoolgaming Thanks so much to everyone who supports us on https://patreon.com/carpoolgaming ★ ULTIMATE PRODUCERS ★ Johnathan Brown: https://linktr.ee/pme.jib Cwagmire, who reminds you that the best babes are Xenobabes. Army Of Darkness, Medieval Dead, Evil Dead III, whatever you call it, it's still an amazing wrap-up to our Fantasy February series and Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. A mash-up of horror, slap-stick comedy and medieval mayhem, this film finds our hero, Ash William (perfectly played by the incomparable Bruce Campbell) transported to the past (the year 1300 to be exact) where he is determined to be the "chosen one" who can deliver Arthur and his people from an army of Deadites while all he wants is to find his way back home!
Fantasy February comes to a close with the 1982 classic, The Dark Crystal. Eric Neil and David talk about the influence of Jim Henson on a generation, and how kids entertainment of that era wasn't afraid to be a little scary. Bring your life essence and join us!
In this episode, we're brining you the latest in our Fantasy February series...this week is a special week for, not only are we looking at a classic mythological movie with fantastic stop-motion FX by Ray Harryhausen, we're pitting it agains it's 2010 CGI remake! It's our latest in our VS series as well, as we bring you The Clash of The Clash OF The Titans!!!
Fantasy February continues with the sword and sorcery epic from 1981, Excalibur. The movie where everyone yells at each other and there butt crack aplenty. Pull the sword from the stone and join us!
Fantasy February continues as, this week, we take a look at the 1988 film Willow. Directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas and based on his story, it tells the tale of Willow who, after his family finds an abandoned baby, he is charged with bringing her back to her people. Along the way, he discovers that the child is the chosen one who is destined by birth to bring an end to the evil queen Bavmorda's reign! Find out what we all thought of the film and it's sequel series on Disney+!
Fantasy February begins with the king of the sword and sorcery movies...1982's Conan The Barbarian. This fantasy epic stars Arnold Schwartzenegger in the role he seemed destined to play! After being orphaned by an invading hoard, Conan becomes a slave who, once freed, seeks revenge against James Earl Jones' Thulsa Doom and his snake worshiping cult!
Our quest is at an end...the final episode in our Fantasy February series is here! In this episode, we take a look at 1987's Masters Of The Universe, a movie based on the popular cartoon series that, itself, was based on the ultra-popular Matel toy line! However, it didn't take place in Eternia, there was no Battle-cat, no Castle Greyskull and no sword of power but, what it did have was a generic, any-town USA setting, Courtney Cox, Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella and the rest of the cast trying their hardest to make a decent movie out of what they had to work with. That's why we gave this one the old "Drink 'Til It's Good!" treatment! Did the alcohol help us get through this one? Tune in and find out!!!
The quest continues as the Dads continue to wind their way through the dark forests of Fantasy February with a look at this weeks film...KRULL!
Welcome back to Fantasy February here at Movies that Make Us. This week, we discuss the 1986 classic Labyrinth. The film tells the story of 16-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly)'s quest to reach the center of an enormous maze to rescue her infant half-brother Toby who Sarah wished away to Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie). The majority of the characters in the film are played by puppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. This is a film many of us grew up with, but how does it hold up to current audiences? We would love to hear your thoughts on the film. Next week, we'll be discussing Jon Favreau's underappreciated film Zathura.Did you miss the video premier of this episode? It's Fantasy February here at Movies that Make Us, and this week we discuss the Japanese animated fantasy film Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. It tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who when moving to a new neighborhood, enters the world of Kami (spirits of Japanese Shinto folklore). After her parents are turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba, Chihiro takes a job working in Yubaba's bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.Beautiful, hand-drawn animation brings us into a world lush with unique characters and beautiful settings. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, making it the first and to date, the only hand-drawn and non-English-language animated film to win the award.Did you miss the video premier of this episode? It's the third week of Fantasy February and Kelly and Katai are discussing William Goldman's The Princess Bride, a novel of swashbuckling adventure and intrusive narration! They discuss the pitfalls of trying to comment on a terrible character as the author when the terrible character is the author, the etiquette of quoting movies and TV shows, reading a book that's like talking to an improviser who won't stop doing bits with you, and Kelly puts forth a bold theory about Michael Scott's affect on American politics.
