In the penultimate episode of the season, we're diving headfirst into the dark fantasy movie that defined 80s childhoods (for some of us, Dan included, maybe?) but was a complete box-office flop: Labyrinth (1986). Settle in for spoilers, swearing, and probably a tangent or two about where babies go when Jareth steals them. Was it just a logistical nightmare with all those puppets, animals, and babies? Yes. Does Jareth's portrayal raise some eyebrows today? Absolutely, he's the villain, you muppet! But despite its initial failure as a movie that flopped at the box-office, Labyrinth's unique blend of whimsy, darkness, and catchy songs (dance, magic, dance!) has cemented its status as a cult classic. We talk about the worm, the door knockers, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and why Jim Henson took the flop so hard. What to expect from this episode: Speculation on the film's deeper themes and interpretations, from it being a coming-of-age story about Sarah letting go of childhood things, an anti-hoarding message via the Garbage Lady, a metaphor for life's journey and friendship, or even the darker fan theory that the entire event is a result of Sarah's mental illness A deep dive into the incredible puppet work and practical effects, highlighting characters like Hoggle and the technical challenges of the "Swiss cheese" set Discussion about the confirmed sequel in development, touching on previous directors attached (Scott Derrickson, Fede Alvarez) and the current attachment of Robert Eggers (EGGERS!) He is also a fashion designer, one who has collaborated with the iconic David Bowie on his 2008 fashion line for Target. Since Keanan is a Bowie fan and collaborator, Ryan and Nicole thought it would be only fitting to talk to him about Jim Henson's 1986 film, Labyrinth. Russell Howard’s Wonderbox

I tell you what's fun to listen to: someone who loves cake, talking passionately about cake. Griefcast's Cariad Lloyd sits with Russell and waxes lyrical about Pavlova and wider cakes. There's more! We get all down and dirty with the Moomins and then there's a weird bit where Cariad and Russell start acting out passages from Labyrinth. Which music star was originally slated to play Jareth? It wasn't Bowie… the answer lies in this terrific episode. Cariad talked in the podcast about her book, the Christmas Wish-tastrophe, and that is available now, and if you know an 11-14 year old just get them this for Christmas. Then that one is done, another one off your list. They will read and enjoy it.  You can get that book at your local independent bookshop, or google the name of the book and choose an independent book provider online. You can do this! Don't just default to the monolithic behemoths! Cariad's regular podcast is Griefcast, where she talks to all manner of people about the various ways people deal with life when things are tough. Cariad is an absolutely incredible host and it's a wonderful podcast, whether you yourself are struggling or not. Check it out HERE.  In this week's Patreon show of Five Brilliant Questions, Cariad answered some deep knowledge questions about Gondor (It's Lord of the Rings apparently. I have no idea). She also reveals what kind of hat she would be (as always, really probing questions from you guys) and Russell has a crisis about hat-wearing in general.  Go to: patreon.com/RussellHoward to get involved. Looking forward to seeing you there!  And that faint glugging noise means our Bathysphere has reached the surface of the water and our underwater journey through the Great Sea of Blurb has come to an end. Let us make our soggy way into the decompression chamber and talk about all the magnificent words we saw over a lovely biscuit and a cup of tea.  See you next week. Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast! Next week is Thanksgiving, a holiday many of us celebrate by spending time with our families… whether we want to or not. Can you believe my family banned me from bringing the mashed potatoes just because of the time I piled them up into the shape of a mountain and screamed “THIS MEANS SOMETHING” while serving them? My family has no sense of humor. Or appreciation for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.On this week's episode I decided to share a few family films… not necessarily films made for families, but ones that feature families. Sure, some of them are non-traditional family units, but as you all know, we can't choose our families and sometimes we have to accept our relatives for who they are. Even if they're chainsaw-wielding cannibals. My first pick of the week is is the 1974 classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, featuring the Sawyer family. (If you're looking for a conversation starter over Thanksgiving dinner, you can now tell your family you know Leatherface's last name.) The legend of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is bigger than the film itself. It takes a while before our sacrificial teens get into trouble, and in full disclosure only one person gets killed by a chainsaw, which isn't much of a massacre. The film is nowhere near as gory as people think and people have ripped the idea off hundreds of times in other films, but it's always fun to go back and watch the source of so many horror movie tropers. Good for watching before or after Thanksgiving dinner, but probably not during.Next is 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and George Segal. Stylistically, this film always reminded me of 12 Angry Men. Both films (both of which were based on plays) have the ability through dialog to take you on an emotional ride. Both films made strong impressions in me. In Virginia Woolf, George and Martha (Burton and Taylor) invite a younger couple over for drinks after a dinner party. As the alcohol continues to flow, pointed barbs turn to nasty cuts as the couple weaponize their guests against one another. It's a masterclass in acting and you'll have to play close attention to fully understand everyone's motivations and, ultimately, the ending. Woolf is a tragic and powerful film that remains only one of two films to ever be nominated for every Academy Award category it was eligible for. My third recommendation this week is 1985's The Stuff. The Stuff is a delicious and addictive treat that may also be alive and turning people into mindless zombies. After The Stuff ravages the ice cream industry, a former FBI agent nicknamed Mo is hired to figure out what The Stuff is and who is marketing it. Meanwhile, a boy named Jason has discovered the dark side of The Stuff and fights with his family who demand he joins them. Before long Mo and Jason along with ice cream mogul Chocolate Chip Charlie team up to take on The Stuff. Remember, “Enough is never enough!” The Stuff is a little horror and a little comedy with a whole lot of thinly disguised social commentary sprinkled on top. Fun 80s schlock that might have you double-checking the whipped cream on top of your pumpkin pie.Lastly we have Labyrinth, released in 1986. One of Jim Henson's greatest film achievements, Labyrinth tells the story of Sarah, a girl who wishes the Goblin King would take away her young brother Toby… and immediately regrets it. Sarah must work her way through Jareth's labyrinth, with both help and detours presented by its inhabitants. Despite occasionally getting annoyed with our family, there's no stronger bond. While there's a good chance you've seen Labyrinth, I'm worried that maybe your kids, nieces or nephews, or grandkids haven't. This is a great film that deserves to be shared with the next generation. Thanks as always for stopping by the Video Store Podcast. We'll be closed on Thanksgiving which means you'll get an extas day's rental for free on any tapes rented this week. Don't forget to rewind your tapes before returning them, and be sure to pick up your complimentary cup of The Stuff from our snack bar on the way out. Enough is never enough! One of Dave's childhood favorites, despite a fair sledding from mates, is up for scrutiny this week! And with a 16 year old Jennifer Connely heading up against a middle aged pop star, what could possibly go wrong? directed by Jim Henson, was an ambitious blend of puppetry, live-action, and cutting-edge visual effects for its time. The film was a collaboration between Henson and executive producer George Lucas, with a screenplay by Monty Python's Terry Jones. Conceptual artist Brian Froud, known for his work on The Dark Crystal, played a significant role in designing the fantastical creatures and the world of the labyrinth itself. The movie's central character, Jareth the Goblin King, was brought to life by David Bowie, who also contributed original songs to the soundtrack, adding a surreal, musical dimension to the film. With a cast that included young Jennifer Connelly and over 100 puppets, the production involved complex puppetry, animatronics, and special effects to bring the magical world to life. The film was shot primarily at Elstree Studios in the UK, where elaborate sets were built to depict the vast, dreamlike maze. Henson's Creature Shop faced technical challenges, especially with creating characters like Hoggle, a puppet requiring multiple operators to control its facial expressions and movements. Though the film was not a box office success upon release, Labyrinth gained a devoted cult following over the years, praised for its imaginative design, memorable characters, and Bowie's iconic performance. The film's mix of fantasy, music, and pioneering practical effects has since solidified its place as a beloved classic in fantasy cinema. When her wish is granted and Jareth kidnaps Toby, Sarah has 13 hours to navigate a vast, magical labyrinth to save him before he is turned into a goblin. Along the way, she encounters a host of strange creatures and overcomes various challenges, learning about bravery and friendship. Saluton estas mi, Tyson Saner, welcoming you to Succotash Episode #347. I will be your host for the duration of this episode as it is my turn to do so. Last week in Epi346, subtitled "Clips Like a Lion", show creator and executive producer of Succotash Marc Hershon brought you a clips episode plus a little something extra. The clips featured in that episode were from the Soundcasts known as Dear Chelsea, The JTrain Podcast, and Two Vegan Idiots. The aformentioned extra took the form of a contribution from comedian Dan St. Paul's "Slices" blog, called "Rebel Without A Phone". It was an entertaining episode that, if you were to want to listen to that as well, you absolutely could on this listening platform, or on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Soundcloud, YouTube, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, PodBay, Podchaser, and, as always, on our homesite at SuccotashShow.com…this is provided, of course, that you found us somewhere other than those previously mentioned platforms. This week in Epi347 I have clips for you as well, and they are from the soundcasts How Did This Get Made, Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, and Nooner Podcast. It's extremely likely that you will also be encountering a classic advertisement from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants with an oh-so-apropos ad for their "Hooray for Hollywood pants somewhere later in the episode as well. CLIPS How Did This Get Made? We have featured clips from How Did This Get Made and soundcasts featuring those involved with it several times over the last almost 12 years. The most recent time was actually not all that recent though, in fact it was way back at the end of December of 2021 in Episode 284 subtitled "Clip The Halls" which is, of course in our archive were you to want to hear that sooner than later. Featuring hosts Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas, our clip is from February 23rd of this year where the hosts break down, coincidentally (or is it?), the thriller "The Number 23" starring Jim Carrey. They discuss all the bonkers names—from Topsy Kretts to Fingerling to Sirius Leary—the protagonist who hates dogs, Walter Sparrow's sanity, Bud Cort's crazy room, the son's childish mug gift, Danny Huston's villainous vibe, and Chekhov's Saxophone. Plus, they ask "At the beginning is Jim Carrey basically playing Ace Ventura?" And Paul reveals his theory that maybe Walter Sparrow's dog bite gave him rabies. Is Paul right? Crack the code! Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum This soundcast has been featured once before, back in the end of February 2019, in Episode 188, which Marc hosted in my stead while I was quite busy navigating life with my at-the-time newborn son Jareth. (This was back when the episodes typically featured 6 clips each and were not guaranteed to post with the regularity that they have been since around April of 2020 with our Succotash Shut-In phase of this program.)  In case you hadn't heard that episode, or don't know of Inside of You, the show description reads: "I'm Michael Rosenbaum, I've spent the better part of the last two decades in and out of film and television - mostly known for playing the bald dude on the show Smallville. I'm the guy that you probably don't know by name, but when you see my face you might say “oh, that guy from that thing.” I've befriended some of the most talented people in the business, but it wasn't until I started inviting them into my home that I realized, I didn't really know these people. What started as me having some fun, quickly evolved into something I've fallen in love with. What I've discovered is that all these people aren't that different from you and me. They have the same insecurities and flaws that we all deal with every day. In a dark, yet enlightening way…I find a lot of comfort in that. I invite you all to join me while I get inside each of these fascinating people." Our clips hails from September 6th of last year, and features guest Wil Wheaton (Stand By Me, Star Trek: TNG, Big Bang Theory), who shares his brave story of coming to grips with the trauma of his childhood, breaking the cycle so it doesn't carry on to future generations, and understanding that part of his healing process may lead to a lifetime split from his family. Nooner Really what can be said about Nooner Podcast that hasn't already been? The show started with Dan Etheridge and Marty Yu hosting from Kevin Smith's living room way back in 2011 with their 1st guest Martin Starr. (It's a soundcast that is ALMOST as old as Succotash itself!) Since it started, the show has had some lineup changes whose personalities include, but are not limited to, Stephen Kruger, Bill Watterson, Emily O'Hara (or O'Hare?  I don't know and it is extremely difficult to find information about her, but I did not hallucinate her…) Giselle Nett, John Pirruccello, Cassandra Cardenes, and John Sylvain. These are the most frequent co-hosts. Other folks who co-hosted more than once — and may I remind you that I am going from memory — include Scott Marvel Cassidy and Vivian Martinez.   I have been listening to and contributing to the show in some way or another since the beginning, including music and live #tumblr ing which becomes harder to explain as time goes by. They are a nice group of people who have been very morally and creatively supportive of me over the years, so featuring them occasionally in place of perhaps a soundcast that I've never heard before seems reasonable to me. With that in mind, this clip is from the end of January this year, Ep: "Babylon Is the Worst First Date". Hosts Marty and John talk nonsense, but just fast forward to hear the funny MIRP, Cassandra, talk about why weddings are bullshit and why Babylon is like disappointing sex. And that brings us more-or-less neatly to the end of this episode of "Succotash". I do hope you found something interesting and/or enjoyable in the last half hour or so of content. It's Oscar day as I write this, and will likely be Oscar night as I am recording this. I'm rooting for "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" to win best picture. It's been nominated for 11 Oscars, and I hope they win nearly all of them. I say "Nearly" because one of the categories they've been nominated for is "Best Song", and although I'm sure that the Son Lux/Mitski/David Byrne song "This is a life" from E2A2O is perfectly fine, "Naatu Naatu" from "RRR" is also nominated, and that song is AWESOME. To be fair, I haven't listened to "This is a life" that closely…certainly not to the degree that I've heard "Naatu Naatu"…(sigh)…ok, I will be right back, I'm going to give the E2A2O song a closer listen. (pause)  Ok, I have listened to it closely. I absolutely grok it.…But I still really want "Naatu Naatu" to win. At the very least, I hope to enjoy seeing the Oscar performance of "Naatu Naatu" later on YouTube. Assuming that there is an Oscar performance of "Naatu Naatu" planned…and why wouldn't there be?  As I mentioned before, it is AWESOME.   And so are you, for listening. The next episode will be hosted by Mr. Hershon, and it will most likely be numbered #348. We are sailing along to our 12 year anniversary of this show, and will see you when we get there, one way or another. Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and should you be out there in the world with thoughts about anything you heard in this episode, and you feel any reason to share that information with other people, we'd appreciate that a great deal. It's what we mean when we ask you to PLEASE…Pass The Succotash. — Tyson Saner

We're the babes with the power! And this week we're kicking off March Madness with a David Bowie cult classic better known as Labyrinth (1986). After wishing away her baby brother and instantly regretting that choice, self-absorbed teen Sarah makes an unwitting deal with the goblin king Jareth to win him back. She must venture through a complicated, often life-threatening, and lesson packed labyrinth to reach baby Toby before the clock strikes midnight and he's trapped there forever. Along the way she makes a series of unexpected friends and begins to learn the value of growing up and shedding her immature behavior. This movie has a pretty significant hold on the cult classic world, but do we get the hype? Or is this flick just a little too "nothing tra la la" for us? Let's find out together!

“They got Orson Welles to do the farts” The panel of peril adjust their codpieces, lacquer their hair profusely, and settle down with our goblin lackeys to watch this week's film Labyrinth (Jim Henson, 1986). Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly) is a young woman who lives in somewhat of a fantasy world. And by that, I mean that she dresses up as a medieval princess down at her local park. Her parents aren't happy about her lack of responsibility at all, but she's having none of it. Until the night that she is pulled into an actual (?) fantasy world by Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie) and tasked with negotiating the titular labyrinth in order to rescue her baby brother. Umm, let's just say high jinks ensue, okay? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2yd4em1I6M ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Turns out old Jareth has no interest in the child after all, instead he seeks Sarah's hand in marriage before the stroke of midnight… … Bit weird. But fear not! Sarah has help in the form of dashing dog Sir Didymus, crotchety old troll Hoggle, and big, weird friendly monster Ludo! The fantastic four, you might call them. David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie (/ˈboʊi/ BOH-ee),[1] was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Bowie was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music.Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century.

Solomon sacrifices an entire species worth of goats, and God is so excited he lights himself on fire. Jareth says to Sarah in the movie Labyrinth, "I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave." This pretty much sums up what God asks of the Israelites. Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson with George Lucas as executive producer. Based on conceptual designs by Brian Froud, the film was written by Terry Jones, and many of its characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. The film stars Jennifer Connelly as 16-year-old Sarah and David Bowie as Jareth, The Goblin King. In Labyrinth, Sarah embarks on a quest to reach the center of an enormous, otherworldly maze to rescue her infant half-brother Toby, whom she wished away to Jareth. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tradepaperbacks/message --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

Will Collins and Kevin Lehane from The Best Bits Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Will's choice Labyrinth. Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy directed by Jim (The Muppets) Henson and written by Terry (Monty Python) Jones. It stars David Bowie (who also wrote the songs) as Jareth the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly, in her breakout role, as Sarah. After wishing that the goblins come and take away her baby brother Toby, Sarah has to tackle the labyrinth in 13 hours to rescue him or he will turn into a goblin. Along the way she encounters its unusual inhabitants - friends Hoggle, Ludo, Sir Didymus and foes The Firey's and the Bog of Eternal Stench. Hard to believe but Labyrinth was a box office flop and opened to mixed reviews, over the years, due it part to Bowie's legacy, it has firmly become a cult classic and frequently sells out cinema screenings. Labyrinth scores very highly across all Flixwatcher categories, only dropping a few points on small screen to score a very respectable 4.65 overall. Enjoyed this episode? “Turn Back, Sarah. Turn back before it's too late.” We watched Labyrinth (1986) with our good-Judy Jared Anderson and we wish the Goblin King would come and take you away… right now. Sixteen-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelley) faces off against Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) and a generation's sexual awakening began. Bowie is giving androgynous ren-faire realness and Connelley is giving ethereal drama-kid/teen model. And you can trust and believe we get into that cod-piece. Is it icky that the Goblin King is so actively seducing this young girl?  A little, but it's all fantasy and (spoiler alert) Sarah finds her way back to her kick ass bedroom in her dad and stepmoms sweet Victorian house in Portland.  The puppet work by Jim Henson's Creature Shop will transport you to another world, the costumes will make you want to head over to Party City right now, and the MUSIC! Don't get us started on the soundtrack by David Bowie.  It's FIRE.  Grab a cold mug of mead, break out your tights and lets get theatrical!  Say it with us… “You have no power over me!”   Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

Dark, dangerous and super-creepy...yup, we're talking about Jim Henson's 1986's children cult-classic Labyrinth. Sarah is a spoiled brat, lost in a fantasy world, who wishes away her poor little baby brother Toby. Jareth, a goblin king with a penchant for super-tight trousers and teased hair, grants her wish only to become a total creepazoid as he obsesses over owning her. It's a classic with puppets and poppy tunes to sing along to - "Dance Baby Dance"!
