Shula Tas praat met fotograaf Farren van Wyk over haar tentoonstelling Mixedness is my mythology, nu te zien in Fotomuseum Den Haag. Vanaf 4 april 2026 presenteert Fotomuseum Den Haag de eerste museale solotentoonstelling van de Zuid-Afrikaans-Nederlandse fotograaf Farren van Wyk (1993): Mixedness is my Mythology. In deze tentoonstelling onderzoekt Van Wyk via fotografie de complexe historische en persoonlijke relatie tussen Zuid-Afrika en Nederland, en reflecteert zij op thema's als migratie, etniciteit, kolonialisme en apartheid. De tentoonstelling is van 4 april t/m 23 augustus te zien in fotomuseum Den Haag. Met de tentoonstelling brengt Van Wyk een gelaagd en persoonlijk fotografisch onderzoek naar gemengde identiteit. Geboren in 1993, het laatste jaar van de apartheid, met een Zuid-Afrikaanse moeder en een Nederlandse vader, werd zij in Zuid-Afrika geclassificeerd als ‘coloured'. Vanaf haar zesde groeide zij op in het Nederlandse dorp Putten, waar uiteenlopende culturele invloeden – Nederlandse, Zuid-Afrikaanse en de Afrikaanse diaspora - samenkwamen in haar leefwereld. Familie In Mixedness is my Mythology staat haar familie centraal. Van Wyk fotografeert haar ouders, broers en maakt het werk in samenwerking met hen. Ze onderzocht hoe de apartheidscategorie 'coloured' haar geschiedenis heeft gevormd, en gaandeweg heeft zij samen met haar familie de opgelegde identiteit gedeconstrueerd en hun eigen identiteit gevisualiseerd. De beelden tonen intieme portretten en zorgvuldig geënsceneerde momenten waarin familieleden niet alleen onderwerp, maar ook medevertellers worden. Het boeren familiebedrijf in Putten, waar de familie woont, vormt in alle foto's de achtergrond. Zwart-wit fotografie Van Wyk kiest bewust voor de traditionele beeldtaal van zwart-witfotografie. In dit ogenschijnlijke grijze gebied bevraagt en herdefinieert zij wat het betekent om een ‘persoon van kleur' te zijn. De keuze voor zwart-wit maakt ruimte voor reflectie op representatie, zichtbaarheid en geschiedenis. Tegelijkertijd werkt zij toe naar een persoonlijke en collectieve aanvaarding van een gemengde identiteit. Door het ontwikkelen van een eigen iconografie creëert Van Wyk haar eigen mythologie, een visueel universum waarin verleden en heden, familiegeschiedenis en maatschappelijke structuren samenkomen.
