Chris Howe endured 17 long years of addiction to alcohol and drugs while working as a firefighter. He was different from everyone else in the department. He was smaller, tattooed and spent his time away from the job with alcoholics, addicts and criminals. This double life filled him with self hatred and secrets. He'd been effected deeply by childhood sexual trauma and PTSD on the job and had no place to put it. Instead he was asked everyday to bottle up his feelings and do his job and the only way to cope involved massive amounts of alcohol and drugs to numb it all.Eventually the internal pressure became too much, resulting in 3 suicide attempts in 3 years before finally finding recovery on the morning he wrote his final suicide plan.Today, Chris is 11 years sober, a Captain with the Niagra Falls Fire Department and an addiction recovery speaker. He shares his story in and out of the prison system, leads a Buddhist inspired recovery group and hopes to inspire others through his actions and his new life in recovery.Episode ResourcesAuthentic Adversity Podcast Instagram | @AUTHENTICADVERSITYConnect with ChrisInstagram |  @chrishoweConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website |lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram |@couragetochange_podcastYouTube |The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok |@ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email |podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook |@thecouragetochangepodcast

Ep 273 - First Responder PTSD Guest: Bob Rich   The average person experiences about four events in their lives that could trigger PTSD. The average career cop encounters between 100 and 400 incidents that could trigger PTSD. Retired Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich knows this all too well.   In early 2015 Chief Rich lost two active members of the police department by their own hand. Their deaths shook him to the core. He was forced to look inward at his leadership, at the culture within his police department and in the first responder community. What was happening that PTSD and stigma rates were so high?    Chief Rich took on the responsibility of identifying the source and changing the culture. His first priority became the wellness of his team. Rich says, “These are women and men who put their lives on the line everyday to keep their community safe. In return, it is my job to keep them safe.”     He identified that a “suck it up” culture was one of the root causes and it was counterproductive putting everyone at risk. He and his team went to work to implement those needed changes. Then came the killing of Constable John Davidson, which rocked the policing community in Abbotsford, the Lower Mainland and the province.    Thanks to the support of the Vancouver Police and other police officers who took over law enforcement duties in the city for more than a week, the Abbotsford PD was able to take a knee, psychologically, physically and emotionally. Bob Rick says, “As a result, we didn’t lose another member – which can happen.” In Ontario over the past year, nine officers took their own lives.    Bob Rich is determined to help other police departments do what Abbotsford has begun to do – create a culture that understands the trauma of horrific incidents and supports one another.   We invited Bob Rich to join us for a Conversation That Matters about caring for the well-being of all first responders who care about us.   Conversations That Matter is a partner program for the Morris J Wosk Center for Dialogue at Simon Fraser University. We serve those who experience work-related PTSD. To perform at their best, first responders (police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, nurses, doctors, veterinarians, and social workers) need coping skills to deal with repetitive on-the-job trauma.Alfred made a conscious choice not to let his past dictate who he became. Rising from the ashes and harnessing the power of his early years — living in shelters, a group home, and a foster home while attending six high schools in four years — Alfred reveals how even the most daunting traumas can be overcome. A double major in economics and business led to an MBA from the University of California and a career in international banking. While working in 20+ countries, Alfred experienced some highly toxic business cultures. Combining his experience of releasing trauma with his knowledge of the massive stress of corporate life, Alfred’s mission is to share the necessary skills to thrive in traumatic work environments.ABOUT AND CONTACT:Alfred has 10+ years of teaching personal development workshops, including methods to release severe trauma. “There were always people along the way who supported me. The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Stephen is a long time NJ resident who has been given the gift of many experiences in life. For most of his adult life, he served as Paramedic for 15+ years in many jurisdictions in NJ, PA, and DE. He also had the honor of serving as a rescue worker at the World Trade Center on 9-11-01 in NYC. Stephen has seen tragedy and suffering first hand. While saving countless overdose victims in his career, he always felt a pang of sadness when his colleagues would treat a hurting person poorly due to their ignorance of the problem. Little did they know that he soon would be no different than many of his patients and that he was the one who needed the saving. It took him overdosing multiple times and having been revived by former colleagues, losing his certification, career, marriage, and children to finally stop Stephen from working towards his grave and start working a recovery program. His focus is to open up the conversation about addressing the underlying pain, trauma, or lack of coping skills that makes one decide to self-medicate in the first place. If it can happen to the rescuer himself then who perhaps “should have known better”, thus showing proof that no one is immune to the disease of addiction. Stephen’s story has to be told to give others the courage to voice their pain. Pain shared is pain lessened. He has expertise in Emergency Medical Care, First Responder PTSD and Substance Abuse issues, Recovery Coaching, Intervention, Leadership, and Spiritual Studies. He is also a charter member of the Southern Delaware Toastmasters International Club. He is available for coaching, mentorship, speaking engagements, guest interviews, content production, and consultation services. Stephen is proud to be the host and creator of the Rescue the Rescuer show, the only show in the world geared towards first responders who battle mental health issues including PTSD, Substance Abuse Disorder, and more. His show is hosted on the Mental Health News Radio Network where he also serves as the Director of Network Compliance. Stephen is regularly sought out for national and international TV, podcasts, and print media for his expertise.
