Episode 516: Ingrid Newkirk Round 2 Co-founder, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Advisory Board member, EarthSave International; Advisory Board member, United Poultry Concerns; Director, The Foundation to Support Animal Protection; animal rights activistIngrid Newkirk isn't just the President of PETA, she's also a militant activist. She's soaked herself in fake blood, of course, but she's also been arrested more than 20 times. And she's an avowed supporter of the terrorist Animal Liberation Front. Newkirk wrote a book called Free the Animals! The Untold Story of the U.S. Animal Liberation Front and Its Founder, ‘Valerie.' In it she writes that she has “become somewhat used to jumping on a plane with copies of freshly purloined documents and hurriedly calling news conferences to discuss the ALF's findings.” In 1993, Newkirk arranged an interview for TIME magazine with “Valerie.” Later, the animal-rights movement would be abuzz with speculations that Valerie was just one of Newkirk's PETA employees. The entire episode has suggested what many federal law enforcement officers have openly speculated: that ALF and PETA may be populated with identical personnel, the only difference being a setting sun and a ski mask. Newkirk gives interviews to ALF's publications, supports the legal defense efforts of ALF criminals (with PETA's money), has been subpoenaed in regard to her ALF connections, and has even been accused in court documents of participation in the ALF arson of a Michigan State University research lab. In the 1970s, Newkirk worked for Montgomery County (Maryland), and then for the District of Columbia, as an animal protection officer and deputy sheriff, before becoming DC's first female poundmaster in 1978. She co-founded PETA in 1980 with established animal rights activist Alex Pacheco. Since then, PETA and Newkirk have become synonymous. Former employees refer to PETA as “the cult of Newkirk.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michaeldecon/support

Adam Griffin and Cassie Bryant are joined by Leonard Sax to have a conversation about the differences between boys and girls, how culture shapes and forms them, and what that means for us as parents.Questions Covered in This Episode:Could you tell us a little about your family and your work? What has your research revealed about the importance of gender? Can you talk to us a little about the differences between boy's and girl's development as well as why you think our educational system isn't making adjustments specifically for those differences? What accommodations would serve our boys better? How are screens and video games impacting this generation of boys and what would be some healthy alternatives?Where do you see a lack of discipleship or “rites of passage” playing a role in the challenges this generation of boys is facing? What impact is culture's drive to sexualize young girls having on this generation? How can parents lead their daughters well as they navigate a culture that rushes them into sexuality? How can we help our daughters develop a sense of who they are without their identity being rooted in someone else's standards especially when so much of our daughter's identity formation has been tied to sexuality, grades, achievements, or looks? Why do you think that “self-control in childhood is a far better predictor of success in adulthood than grades in school” and how can we help kids develop self-control? How do you see the spiritual leadership of a home as an important aspect of parenting? What are some ways that we can pray for you?Guest Bio:Leonard Sax went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both a PhD in psychology and an MD. In this episode, we explore the findings of a recent study on Neighborhood Change in the Washington DC metropolitan region, with a focus on Montgomery County, Maryland. The research, conducted by the Montgomery County Planning Department, a part of the The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), found that the most pressing issue in the county is low-income concentration, rather than displacement. Additionally, the study revealed that new housing construction is associated with inclusive economic growth in diverse neighborhoods. This research was based on a methodology developed by the University of Minnesota and was advanced by the Research and Strategic Projects Division at Montgomery Planning. The findings were presented to the Montgomery County Planning Board on May 19, 2022, and an interactive map showing low-income concentration, inclusive growth, and displacement in the region is available on the department's website. The Purple Line Corridor Coalition's Housing Action Plan also in place, and the department's long-term vision for the county, Thrive Montgomery 2050, is also discussed. Casey Anderson, the Montgomery County Planning Board Chair, Tanya Stern, Deputy Director and former DC planner, and Ben Kraft, a researcher at Montgomery Planning and the author of the neighborhood change analysis, provide insight on the study's key findings.

BOYS ADRIFT: WHY ADHD IS DEFINITELY OVERDIAGNOSED is a powerful episode with Dr. Leonard Sax, author of 'Boys Adrift', 'Girls on the Edge', 'Why Gender matters' and 'The Collapse of parenting'. We talked about the reasons for the overdiagnosis of children with ADHD and about the type of medications that have harmful longterm effects on children's motivation center in the brain (nucleus accumbens). Most experts are not aware of the studies that clearly show that children medicated with methamphetamines (Adderall, Dexedrine, Focalin) show a higher lack of motivation in the long term than children medicated with methylphenidates such as Concerta, Focalin or Quillivant. Oh, and we also talked about the financial ties that many ADHD experts have to pharmaceutical companies, especially institutions such as Harvard Medical School... I think you'll like this episode very much so! Dr. Sax earned his bachelor's degree in biology from MIT, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in five semesters at the age of 19. He then went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his PhD in psychology, and his MD. Next he did a 3-year residency in family practice at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster Pennsylvania. In 1990, he established a family practice in Montgomery County Maryland, just outside Washington DC. He provided care for children and adults in Montgomery County for more than 18 years. He took a 5-year sabbatical, 2008 to 2013, to devote himself full-time to visiting schools and communities, and to writing. He returned to clinical practice in 2013 near his home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, while continuing to lead workshops and give keynotes based on his visits to more than 460 communities over the past 20 years. Dr. Sax has led workshops and given keynotes not only all across North America – from California to Nova Scotia and from Alaska to Florida – but also in Australia, Bermuda, England, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland. A pair of young sisters went missing in 1975 from a shopping mall in Montgomery County Maryland, a wealthy suburb of Washington D.C. Thirty eight years later, a mislaid witness statement caught a detective's eye, and that witness, who at the time had been dismissed as a flaky young loser, was suddenly a suspect. Host John Farrell speaks with Marie Donahue, ILSR researcher, and Neil Seldman, Director of ILSR's Waste to Wealth Initiative, about the harmful impacts of burning trash to generate electricity. The trio dive into ILSR's recent report Waste Incineration: A Dirty Secret in How States Define Renewable Energy. They also discuss: Baltimore's recent passage of the Clean Air Act, a bill that will effectively shut down the Wheelabrator incinerator. Three key reasons why incinerators are a bad deal for communities including: financial risk, environmental injustice, and public health concerns. The story behind the successful efforts to shutdown two incinerators in Baltimore. Neil details how residents of the marginalized Curtis Bay neighborhood organized at the grassroots level to advocate for their community. How 23 states are providing subsidies to incinerators by allowing them to benefit from renewable energy tax credits. What communities and cities can do instead of hosting incinerators to manage their waste, foster a healthier environment, and create jobs. The economics of incinerators don't add up. Incinerators are risky investments for the local governments and utilities that support and subsidize them, particularly as energy prices decline [thanks to renewable alternatives.] Related Resources Report: Waste Incineration: A Dirty Secret in How States Define Renewable Energy Webinar: Waste Incineration: A Dirty Secret in How States Define Renewable Energy Baltimore's Historic Clean Air Act Could End Stagnation in Recycling Report on the Proposed Baltimore Clean Air Act Report: Why Should Baltimore Recycle More? 2019 Community Power Scorecard The Zero Waste Solution by Paul Connett Plastic Ocean by Capt. With me this week are Marie Donahue, ILSR researcher and author of Waste Incineration: A Dirty Secret in How States Define Renewable Energy. Welcome Marie. Marie Donahue: Thanks for having me John. John Farrell: Also with me is Neil Seldman ILSR co-founder, director of our waste to wealth initiative, and the death knell to dozens of garbage incinerators across the country. Welcome Neil. Neil Seldman: Pleasure to be here with both you and Marie. John Farrell: Today I'm excited to talk to the two of you about how communities can save money, have healthier kids, and create more jobs by shutting down garbage incinerators. And I'd like to start with something very recent. Neil I was hoping you could explain how a recent city council decision in Baltimore will impact the Wheelabrator Incinerator that's responsible for so much of the city's industrial pollution. Neil Seldman About two weeks ago the city council voted unanimously, 14 to zero with one absent person, one city council member absent, who would have voted for the act as well. But the Baltimore Clean Air Act sets new standards for both burning garbage, and burning hospital and hazardous waste in the city of Baltimore. It requires that both incinerators meet the state of the art best practices in pollution control equipment, it requires constant monitoring coming out of the incinerator, which is technologically possible, and it also requires that the information on the constant monitoring be made public on a webpage as is being done in Montgomery County Maryland just to the south of Baltimore, Maryland. The situation in Baltimore is slightly different from Montgomery County, which we can get into. But in Baltimore the Wheelabrator company owns a facility called Bresco. B-R-E-S-C-O. And that facility is about 35 to 40 years old. The city sends its non recycled waste to that incinerator in downtown Baltimore. Most of the materials generated in Baltimore go there,

In the 1980s, Montgomery County, Maryland set aside one-third of the county—93,000 acres—for agricultural uses. It was a remarkable act of stewardship, especially in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, where land is at a premium. Since then more than 500 farm operations produce food for local residents and for people around the world. The Reserve has become a national model for land preservation and has created space for food production, but also for clean air and water, recreation, and history. Independent writer, Claudia Kousoulas and producer, Ellen Letourneau have created a cookbook whose recipes, profiles, essays and photographs trace the Reserve’s history.
