In this episode of The Next Level Health & Fitness Podcast, I sit down with James Yount — a longtime listener and social media supporter who reached out to share his personal story of transformation. And after hearing it, I knew we had to record this episode. James has been sober from meth for five years. But his story isn't your typical “before and after.” He was actually overweight during his active addiction — something not often talked about — and has since lost a significant amount of weight as part of his journey back to health. We dive deep into his addiction, what finally led to his rock bottom, and how he found a new path through faith and fitness. James doesn't coach, sell programs, or try to be anything other than what he is: a guy in recovery who's passionate about sharing his story to help others. This is one of those episodes that reminds you why we do this work. It's real, it's raw, and it's full of heart. We cover: James' battle with meth addiction and how he finally got clean The unique challenge of being overweight during active addiction How faith became the foundation of his recovery The role fitness played in rebuilding his life What keeps him grounded today — five years sober and thriving Whether you're in recovery, know someone who is, or just need a reminder of the power of redemption — this one's worth a listen.     Register for our June 3rd masterclass - click here   Interested in working with a coach? Rob Lohman's battle with addiction began at just 14 years old, fueled by a family history of alcoholism. Throughout his teenage and young adult years, he lived a chaotic, chameleon-like existence, losing his true identity to drinking and drug use. Despite the mistakes he made during those years, Rob credits his journey with giving him the powerful stories he now uses to help others move from addiction to recovery. One night, while drinking heavily at a bar in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Rob experienced a moment of divine intervention. He heard the words, "You're done," in the middle of the crowd and later, at home, came within seconds of taking his own life. It was the nudge of his dog, Jake, and a flood of thoughts about his family that saved him. The next day, Rob reached out for help, attended his first AA meeting, and has remained sober for 18 years, building a new life filled with family, purpose, and faith. Sober since 2001, Rob Lohman helps people suffering from substance abuse to find freedom from addiction and incarceration. Your brain is not producing adequate amounts of neurotransmitters.   Neurotransmitters control your reality–your mood, memory, thinking and behavior.    And when your brain has what it needs, you naturally feel relaxed and alert, focused and positive–even happy.    But when your brain does not have what it needs, you get symptoms like anxiety, depression, anger and irritability, apathy, low energy and motivation, sleep problems and loss of memory, focus and attention.    An inadequate supply of neurotransmitters is why you have the urge to use substances like sugar, alcohol, caffeine and prescription medications to cope or compensate.   The good news is that nutrients you need are inexpensive and widely available. And clinical studies show that following simple nutritional protocols gives you FIVE TO ONE ODDS of overcoming substance use disorders.   In this episode, I give you a basic overview of the vitamins, minerals and amino acid supplements that can restore your sense of confidence and control.    —Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL if you're ready to fully commit to your personal growth and do the work to get emotionally sober. Do you feel pressure when you think about changing your relationship with alcohol? Like "good behavior" is just one more thing you have to work on?   The reason drinking less (or not at all) feels impossible for many women is because alcohol has become a coping mechanism for stress.    The problem is that drinking to relieve stress is the fast-past to addiction. Because the more stress you feel, the more you want to drink. And when you start drinking more than your body can tolerate, your own guilt and shame fuel the cycle.    But learning how to reduce your stress with meditation can quickly inhibit your desire for alcohol…even if you've never meditated for a minute in your life. You don't have to spend hours or commit to a regular practice.   Becoming skilled in techniques that shut off stress hormones means you'll no longer have to rely on alcohol, medications or supplements to relax and quiet your mind. Ann Swanson is a yoga therapist and best selling author of two books: The Science of Yoga and Meditation for the Real World. In this episode, you'll learn: How meditation changes your brain chemistry and structure… making you smarter and happier. How to find a meditation practice that meets your needs so that you're motivated to stick with it Simple strategies and techniques that non-meditators can use to get started How to use mindfulness practices to change your relationship with alcohol   Click here to find Ann's new book + free meditations and find her on YouTube and Instagram   Are you on TikTok? Do you rely on negative self-talk for motivation?   Most high achieving perfectionists are unknowingly driven by a fear of failure. We think we have to DO good in order to BE good…Worthiness must be earned.    We're conditioned at an early age to avoid punishment and chase rewards. And the voices of judgment and criticism are so deeply ingrained in our psyche that we don't even notice the stream of verbal abuse that creates a constant state of threat in our nervous system.   Which means we misinterpret external circumstances as the source of our anxiety and stress. And exhaust ourselves with attempts to control the outside world to meet our subconscious standards.    But even when we succeed, the relief is only temporary. Because the definition of “good enough” is always changing.    The solution is to learn how to manage your mind. Stop the negative self-talk. So that you can feel safe and secure…with yourself…and have the resilience to manage the problems in everyday life.   Michelle Maidenber, Ph.D., MPH and LCSW-R is the author of ACE Your Life: Unleash Your Best Self and Live the Life You Want. Are you in the habit of “starting over” when it comes to losing weight?   Most of us pair an ideal number on the scale with an end date on the calendar when trying to lose weight. And then radically alter our diet and exercise routines in a full sprint towards the goal.    If we fail, we feel depressed, defeated and convinced that we either have no willpower OR a faulty metabolism (and probably both).   If we succeed, the victory feels heroic. We buy the flattering outfit, humbly accept the compliments and share the highlights of our transformation with jealous friends.    But either way, within a few months, our body returns to its enigmatic “set point” weight. And we get tired of swimming against the tide.    Allan Misner is the host of the top-ranking podcast, 40+ Fitness and author of The Wellness Roadmap. Allan became a health and fitness coach after he escaped the rollercoaster that kept him bouncing between fitness and fatness. You'll walk away from this interview with: Strategies that actually generate motivation in your brain (so you can stop hoping it magically appears next Monday) Allan's mindset mapping strategy that teaches you how to achieve external goals by first strengthening your connection to your internal core values and identity. How to set goals you're excited to work towards where weight loss is the side effect instead of the sole focus.   I'd love to hear your takeaways! Have you tried taking a break from alcohol so that you can reset your tolerance…only to fall back into default habits that leave you hungover?   The cycle is exhausting. We vacillate between trying to outsmart the urge to drink and feeling hopeless and ashamed because we failed.   And the more our focus and energy revolve around alcohol, the less happy and fulfilled we feel.   The reason the average over-drinker struggles for ten years before asking for help is because we assume we have to quit drinking forever. And the idea of sobriety feels like a vow of celibacy. Or agreeing to be neutered.   But millions of people for whom COVID proved to be the tipping point into alcohol addiction are now embracing evidence-based strategies to escape the cycle of self-defeat. And they are discovering the best way to stop over-drinking is actually the way that feels most inviting to YOU.   My guest today is James Swanwick, the host of the top-rated Alcohol-Free Lifestyle podcast. In this episode, you'll learn: How to know if you need an extended period of sobriety What happens to the 95 percent of people who don't stick with AA  Why joining a like-minded community that aligns with your desired identity makes changing your drinking habits so much easier How to choose goals that make you happy so that drinking less (or not at all) is connected to a greater sense of purpose.   Find more with James Swanwick at https://www.jamesswanwick.com/   Register for the FREE Masterclass on the 8 core principles of the Accelerated Recovery Process that you must master if you want to drink (and not drink) like a normal person.  Click here for the link to my new SECRET podcast....get the Foundations of Emotional Sobriety audio course delivered right to your phone!

The secret to drinking like a normal person is not perfection. There is no "right" amount of alcohol that you should or shouldn't drink.    The truth of your experience with (and without) alcohol is always changing based on your stress, hormones, social dynamics, sleep needs, etc.   It's not what you think, it's how you feel.   You have to learn how to deal with what is--instead of what "should be." How much you drank last night is NOT what matters when you wake up with a hangover. It's how you respond to yourself and your needs in the present moment.   In this episode, I breakdown a recent "emergency" call from one of my clients. Get the step by step process I use to orient yourself within the process of change next time you wake up and realize you "did it again."   Learn how to shift from a fixed to a growth mindset so that you can quickly forgive yourself, extract the lesson and refine your strategy to move forward.    Are you looking for a hangover whisperer?   Register for my FREE masterclass to learn the 8 core principles of my Accelerated Recovery Process©.

Does managing your weight feel like a stressful, full-time job?   We've been programmed to believe that controlling our inner fat slob requires willpower.    So we count calories, avoid entire food groups and shame ourselves for overeating.   But willpower requires focus. And the more distracted and stressed we are, the less control we have.    Which makes it even harder to deal with urges and cravings. And that makes us more distracted and stressed. It's a downward spiral.   For some of us, the obsession with diet leads to full blown food addiction. We get so in our heads that we don't even remember what it feels like to be normal around food.    Habits of self-abuse and neglect lead to isolation, binge eating and the loss of physical and mental vitality.     Kerry Tepedino is a weight loss coach and best selling author of the book One Thought Away. In this episode, we discuss the fear of being fat and how to heal your mind so you can reclaim your self-control. You'll learn… The difference between overeating and food addiction How to identify the disordered thinking patterns that trigger binge eating The emotional processing skills you need to control yourself with food How to leverage your desire to be happy so you can heal your fear of being fat   Find Kerry's book at https://onethoughtawaybook.com/ Follow Kerry @kerrytepedino   Email or DM @RecoverwithColleen with your questions.
