Crom Cruach, an enigmatic figure from Ireland's pre-Christian past, is mentioned in texts like the Annals of the Four Masters and the Metrical Dindshenchas, but much of what we know is fragmentary and colored by Christian reinterpretation. Was Crom Cruach a fearsome idol demanding human sacrifice, or a misunderstood deity associated with fertility, prosperity, and abundance?✨ Irish Pagan Resources Checklist available NOW - https://irishpagan.school/checklist/

The The Lebor Gabála tells of a series of mythical Irish migration stories, which can be traced back to a very early date. Its history is somewhat complex and, although fascinating, it is not an 'easy read'. So, join Chris and Jamie as they share Jamie's new telling. 'The Writing of The Takings'. Jamie has created an entertaining and highly amusing interpretation, which gets to the heart of how and why these mythical migration stories were so valued. Read the full version of The Writing of the Takings. Highly recommended! Jamie is planning to record an audio version of 'The Writing of the Takings'. I will add a link to this as soon as it is available. Meanwhile, find out more about Jamie's writing on Jamiemadden.org About the Lebor Gabála / The Book of Invasions or the Book of the Taking of Ireland The ‘Book of Invasions' (‘Leabhar Gabhála' in modern Irish) is not the name of a specific manuscript. Rather it is an origin legend of the Irish people that exists in many variant versions, in poetry and prose. The origins of the tradition can be traced to the seventh century, although the earliest surviving manuscripts are much later. The story was extensively reworked in verse form in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Over time, prose versions were derived from the poetry, and additional historical material was added. It was revised again in the seventeenth century by the team of historians known as the Four Masters. It continued to be accepted as a plausible story of the settlement of people on the island of Ireland long after that. The core of the story of the peopling of Ireland was built on top of biblical traditions. It begins with Noah and the Flood, and Noah's granddaughter Cesair (she does not feature in the Bible), who was said to be the first to arrive in Ireland. The next wave involved the Parthalonians, descendants of Japhet, son of Noah, but they succumbed to plague. The third wave of settlers, descendants of Nemed, were vaguely related to the Parthalonians. The Nemedians were eventually defeated by the Formorians. Some Nemedians later returned from Greece as the Fir Bolg. They, in turn, were replaced by the Tuatha Dé Danann. A second strand traces other descendants of Japhet, including Fénius Farsaid and his grandson, Goídel Glas (the term ‘Gael' is traced to him). Later, Breóghan, descended from Goídel Glas, viewed Ireland from a tower in Galicia on a clear night. His grandson, Míl Espáine, went to Ireland, where he defeated the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Clann Mhíleadh (‘sons of Míl'), Ír, Éibhear and Éireamhón and their descendants, became established in Ireland. From https://www.ria.ie/leabhar-gabhala-book-invasions

After multiple years as a best-selling toy-line and popular animated series, it seemed like a live-action movie was a can't-miss proposition for Mattel's Masters of the Universe property. But between an untested leading man, a notoriously cheap studio, and disagreements over what the movie should be between various involved parties, even the mighty He-Man was no match for the difficulties of Hollywood franchise filmmaking. "Fall Back to the 80s" continues as we take a look at the film that confused and angered many children back in 1987....well, at least the ones who even bothered to see it in the first place. PULL OVER #5 Donamon Castle          Location: 53.631712, -8.318195  Donamon Castle is one of the oldest inhabited buildings in Ireland. There was a fort here from early times, but the first recorded reference is in the Annals of the Four Masters for the year 1154. It was the seat of the O'Finnaghys, the Chiefs of Clan Conway, who held the land for miles around. In 1232, Adam de Staunton, a Norman Knight, improved the buildings, but they were demolished by the O'Connors the following year. The rebuilt Castle was occupied in 1294 by de Oddingseles. He died the following year. The de Birminghams then took over but it was again destroyed by the O'Connors. 1307 saw the last of the O'Finaghys and the first of the Burkes. The McDavid Burkes occupied it for the next 300 years.

In episode 5 of Shelfmarks Zoë explores the myth of Cessair and Fintan mac Bochra from the Leabhar Gabhála (The Book of Invasions / The Book of the Taking of Ireland). In the myth Cessair is the grand-daughter of Noah and daughter of Bith. Bith is refused passage on The Ark and so Cessair builds three ships to seek out a new land. Each ship is crewed by fifty women. During the seven year journey two of the ships sink but the third containing Cessair, fifty women, her husband Fintan, her father Bith and her brother Ladra arrive in Ireland. She takes the first step on Irish soil. Zoë explores this myth, the taking of Ireland and how becoming at one with the natural world becomes essential to survival. As part of this podcast writer Siobhán Mannion writes a fictional account of this first step and what Ireland might have looked like to Cessair and her crew. Zoë also takes a walk across Dublin city with Siobán to discuss her relationship with nature, walking, writing and routine. Siobhán Mannion's stories and essays have appeared in Irish and international publications including Granta, Winter Papers, Banshee, Eighteen Bridges, Stand, The Moth, The Long Gaze Back: An Anthology of Irish Women Writers and Galway Stories: 2020. She has written plays and non-fiction pieces for radio, and her work has appeared in translation. Her honours include an Arts Council Literature Bursary, a MacDowell fellowship, two Hennessy Awards, and two New York Festivals Radio Awards. She lives in Dublin, where she worked for many years as a radio producer in RTÉ and is now completing a collection of stories. To Hell, to Connacht or to the high seas. This week we dissect the folklore from fiction as we discuss the life of legendary pirate Queen of Connacht, Granuaile in part two of our pirate special. *Correction: In this episode Shaunna mistakenly says Grace O'Malley lives until the age of 93 when in fact she lived to 73, (which is still pretty astonishing considering the life she lived). An overview of the county and town of Donegal. Narrator: Mary Murphy A proper introduction and how to use this guide can be found in the next audio piece called 'Donegal's Hallowed Sites'.  This audio clip with an overview of County Donegal comes from Mary Murphy whose silky voice is peppered throughout the tour. Mary tells us about the origin of the name as well as who the Conal was in Tirconaill, who the foreigners were in the 'Fort of the Foreigners' translation of Donegal and a bit about Donegal Town itself, home to the O'Donnell clan and where the Annals of the Four Masters was mainly written. The Donegal crest's colours of green and gold corresponds to its green hills and many golden strands. The shield and red cross relate to King Conall and St. Patrick's early pact. Patrick needs no introduction, but Conall might.  Conall Gulban (died c. 464) was an Irish king and eponymous ancestor of the Cenél Conaill or kindred of Conall, who founded the kingdom of Tír Chonaill in the 5th century, comprising much of what is now County Donegal. He was the son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. He is significant in the history of Irish Christianity as he was the first nobleman baptised by St. Patrick, thus opening the way for the conversion of the ruling classes of Ireland.  According to 'Life and Acts of Saint Patrick', St. Patrick lifted his sacred crozier, the 'Bachall Íosa' and upon hitting Conall's battle shield with it, caused the royal shield to become engraved with the sign of the Cross. St. Patrick then gave Conall the popular Latin motto of the ancient Roman Emperor Constantine "In Hoc Signo Vinces", meaning 'In this sign is your victory'. By following the sign of the Cross and Christ's teachings, victory to the kindred of Conall was assured from that day onwards. Audio taken from Donegal's Hallowed Sites on the Racontour Archive.
