E66 The Fifth CourtHosts Mark Tottenham BL and Peter Leonard BL have a most entertaining discussion with retired District Justice, Olann Kelleher, about his fourteen years on the bench in Cork (as well as being on the bench for the historic Munster V All-Blacks match in 1978 - including a classic one-liner from legend Moss Keane). The former judge says there are too many loopholes in our drink/driving laws and they need to be updated. Continuing on the alcohol theme his greatest shock was the abuse suffered by A&E nurses and other staff who are regularly attacked by drunken patients. He cites the case of one nurse who was so traumatised by being attacked that she'll never work as a nurse again. He is hugely concerned about the amount of cocaine use in Cork and he explains how he dealt with 'first time cocaine' cases along with the Probation Services. And he refers to the harassment of Cork legend Roy Keane by locals, a subsequent court case and the wisdom of the Number 16 shirt wearer and why he insisted on bringing the matter to court, against the wishes of his then employers. His recommendation of a legal book for either professional or lay person is Ruadhán Mac Cormaic's book, 'The Supreme Court' - easily the most recommended book on the podcast. This interview will put a smile on your face. Our interlocutors also review three cases from the Decisis.ie casebookA waste management case and the refusal of a permit to a person deemed not 'fit and proper'A case involving a planning delay that our two barristers felt would have great significance for 'delayed' cases.A case about misconduct in court (accused threw a bible at the judge) and whether the accused could be sanctioned by the Prison Authority. With thanks to Clio.com/ie Hosted on Acast. It was a pleasure and a privilege to talk to Conchobhar Ruadh (B.S.c Psychology), who is a hypnotherapist, meditation teacher, and advocate of the Irish language. His work explores decolonisation and our relationship to an Ghaeilge. Conor is also a Gaeilgeoir raising his child through Irish and currently in his first year of a shamanic apprenticeship. We speak about the healing nature of relearning our native tongue, and the antidote that is to intergenerational trauma, including addiction, shame, and pain. Conchobhar ardently extols the benefits of raising children through Irish. We emphasise renouncing perfectionism and throwing off the shackles of judgement and underconfidence in order to reach your potential. Bainigí taitneamh as! Enjoy it! Lads, I'm really sick. Unfortunately I couldn't produce an episode this week as a result. However, I'm delighted to share with you the audio from a brilliant panel I hosted at All Together Now. It was produced by Vickey Curtis, and features the brilliant Louise Bruton, Ruadhán Ó Críodáin and Pradeep Mahadeshwar. We discussed the meaning of allyship, and heard some truly eye watering stories of failed attempts. It was lots of fun, but I learned a lot too. I hope you'll enjoy. While travelling the world to train and learn about various different kinds of wrestling, Irishman Ruadhán McFadden discovered that Ireland had it's very own style, and he is determined to bring it back. In fact, Irish Collar & Elbow wrestling was once one of the most popular forms of the sport, and his book on the subject has re-awoken a grappling culture that had almost disappeared, and he joined me from his travels in Tokyo to tell me all about it.

Episode 4 - The team celebrates that their podcast, after only three episodes, is already Number 3 in the podcast charts, thanks to listeners sharing the podcast. We start with a review of three cases from the Decisis.ie website including a case around seaweed harvesting and the foreshore. There's also a case involving insurance company Hiscox and the insurance of a play centre. Finally, a High Court judgement about child sexual abuse reporting and the HSE.This week's VIP interview is with Keith Walsh Walsh, solicitor and SC. He brings us up to date on what's happening in his specialist area, family law, including two newer issues, those concerning separations and divorces of same-sex couples where he observes cases involving above average wealth. And while on the subject of wealth, he has also seen a rise in cases concerning couples where one or both parties are working with (typically) tech companies where part of the remuneration is paid in shares which throws up issues of vesting and valuation and timing. We're only on Episode 4 of the weekly podcast but for the 2nd time, in his choice of a book recommendation for those interested in matters legal, Keith recommends Ruadhán Mac Cormaic's book, The Supreme Court. And congratulations to Ruadhán also for having been named Editor of the Irish Times. Please SHARE this podcast with your colleagues. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In his address to the YPN, Ruadhán Mac Cormaic argues that the world, and indeed European citizens, see the European Union through a distorted lens due to the biggest sources of EU news being concentrated outside of the bloc. He contends that this is particularly acute in Ireland due to the strong penetration of the British media. Finally, he considers whether an ‘EU Single Market for News' might offer a possible solution. About the Speaker: Ruadhán Mac Cormaic is Assistant Editor at The Irish Times, a position he has held since 2017. Prior to this, he was a former Foreign Affairs Correspondent, Legal Affairs Correspondent and Paris Correspondent with the paper. In over twelve years with the Irish Times, he has reported from more than 40 countries. His first book, The Supreme Court, was published by Penguin Ireland in 2016.

The story of Supreme Court Justice Séamus Woulfe's attendance at the infamous Oireachtas Golf Society dinner has already taken many twists and turns. This week the crisis deepened with the release of an exchange of letters between Woulfe and Chief Justice Frank Clarke, in which Clarke calls on Woulfe to resign. Woulfe has refused, and the ball is now in the court of politicians who must consider whether to try to remove him. It's a complicated story so, with the help of actors portraying Woulfe and retired justice Susan Denham, who carried out a review of his actions, Ruadhán Mac Cormaic talks us through it from start to finish, and looks at where the story may be headed next. Plus, Pat Leahy on how the politics of impeaching a judge might play out in Leinster House.

The FBI has broadened its investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. But will they find anything conclusive? Expectations are low. Democratic lawmakers are instead focussing on the judge's embittered comments in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, arguing he demonstrated a partisan attitude unsuited to the highest court. Do they have a point? We talk to Ruadhán MacCormaic and Washington correspondent Suzanne Lynch. "One of the most poisonous debates witnessed in twentieth century Ireland" is how historian Diarmaid Ferriter described the run-up to the passing of the 8th Amendment in 1983. Against a backdrop of intense political division, moral outrage and conflicting understandings of how a rebalancing of the rights of a woman and an unborn child would play out in public courts and private lives, the referendum passed with a two to one majority. When the Citizens' Assembly first met in October 2016 to once again examine the abortion question, Ruadhán Mac Cormaic took us back to the early eighties to understand how and why the controversial amendment came about and its legacy in politics and society. With the Citizens' Assembly poised to once again examine the abortion question, Ruadhán Mac Cormaic takes us back to the early eighties to understand how and why the controversial amendment came about and its legacy in politics and society.
On World View this week: one year ago the EU laid out its plan for member states to take their fair share of asylum seekers. Today it is clear the plan has not worked. Ireland has taken only 69 of its promised 2,600 refugees. What's the hold-up? Ruadhán Mac Cormaic reports. In part two, Derek Scally is on the line from Berlin, where Angela Merkel's CSU party had a poor result in elections last week. Her open-door policy for Syrian refugees is blamed for diminished party prospects, and she is moving to reassure voters that matters are in hand. But what does that mean for Germany, Europe and the migrants?
Historian Timothy Garton Ash has called Brexit the “upending of politics and middle-class assumptions in both the developed and the developing worlds". On World View Patrick Smyth and a panel discuss the significance of Brexit in historical terms, Britain's relationship with Europe, and some of the practical implications for Britian, Europe and Ireland. On the panel are Denis Staunton, Suzanne Lynch, Paul Gillespie and Ruadhán Mac Cormaic.
In part one Fiach Kelly reports on Enda Kenny's apparent admission of the state's powerlessness to stop the Kinahan gang, and on the difficulties some Independent members of the new government are having in setting down in their new roles. In part two: in light of comments by President Higgins seen by many as critical of Government policy, Hugh and Fiach are joined by The Irish Times resident expert on the presidency Ruadhán Mac Cormaic and Dr Eoin Daly of NUIG to discuss the limits of the President's constitutional role and whether Michael D Higgins gets a free pass from the Dáil.

The Druid Isle by Ellen Evert Hopman This book, The Druid Isle, is the second in a wonderful Druidic trilogy penned by the famed Druid author, Ellen Evert Hopman, that started with Priestess of the Forest and will end, this year with the final book, Priestess of the Fire Temple. We read a section from Priestess of the Forest in SP06 (go back and listen - it's an amazing story!) in which Ethne gets to meet Ruadh and in this section from the second book, the two and their beloved foster-daughter Aoife depart on a mysterious mission... Priestess of the Fire Temple is due to be published this month (March) and should be available from all of the normal sources, including Amazon. Amergin by The Dolmen THE DOLMEN … A Storm has washed over Europe. Every so often, a band comes out of the Celtic heartlands, takes the musical audience by the throat and shakes it hard. And guess what, it’s about to happen again. The ever popular Celtic Folk-Rock scene in the UK has served up a real rough diamond, THE DOLMEN, a gig-hardened bunch of piratical rebel-rousers from the clan-lands, whose music and live performances have become the stuff of tribal legend, being both unique and very addictive. In 2011 they take this raw energy to mainland Europe. We are very proud to bring you one of their powerful, atavistic earlier tracks, Amergin from their album Songs from the Druids of Stonehenge. You can find out more about The Dolmen on their website at The Dolmen or on our Contributor Page. Lords & Ladies by Kim Thompsett Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Her songs have an escapist quality which evokes the England of old with hints of Celtic, medieval and the classic folk artists of the ‘60’s and 70’s. The album Songs from the Uglee Meadow is due for release on 30th November 2008. The album title is inspired by a serene and beautiful place in East Sussex called the Uglee Meadow. The album features musicians such as Will Summers from Circulus on recorders, flutes and crumhorn and Philip Martin (alias Drohne) on hurdy gurdy. You can find out more about Kim on Myspace, last.fm or our Contributor Page. Ogma's Lament by Dr. Joe Christopher We wrongly ascribe this wonderful sonnet to Professor Joe Christopher instead of the Doctor Joe Christopher in the show. Apologies for this! Joe Christopher of Tarleton, Texas, author of 'C. S. Lewis', Twayne English Authors Series, writes - 'I don't know that the enclosed sonnet is appropriate for the C. S. Lewis Newsletter, for the Church of Ireland may have doubts about a work that has only one brief allusion to Lewis's Christianity and is otherwise pagan. Further, the sonnet has one weak rhyme and certainly counts on a reader having knowledge of Irish legend (for the argument by analogy in the last tercet) and Irish myth. On the other hand, it certainly ties to Ulster!' Find out more about Joe Christopher on our Contributor page. [Source] The Standing Stone by The Bards of Mystic William, the Captain of the Bards of Mystic, says: I was inspired to write that one after personally wandering through the fields of standing stones in Carnac, as well as visiting many dozens of sites throughout north western France. Find out more about the Bards of Mystic on Myspace. More details will also be found on our Contributor Page. Priestess of the Forest by Ellen Evert Hopman This tale is set in third century Ireland where Christianity is sweeping across the Celtic Isles. The book recreates the daily life, magical practices, politics and spiritual lives of the Ancient Celts during this historic turning point. During this time of crisis, love blooms between Ethne, a Druid healer, and her patient, a Fennid warrior. Their passionate affair suffers a tragic blow when Ethne is called upon to become the High Queen. The section we bring to you comes at the beginning of the tale after Ruadh is gored by a boar and becomes the patient of the enigmatic Ethne. You can find out more about Ellen on the Celtic Heritage website, buy her book on Amazon and also find out more about the Order of the White Oak on their website. Let me drink deep the endless cup, The cauldron, the grail - let me sup Deep and my soul be filled. To those behind the face of form, Present since the time of Dawn, Ever-here, everywhere - seen and unseen, I call on you to wipe my soul clean. Let he who ever-chatters be stilled. Let us be one, you and me, The tired and bound, the wild and free. Sing to me in voice pure and clear, Open my mind so my ears can hear. May the words of my pen be truly skilled. You and I have known each other long, Aeons have passed since your first song Filled my heart and drove me to tears. Yet have I grown deaf over the years - Logic and reason have been my shield. Now I hear you sigh in the whispering grass, Hear your laugh amongst leaves as I pass. Let my ears finally hear your voice. Be aware - that I have made this choice At whatever cost, let them be healed. Listener Feedback Arlene We read an email from Arlene and give our thanks for an iTunes review. The human race fights back, yet after every battle the disease responds, adapts, using sophisticated strategies and brilliant ruses to fool its pursuers. The only possible explanation: the epidemic is driven not by evolution but by some malevolent intelligence. Standing against this unimaginable threat is a small group, assembled under the strictest secrecy. Their best weapon is hulking former football star Perry Dawsey, left psychologically shattered by his own struggles with this terrible enemy, who possesses an unexplainable ability to locate the disease’s hosts.
