I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast today is the renowned British artist, Barbara Walker. Born in Birmingham, where she lives and works today, Walker is hailed for her intimate paintings of everyday life, and intricate drawings that not only show power dynamics in Old Master Paintings, but give voice to histories that are all too often erased. From works on paper to paintings on canvas, and large-scale charcoal wall drawings, Walker's work, no matter their scale, is full of empathy, depth, and emotion. Some tell us stories about the state of affairs in Britain, whereas others are much more personal – in the early 2000s, she made her son the subject of her work – which get to the heart of the brokenness in our society, and look at situations from both an artistic and motherly gaze. Research is at the heart of Walker's work, and she frequently goes into public archives, such as for her incredible series, Shock and Awe, which highlighted the contribution of Caribbean servicemen and women serving in the British Army from 1914 to the present day. As well as “Vanishing Point”, which so movingly – and powerfully – explores the visibility and invisibility of Black subjects in Western European collections in our museum collections. Drawing in the Black figures while obscuring the dominant white subjects, Walker encourages the viewer to consider other perspectives beyond the ones that have become the so-called ‘default' in these institutions. But she is also interested in the unknown – as she says: As she says, “I'll go into archives looking for the backstories behind events, individuals or paintings, but I never know what I'm going to find. Making art is about curiosity and it's the same in the archive – I love playing in the unknown.” Very excitingly, a major survey of her work is currently on view at the Whitworth Museum in Manchester, in including her Turner Prize nominated group of portraits, Burden of Proof, a poignant response to the Windrush Scandal – and a newly commissioned printed wallpaper inspired by the Whitworth's collection, that continues her representation of the Windrush generation. -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

Curator Ekow Eshun reframes the Black figure in historic and contemporary art, surveying its presences, absences, and representations in Western/European art history, the African diaspora, and beyond, via The Time is Always Now (2024). In 1956, the American author James Baldwin wrote: ‘There is never time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment, the time is always now.' Heeding Baldwin's urgent call, Ekow Eshun's new exhibition brings together 22 leading contemporary African diasporic artists from the UK and the US, whose practices emphasise the Black figure through mediums such as painting, drawing, and sculpture. These figurative artists and artworks address difficult histories like slavery, colonialism, and racism and, at the same time, speak to contemporary experiences of Blackness from their own personal perspectives. Ekow explains how artists like Kerry James Marshall, Amy Sherald, and Thomas J. Price acknowledge the paradox of race, and the increased cultural visibility and representation of lived experiences. Beyond celebration, though, The Time Is Always Now follow the consequences of these artists' practices, and what is at stake in depicting the Black figure today. We discuss the plurality of perspectives on view, and how fragmented, collage-like works by Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Lorna Simpson, and Titus Kaphar reconsider W.E.B. Du Bois' understanding of ‘double consciousness' (1897) as a burden, to a 21st century vantage point. Ekow shares the real people depicted in Michael Armitage's surrealistic, religious scenes, whilst connecting works with shared motifs from Godfried Donkor's boxers, to Denzil Forrester and Chris Ofili's dancing forms. We talk about how how history is not just in the past, and how we might think more ‘historically from the present'. Plus, we consider the real life relationships in works by Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Jordan Casteel, - and those shared between artists like Henry Taylor and Noah Davis - shifting the gaze from one of looking at, to looking with, Black figures. Starting at the National Portrait Gallery in London, The Time is Always Now: Artists Reframe the Black Figure travels to The Box in Plymouth from 28 June to 29 September 2024. It will then tour to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and North Carolina Museum of Art in the US into 2025. And as promised, some news - this episode announces my appointment as Contemporary Art Curator at The Box in Plymouth. Join me there in conversation with Ekow on Saturday 29 June, and with Hettie Judah, curator and writer of Acts of Creation with exhibiting artists Barbara Walker, Claudette Johnson, and Wangechi Mutu, on Saturday 20 July. You can also join a Bitesize Tour on selected Wednesdays during the exhibition. And you can hear this episode, and more from the artists, on the Bloomberg Connects app by searching ‘The Box Plymouth'. EMPIRE LINES will continue on a fortnightly basis. Curators Jake Subryan Richards and Vicky Avery locate Cambridge within the transatlantic slave trade, connecting global commodities and local consumption, historic and contemporary art, to reveal how five hundred years of colonial resistance constructed new cultures, known as the Black Atlantic. Between 1400 and 1900, European empires colonised much of the Americas, transporting over 12.5 million people to these colonies from Africa as slaves. It's a history often recounted as something singular, concluded in the past - detached as happening ‘then, and over there' - else told from the perspective of imperial powers. But in their resistance of colonial slavery, people also produced new cultures that continue to shape our present. Black Atlantic, a new exhibition at Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, reconnects the institution's collection, university, and city more widely with these global histories. Installed within the Founder's Galleries, part-funded by the profits from the transatlantic slave trade, it builds on the ‘grandeur and smugness' of the Fitzwilliam's architecture - an intervention which asks whether it is possible to decolonise museums, as imperial infrastructures. Co-curators Jake Subryan Richards and Vicky Avery consider contrasts and continuities between historic and modern works, with contemporary Black artists like Barbara Walker and Keith Piper, Alberta Whittle and Donald Locke commenting on visibility, racism, and colourism, and how visual representations of Black people have shifted over time. Vicky smashes stereotypes about abolitionism, ceramics, and popular culture, from the UK's largest pro-slavery punch bowl, to Jacqueline Bishop's new Wedgwood dinner set. Plus, with a botanical painting from a Caribbean plantation - one of the first signed works by a Black artist of a Black subject - we travel between environments in West Africa, North and South America, and Europe, finding examples of exploitation, agency, and self-liberation - and pathways to future ‘repair'. Black Atlantic: Power, People, Resistance runs at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge until 7 January 2024, the first in a series of exhibitions and gallery interventions planned until 2026. A Bouillabaisse soup inspired hat paraded by the surrealist artist Eileen Agar in 1948 caused raised eyebrows to the passers-by captured in the Pathé news footage on show in the Whitechapel Gallery's exhibition exploring her career. It's just one of many displays showcasing women's art open this summer at galleries across the UK, so today's Free Thinking looks at what it means to put women's art back on the walls and into the way we look at art history. Shahidha Bari is joined by Whitechapel curator Lydia Yee, by Frieze editor-at-large and podcaster Jennifer Higgie, by New Generation Thinker Adjoa Osei, who specialises in studying the contribution of Afro Latin-American women artists, and by the artist Veronica Ryan. Her work runs from a neon crocheted fishing line, to bronze and clay sculptures, and work made from tea-stained fabrics. Veronica Ryan: Along A Spectrum runs at Spike Island, Bristol, from 19 May 19 to 5 September 2021. Her sculptures responding to the work of Barbara Hepworth feature in Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life at the Hepworth Wakefield 21 May 2021 – 27 Feb 2022, and in Breaking The Mould: Sculpture By Women Since 1945 - An Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition, which opens at the Longside Gallery at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park 29 May–5 Sep 2021. Eileen Agar: Angel Of Anarchy runs at the Whitechapel Gallery 19 May - 29 Aug 2021, alongside another focus on women artists in Phantoms of Surrealism 19 May - 12 Dec 2021. Jennifer Higgie's book The Mirror And The Palette: Rebellion, Revolution And Resilience - 500 Years Of Women's Self Portraits is out now, and she presents a podcast, Bow Down: Women In Art. Adjoa Osei is a New Generation Thinker on the scheme run by BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to work with academics to put their research on radio. Ever met someone whose life story has so many twists and turns that it seems almost too incredible to believe? Barbara Walker would qualify to be in that exclusive club.Host Erika Seamayer-Williamson sits down with Barbara to talk all things about overcoming enormous challenges. They met several years ago at their church while serving/volunteering. It's clear Barbara, who spent years in law enforcement in the Illinois prison system, is a fighter and refuses to let obstacles arrest her faith.   One of Barbara's biggest challenges of learning how to lean on God's amazing grace has been in the area of parenting. After raising her own  five children, Barbara took custody of her six grandchildren after her 32-year-old daughter died of AIDS (contracted from her husband who was a download brother, as Barbara called it). During the entire ordeal, local football legend Deion Sanders heard about Barbara's story and provided incredible support for her family. This episode unpacks that divine appointment blessing for Barbara's life.Barbara currently serves as head of security at Trinity Church (Cedar Hill, Texas). Continuing my monthly offerings of insight and inspiration from my book, Goddess Calling; Inspirational Messages & Meditations of Sacred Feminine Liberation Thealogy, meaning Goddess values set us free, recommended by Selena Fox, Isidora Forrest, Barbara Walker, Z Budapest and Jean Houston - foremothers and wayshowers all, today's sharing is Chapter 18, titled Goddess Notices...detailing several real instances where Goddess manifested and showed She noticed what was being done in service to Her.  Whether you recognize Goddess as deity, archetype or ideal, I think these stories of Goddess coming through and showing Herself will be of interest.  For more information on my work and writings, check out my website, karentate.net

Continuing my monthly series of sharing insights from my book, Goddess Calling: Inspirational Messages & Meditation of Sacred Feminine Liberation Thealogy, recommended by Jean Houston, Z Budapest, Barbara Walker, Isidora Forrest and Selena Fox....today's inspirational message is as relevant today as when it was written....Harmony from Chaos, followed by a meditation.  We do have a path forward and it's a state of mind, not necessarily one gender saving us from the other.  The state of mind is liberation thealogy...values of the Sacred Feminine that can help us save the world and build anew.  In today's troubling times, perhaps these words might give direction or solace.  Please enjoy.

Beloved Foremother Barbara Walker will discuss her newest book, Man Made God which will include topics such as what's the basic excuse for oppression of women by all three so-called Abrahamic patriarchal religions. How does patriarchal religion foster sexism, fanaticism and intolerance. Why does the biblical god demand blood sacrifice before granting forgiveness of sin. What led Barbara to the conclusion God is not good. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUR also a favorite return guest is Rev. Patrick McCollum discussing Goddess Thealogy Rising. Patrick will bring us up to date on the court case he's been waging for Tier Two religions not afforded the same rights at Tier One religions in our country. And all the incredible latest developments that have happened since he received the prestigious Mahatma Ghandi award.
