This St. Patrick's Day, Paul and Dan discuss the rich history of Irish myths, legends, and stories in the D&D game. From Druids and Bards to the Banshees and Firbolg, what are some of the best ways to spice up your game with inspirations from the Emerald Isle? Irish mythology is the body of myths indigenous to the island of Ireland. It was originally passed down orally in the prehistoric era. In the early medieval era, some myths were transcribed by Christian monks, who heavily altered and Christianised the myths. Irish mythology is the best-preserved branch of Celtic mythology. The main supernatural beings in Irish mythology are the Túatha Dé Danann ("the folk of the goddess Danu"), also known by the earlier name Túath Dé ("god folk" or "tribe of the gods"). Early medieval Irish writers also called them the fir dé (god-men) and cenéla dé (god-kindreds), possibly to avoid calling them simply 'gods'. They are often depicted as kings, queens, bards, warriors, heroes, healers and craftsmen who have supernatural powers and are immortal. Prominent members include The Dagda ("the great god"); The Morrígan ("the great queen" or "phantom queen"); Lugh; Nuada; Aengus; Brigid; Manannán; Dian Cécht the healer; and Goibniu the smith. They are also said to control the fertility of the land; the tale De Gabáil in t-Sída says the first Gaels had to establish friendship with the Túath Dé before they could raise crops and herds. They dwell in the Otherworld but interact with humans and the human world. Many are associated with specific places in the landscape, especially the sídhe: prominent ancient burial mounds such as Brú na Bóinne, which are entrances to Otherworld realms. The Túath Dé can hide themselves with a féth fíada ('magic mist'). They are said to have travelled from the north of the world, but then were forced to live underground in the sídhe after the coming of the Irish. The The Lebor Gabála tells of a series of mythical Irish migration stories, which can be traced back to a very early date. Its history is somewhat complex and, although fascinating, it is not an 'easy read'. So, join Chris and Jamie as they share Jamie's new telling. 'The Writing of The Takings'. Jamie has created an entertaining and highly amusing interpretation, which gets to the heart of how and why these mythical migration stories were so valued. Read the full version of The Writing of the Takings. Highly recommended! Jamie is planning to record an audio version of 'The Writing of the Takings'. I will add a link to this as soon as it is available. Meanwhile, find out more about Jamie's writing on Jamiemadden.org About the Lebor Gabála / The Book of Invasions or the Book of the Taking of Ireland The ‘Book of Invasions' (‘Leabhar Gabhála' in modern Irish) is not the name of a specific manuscript. Rather it is an origin legend of the Irish people that exists in many variant versions, in poetry and prose. The origins of the tradition can be traced to the seventh century, although the earliest surviving manuscripts are much later. The story was extensively reworked in verse form in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Over time, prose versions were derived from the poetry, and additional historical material was added. It was revised again in the seventeenth century by the team of historians known as the Four Masters. It continued to be accepted as a plausible story of the settlement of people on the island of Ireland long after that. The core of the story of the peopling of Ireland was built on top of biblical traditions. It begins with Noah and the Flood, and Noah's granddaughter Cesair (she does not feature in the Bible), who was said to be the first to arrive in Ireland. The next wave involved the Parthalonians, descendants of Japhet, son of Noah, but they succumbed to plague. The third wave of settlers, descendants of Nemed, were vaguely related to the Parthalonians. The Nemedians were eventually defeated by the Formorians. Some Nemedians later returned from Greece as the Fir Bolg. They, in turn, were replaced by the Tuatha Dé Danann. A second strand traces other descendants of Japhet, including Fénius Farsaid and his grandson, Goídel Glas (the term ‘Gael' is traced to him). Later, Breóghan, descended from Goídel Glas, viewed Ireland from a tower in Galicia on a clear night. His grandson, Míl Espáine, went to Ireland, where he defeated the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Clann Mhíleadh (‘sons of Míl'), Ír, Éibhear and Éireamhón and their descendants, became established in Ireland. From https://www.ria.ie/leabhar-gabhala-book-invasions

For those so inclined to investigate further, we offer the following transcript in Irish with English translation:   Mhair an Tuatha De Danann ar oileáin thuaidh na cruinne agus rinne siad staidéar ar sheanchas, ar asarlaíocht, ar ealaíon na ndraoí agus ar dhraíocht chailligh, go dtí gur sháraigh siad na saoithe págánach. Rinne siad staidéar ar stair diamhair  agus ar eolas rúnda na cheithre chathair: Falias, Gorias, Murias, agus Findias.   Tánaig an Tuatha De Danann go hÉireann le cabhlach mór chun í a thógáil ó na Fir Bolg le fórsa. Nuair a shroicheadar Chorcu Belgatan (glaotar Conmaicne Mara ar an áit sa lá atá inniu ann), dhódh siad na báid ionas nach mbeadh siad i n-ann teitheadh. Chlúdaigh an deatach agus an ceo a tháinig ó na báid gach aon ní timpeall orthu, agus mar sin tá sé ráite gur ar scamaill ceobhrán a tháinig siad.   The Tuatha De Danann were in the northern islands of the world, studying occult lore and sorcery, druidic arts and witchcraft and magical skill, until they surpassed the sages of the pagan arts. They studied occult lore and secret knowledge and diabolic arts in four cities: Falias, Gorias, Murias, and Findias.   The Tuatha De came with a great fleet to Ireland to take it by force from the Fir Bolg. Upon reaching the territory of Corcu Belgatan (which is Conmaicne Mara today), they at once burned their boats so that they would not think of fleeing to them. The smoke and the mist which came from the ships filled the land and the air which was near them. For that reason it has been thought that they arrived in clouds of mist.

The Firbolg represents an archetype that's been around a long time, and is a blast to play—the gentle, nature-loving giant. And they can offer so much more than cliches about hippies or becoming the "shaggy" of the group.

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The most famous group of people that came to Ireland are the people of the Goddess Danu. Known as “God like” or to have the powers of the Gods, this chapter of Irish Myth from the Mythic Cycles, offers us the first cast of characters we come back to again and again. Get to know the name of the father God, the Dagda, or the druid Bírog of the mountains, because these characters will reappear again and again in Irish stories. They burned their boats upon landing on the shore of the island, to show they were here to stay. These were the people who went north. We know little of their journey, or who exactly the Goddess was they took their name from, but we do know they learned magic in the northern islands, and brought back four treasures with them. With new found power, they felt entitled to the land… but the land was not empty. The Fir Bolg would have to figure out what to do with these newcomers. And to do that they sent the greatest warrior they had, Sreng. But he did not expect what awaited him when the smoke of the burning boats cleared. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our post-show chat coming out this Sunday. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the Fir Bolg, and their courage and endurance. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The fourth group of people to come to Ireland were the Fir Bolg, descendants of Nemed who were oppressed and enslaved for hundreds of years, keeping their faith alive by telling stories of a promised homeland. We saw a modern resonance in the desperation of people who cross the Meditteranean in makeshift boats in search of a better life, and talk about the Fir Bolg’s division of Ireland into its five provinces. The Irish were a part of the Celtic tribes that populated most of Western Europe. They developed a mythology that was separate not only from that of the continental Celts, but also their neighbors, the welsh Celts. Today's tale is not much of a creation myth per se. In fact, we covered the Celtic creation myths in episode 8 of this series. What the tale is, and what we cover today, is a history of invasions that eventually led to the establishment of a unique identity of the people of Ireland. Today, we discuss the story of the habitation and development and settlement of Ireland. As far as a creation story is concerned, today's tale is part of an epic that depicts the gradual development of an Irish identity out of the chaos of numerous invasions. Each invasion contributes to the Irish uniqueness, all culminating into the existence of a spectacular tale of Ireland. Our story today comes from Lebor Gabala Erenn, or the Book of Invasions. It is a collection of poems and narratives that speak of the occupation of Ireland, from the times of the creation of the world all the way to the middle ages. The book, and indeed, our story, tells the tale of six invasions of Ireland. The first to land upon the Irish shores were the people of Cessair - who was a descendant of Noah. They were followed by the people of Partholon. Then came the followers of Nemed, and later, the Fir Bolg , the Tuatha de Dannan, and finally, the Milesians. The first four invaders or settlers were either decimated or had to abandon the island. The fifth group came to be revered as the pagan gods, while the sixth, and final, group of settlers represent the Irish people, the Gaels of today. So then, let's hear the tale of the wondrous island of Ireland! I hope you enjoy the stories. If you do, please leave a rating and feedback. Share and subscribe! You may have noticed lately the collection of "alternative facts" which some politicians are using in place of actual history.  While claims made by politicians about historical figures can muddle up our mundane lives, similar claims can have an even worse effect in our spiritual lives.   It can be said that at the heart of any legend is a kernel of truth.  And, it is amazing how much archaeology has done to show legends and revered writings to be accurate history.  And, the internet makes more available in the way of documentation and distance exploration than has ever existed!  This means that most people will be able to read literature of history and/or legends, experience the places where they happened, and also have a more fulfilling spiritual experience.   While many people have been exposed to Biblical Archaeology, other traditions have their ancient times and their tales, writings, sites and ways waiting to be explored and learned.  Heorot, the mead-hall made famous in the tale of Beowulf, for instance, has been located.  The Celtic lands have many sites, and more waiting discovery.  I could go on and on. The result will not only help your journey, but it will also put your spiritual feet on firmer ground due to your adding knowledge to experience! Blessed Be!
