So far, I'm about eighty podcasts in.If someone tells me they listen, they usually follow up with ‘that Frank Lowe one's great' (or ‘sick', depending on their age).I always ask why, but never get a clear answer. They just like it.It was enjoyable to record too, but I left wondering whyhe'd barely mentioned Lowe Howard-Spink.As if he'd only ever worked at CDP.Which was a shame, CDP had been amazing, but they weren't my era.Lowe's was.By the time I'd snuck into advertising the cool agencies were the new ones – GGT, BBH, AMV and the agency that carried Frank's name.Year after year, they won big awards for big clients.Stella Artois, Vauxhall, Tesco, Heineken, I could go on.So I will – Lloyds Bank, Reebok, Weetabix, Gordons Gin, Parker Pens, The Mail On Sunday, Condor, Castella, Tizer, Ovaltine, KP, The Hanson Trust, Birds Eye, Smirnoff, Coca-Cola – they were huge. And all of those clients won awards. And, unlike CDP, they started opening or acquiring offices across the globe. But it wasn't always this way.In 1981, only months after opening their doors, they were in turmoil.Totally dysfunctional.Having swiped a big chunk of CDP's senior talent, they didn't have a plan or structure of how to use them.Who over-saw who?Did anybody over-see anybody?Who was Creative Director?Dave Horry? Alan Waldie? John O'Driscoll? John Kelley? Alfredo Marcantonio? Or the recently added former CDP superstar Geoff Seymour? They found that too many creative leaders meant they had no creative leader.Six months in, Horry, O'Driscoll and Kelley walk.On the way out the door, they advise Frank that he needed a Creative Director and it should be the least-known and youngest of the breakaways – Alfredo Marcantonio.Suddenly, things started to work.We talk about why and the rest of Marc's career, hope you enjoy it.

Managing The Marketing Mix For The Multinational John Deere We work with a lot of John Deere dealers across the United States. What we do for those is create individual marketing plans for each dealer. No matter what the dealer size is from a ten thousand dollar budget all the way up to two million dollar budget, we try to treat all the dealers as if they have million dollar budgets because they like that personal touch and that one-to-one contact with their account people. I have about a team of nine people that report to me. What I do is, I work with each of those folks individually to see what their dealers are looking at and what they need for marketing plans and how we can best give a good strategy to those dealers. We do things like website development, SEO development and direct mail. We also do traditional media as well with email campaigns, radio, television and digital SEM (Search Engine Marketing), social display, you name it we pretty much do it, We also do a lot of reporting analytics which is where I come in more so. My background is in the data analytics department. I've worked at Kaiser Permanente for a few years, Blue Shield of California and Kern which is another marketing agency. Different Things Work In Different Regional Locations In chicago a lot of people are coming through paid search but in other areas more people are responding through direct mail, so we craft a marketing plan for you based on that. Some dealers might have multi-channel marketing strategies whereas others might focus heavily on just social or just paid search. Organic Search Is Still King Organic search is one of our best things because we do a lot of SEO work for our dealers. In looking at how SEO performs, we're able to see the top keywords and we factor in seasonality. John Deere services the farming and construction industries which are very seasonal. Looking at those trends we're able to say let's use these 15 or 20 main keywords this month and then next month we will reassess. Year over year these things trend differently. One month it might be excavators, next month might be skid steers, one month might be riding lawn mowers, another month might be large agricultural equipment. So just look at those different trends we're able to see which month to use for organic and SEO performance and that's what helps our SEO be our top performer. —————————————————————————————————— If you found this helpful, drop a comment below. – Sir Alan Parker.--------------- It seemed a bit over the top. I know he was very good and had a big impact on the business, but ‘single-handedly'? I guess Alan was his mate, so probably bigged him up a bit. Having just spent three hours nose to nose with Frank, I got a taste of what Alan was talking about. I can't think I've met anyone who's as sure of their own opinion. That may read like a back-handed compliment, it's not meant to be. Just that he totally believes in the power of advertising, he's so unwavering that it was striking. Especially today, when nobody seems be very sure of what advertising even is. It's easy to see (and hopefully hear) how generations of clients and agencies would've been persuaded, cajoled or battered into aiming higher. Higher to Frank meant “not just achieving sales success, but ensuring any advertiser entering people's lives uninvited, left them a little better or richer for their visit”. Enjoy being cajoled. ------- This pod first appeared on Dave Dye's series, https://davedye.com/2019/02/14/podcast-sir-frank-lowe/comment-page-1/ (Stuff from the Loft).

Does research help, or hinder creativity? Sir Frank Lowe recalls the successful Heineken campaign that would have never been made, if they had listened to the research. Meanwhile, Judie Lannon and Jeremy Bullmore explore how research can inspire great ads - but only if the right models are used.
In this episode, we take a look at the versatile artistry and soulful "world music" grooves of jazz legend, Don Cherry. He played with Ornette, Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins, Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri, Dewey Redman, Michael Brecker, Frank Lowe and Pharaoh Sanders (and that's just the sax players!). Dig deeper and dig Don Cherry.

This Christmas, Iceland's Christmas ad never made into our screens. The budget retailer's decision to partner with Greenpeace to present an ad condemning the destruction of rainforest habitat was banned by censors for being too political. However, thanks to its banned status, it became one of the most viewed adverts on social media over the festive season. Censors have been accused of curtailing creativity ever since they came into existence. In this episode the History of Advertising Podcast looks at two very different campaigns, one from Cosmpolitan and another from Benson and Hedges, who creatively navigated the censors to deliver provocative adverts.

In the past twenty years there has been an increase in published books by people with LGBTQ parents or featuring their stories. Author and activist Jenny Rain discusses her own journey to telling her story through writing and why sharing queerspawn history is so important for all generations of people with LGBTQ parents and parents themselves. Jenny recently published one of her stories in the new anthology, "Raised by Unicorns: Stories from People with LGBTQ+ Parents", edited by Frank Lowe, a gay dad. It is filled with stories by people with LGBTQ parents.

Given this episode is coming out right around Father's Day, it's fitting that I've got an awesome dad on the podcast with me today. Frank Lowe is the funny guy behind the wildly popular Twitter feed Gay at Home Dad. He has developed a massive following there speaking candidly and humorously about being a gay stay-at-home father, and now about being a single gay dad, too. Frank's also got a great YouTube Channel by the same name, as well as a brand new book called Raised by Unicorns, already an Amazon #1 new release. Frank and I talk about his interesting journey to parenthood through adoption with his former husband. And we also unpack some of the complicated feelings that surround separation and divorce among the cohort of same-sex couples who only relatively recently won the right to marry. Nothing new about being a single, divorced Dad…unless you’re gay. Then all sorts of tricky things happen, that the average person doesn’t think about. Like, He’s gay and has a child? He’s divorced and gay and has a child? He’s a man in his mid-30’s, 40’s and traveling alone with a child? Or my favorite,…

Episode 17 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with bassist William Parker, whose latest album, the 3CD set Voices Fall from the Sky, is out now, and his wife Patricia Nicholson, who runs Arts For Art, the organization that has put on the Vision Festival every year since 1996 and has recently expanded to running additional concert series during the fall and winter. William Parker has been a crucial figure on the international avant-garde jazz scene since the 1970s. His first recorded appearance was in 1973, backing saxophonist Frank Lowe on the album Black Beings, and he’s made literally hundreds of records since then. He was the bassist in the David S. Ware Quartet for something like 20 years, and continued working with Ware until the saxophonist's death in 2012. He played with Cecil Taylor in the 1980s and 1990s, he was the bassist in Matthew Shipp’s trio for decades, and has played with almost everyone else you’ve ever heard of in this genre of music. As a leader, he’s done everything from solo bass albums to massive orchestral projects. Voices Fall from the Sky showcases his work with vocalists. Patricia Nicholson is also a hugely important figure to the New York avant-garde jazz scene, because she runs the annual Vision Festival, a massive, weeklong event that gathers amazing musicians from all across the spectrum, from players who’ve been around since the 1960s to people who’ve just made their debut in the last few years and are keeping the spirit of free music alive. She’s also a dancer and choreographer who performs at the festival every year, and she’s just made her debut as a spoken word performer on the album Hope Cries for Justice, a duo performance with Parker. In this interview, I’m talking to William about what he’s doing musically, and I’m talking to Patricia about her thoughts on dance, and what it takes to run the Vision Festival and all the other programs that the nonprofit Arts For Art, which she leads, put on every year. They’re an extremely ambitious organization working in a city and a cultural environment that offers equal parts apathy and hostility, but what they do is pretty amazing, so I hope you’ll find this conversation as interesting and inspiring as I did.
