Phil Gaimon isn't good at retiring. Or, perhaps he's a bit too good at it. The former pro cyclist pedaled his way through some of the biggest races on top teams at the WorldTour level, but called it quits a few years ago.Problem is, he hasn't quit.Gaimon's YouTube channel chronicles his post-career pursuits, which include KOM-hunting, fun videos with pro cyclists (arm-wrestling with Toms Skujins, anyone?), and organizing his annual event, Phil's Cookie Fondo.Recently, Gaimon embarked on an adventure with Kiel Reijnen and Alex Howes, in which the two pros try to "Kill Phil" on tarmac and gravel over the course of a few days and a lot of miles.Gaimon recounts the journey on this episode of the Slow Guy on the Fast Ride podcast. Gaimon also lends his perspective on what it takes to be a pro these days, and how social media gave him a second career after racing. Theme music: "This Year" by Angela Sheik. Check out her new single, Under the Sun, on Bandcamp.

If you are not caught up to the One Piece manga please beware, SPOILER ALERT! I HAVE IDEAS! Ideas that concern YOU and everyone else in the One Piece community. Since the info drop of a certain "god" in chapter 1018, I figure I reveal who I think "Nika" may be a lot like.... just a certain someone that not only brings smiles to others but to our main protagonist. Peep my logic and I hope you can see it my way. If not I hope you can entertain the possibility. There may be something or nothing here. That's a risk I'm willing to take. like Gaimon. In this week's short podcast, we offer our thoughts on Part One of the new 30-For-30 documentary on Lance Armstrong, and we tell the story of Keegan Swenson--the pro mountain biker who went out and broke Phil Gaimon's Everesting record only four days after Gaimon set it. We also have an extended segment on what's bringing us joy with a special guest star: Candler Budd from Grab the Remote!
On this episode of the VeloNews Tech Podcast, retired pro cyclist Phil Gaimon joins tech editor Dan Cavallari to talk about how Strava has turned into an important tool in Gaimon's post-racing life. Gaimon recounts how he first started using Strava as a way to stay fit and have fun, and how it morphed into something that helped him define a sense of purpose, particularly regarding some of the charitable fundraising he does. Gaimon also chats about his Everesting record, which lasted a few days before he was unseated by Keegan Swenson. Most importantly, Gaimon reminds us all that while Strava is a powerful tool worth spending our money on, it's important to remember the fun part of it all — it's just riding bikes, and that's ultimately what should put a smile on our faces.

Do you know any professional athletes using Cannabis? It is difficult finding one willing to talk about it on the record. Phil Gaimon, once within the top fifty world's best professional road racing cyclists, graciously chats with Kirk on how he uses Cannabis. While cycling as a professional, Phil authored books and pleased his sponsors enough allowing him to start the Worst Retirement Ever in 2016. Listen to why he preferred cannabis over alcohol while racing pro and how, after crashing his bike challenging for the Olympic track team, cannabis helped him sleep better. This episode explores cannabis and sports through the experience of an elite cyclist. Former professional cyclist Phil Gaimon once almost died in a bike wreck, but he never rode the Tour de France. Today, he’s one of the biggest creative forces and personalities in the sport as the author of three books, creator of The Worst Retirement Ever YouTube series and host of The Peloton Brief Podcast. Phil has started multiple businesses and overcome huge odds to succeed. A self-described fat kid growing up, during his pro career he transformed himself into one of the best cyclists in America and clawed his way onto a World Tour team, the designation for teams at the highest level of the sport. In this episode he gives insight into how he has done it, how he has survived the worst moments of his life and where he is headed next. In this week's episode, we have an impromptu book club after reading Phil Gaimon's new book, "Draft Animals." His controversial memoir calls out Fabian Cancellara, and now Gaimon is in the hot seat. The book provides a personal, in-depth — and sometimes depressing — look at what it's like to be a pro cyclist trying to make the WorldTour. We discuss this and other notable cycling autobiographies. Also, Andrew Hood talks about his interview with the legendary Svein Tuft and we critique Movistar boss Eusebio Unzue's wacky idea to introduce substitute riders in the Tour de France. And of course, the podcast wraps up with our usual segments: #AskACat3 and the VN Podium.

Phil Gaimon is retired from pro racing, but he's busier — and maybe faster — than ever. In this week's interview, Fred Dreier talks to the former Slipstream rider about how he left the sport sooner than he'd wanted to. They also discuss what to make of ex-dopers who return to racing. And of course, we also get Gaimon's take on stealing Strava KOMs from the locals. All that and much more!

Phil Gaimon retired from laziness and computer games in 2004, and began riding a bike to lose weight. Years later, against all odds (and his parents’ wishes), he realized his lifelong dream of becoming a professional athlete. After years of amateur bicycle races, of sacrificing stability and living out of a suitcase while working his way through cycling’s minor leagues, he was signed to a team in the Pro Tour, the sport’s highest level. But once there, he found that turning pro didn’t instantly solve his problems. It didn’t make life easy, and it wasn’t quite what he thought. DRAFT ANIMALS, is an insider’s look at the highest levels of professional cycling in the post-EPO (blood doping) era. From breakaway victories, to fending off overzealous water bottle-stealing Belgian fans, to dodging cars at 50 mph while getting your team leader an extra Clif bar, Gaimon pulls back the curtain on life in the WorldTour. But this is more than just a book about bike racing. It tells the story of what happens when you finally achieve the things you set out to, and how it might not be exactly what you expected when you began. Interview Topics: · You got started in professional bicycling much later than most other riders. How did that affect your career, both in terms of expectations and acceptance? · 2013 is seen by many as the “post-doping” era, the year after countless professional bicyclists (including, most notably, Lance Armstrong) were exposed and banned from the sport. How did things change from one year to the next? · Recently, motorized or mechanical doping has made headlines as a new way of cheating the system. How do the rigors of bicycling (and the split-second differences in times) lead to these new forms of doping? · As someone who achieved his wildest dreams, and realized it wasn’t everything he’d expected, what advice would you give to others about following theirs? · Where do you see the sport of cycling heading in the next few years? ABOUT THE AUTHOR Phil Gaimon was a professional cyclist from 2009-2016, including two years in the World Tour with Garmin-Sharp and Cannondale. He’s the author of Pro Cycling on $10 a Dayand Ask a Pro, an ordained minister, amateur comedian, podcaster (host of “The Peloton Brief”), entrepreneur, and host of Phil’s Cookie Fondo. Phil is retired from racing, but still riding his bike for fun and Strava. Twitter @philgaimon | http://philthethrill.net/

Listen for short interviews with former Redlands winner and recently retired Phil Gaimon, current US criterium champ Brad Huff (Rally Pro Cycling) and Jelly Belly's Sergei Tvetcov.
