A Non-Profit On a Mission To Revolutionize The Golfing Experience - Nick Darby with Get Golfing

It's funny how random, accidental conversations morph into something special. While returning from The 2024 PGA Show Demo Day in Orlardo on a shuttle bus, host Colin Weston sat beside a young man and he asked how his day went. That young man was Nick Darby, who was attending on behalf of Get Golfing which is a UK non-profit that acquires and revitalizes distressed golf properties. After an engaging bus ride conversation, Colin asked Nick if he would tell the Get Golfing story on The ModGolf Podcast. Fast forward and here we are. We hope you like this inspiring episode as much as we enjoyed making it. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/4H5UvFVK.jpg (https://www.youtube.com/@modgolfpodcast/videos) "Here in the UK we have this issue which I don't see too much globally, where lots of our golf courses are either financially suffering while the land value is increasing. So many golf courses are being bought up, slabbed over with cement and housing estates are being built on them. We are on a mission to change this trend." "So on the charity side of it, we reinvest and try to acquire golf courses that are going under and put money back into them, back into the communities and really get that golf course to prosper." Join our ModGolf Mission to make golf more innovative, inclusive and fun! As the creator and host of The ModGolf Podcast and YouTube channel I've been telling golf entrepreneurship and innovation stories since May 2017 and I love the community of ModGolfers that we are building. We thought "If we don't do this, these golf courses are going to be given to somebody else not necessarily to grow the game of golf." Then we just put our hearts and souls into it." https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/8_k2-5ac.jpg "It sounds like it's an impossible task because we've only ever operated one golf course to then knowing that we had another golf course that was 300 miles away. It was exhilarating. It was fantastic to go into these golf clubs and say to the staff "You've still got a job, come and work for us. It's going to be fantastic." And then also tell the members of the golf club. "Hey, you're not going anywhere. You're going to stay right here. Your golf course is going to stay open". And that feeling is just incredible and that's why we do what we do. It's because golf is just so important and we owe so much to the game of golf and this is how we give it back".... In a special edition of the podcast, we caught up with Gavin Moynihan ahead of his long-awaited return to action at this week's Magical Kenya Open. After a torrid time of missed cuts last season, the 26-year old is hoping that a fresh start on the Challenge Tour in 2021 can spark his safe passage back to the Promised Land of the main European Tour. We touched on the highlights of Gavin's professional career to date, including his GolfSixes win alongside Paul Dunne and an agonising near-miss for a hole-in-one that would've seen him drive home in a €150,000 BMW from the French Open. He also reflects on the difficulties of darker days on Tour and a winter's work in Dubai that he hopes will stand him in good stead for a fast start to the new campaign. We hope you enjoy the listen. Let us know what you think.

Shane offers a broad base of knowledge and understanding of golf, having been involved with the game in a variety of capacities. In 2006, he spent the summer working as a caddie at the historic St. Andrews links course in Scotland and also later caddied in tournament events for LPGA tour professionals Irene Cho and the late Erica Blasberg. A low-single-digit handicap player, he also competed on the mini-tour circuit for a short time between 2007 and 2008. Shane also hosts his weekly podcast "The Clubhouse With Shane Bacon (https://art19.com/shows/the-clubhouse-with-shane-bacon)". We highly recommend giving it a listen (after you've binge-listened to every single ModGolf Podcast episode, of course). Bacon began his coverage of the sport as a writer for the AOL FanHouse website in 2008. He held that position until 2010 when he began contributing to the Yahoo Sports Devil Ball Golf blog and later accepted a full-time writing position for the CBS’ Eye on Golf blog in 2011. In 2012, he assumed editor duties for the Yahoo Devil Ball site, penning columns, conducting interviews with tour professionals, covering tournament action and producing video content, while also planning the blog’s editorial calendar and overall content strategy. In 2014, he made his first foray into television, joining DirecTV’s upstart “Back9Network,” a golf and lifestyle cable channel, as an on-air personality. During his time with Back9, he co-hosted the show, “The Turn” from the channel’s Connecticut studios. An experienced digital scribe and former mini-tour competitor, Shane Bacon is now a golf reporter for FOX Sports. In his dynamic role, Bacon serves as an on-course contributor during the network’s digital presentations of all eight USGA Championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and U.S. Senior Open, in addition to producing columns and videos throughout the year for FOXSports.com. On this episode Shane and Colin talk about: • Shane's early days as a sports blogger and his first time is front of the camera at Back9 Network. • his 'big break' opportunity to join the FOX Sports Golf team. • why Shane had to "had to readjust my thinking about golf" when considering the future of the game. • European Tour CEO Keith Pelley's Golf Sixes, match play and team events. • how other sports love the underdog but golf fans do not. • what young people think about Tiger Woods. • the innovative culture at FOX Sports that gives their golf staff the creative freedom to experiment. • that people need to remind themselves golf is an escape and we play to get away from everyday life. • Shane's desire to publish a golf game pamphlet (Shane’s Games perhaps?) as a fun, social alternative to 18 hole stroke play.
