Pary Bell's CV is stacked with leadership roles at some of Canada's biggest media companies including, but not limited to, the CBC, Rogers Media, and TorStar. He's made a career of leading organizations through digital transformation, but his original plan didn't involve building teams, managing people, and navigating internal politics—Pary's first love was drawing. It was difficult making it as an artist, and Pary made the choice to enroll in the Communications & Multimedia program at Centennial College. Kevin Bartus is a terrible employee—those are his words, not mine. But that's OK because he's a very successful entrepreneur. Kevin is the President and CEO of Ideon Media—Canada's largest digital rep firm, responsible for monetizing Canadian ad traffic for brands such as VICE Media and IGN, to name a few. Ideon also owns and operates several sites including SavvyMom, 29Secrets, and AmongMen. A Chicago native, Kevin was quite the academic in his youth. He found subjects like math easy, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he graduated from both MIT and Harvard. He moved into consulting after university and then founded Blue Spark—a company building websites for TorStar and Rogers. Despite an exit and the chance to lead Rogers Media's foray into digital advertising, Kevin had the itch get back out on his own. He saw the success Olive Media enjoyed in the rep space, and decided to emulate their business model with Ideon Media. **Subscribe to the Media People Newsletter** mediapeople.beehiiv.com/subscribe **Listen & Subscribe** www.mediapeople.ca www.youtube.com/@mediapeoplepodcast www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

He looks back at his time running Rogers Media and why this new role was likely the only way he would come back home. Later, Kelly Hrudey (56:35) looks at the stretch drive for the playoffs and why he can't help but cheer for Crosby and the Penguins. Finally, Arash Madani (1:17:09) on March Madness, Zach Edey winning his 2nd straight Player of the Year Award and Vince Carter being named to the Basketball Hall of Fame this weekend officially. Kensington Grey is an influencer management agency rooted in diversity, representing an extensive roster of black and brown creators. At the heart of the agency is President & CEO, Shannae Ingleton Smith. Born in Toronto, raised in Calgary, Shannae studied finance and economics in university. But marketing was her real passion. There wasn't an option to major in it, so Shannae filled her electives with every marketing class available. She moved into finance after graduation, but quickly pivoted into media sales with Mediaplanet Publishing. Shannae moved to Rogers Media, holding sales roles at MacLean's Magazine, Elevate Multi-Platform Sales, and leading a multi-million-dollar territory of education-based clients. It was during this time that the seeds for Kensington Grey were planted. Shannae ran a private Facebook group providing business advice to black influencers. She noticed that opportunities were slim, and their services were undervalued. She saw an opportunity to rectify this, and Kensington Grey was born. **Subscribe to the Media People Newsletter** mediapeople.beehiiv.com/subscribe **Listen & Subscribe** www.mediapeople.ca www.youtube.com/@mediapeoplepodcast www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

We start things off by discussing Shohei Ohtani's monster deal and the intricacies of the contract before figuring out just how close the Toronto Blue Jays were to getting the Japanese phenom north of the border. We also get into the voting process, of which Steve was a part, for the Northern Star Award for Canada's Athlete of the Year before shifting our focus to media distribution in Canada. We take a look at one of Steve's recent articles regarding Rogers Media and their NHL rights going forward.

Learn more at Elevent.co Keith Pelley is inarguably one of the most accomplished sports media and sports marketing executives in the world. Appropriate given his role as CEO of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour and headquartered in the UK) takes Keith across the globe as he stewards the 2nd largest professional golf tour on the planet. Impressive doesn't begin the describe his career journey – with stints as president of TSN, the Toronto Argonauts, Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium, Rogers Media, and now the DP World Tour. I've had the pleasure of working with him - and for him - on a few occasions and can say without hesitation that he possesses an unrivalled work ethic and passion for whatever he does. For this episode, I caught Keith at his home outside London, England to discuss his career journey, his current mandate at the DP World Tour and some of his many career accomplishments – i.e. Taking the former European Tour to new commercial heights through partnerships with DP World and Rolex… creating Friday Night Football at TSN… taking on the monumental task of producing and commercializing the coverage of the 2010 Olympics, and more. A few fun stories sprinkled in as well. It was a fun, inspiring and insightful chat. I hope you enjoy! How do we explain what resonates with us and what doesn't? And what is resonance, anyways? You may—or may not—be surprised to learn that the word resonate actually refers to the creation or experience of a deep, full, and reverberating sound … which brings us to today's very special guest. For this week's show, we speak to May Globus, a sound therapist with an amazing podcast of her own, called The Craft. If you're wondering what a sound therapist does, imagine being enveloped by sound to the point where it feels like it's washing over you (which is maybe why the experience is also referred to as a sound bath). About May Globus: Inquisitive is May Globus' natural state. A former fashion, lifestyle, and culture journalist, she was Vancouver city editor for Rogers Media's female-focused digital lifestyle magazine Sweetspot. She's worked both with and within social impact companies across North America, including TEDactive, rennie group, Westbank, the Clinton Giustra Enterprise partnership, and more. Out of deep, inspired conversations she has on the regular with the creatives and entrepreneurs in her world, her podcast The Craft came into being. May is currently a certified sound therapist with her own Vancouver-based practice, oto healing. Her clientele include corporations and their teams, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, creatives, architects, musicians, expectant mothers, and more. On this episode we chat about: What sound therapy really is (the practice, history, and science of it) Why May decided to cultivate a routine of sound therapy—and offer it to others How the experience of sound therapy creates resonance to support our healing The importance of letting go and truly feeling what comes up in our bodies and minds Why creativity plays a role for healing in childhood AND adulthood How spoken mantras can help soothe and calm our nervous system Why human connection is vital to our health Did you know sound healing is supported by both quantum physics and biochemistry?! May tells us about that too! And then I have these moments where I think I should tell you what I'm feeling. And maybe I'm just feeling super emotional. I had a moment the other day when I was just wanting to come up and tell you how much I care about you and how much I love you and what you mean to me and how much you do for me. And you know what? I didn't do it. I'm telling you that I thought about it then. So you're listening now. But in the moment, I didn't think about that. Now I have so many opportunities to tell you that, whereas with because I'm always because you always. But with the friends, the men in my life, the male presence in my life.

Pegging, Fetishes & Sex Toys 0:05 You're listening to the sex with Dr. Jess podcast, sex and relationship advice you can use tonight. Welcome to the sex of Dr. Jess podcast. I'm your co host Brandon. We're here with my always lovely other half to Dr. Jess. Hello. How are you? 0:23 I'm amazing. I'm kind of like I'm on top of the world because my work is getting back to normal. I got to host a couple's retreat last weekend over in the UK. And that felt so damn good. I mean, you were there. You know, you weren't at the retreat. But you were at the bar after with me. 0:39 Yeah, and you were definitely in great spirits. And I got to walk around London, which was amazing. Because London is an amazing city. 0:46 It really is a cool city. All the Marvel they took from all over the world made it a beautiful beautiful place a story for another day. But yeah, I'm feeling really good. It feels just I'm sure everybody's having kind of small victories as we slowly very very slowly inch our way back to some normalcy depending on where where folks are living. And yeah, I guess we probably get these glimmers of hope or excitement and then I'm sure there are of course setbacks as well. But I'm also off to Boston tomorrow, or Harvard sex week. 1:18

Making the jump to digital advertising can be challenging, especially if you're coming from the broadcast world. Moving to a new medium while pivoting careers can make it even more difficult. But today's guest, Cheryl Luciani, did just that. Cheryl's the Director of Digital Sales at Star Metroland Media, but it was broadcast buying where she got her start—planning and negotiating multimillion-dollar television campaigns for brands such as Johnson & Johnson and Coca-Cola. She pivoted not only into digital media, but also media sales when an opportunity to cross the aisle with Rogers Media presented itself. Cheryl Luciani sits down to chat with us about growing up in small-town Ontario, her time in college studying desktop publishing & advertising, moving from media buying to media sales, and leading digital ad sales for one of Canada's largest news media companies. www.mediapeople.ca www.instagram.com/vicgenova/

EPIC WIN (OR FAIL): It has been a few weeks of high drama in the world of video games as Epic––the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine––sued Apple after Apple delisted Fortnite from its storefront when Epic violated its terms of service as a developer. It's a complicated, convoluted issue with a lot of far-reaching and severe consequences for those who don't really have a dog in this fight––the players (not to mention the impact it could have on smaller indie developers). Andrew and D. Bethel attempt to unravel all the goings-on in this very interesting and possibly paradigm-shifting event. RELEVANT LINKS: Axon, Samuel. And while that’s a fun parlor game, what makes this less than informative is that the people writing job ads for content marketing positions mostly have no clue what they want, need, or should ask for. They also don’t know the proper terms. And they usually print out a glossary of responsibilities they expect one person to handle alone. But anyway, here’s what the Indeed ads are showing. They’re mostly looking for junior level positions. Then comes senior level positions, then interns, who’ll make $37,000 to $43,000. For senior roles they want to pay $60,000 to $90,000. Um, I can tell you I’m more expensive than that. They want 2-3 years’ professional experience including from the interns who are just coming out of school. Nobody said you had to use logic in your want ads. The skills they want to see are social media, content creation and SEO. The senior positions are going to want you to also be a strategy and management rock star. But overall, content creation is the big ask, across all formats and channels. They want you to be brilliant for their $37,000 investment. But don’t forget the soft skills. Especially interns should be good at going to get soft serv ice cream for the office. No that’s not what I mean by soft skills. We’re talking about those interpersonal skills, a willingness to work hard, and being really good at details. Unfocused lazy jerks will probably have a harder time landing one of those multiple content marketing gigs. https://www.business2community.com/content-marketing/study-reveals-the-skills-you-need-to-get-hired-in-content-marketing-02192325 -Congrats to my pal Steve Pratt and Pacific Content for getting acquired by Rogers Media as this little burst of podcast acquisitions continues. Hey, everyone’s finally realizing that audio is a legitimate format that people like…imagine that. If only we had 99 years of evidence from radio that that was the case! Need more proof? Edison Research is always good about rounding up the numbers in terms of how podcasting is used, how it’s growing, and what kind of people are listening to it…and here are the latest figures from their survey of American listeners. 70% are now aware of podcasts, so that about 197M people. 51% have listened to one, hopefully this one. Nearly a fourth of us listen on a weekly basis. One article pointed out almost 4x more people listen to podcasts weekly than watched the Game of Thrones season premiere. And you may have noticed podcasting didn’t get nearly the media coverage the dragon show did. It’s mostly still guys that listen to podcasts, 36-29%, but I’m not supposed to assign genders so forget that statistic. But it is okay to call people rich and people who listen to podcasts are far more likely to make over $75,000 a year, so you’ve got a nice affluent audience with air pods in just waiting for you. Here’s a big one, podcasting is now the most listened to form of audio at 28%, overtaking AM/FM radio’s 24%. Those DJ’s don’t really play your song requests anyway…the robot says what’s going to be played. This next stat surprised even me, and I try to never allow my eyebrows to go up. 93% listen to most of an episode. Hey I love video, but video can only dream of that level of consumption. People don’t skim, they really listen. Most people listen on mobile, which wasn’t always the case, it used to be desktop. But listening on smart speakers is up to 10% now. Alexa, play me one of NPR’s 12,000 podcasts. So you get it, people like podcasts…but why exactly? They say the number one reason is you can listen while you’re doing something else, it’s the only content format that lets you multitask, which people love to do. I’m changing my oil right now. https://www.convinceandconvert.com/podcast-research/2019-podcast-statistics/ -Facebook continues to confound and confuse. They had their big F8 party where Zuck told us what they’re going to do next and what they’re going to do is redesign the app and website in a big way to be more about groups. Groups will be promoted and integrated in as many places as possible throughout this year, so get ready to adapt to a new look and a new experience. In the app, no more blue bar at the top. The logo and nav icons are there now. The icons for Stories are bigger cause they’re pushing that, but the status update box isn’t as prominent because Facebook doesn’t want to be about that as much now. Zuck wants it to be more about private communication. Private meaning, I guess, groups. They’ll encourage you to join them all over the app. Facebook says groups are among the most "meaningful" ways people use Facebook. I disagree, but I do like to get warned on my neighborhood group if there’s a coyote roaming around. All this also smells like a tactic to get you to connect with more people. Maybe every friend you’ve ever had in your life is already a connection and Facebook isn’t happy you’ve maxed out. So they’ll have a "Meet New Friends" feature so you can connect with people you don’t really know who are in your groups. Which is…LinkedIn! What does this mean if you’re a brand? I’d start figuring out which groups directly relate to what you sell and focus on making educational content that adds to the discussion there. https://mashable.com/article/facebook-app-website-redesign-groups/ -In the true spirit of the Content Marketing Quickie here’s a really quick story that’s impactful and doesn’t really need to be expounded on. How confident do you think marketers are that their content marketing is working? Well I’ll tell you. A mere 10% are confident they’re making an impact. Heinz Marketing shows 63% say their content marketing strategy is either ineffective or only partially effective. The trend ain’t good either, that’s way up from 35% who said that in 2017. There’s a lot broken folks, and it needs fixing, it doesn’t need more baseless hype. https://www.thedrum.com/news/2019/03/15/marketers-lose-faith-the-efficacy-content-marketing That’s the Content Marketing Quickie for this week. Talk about these things with your friends and coworkers, and God forbid you tell them about this podcast so they become listeners too. That would just be crazy. We’ll get caught up again next week.

Daren has a big problem with the way his kids make and eat popcorn. Don't even try to sell him on using kernels popcorn seasoning. Daren has a customer for his cottage who made him second guess where his cottage is located. Dean tells us about “Cannabis Air”, a weed B&B service that provides friendly vacation spots for weed users. Daren gives us his Stanley Cup Final pick and Dean makes fun of the Vegas Golden Knights. The Raptors won a huge road game in Philadelphia yesterday. Kawhi Leonard is the king. Dean thinks the more they win the more likely it is Kawhi is going to stay. Rogers Media purchased a podcast producing company. Dean is convinced it's because Rogers knows radio is lost and they can't deliver honest content.
