On this week's pod: TWO different 54-hole no cut golf events, Taylor at the Grammys, and an absolute legend in NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry. Hosted by Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell. Thanks to the weather, and the new Signature Event schedule, Wyndham Clark won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in only 54 holes... but he did shoot a 60. (1:49). Last week's winner, Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, played well at Pebble Beach, and Michael is remembering what happened back when the guys had a heckler call in when they broadcast at Quinnipiac's student radio station (3:50). LIV regularly scheduled 54 hole event included a 59 from eventual winner Joaquin Niemann, while newbie Jon Rahm's team too the W in Mayakoba (5:25). The DP World Tour was in Bahrain, and Dylan Frittelli returned to form to return to the winner's circle (8:08). Blast from the past Anthony Kim has announced his intentions to return to professional golf, and Alex can't believe the former phenom is ready for a return (9:04). Taylor Swift stole the spotlight from the Grammys last night, and Alex has some feelings about the whole affair (10:13). Our YouTube channel has some great stuff on it, including weekly videos showcasing great stuff from last month's PGA Show which will continue to roll out of the next few weeks (13:56). Alex headed to the cinema to see Disney's new Migration, and brings us a review in Tuned In (15:12). The WM Phoenix Open parties on this weekend, and Scottie Scheffler looks to claim a 3-peat (16:28). This week's guest is NBA legend and Hall of Famer Rick Barry. The former Finals MVP, 8x All Star, and 4x World Long Drive Champion, is also an avid pickle baller. Rick chatting with Alex live on the PGA Show floor last month, and shares why he loves pickle ball, what it was like to dunk on Bill Russell, and his favorite golf course (18:59). This Sunday is the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, and all we really care about here is the prop bets (49:49). As we #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex shares his football spread, which Michael thinks is a little too pun-ny (55:35). Support our friends! Andy and Brendan are back on the horse! This Monday episode is slightly delayed, but it's here and what it lacks in substance, it makes up for in amusement, hopefully. They begin with many thoughts on Jordan Spieth, the win at Harbour Town, his resume, and some ridiculous comps to Hall of Famers, both good and bad. Other Heritage thoughts revolve around Dylan Frittelli's penalty for hitting a ball out of the trees and enhanced scrutiny on Patrick Cantlay. The results segment leads us down the path of discovery on KFT pro Pontus Nyholm, now nicknamed the Pontoon Boat. News hits on Bryson's surgery, the Shark “chumming” the waters for LIV with some highly-ranked amateurs, and DL3 letting it slip that Phil may now be on the sidelines for the Bethpage Ryder Cup captaincy.
On this week's Fully Equipped, hosts Jonathan Wall, GOLF's Managing Editor for Equipment, Gene Parente, President of Golf Laboratories, and Kris McCormack, True Spec Golf's VP of Tour and Education, talk the ridiculous numbers Cam Champ is putting up with his PING prototype 3-iron, Dylan Frittelli's $4K custom Callaway Apex TCB sand wedge and Pat Perez following Bryson's lead to LAGP graphite iron shafts. The guys then take a deep dive into our ClubTest 2022 robot testing data for TaylorMade's Stealth drivers before the episode concludes with an exclusive interview featuring Vokey Tour rep Aaron Dill.

As you know, we at Verde & Black are trying to chart the history of Austin FC's first year as a club. Part of that entails expanding the focus of the podcast beyond soccer to include other el-ements from the city of Austin, including cultural elements and even other sporting elements. Today, we welcome our first representative from a different sport, professional golfer, Dylan Frittelli. For those of you who don't follow golf, Dylan was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and attended the University of Texas where, as a senior, he sank the putt that won the Longhorns their first National Championship in 40 years. He has been working his way up the world rankings of professional golf ever since, currently ranked number 80 in the world. Dylan is fresh off a fifth-place finish at the British Open. He also finished fifth at the Masters Tournament last November, won the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour in 2019, and had many successes on the European Tour prior to that. In today's episode, we talk about some of the crossovers between golf and soccer, Dylan's enthusiastic support for Austin FC, and his advice for parents with young, sporty kids, as well as what he loves about living in Austin. Tune in today for a fun and informal discussion with pro golfer and Austin FC supporter, Dylan Frittelli!

A long week of Masters podcasts comes to a close with this recap edition following Dustin Johnson’s 5-shot victory. The first big question they ask is whether he’ll remember this or his FedExCup in September more from his remarkable year. Then they get to the more serious, discussing his legacy as perhaps the greatest player of the post-Tiger generation. In conjunction with his process over results essay from earlier in the week, Brendan celebrates the experience of watching DJ play golf for the last decade-plus and the affirmation that a jacket, while not required, brings to that experience. They chat about the Rory tease, the JT disappointment, the sneaky Brooks week, and Bryson getting put in a bodybag by Bernhard. Citing all those names also leads to a debate over who will finish with the most majors, and whether DJ will have a second green jacket here in six months. Dylan Frittelli’s geography expertise is also highlighted. A tweet from Alan Shipnuck on the “wear and tear” conditioning at Augusta showing this week prompts a closing segment on how the course played and what Andy will remember most from this 2020 edition. Thanks to all for a fun week and for supporting the daily podcast format!
Brendan and Andy are joined by Hurricane Shane Bacon for this Saturday evening podcast on the Masters. They discuss Dustin Johnson’s four-shot 54-hole lead, how impressive it’s been, and how it’s likely to bag him his second major. But they also go to the dark places in their minds and try to write a horror story about how exactly it could go bad over the final 18 holes. The entire episode is a ramble, a mishmash, a potpourri of inanity and analysis on all that’s happened so far at the Masters before fielding some listener questions. Thanks to Shane for joining us!

Sunday July 14 will not be a day that's easily forgotten. How can it? When it had the longest and possibly top two most thrilling Wimbledon men's final of all time, contested by the grass court king Roger Federer and modern great Novak Djokovic? And what about the Cricket World Cup final between England and New Zealand that was tied after 50 overs had been bowled for either team? It then went to the super over and still nothing could separate the teams. And so England won by the most dubious of technicalities. The was a glut of other sports on the go at the same time on the same Sunday as Lewis Hamilton made Formula One history and Dylan Frittelli stole the show at the John Deere Classic. And off course, the Africa Cup of Nations giants separated themselves in the semifinals as Nigeria lost to Algeria and Senegal ousted Tunisia. It was a crazy day and one we look back on fondly, We also capture the Springbok mood as the national men's rugby team begins its first steps towards the Rugby World Cup 2019 trophy in Japan, when they take on Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday. We hear from Bok head coach Rassie Erasmus about his plans to split the squads into the traveling and non-traveling contingent. Plus we have a special guest from the Highveld Lions, who tells us the difference in coaching styles between Geoff Toyana and his successor Enoch Nkwe.

This Monday episode begins, apropos of nothing, with a story about Monty. Then we move to the heartland and weekend at the John Deere Classic. We discuss Dylan Frittelli’s career arc and the last player to win on Tour while wearing glasses. We also get into the JDC’s spot on the schedule and if it has been unfairly squeezed. We then move over the Scottish Open and the absolute pillowfight of a playoff, as well as one participant’s odd hat design. Beef Johnston’s last-minute qualification for The Open, as well as his recent disclosure that he’s been battling depression is discussed at length. The no-cut Senior Players meant there were going to be some big numbers at the bottom of the leaderboard, so we go fishing down there for some interesting stories and catch a few. To begin Open week, we go over some vocal critics of Tiger’s scheduling approach, Phil’s “reset” and consistently odd wardrobe, some early course intel at Portrush, and Brooksy perhaps feeling slighted by not being the betting favorite.
