Wes Forester, PGA Director of Golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee Discusses Richland—The Seventh Course on Property

Wes Forester, PGA Director of Golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee joined Rob Thomas on the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss Richland—the seventh golf course at the Greensboro, Ga. property. The new 18-hole layout was created by acclaimed course architect Tom Fazio by combining nine holes from his existing National course with nine all-new holes. This gives Reynolds Lake Oconee two Fazio designs (Richland and The National) along with courses from Jack Nicklaus (Great Waters), Rees Jones (The Oconee), Jim Engh (Creek Club), and two by Bob Cupp (The Preserve and The Landing). The new Richland turns the Bluff nine from the original, Fazio-designed National—with some recent modifications—into holes 1 through 5 and 15 through 18. The new holes, 6 through 14, traverse the peninsula of Reynolds and tumbles down to the Richland side of Lake Oconee. The resulting layout provides plenty of challenge with fescue-lined fairways, numerous bunkers, and dramatic elevation changes. Among the changes to the nine Bluff holes were removing or repositioning bunkers, adding new ones, and combining smaller bunkers to create larger ones. Some greens have been reshaped and/or moved, often bringing the lake more into play. New fescue native areas and low-mow chipping areas were also added on some holes. The new nine utilizes significant elevation change to put an emphasis on club selection and angle of attack. Players will encounter doglegs, a deep valley and big ravine, plus sloping greens and strategically placed bunkering. They'll also have the chance to refresh themselves at a new halfway house – The Turn – between holes 9 and 10. The Turn is a mobile food truck that will serve burgers, sandwiches, wraps and a full array of beverages. Also on this podcast … In the world of golf clubs, resorts, and hospitality venues, delivering unforgettable player experiences is paramount, and effective team communication plays a central role in achieving this. Elle Ferebee, Senior Account Executive at Relay, highlights how the right communication tools not only streamline team interactions but also help transform member experiences into something truly memorable. The Glen Ridge (N.J.) Country Club's planned expansion includes constructing a children's pool and removing 56 trees, raising concerns among neighboring residents. The proposed pool placement—just 13 feet from the property line—requires a variance, as local law typically mandates a 100-foot setback. The Zoning Board of Adjustment was scheduled to review these variance requests Nov. 14. Findings have yet to be announced. One local resident expressed concerns about the impact of the expansion on noise levels in the area. Two years into a significant restoration effort, Asheville, N.C.'s historic Municipal Golf Course, known affectionately as “Muni,” is facing severe setbacks after Tropical Storm Helene. The city was close to completing multimillion-dollar improvements across the course's 18 holes, including upgrades to fairways, bunkers, cart paths, and greens, along with extensive stormwater system repairs. However, after Helene swept through on Sept. 27, the Swannanoa River, which runs beside the course, overflowed to more than 26 feet, submerging the surrounding areas. The resulting floodwaters inundated Muni's front nine holes, with water and debris gushing from drainage inlets, undermining the turf and reversing much of the recent improvement work.

Mike Nowicki is the Director of Agronomy at a famously tough golf course to play and to manage: Victoria National Golf Club outside of Evansville, Indiana. The property was designed by Tom Fazio and built in the late 1990s, with the mandate to make one of the toughest golf courses to play in the world. Most would agree that he accomplished that task. It was built on an old coal mine and much of the property's soil came from deep in the ground. As Mike describes in the podcast, it was not easy to work with. Because the soils were so bad the course started an aggressive top dressing program on fairways, ultimately building a 10-12 inch sand cap which brought its own set of agronomic challenges. Mike has worked on golf courses in “transition zones” like Evansville, Indiana and Richmond, Virginia for most of his career and enjoys the challenge. One of the more interesting points of our conversation was when he shared his stories about how he has had to become creative when it came to building a staff. He has a large contingency of crew from Middle Eastern countries that have proven to be wonderful, although the language barriers were a bit challenging! When listening to Mike, you will get the feeling that he is a “soils” guy and is very intuitive when it comes to getting things done on the course.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.comPodcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Senior Editor Phil Keren speaks with Andy Hughett, General Manager of Whitmoor Country Club in Weldon Spring, Mo., and Chrisitan Dunn, Director of Corporate Development at Concert Golf Partners, about Whitmoor leaders' efforts to offer a family-friendly venue. Concert Golf Partners acquired Whitmoor CC from the Whitaker family in late 2022. Hughett shared an overview of the club's amenities, talked about the steps the club has taken to provide a family-friendly environment, and discussed the feedback he's received from members. He also cast a spotlight on how Concert Golf Partners has supported the club's efforts. Dunn talked about how his company helps clubs like Whitmoor meet its goals. Phil and Editor-In-Chief Rob Thomas also discussed the unfortunate news of a couple golf courses closing, but also highlighted major projects happening in both Texas and Pennsylvania. Blue Fox Run, a 27-hole course in Avon, Conn., and Primm Valley Golf Course, just outside of Las Vegas, have both closed and are for sale. Blue Fox Run's future is precarious, with the auction listing highlighting potential alternative uses such as agriculture, sparking fears that the land could be repurposed. Primm Valley, opened in 1998 and designed by renowned golf architect Tom Fazio, was once a popular destination for golfers. Its closure and sale reflect larger economic and developmental pressures in that geographic area. Jeffersonville Golf Club, owned by West Norriton Township, Pa. (a Philadelphia suburb), is undergoing significant changes. The club invested $11 million-plus in new facilities, including an 18,000-sq.-ft. clubhouse, which has a pro shop, banquet hall, bar, golf simulators, and a restaurant named The Burgess Restaurant and Bar. Several significant reinvestment initiatives are beginning at TPC-Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, where a redesign effort will be led by golf legend Lanny Wadkins. The course's fairways, tees and rough will now feature TifTuf, which is a sturdier grass that stays green deep into the winter months and re-greens earlier than other varieties. The greens will be converted to ultradwarf Bermuda, which will deliver consistent speeds throughout the year and reduce varying fluctuations in play. The existing 20-year-old irrigation system will be replaced with 2,000 new sprinkler heads and a more efficient pump station that will maximize the amount of water distributed in a shorter period of time.

Burning Desire For Perfection Defines Winged Foot's Retired Manager As He Climbs An Apogee

Colin Burns had only 4.5 years of experience in hospitality when he applied for the club manager's position at Winged Foot, one of the most storied private golf clubs in the nation, if not the world. And, after an eight-month search process, he was selected as the club's next general manager – all 31 years ago when Colin had just crossed the line into his thirties. He recalls the president of the club asking him if Colin weren't a tad young for the job. Colin replied: It's not a permanent condition. As we watch a generation of these long-serving club managers move into retirement or consulting – in addition to Colin, we lost Brian Kroh just this month at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida – we are left with a legacy from which we can all learn. Colin's experience is second to none. He managed the US Open during the height of Covid. Five full years of planning all going down the drain as he had to work with the Governor of New York and plan the tournament without spectators as Bryson DeChambeau put his indelible mark on the sport. Now as he joins executive search firm GGA, Colin discusses how every club has a different environment and that search committees, managers and search firms should understand the club's culture first before trying to match a candidate to the club. Do Things with People, Not to Them If you really desire a quality organization you should do things with people, not to them. Burns has put this as his central motif throughout his career. And, with that teamwork sentiment, Colin points out that the hierarchy of a private members club staff doesn't always equate to salary levels. The director of golf, tennis, squash, or even agronomy, may indeed be the highest paid member of staff at many clubs. And what's even more meaningful to club staff members than base compensation? Housing is top of Colin's list and finds it the top of his staff members' list as well. Retiring To a Zenith at Apogee And finally, Apogee means zenith or the highest point of development – and Colin's new project is certainly a zenith of physical land development and a highlight of a continuing, outstanding career. Originally named COO for an incredible project based in Hobe Sound, Florida, now senior advisor, Colin is truly excited about Apogee. It's a three-course extravaganza – or as he calls it “Streamsong on Steroids.” Designers Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, Mike Davis and Tom Fazio and Kyle Phillips have teamed up with financial backing from Dolphins owner Steve Ross. Colin takes us through the plans and the vastness of this incredible project, and how this team is betting on South Florida moving up to Martin County in the very near future beyond Jupiter and toward sleepy Stuart.

He didn't have a great weekend in Spain last weekend, so will look to put that right on this famed golf course, where he already has a runner-up finish to his name.  On the other side of the pond, it's another week in Sin City as a 78-man field has assembled for the CJ Cup. They head to The Summit this week, another Tom Fazio layout, and with little knowledge of the course and a consensus outright selection, we don't have too much to say on this event.  An array of selections in Spain though, it will be great to see one of the best courses take centre stage on the European Tour.  As ever we highly recommend you check out Tour-Tips.com for all the relevant statistics required to make informed selections each week. The eighth episode's guest, Tom Fazio, is well known as one of the most renowned and prolific golf course architect's to ever exist.
Tom has designed over 200 courses, most of them in the United States. He has more courses on the Golf Digest top 100 courses list than any other architect in history and several of those courses are ranked in the top 50. He's designed the course for the 2021 Olympics in Japan, is Pine Valley and Augusta National's go-to guy for additions and renovations, and my favorite fact is that the Best Modern Day Golf Architect poll was discontinued entirely after Tom claimed the award three years in a row. Back in 2008 for my senior project in high school, I had the opportunity to shadow Tom and his team at Shooting Star in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, while it was rock and gravel being shaped by bulldozers - they were still using spray paint to map out each potential hole! Here's a handful of courses Tom has renovated, restored, or redesigned: Augusta National, Bel-Air, Butler National, Caves Valley, Congressional, Firestone, Inverness, Jupiter Hills, McArthur, Merion, Oak Hill, Oakmont, PGA National, Pine Valley, Quail Hallow, Riviera, Sea Island, Shadow Creek, Shooting Star, Whisper Rock, Winged Foot Goes without saying Tom has played a large part in the evolution of golf and course architecture over the past 40 to 50 years. We cover a range of topics from how he got started in his profession, what it's turned into, how he approaches custom crafting each course, and his thoughts on players hitting the ball further than ever and what that means for the future of course design.

Today I'm joined by Tom Fazio, an executive chef with 20 years experience now stirring things up at That Meetball Place in Farming and Patchogue, NY. Tom joined the team during the pandemic and has already brought the menu to new heights. Listen in to find out how he describes what makes for a great dining experience, how he works with his team and the most enjoyable part about being a chef. I've dined at That Meetball Place many times since it's opened and I can tell you the food is now better than it's ever been. My last experience was Chef Fazio's Goodfellas Wine Dinner that took place on July 30, 2020. About Chef Fazio What you'll notice first about our interview is how down to earth and straight forward Tom is. Having just met him, you can tell what a genuine person he is which comes through in his cooking. He jokes about choosing food service as a career, having worked both the front and back of the house for the last 20 years. I decided to ask the most direct question I could which was what makes Chef Fazio passionate about the restaurant business? Tom talks about loving the speed and excitement of it all. You'll have to tune in to hear more about what makes him tick and how he manages his team. This part of the conversation reminded about my conversation with pastry chef Claudia Flemming. New Chef, New Menu After being out of work for 8 weeks, Chef Fazio found a home at That Meetball Place. It usually takes 2 months to write a new menu but that didn't stop Tom from doing it in real time during a pandemic. I got curious about how a restaurant pivots during this challenging time and what Chef Fazio brings to the table for an established restaurant such as That Meetball Place. Many young chefs would start with the menu but thanks to Tom's experience and tenure he really wanted to understand the goals of the ownership group and writing a menu that meets their vision. As a fast casual restaurant, it was missing some trendy fast casual menu items even though they''ll always be known for their meatballs. The classic meatball is made from ground chuck, short rib, pork and veal but you can also get Buffalo Chicken, Lamb, Lobster, Ginger Garlic Scallion Pork and Eggplant meatballs. Not into meatballs? No problem! They are serving up lots of items between the buns, including a Lobster Grilled Cheese, Korean BBQ Beef and a Super Saucy Secret Special Burger Madness Thing! I encourage you to check out their full menu: https://thatmeetballplaceli.com/locations/farmingdale-ny/#menu What Makes for a Great Dining Experience? Tom talks about emotion and food. When a meal can transport you somewhere, like a childhood memory I had when tasting their Baked Pacheri that's when you've had a great experience. Dining out is about value and experience. You don't want a dining experience to get old ore repetitious, that's why experienced chefs like Chef Fazio know how to delight customers all along their food journey. I'm excited to see what's in store for the future at That Meetball Place and I will personally be back time and time again. Keep your eyes peeled for an all inclusive Chef's Tasting Menu coming up in their private room as well. Have you had a great experience at That Meetball Place? What did you order? What should I try next?

TurfNet's Renovation Report is brought to you by Jacobsen and Golf Preservations. This episode's guest is golf architecture expert, golf historian and digital artist/Photoshop wunderkind, Tommy Naccarato. Tommy's life changed forever after a visit to St. Andrews in the early 1990s.  Since that time, he has been an outspoken critic of the deficiencies in the design of many golf courses in the United States, in particular the works of noted architects such as the late Ted Robinson, Jr. and Tom Fazio while providing passionate support of the classic designs of Alister MacKenzie and George Thomas. Tommy's passion for the game is unending. One of the leading voices on Internet golf discussion forums for years talks about how he turned his passion for art, architecture, golf and the digital world into his dream job. You'll hear Tommy's story as it led up to his work wth Gil Hanse on the Rio 2016 Golf Project.  Tommy also has a passion for golf course superintendents. Which comes out in every part of this interview. One tidbit: "Superintendents are our stars, the real heroes of the business…  they lay themselves out on the line every day." And another: "I truly believe in 'death to clueless green committee members'..." Learn more about Tommy by visiting his website, www.tommynacc.com

If there’s a list of the top golf course designers, Tom Fazio’s name has to be near or at number one. We’re proud to have Mr. Fazio on the Callaway Talks Podcast to discuss his approach to designing courses, where he gets his inspiration, and how he grew up in the business. Tom’s story is a fascinating one and probably not what you’d expect.
