Steve Carroll sits down with the esteemed Walker Cup player and captain who has helped bring through some of England's biggest golfing talents. Nigel Edwards has quite the CV. A former World No. 2 as an amateur, he played in four Walker Cups – holing the winning putt at Ganton in 2003 – and skippered three Great Britain & Ireland sides. Indeed, his victorious team at Lytham 10 years ago was the last time we lifted the trophy on this side of the pond. He has played with and against some of the best players in the game and, in his role at England Golf, has managed a team that has nurtured Georgia Hall, Bronte Law and Lottie Wood to name just three. Nigel has some incredible stories to tell from relaying memories of stalwart Walker Cupper Peter McEvoy to how he almost missed one of the finest days in GB&I amateur history. In this episode, Leighton reflects on the recent Strategy Workshops hosted by England Golf, with the support of BIGGA, GCMA, and the Activation Project. He is joined by Matt Draper and Matt Bloor, who helped lead the workshops, to capture the key takeaways and insights shared during the sessions. They are also joined by Simon Gardner and Phil Davis of the Activation Project, who played an active role in facilitating these important discussions. The workshops provided a comprehensive look at how golf clubs can build or evolve their strategic plans. The focus was on using data, consultation, and best practices to create a roadmap for success. The Activation Project shared a structured approach to developing these plans, emphasizing the importance of understanding where your club is now, and where it aims to be in the future. Throughout the discussion, the panel explores how clubs can assess their current position and set realistic, impactful goals for the future. They also dive into the critical question of who should be involved in the planning process, from board members to staff, and how to foster collaboration and ownership across the club. Moreover, the conversation highlights the importance of maintaining momentum and ensuring the plan stays on track, even when challenges arise. Whether you're in the early stages of developing a strategic plan or looking for ways to refine your current approach, this episode offers valuable insights and actionable advice for golf clubs looking to grow and evolve with purpose.   Check out the episode from July 2024 on the DNA report which captures data from clubs https://golfclubtalkuk.libsyn.com/trending-topics-with-england-golf-dna-report   https://www.activationproject.org/ www.englandgolf.org https://players1st.com/   www.golfclubtalk.uk golfclubtalkuk@gmail.com

On the latest Trending Topics we welcome Matt Draper and delve into two vital areas of Golf Clubs - Safeguarding and Legal Compliance.  The common theme through the discussions centre on good governance practices and having the necessary policies and procedures in place.  The safeguarding department at England Golf are there to educate and inform clubs around ways to keep their members safe, but also if an incident were to arise - they are there to help in a practical way.  Petra Duvanna, Safeguarding Lead Officer, explains to listeners what safeguarding is and what clubs need to be aware of and look out for.  She also talks through some examples of breeches and these quite often come down to bullying by others or harrassment by parents.  There's also some great advice on how to report an incident. David Walters, Legal & Compliance Officer, then talks us through some other areas of legal compliance for clubs and how to stay on the right side of the law!  This is largely from an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion point of view, but this could also mean member discipline, employment law, health and safety and GDPR.  Your EDI policy and Disciplinary Policy will be the guiding documents here. Will golf properties be "off the grid" energy self sufficient by incorporating on-site renewable energy sources such solar power to achieve their sustainability goals? To open Season 16, host Colin Weston and guest Petra Himmel explore the spectrum of sustainability issues surrounding the golf industry, from plastic use in golf balls to the environmental and social benefits of urban golf courses. https://media24.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads-2024/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/S7bgqRSJ.jpg (https://www.youtube.com/@modgolfpodcast/videos) "You really have to believe in the future otherwise you could give up at once. We currently have all these erosion, flood, wildfires and heat wave stories that are impacting golf clubs. Climate change doesn't really care if we care or not. It's just there. We just have one chance to get it right, so we either react in time or we will struggle. There are so many experts predicting that you either start preparing for it or you just don't have a chance to survive economically as a golf club. If you are in the wrong region or if you aren't prepared, then you will not make it. The good thing is that we have possibilities and solutions."... We follow on the back of the recent England Golf/GCMA Governance Workshop series that moved around the country.  Leighton is joined by some real thought leaders in the industry, Tom Brooke - GCMA, Matt Draper - England Golf and Amelia Lewis - Players 1st.   The discussion centres on a summary of five points that clubs should be thinking about to improve their governance or get their governance on the right track.  It's a great chat with some really good areas covered such as the importance of good governance to your members, people being clear on roles, starting with reviewing your governance and "culture" at your club. It's a new year, a new PGA Tour season, and a new guest who's trying to play every golf course in Massachusetts. Our first episode is the year is here, hosted as always by Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell. The new PGA Tour season begins with The Sentry, where only one of the top 3 players in the world is contending (1:56). The OWGR released changes to how points will be dolled out, including for the new "signature events" on the PGA Tour, which include no cuts (sound familiar?) (5:45). 2023 was a huge year for the podcast, and 2024 looks to keep growing on that success. What's in store for us? More travel, and more golf, of course (8:15). Alex used the holiday weekend to catch the new movie Anyone But You, and Michael asks how it compares to 2023's No Hard Feelings (14:02). Our first guest of the New Year is Sean Melia, editor of the New England Golf Journal. Sean has a mission to play every golf course in Massachusetts, and shares some of his favorites, and reminisces with Alex about their shared hometown course, Concord Country Club (16:13). The New Year included a lot of fireworks, and Michael really doesn't understand why it's so excessive (47:22). The NFL season is nearing its conclusion, and that means Alex and Michael horrible no good very bad season can end (49:17). In #AlwaysEndWithFood, it's all about the January diets, and how maybe that can springboard to some wholistic life changes, you know, like it does every year (52:32). Support our friends! Does club golf for you revolve around turning up and chucking balls in the air, or are we now hooked on the concept of booked tee times?  Covid considerably changed the landscape of how some of us play our golf and in this week's From the Clubhouse podcast, in association with TaylorMade Golf, Tom Irwin and Steve Carroll consider what's on offer at clubs and whether the humble roll up has passed its sell-by date. Tom and Steve explain how mixing with lots of different players was pivotal in their early experiences of the game, but they also look at how important knowing exactly when you're going to play is for a modern time-poor generation. The pair also look at whether a hybrid mix can suit everyone, while Steve has a World Handicap System plea for those who make roll-ups the majority of their time on the course. England Golf's Awards, Tom's travails with tailoring, and an impromptu Rules quiz are also in the mix, so what are you waiting for? That play button won't click itself.

England Golf's new pilot Championship Entry policy, which could potentially deny access into some competitions for players with too many general play scores in their handicap records, has catapulted the controversial World Handicap System back into the headlines. But has the governing body's actions, which are designed to ensure integrity and a high standard of entrants, exposed a deeper issue within WHS? On this week's From the Clubhouse, a podcast from National Club Golfer, Tom Irwin and Steve Carroll look in detail at the new policy, discuss what it will mean for those golfers who could be affected, and whether it shows that WHS is flawed. The duo look back at the old CONGU handicap ways - refusing to don the "rose-tinted spectacles" worn by some when reflecting - and consider the impact England Golf's pilot could have on our own competitions as clubs wage war in the fight against handicap manipulation. Do club committees need to do more, or are they hiding behind a shield of the perceived ills of WHS? WHS has been an emotive topic ever since its introduction in late 2020, and Steve and Tom don't hold back expressing some strident views. Where do you stand? It's certainly an interesting listen... This week is Women and Girls' Golf Week. It's an initiative launched by England Golf and supported by all the other home unions, the R&A and all the leading bodies in golf.   The concept of the week is to promote golf as not only a fun game for all genders and ages, but also a career option for ladies in what has traditionally been a very male dominated industry.   Here at BIGGA we have very few female members, numbering around just 20 in an association of almost 6,000 greenkeepers and that's pretty representative of the overall greenkeeping industry.    However, the ladies who do work in the profession speak of it with great affection, enjoying the lifestyle and the opportunities for career progression that it offers.   One of those ladies is Caroline Munro, who works at Bonar Bridge and Ardgay Golf Club up in the Scottlsh Highlands.   Caroline is the only greenkeeper working at the nine-hole golf club and so all the responsibilities for the preparation of the course rest on her shoulders.   Hers is a fascinating story and I hope you enjoy our conversation, recorded when I dropped in to visit Caroline a couple of months ago.   If you'd like more information about Women and Girls Golf Week, head to the England Golf website. You can also read Caroline's story in the July edition of Greenkeeper International and on our website.                                                                                                                     BIGGA has launched an HR service, available to every greenkeeper member.   Many small businesses don't have a dedicated HR professional as part of their staff. They're seen as a luxury that you just can't afford. And as such, matters such as employee handbooks, staff development and training, complaints and feedback, hiring the right individuals or overworking will be swept under the carpet and not dealt with effectively, making for a less than ideal working environment.   BIGGA has teamed up with Xact to provide every member with access to free help and advice to make your workplace a more professional and positive environment.   A team of qualified advisers will be on hand to assist BIGGA members with any HR problems that arise, with instant advice just a phone call away.   The advisors can help from the very early stages through to the conclusion of the matter and telephone and email advice is available for each case.   The helplines are available from 9 til 5 Monday to Friday.   The service is completely confidential and no contact will be made with your employer. The only things they'll ask for when you call are your full name, your start date at your current employer and your BIGGA membership number, just to make sure that your membership is still active.   Head to the BIGGA website to find out more. Hosted from 30 May to 2 June 2019, the Brabazon Trophy took place at Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds.    The Brabazon is the short name for the English Men's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship. Notable winners over the years include Guy Wolstenholme, Michael Bonallack, Sandy Lyle, Ronan Rafferty, Charl Schwartzel. Alwoodley is a spectacular inland course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, who went on to design Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. However, Alwoodley was the first course he designed and so is known as the Original MacKenzie.   Set on Wigton Moor, Alwoodley is a natural heathland course and as such has springy fairways, areas of heather and natural-looking bunkers.   Responsible for maintaining the course for the competition was acting course manager Matt Brighton. Matt took over the role in March following the retirement of long-term course manager and BIGGA life member Philip Taylor.    BIGGA's Membership Services Manager Sandra Raper stopped by Alwoodley to find out how the team was getting on and to deliver some pork pies to keep them going.    While there she sat down for a conversation with Matt and James Crampton, the director of championships at England Golf, to discover what it takes to host a major amateur event. Away from the cameras and glamour that characterises The Open or other professional events, the greenkeeping team at the clubs that host amateur competitions want to put on a show of equal quality. However they must often do so with fewer resources and a smaller team, making the challenge even greater.    Also mentioned in this week's podcast are the BIGGA Awards, for which nominations have opened. The awards are an opportunity to recognise the incredible achievements of BIGGA members. We're looking to find out about those teams who have hosted a major event, like the team at Alwoodley, or perhaps they've completed a major project such as the renovation or rebuild of their course on limited resources. Maybe they've done incredible work to further the reputation of the greenkeeping profession – which can be charity work or just a lifetime of dedication? We want to hear each of these stories, so if you're a greenkeeper and you know of someone who's worked incredibly hard or you're just a member at a golf club and want to see your team recognised for their efforts, the BIGGA Awards are the place to go. Head to our website to find out more and there's also a link in the show notes.   As it's National Volunteer Week, Sandra also spoke to a pair of BIGGA members who have given up their free time to help out at the event.    30-year-old Jason Norwood is a greenkeeper at Rudding Park in Harrogate, while 29-year-old James Dawson is a greenkeeper at Oulton Hall in Leeds.   Sandra spoke to the pair about their reasons for volunteering at the Brabazon Trophy and how they'd found the experience so far. So thank you to Matt, James, Jason and James for talking to us, and thank you to Sandra for being our roving reporter on the day! Image courtesy of Leaderboard Photography.
