Sheldon Kennedy never dreamed of being a 20-year-old kid who would be in and out of psych wards. He never dreamed of being in a hospital on suicide watch, and he never dreamed of going through drug and alcohol treatment eight times. But that became his reality. From a young age, Sheldon was sexually abused by his junior hockey coach, Graham James, a prominent figure in his hockey community. And for 11 years, Sheldon struggled in silence — the first five while the abuse was going on, and the following six during which still no one else knew the truth about what had happened to him. As Sheldon rose through the ranks of professional hockey, the weight of his secret drove him down some dark paths. It wasn't until 1996, when he came forward with what had happened to him, that Sheldon could finally see a future for himself as a husband and a father. Still, looking back on his NHL career is complicated because there are feelings of shame and guilt around who he was. What he does take pride in is the fact that he can be happy now – scars and all. In 2014, Sheldon was honored with the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian ranking. And to him, that should be a symbol of hope for anyone struggling to become the person they did dream of becoming.   *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. *** In light of revelations that the NHL Chicago Blackhawks covered up a case of sexual abuse of one it's players by a member of it's coaching staff, we are re-posting this powerful interview with former NHL player and sexual abuse survivor Sheldon Kennedy. This interview originally aired in January, 13th, 2021. *** ***This interview contains subject matters and details that may not be appropriate for young listeners. *** Sheldon Kennedy is one of Canada's leading campaigners in the fight against child abuse. The retired NHL veteran and founder of the Calgary Child Advocacy Centre joins National Chief Bellegarde to discuss ways in which the pandemic has made child abuse worse, what can be done to improve that, his own history of abuse by his hockey coach as a teenager, and how telling that story gave him the strength to get his own life on track and help others, including First Nations survivors of Residential Schools. And, on a lighter note, Kennedy talks about how winning CTV's Battle of the Blades renewed his love of skating. Sheldon Kennedy played eight years in the National Hockey League, with the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins. As a teenager he led the Swift Current Broncos to a Memorial Cup championship, the best team in Junior Hockey. But it was also at Swift Current that Kennedy was sexually abused for years by his coach, Graham James. When Kennedy revealed this abuse publicly towards the end of his pro career, Graham James was convicted and sent to prison. He has since been convicted for the abuse of several more players. For Kennedy, this marked the start of a life dedicated to supporting and speaking out for sexual abuse survivors. His leadership, including founding the Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary and the Respect Group, saw him being awarded the Order of Canada in 2016. A big thanks goes out to the Red Dog Singers of Treaty 4 Territory in Saskatchewan for our theme music. The Ahkameyimok Podcast is produced by David McGuffin of Explore Podcast Productions.

In the fall of 1996, the Canadian sports world was rocked by a major sex abuse scandal. NHL player Sheldon Kennedy courageously went forward to police to reveal he suffered years of abuse at the hands of his childhood coach, Graham James. When Kennedy broke his silence, it started an important conversation around sexual assault and opened the door for others to do the same. In 1997, James pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two former players -- including Kennedy. He admitted to sexually assaulting the boys hundreds of times. Since then, according to the Parole Board of Canada, there are six victims named on his record but the board notes he’s “admitted to have had sexual intercourse with around 20 hockey players he was coaching ... using manipulation, control and his position of trust and authority to facilitate the assaults.” One of the other hockey players James has admitted to sexually assaulting, is former NHL star Theo Fleury. In this episode of the Global News podcast, Crime Beat, crime reporter Nancy Hixt shares the stories of four men who James abused as boys. Learn the shocking details of how signs were ignored -- so were outright requests for help from hockey officials. These men now work every day to empower victims and take control back from their abusers. Guest: Scott Newark, former Alberta crown attorney, former head of the Office for Victims of Crime in Ontario, past senior policy advisor to the federal Minister for Public Safety - Canada has two official languages, English and French - yet in Vancouver, a condominium Strata Board has voted to conduct all its AGM business in Mandarin. Andreas Kargut, an English-only speaking condo owner in the 54 unit complex, is filing a human rights complaint which has been accepted by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.  In July it appeared meetings between lawyers for the Mandarin speaking condo owners and their English speaking counterparts had arrived at a solution which would have the AGM business conducted in English and translated into Mandarin. At the last moment, the Mandarin-speaking owners reportedly reneged. Board members issued a media release arguing conducting board business in Mandarin makes sense because Mandarin is the first language of Board members and the decision conforms with multiculturalism in Canada. Guest: Andreas Kargut, condo owner, board member and lead complainant - Travis Vader was found guilty of second degree murder in the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann of Alberta, both in their late 70s and travelling by motorhome, towing a second vehicle. The bodies of the McCanns have not been found. DNA and mobile phone evidence connecting Vader to the McCanns was circumstantial, although Vader had possession of both McCann vehicles, as well as many of their belongings. Trial judge Denny Thomas based his conviction of Vader on Section 230 of Canada's Criminal Code, which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional in 1990. How could this happen and what happens to Vader now?
