#181 Fit for a Cowboy - Tyler McCann, Wyoming Cowboy Cuts

It's the middle of calving season for ranchers, and if you don't know what that means, you're not alone. Tyler and Angela McCann fifth generation ranchers and owners of Wyoming Cowboy Cuts can tell you. It's when the cows are giving birth to their baby calves and as Tyler says, averages about three a day. That's intense work and Tyler admits he's rather tired as he gives his interview. Calves are born and raised on the undulating sagebrush steppe of the family's Hancock Ranch and when weaned from their mother cows, travel 72 miles to Tyler and Angela McCann's farm. There, the beef cattle reside in irrigated pastures, and, in addition to their grass diet, eat a corn, oat and barley grain supplement. The McCanns' daughters, the family ranch's sixth generation, often pet the beef cattle at their twice daily grain feedings. Here's the family story on how all this came about. Angela's grandfather and grandmother purchased the ranchlands where, today, the McCanns' cattle graze. When Angela's grandparents married, her grandfather owned a saddle and bedroll, and her grandmother had a few cooking pots and a sewing machine. The McCanns' honor their family's hard work by furthering the ranch business's environmental and financial sustainability for the next generation — their daughters. The family is the epitome of the American Dream. Technically, the ranch is a commercial beef herd raising a mix of Red Angus, Black Angus and Hereford cattle. The idea of “finishing beef” started about 12 years ago when Tyler and Angela married. Finishing is a process of essentially fattening up the cattle with the corn and grain feed instead of selling off the cattle after only grazing them in the pasture. Deciding that they would be losing money on the grazed cattle by selling them at auction, they chose to keep and finish the cattle and found the taste after processing was incredibly good. That led to the path of selling their choice beef direct to the public and eventually added pork and lamb to the product line. Business must be good, as a look at their website shows they are sold out of almost every offering. The company will ship their products, but shipping from central Wyoming poses some challenges. Luckily, the McCann's have experienced such high sales locally that they haven't had to do much shipping. The process of landing that delicious piece of beef on someone's plate is quite an odyssey. The McCann's time their calving for the spring of the year and after the calves reach around six weeks of age, the branding activity begins. That's when the company has a solid count of future cattle and the mothers will then continue to raise their calves through the summer. In the fall, the company begins gathering the herd in the pasture, which is 56 square miles in size. The cattle are in pairs, mother and calf, so the calves need to be weaned away then sorted into steers and heifers (boys and girls for us beginners). The ranchers then select the best heifers to keep breeding then sell the majority of steers to a backgrounder, someone who will take the steers from their weight of a little over 500 pounds and put them in a yearling program, meaning keeping them in pasture another summer. The McCann's also take the cattle they keep and put them in the same program where the beef will grow to the 850-950 pound range. They are then brought to the pasture for the finishing stage, being grain fed twice a day and checked carefully for any maladies. Occasionally, the lucky ones even receive a name (check the website). The company has found that the grasses in their pastures produce a unique flavor and have been experimenting with the combination of grasses and cross-breeding to offer multiple flavors of their products. #ChristianBrückner #MadeleineMcCann #kateandgerrymccann madeleine Beth McCann (born 12 May 2003) disappeared on the evening of 3 May 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment at a resort in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve region of Portugal. The Daily Telegraph described the disappearance as "the most heavily reported missing-person case in modern history".[3] Her whereabouts remain unknown,[4] and German prosecutors in 2020 have stated that they assume that she is dead.[5] weki Madeleine was on holiday from the UK with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann; her two-year-old twin siblings; and a group of family friends and their children. She and the twins had been left asleep at 20:30 in the ground-floor apartment, while the McCanns and friends dined in a restaurant 55 metres (180 ft) away.[6] weki The parents checked on the children throughout the evening, until Kate discovered she was missing at 22:00. Over the following weeks, particularly after misinterpreting a British DNA analysis, the Portuguese police came to believe that Madeleine had died in an accident in the apartment and that her parents had covered it up. The McCanns were given arguido (suspect) status in September 2007, which was lifted when Portugal's attorney general archived the case in July 2008 for lack of evidence.[7][8] The parents continued the investigation using private detectives until Scotland Yard opened its own inquiry, Operation Grange, in 2011. The senior investigating officer announced that he was treating the disappearance as "a criminal act by a stranger", most likely a planned abduction or burglary gone wrong.[9] In 2013, Scotland Yard released e-fit images of men they wanted to trace, including one of a man seen carrying a child toward the beach that night.[10] Shortly after this, the Portuguese police reopened their inquiry.[11] Operation Grange was scaled back in 2015, but the remaining detectives continue to pursue a small number of inquiries described in April 2017 as significant.[12][13] In June 2020 the police in the German city Braunschweig announced that they suspect a 43-year-old convicted sexual predator, who they identified only as "Christian B" due to Germany's privacy laws, as being responsible for McCann's disappearance. The suspect was later identified as #ChristianBrückner in several publications.[14][5] weki --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

Madeleine McCann was just 3 years old when she seemingly vanished into thin air. The little girl from England disappeared from her bed while she, her family and their friends were on vacation in a holiday apartment at a resort in Praia da Luz in Portugal in 2007. Madeleine’s whereabouts remain unknown, but interest in the child’s fate has only grown in the years since she went missing. WTF Moments:Madeleine Beth McCann disappeared on May 3rd, 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. A group of family friends were traveling together. The adults of this travel group was eventually known as the "Tapas Seven"- because they dined at a tapas restaurant each night at the resort. Each night, Gerry and Kate left their back porch of their apartment unlocked and took hourly shifts back to the apartment to check on the kids.Kate noticed Madeleine was missing from her bed when she went to check between 9:30 and 10.Immediately following this horrific discovery, Kate ran back to the restaurant and everyone begins a frantic search for Maddie.Witnesses said they saw a man carrying a blonde child about Madeleine's age on the night of her disappearance. Police drew a sketch according to the public description - with zero facial features. Literally just a circle with a bit of hair.At the time, The Telegraph reported there had been an unusually high number of assaults on young girls in the area. The report said: "Police identified nine sexual assaults and three 'near misses' on British girls aged between six to 12 in the three years before Madeleine went missing. In one case from 2005, a ten-year-old girl was assaulted in an apartment Praia da Luz, close to the spot from where Madeleine vanished."Another theory is that Maddie was taken as part of a bungled burglary in which an intruder panicked and snatched her after she woke up. While Scotland Yard looked into this theory it has always been dismissed by cops in Portugal since nothing else was taken from the apartment. It has been claimed Portuguese authorities framed the McCanns in a desperate attempt to save the tourism trade in Portugal. They didn't want people to think that Portugal was the kind of place where children were unsafe, and such horrible crimes could take place, so they pinned it all on Kate and Gerry McCann. The two authors who appeared in the Netflix documentary said they believe that Madeleine was the victim of a planned abduction and that she is still alive.Check out our website!Contact us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/cocktailsandconspiracies?)

Netflix's eight-part review of the Madeleine McCann case, The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann, is journalistically rigorous -- but is it rigorous to a fault? Eve returns to look at the series, its organizing principles, its indictment of tabloid media's role in the case, and how we think the case would "play" if Madeleine disappeared today. The bleak possible outcomes continue in the Cold Case section; we're looking at Who Took Johnny, a 2014 documentary about the 1982 disappearance of Johnny Gosch in West Des Moines, IA. It's a watchable film that at the same time isn't good, but provides an interesting contrast with TDOMM in what it chooses to highlight, and whom it chooses not to question. Bennett goes on to point out the lack of evidence for the mainstream narrative. He looks closely at evidence the Portuguese and British police collected by two highly trained cadaver dogs and the McCanns strange reactions when confronted with this evidence. DOUBT: The Madeleine McCann Mystery :Nick van der Leek & Lisa WilsonDid the little girl at the centre of the most heavily reported missing-persons case in modern history ever go “missing” to begin with?If Madeleine was never abducted, if she died on May 3rd, why was it reported as an abduction?Despite the absence of a trial, what we have now is a fairly precise version of events from the McCanns themselves, a by-product of their relentless PR. We also know the original lead investigator, Goncalo Amaral's, counter-narrative, now a legally defensible matter of public record. The questions that arise from these opposing narratives are dead simple:Which narrative is more credible?Which narrator is more credible? What was the motive behind all the publicity? Neither Madeleine nor her abductor ultimately benefited from the ongoing media barrage, so who did?True crime maestro, Nick van der Leek, plumbs quagmires of confusion and a thicket of thorny inconsistencies to probe what lies beneath: the psychologies. What is the significance of "doctors" as suspects? Did it matter or mean anything that the McCanns and their cabal of friends in the Algarve were mostly doctors?Peeling away the gossamer threads, over the course of just four days [April 29th – May 2nd], van der Leek intuits that very little was routine: not the weather, not where meals were eaten, not where or when they slept and not what they did as a family. But what were their routines when it came to other, murkier things, like sleeping patterns, cell phones and sedatives?Drawing intangibles out of the darkness, van der Leek sews the vexing loose ends from several conflicting stories into a definite - if not definitive - end-result.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

Guest: Scott Newark, former Alberta crown attorney, former head of the Office for Victims of Crime in Ontario, past senior policy advisor to the federal Minister for Public Safety - Canada has two official languages, English and French - yet in Vancouver, a condominium Strata Board has voted to conduct all its AGM business in Mandarin. Andreas Kargut, an English-only speaking condo owner in the 54 unit complex, is filing a human rights complaint which has been accepted by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.  In July it appeared meetings between lawyers for the Mandarin speaking condo owners and their English speaking counterparts had arrived at a solution which would have the AGM business conducted in English and translated into Mandarin. At the last moment, the Mandarin-speaking owners reportedly reneged. Board members issued a media release arguing conducting board business in Mandarin makes sense because Mandarin is the first language of Board members and the decision conforms with multiculturalism in Canada. Guest: Andreas Kargut, condo owner, board member and lead complainant - Travis Vader was found guilty of second degree murder in the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann of Alberta, both in their late 70s and travelling by motorhome, towing a second vehicle. The bodies of the McCanns have not been found. DNA and mobile phone evidence connecting Vader to the McCanns was circumstantial, although Vader had possession of both McCann vehicles, as well as many of their belongings. Trial judge Denny Thomas based his conviction of Vader on Section 230 of Canada's Criminal Code, which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional in 1990. How could this happen and what happens to Vader now? Guest: David Butt, criminal lawyer, editorialist - Singer songwriter Jonathan Roy co-writes with and is on the Siena label owned by Corey Hart.   Jonathan's father, Patrick Roy, is without question one of the Montreal Canadiens and National Hockey League's greatest goaltenders.Jonathan Roy made international headlines in 2008 when he skated the length of the ice in a Quebec Remparts Major Junior hockey game and attacked opposing goalie Bobby Nadeau while being coached by his father Patrick. Today, music is Jonathan Roy's focus and love. For Karen McCann and her husband the prospect of early retirement left them feeling a little bored. They had always been avid travelers and a visit to Seville in Spain convinced them that it would be the perfect place to start a new life. They moved with their dog in 2004 and have loved life there ever since. Karen’s past career as a journalist has led her on to becoming a successful travel writer with two of her travel books already achieving No 1 status on Amazon. The couples experiments in travel – including a nomadic journey through the railways of Europe and a journey they made completely without luggage have allowed them to embrace their new lifestyle and do things they would never have done back home. We caught up with Karen to discuss the process of moving, life in Seville and how becoming an expat allows you the freedom to truly enjoy yourself. You’ll find details of Karen’s books and her blog at her website http://www.enjoylivingabroad.com What I learned from Karen’s interview: Be prepared for paperwork if moving to Spain. They are experts in it! The McCanns have to regularly renew their visas and do find that things may differ between what the internet tells them and what they might find out when they get to the consulate. This is the Spanish way of life and you need to embrace it. Make sure you start your visa process in your own country before leaving to allow more time Be willing to try before you buy into it permanently. The McCanns rented their Cleveland home for six months to make sure they were happy in Seville before returning to sell up. Being clear on what you want is important as you will feel some emotional pull during the process and you need to keep reminding yourself of your objective. It’s not difficult to relocate pets. The McCanns were able to move their dog reasonably easily with them but be conscious of their new environment and whether it is a large contrast to what they are used to and if they will be happy there. Spain is a step back to a more simpler time. Siestas are still the way in the southern regions and house calls by doctors are still quite common! The Spanish love the family environment and for many westerners moving it’s the return to the simpler life that often brings back memories and has the greatest appeal. Don’t overpack! I love the experiments these guys do and their journey without luggage sounds like fun. It’s interesting to know however that not having nightwear is the one thing that a luggage-less traveler will struggle without! For about life in Spain check out our interviews with Molly Piccavey and Alan and Heidi Wagoner

This week on What's the Story? we break out the tinfoil hats and divert to a secret location as we talk conspiracy theories. Our guest is the brilliant and hilarious Gordon Rochford from the iTunes "Best of 2015" podcast, "Those Conspiracy Guys". We had a return to house keeping this week after a brief hiatus where Danny tells jokes, Lindsey asks about UFC 197, Mero talks Louis Theroux with Gordon and we briefly pay tribute to Lemmy, David Bowie and Alan Rickman. Gordon then gives us an insight into the world of conspiracies where we talk about Madeline McCann and if there is more to the missing girl's story than meets the eye? Why were Kate and Gerry McCann named as suspects? Who or what is the "Tapas 9"? Are there unfounded allegations against the McCanns or is there something more sinister? We also talk Werewolves, Santa Clause and Bigfoot before moving onto some of the biggest conspiracies out there, September 11 and the assassination of the US President, John F. Kennedy. All of this and we barely scratched the surface! You can learn more and hear all the details on these, and many other conspiracies, on Those Conspiracy Guys' Podcast available on iTunes or on their website www.thoseconspiracyguys.com

Facebook has apologised to drag queens, and those with transgender status, after it closed some accounts following reports they were fake because they weren't using their legal names. However, a coalition met with Facebook at its headquarters in San Francisco, and they can now use their pseudonyms. Steve Hewlett talks to Lil Miss Hot Mess, who organised a rally in San Francisco against the policy, and to Misty Chance a drag queen in Manchester, who changed his name legally, rather than having his online profile removed. Also joining Steve is Emma Carr from Big Brother Watch, and tech journalist Rupert Goodwins about some of the wider issues the story has uncovered.Another story this week which has raised questions about our online identity is that of Brenda Leyland, who was found dead after being challenged by Sky News over accusations of 'trolling' the McCanns. Steve is joined by Emily Bell, Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University in the US, to discuss whether anonymity should be allowed on social websites, or are the benefits of remaining anonymous outweighed by the costs? And a parliamentary committee is to ask every police force in the UK how many times they have obtained the telephone and email records of journalists without their consent. Keith Vaz has called for a detailed breakdown of police use of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), which forces telephone companies to hand over phone records. It was recently revealed how police investigating 'Plebgate' obtained the telephone records of Tom Newton Dunn, the Political Editor of the Sun, in this way. Steve Hewlett talks to Keith Vaz, chairman of the home affairs select committee about the scope of the inquiry.Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
