Then, in his early fifties, he had a wake-up call. It sent him to look under a rock he'd never lifted, where he found “an absolute cavern of issues.” The result is his sixth book, The Future is Grey: The Untapped Value of Age in the Workforce. Dan lays out the coming “bell to bulb” demographic inversion and the risks for organizations ignoring it. For individuals, he reframes the whole arc of a working life, from the language of generations (which he rejects as an ageist cognitive bias) to three universal career eras: Rivers, Rocks, and Rubies. That demographic inversion means experience will become more scarce and valuable. The through-line is don’t retire, rewire instead. He shares stories of people who kept working or returned to work in a different way, which brings his concept of the “experience dividend” to life. ________________________ Bio Dan Pontefract is a renowned leadership and culture strategist, author, and keynote speaker with over two decades of experience in senior executive roles at companies such as SAP, TELUS, and Business Objects. Stijn Schmitz welcomes Mining Stock Monkey to the show. The discussion centers on navigating the current commodity cycle with a disciplined, downside-protection-first approach. He emphasizes that while structural tailwinds like electrification, AI infrastructure, and global poverty reduction support a broad commodities bull market, selectivity is critical. He starts by identifying historically cheap commodities—where low prices eventually cure low prices by curbing supply and boosting demand—and then evaluates individual companies on their risk-reward profiles. Nickel tops his list, but he exclusively seeks high-grade nickel-sulfide deposits, avoiding laterite projects due to severe environmental and human rights concerns in Indonesia. Potash also appears cheap, with BHP's delayed and over-budget Jansen mine potentially discouraging new supply; he notes producers like Nutrien and Mosaic, though he favors royalty exposure through Altius Minerals. In oil and gas, equities are undervalued at spot prices, but the futures curve points to a sharp decline, making him cautious. He prioritizes protecting against large losses, explaining that avoiding a 75% drop is far more valuable than chasing outsized gains. On precious metals, he views the gold bull market as mature after a decade-long run, yet acknowledges that endless money printing and the weaponization of the dollar could drive prices infinitely higher. He is reducing exposure to riskier gold miners and favors royalty companies like Royal Gold, citing its superior margins, built-in growth, relative undervaluation, and potential S&P 500 inclusion as key downside protections. Silver, however, raises concerns: a parabolic chart pattern and the fact that over a billion rural Asians hold silver as savings could trigger massive selling if they cash in on recent price spikes, potentially flooding the market. He also briefly notes that thermal coal's chart resembles a classic bottoming pattern worth investigating. Sustainability is talked about everywhere these days, but what does it actually mean for agriculture? In this episode, we sit down with Carlos Romero, Senior Sustainability Manager at Nutrien Ag Solutions, to break it down in practical terms. For Carlos, sustainability isn't abstract, it's good agronomy that works both economically and environmentally. They discuss how Canadian farmers are putting this into practice through 4R Nutrient Stewardship and no-till farming, and how Nutrien is helping scale those efforts through its FarmSmart programs. From supporting large-scale nitrogen initiatives to helping growers access sustainable incentives, this episode explores how sustainability is measured, rewarded and expanded across Western Canadian agriculture. TENNESSEE WATER WARS: DUCK RIVER PIPELINE SPARKS BATTLE OVER DEVELOPMENT AND LOCAL CONTROL On this episode of Rural Route, Trent Loos welcomes Dustin Kittle from central Tennessee for a powerful discussion about water rights, reckless development, and the growing fight for local control. Dustin breaks down the controversial $520 million Columbia water pipeline project that would pull 32 million gallons of water per day from the Duck River—one of the most biologically diverse rivers in America. He warns that the project is being pushed to support rapid development while ignoring serious environmental risks and the long-term needs of local communities. The conversation exposes major concerns about transparency and accountability after Columbia Power and Water customers were hit with a shocking 150% water bill increase without warning. Dustin and Trent also examine growing tensions at city council meetings where citizens are being limited to short speaking times—even when massive infrastructure decisions are on the line—raising serious First Amendment concerns. Trent and Dustin dig deeper into the broader issue of water scarcity, warning that water could soon become more valuable than oil. They argue that agriculture and food production must be protected from industrial expansion that threatens water supplies and rural communities. The Duck River, which serves more than 250,000 people, is already considered one of the most endangered rivers in the country due to overdevelopment and infrastructure strain. The discussion also shifts to national agriculture policy, including concerns about a $700 million regenerative agriculture fund and the role of global fertilizer giant Nutrien. Trent raises alarm over the lack of farmer representation in government decisions and the growing financial pressure forcing many farmers out of business. The episode concludes with a hard look at crop protection challenges, herbicide controversies, and the urgent need to defend farmers' ability to produce food while holding corporations accountable.

In this episode of Talk Dirt To Me, we kick things off with a rant every rural American can relate to, idiots driving on icy roads, avoidable wrecks, and Bobby Lee's road rage when common sense disappears in bad weather. From there, we dig into Rep. Tim Burchett's warnings about the Big 4 meat packers, why consolidation in the beef industry should concern every cattle producer, and our honest thoughts on the NCBA including how heavily they cater to the interests of the Big 4 and what that means for independent ranchers and cow-calf operators. We also break down Deputy USDA Secretary Stephen Vaden calling out Nutrien and Mosaic for alleged fertilizer price manipulation and supply control in the U.S., plus why John Deere is now catching heat in Washington as scrutiny ramps up on corporate power in agriculture. We wrap things up by responding to listener comments and emails, tackling questions and feedback straight from the audience.

When it comes to crop inputs, farmers are looking for more than a salesman in the field – they need an advisor. One partner that can help shape decision making that keeps them profitable, efficient and sustainable all while driving yield to make their operations successful. It's a tall order and one this week's guest loves to welcome as a challenge. Danny Carmony, Central Indiana GM for Nutrien Ag Solutions, joins AgriNovus' VP Libby Fritz to talk consistency, serving in that advisory role over multiple generations and what innovations have him most excited for the future of the industry.
