Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan (www.eastleighfarm.com) shares the biggest news affecting smaller family farmers, starting with the Farm Bill. The House is working on another draft Farm Bill, continuing with the hold up. Additionally, the U.S. House passed the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 (H.R. 8467) on April 30, 2026, with a 224-200 bipartisan vote, advancing a new five-year farm bill that strengthens crop insurance, raises commodity reference prices, and reauthorizes USDA programs through 2031. The bill now faces a difficult path in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. The Farm Bill also contains significant changes to SNAP (food assistance), which has been a major point of debate, with many questioning why this is even included on this bill at all. Moving along, a new study suggests people living in areas with heavy pesticide use face significantly higher risk of cancer. The research suggests that combinations of pesticides, even those considered safe individually, can act together to damage cells, suggesting environmental exposure is a major, previously underestimated factor in cancer rates. Regions with high agricultural activity, specifically the US Midwest, showed significantly higher cancer incidence, with some estimates suggesting risks comparable to or higher than smoking for certain cancers. The study found that "pesticide cocktails"—combinations of chemicals (like Glyphosate, Atrazine, and [Dicamba])—multiply cancer risk, rather than any single chemical acting alone. Even pesticides deemed "non-carcinogenic" individually by regulatory standards appear to contribute to cancer risk when combined in the environment. Researchers identified that these mixtures can disrupt liver cells—a primary detoxification organ—years before a cancer diagnosis. The study linked higher exposure to increased rates of leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and cancers of the bladder, colon, lung, and pancreas. In case you missed it, May is Mental Health Month. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Farm State of Mind campaign, supported by the Farm State of Mind Alliance formed in 2025, works to reduce mental health stigma and increase access to resources for farmers and ranchers. The initiative provides a national directory, free counseling, and training to support mental wellness in rural communities. Founded by AFBF, National Farmers Union, National 4-H Council, and Farm Foundation, the Alliance brings together trusted voices to make, “It's okay not to be okay,” a standard in agricultural communities. The campaign utilizes initiatives like farm-focused mental health articles in magazines and on TV. The campaign emphasizes May as Mental Health Awareness Month to reach out to neighbors in the agricultural community. For more on the American Family Farmer…Website: AmericanFamilyFarmerShow.comSocial Media: @GoodDayNetworks

Dicamba is available again for over-the-top use in XtendFlex cotton, but the path back comes with a label that demands planning, discipline, and proof that we can keep applications on target. We sit down with weed scientists Dr. Pete Dotray (Texas Tech) and Dr. Stanley Culpepper (University of Georgia) to translate what changed for 2026 and 2027 and what those changes mean when you are trying to cover acres on real timelines. We walk through the biggest shifts growers and applicators will feel immediately: a two-season registration window, required training, heavier documentation, updated droplet language, and tighter stewardship expectations around drift and volatility. Then we slow down and unpack the new temperature-based approach using National Weather Service forecasts, including how the 84°F, 85–94°F, and 95°F thresholds can  limit acres under certain conditions, and potentially push dicamba applications earlier in the season. We also cover the practical pieces that decide whether a spray stays clean: VRAs and DRAs at the correct rates, boom height, wind speed, inversions, time-of-day rules, rainfall and runoff language, and how downwind buffers can be managed with mitigation credits and defined managed areas. The conversation also turns to paraquat, why the product matters across agriculture, and why uncertainty in supply or training infrastructure would ripple through conservation tillage and harvest aid programs. The bigger takeaway is simple: resistance is not the only threat to the herbicide toolbox anymore. Lawsuits, regulation pressure, and public narratives are shaping what stays available, and stewardship is now part of keeping tools on the farm.

Three different dicamba herbicide products are making a comeback in 2026 with new labels and new rules for use from EPA. Whether farmers are aiming to use BASF's Engenia, Syngenta's Tavium, or Bayer's newly-renamed Stryax products, there are some changes that farmers and their applicators need to be aware of. That's why today, DTN Crops Editor Jason Jenkins is here to walk us through the very latest updates on the legal use of dicamba products. He'll talk us through what's changed on the labels — from temperature restrictions to acid equivalence per acre limitations — and what's stayed the same, especially in terms of safety precautions. Then, he'll clarify some of the recent confusion around the annual maximum usage amounts, and talk us through some state-specific regulations that sit on top of the federal label in specific geographies. Finally, we'll learn more about the new Endangered Species Act points system that's rolling out this year, and talk about where farmers can get more information about staying in compliance and using these products safely.

His research program focuses primarily on herbicide resistant weeds, where he looks at the discovery of new types of herbicide resistance, characterizing those types of resistance, and then monitoring where resistance is occurring across the Canadian prairies. In this episode, he shares about the growing incidences of resistance across the Canadian Prairie, the types of resistance, why resistance in weeds like kochia is spreading so fast, and what the research is telling us about trying to reverse this troubling pattern. “About 70% of the fields that are annual crop production in the region have at least one type of herbicide resistance present. So group one and two resistance in wild oat, I mean both the in-crop options that we have in small grain cereals, for example. But in kochia, we have resistance, so widespread resistance to group two to the point it's not even worth testing for. Glyphosate resistance is in about 75% of the samples that we test. We then have resistance to auxin mimics, which would be group fours, primarily Fluroxypyr and Dicamba. And more recently we've identified group 14 resistance or PPO inhibitor resistance.” - Dr. Charles GeddesThis Week on Growing Pulse Crops:Dr. Charles Geddes is a research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Understand the growing incidence of herbicide resistance across the Canadian Prairie and what the research suggests needs to happen to resist this concerning trendExplore different options for weed management that can be used in conjunction with herbicide use such as competitive planting techniquesLearn more at the Prairie Weed Monitoring Network WebsiteGrowing Pulse Crops is produced by Dr. Audrey Kalil and hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is reminding pesticide applicators of state-specific restrictions for the use of dicamba herbicide for the 2024 growing season. Engenia by BASF, Tavium by Syngenta, and XtendiMax by Bayer are the only dicamba formulations labeled for use on dicamba-tolerant (DT) soybeans. In Minnesota, dicamba products cannot be applied on DT soybeans after June 12 south of Interstate 94 and after June 30 north of Interstate 94.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's a nationwide rift among farmers over the use of dicamba, a popular herbicide. A recent federal court ruling from 2024 halted dicamba's use, but the Environmental Protection Agency has given the green light for farmers to use existing supplies this year. In this episode of Us & Them, we revisit a story from our archives that delves into the intense battle unfolding in farm country. Originally designed to help soybean farmers combat 'pigweed,' dicamba has proven controversial, drifting and causing harm to both weeds and desirable plants. The legal fallout has reached a point where farmers and gardeners hesitate to speak out about crop or plant damage due to fear. On the flip side, those advocating for dicamba have taken the matter to court, challenging the authority over pesticide use rules in the state. In a departure from the typical tight-knit atmosphere of rural farm communities, where issues are often resolved through a meeting at the “turn row,” Arkansas is experiencing an un-neighborly atmosphere, with tensions escalating.
