One of the things near the top of my "Reasons to Retire" list last Fall was freeing up some time to be more involved with Goderich Little Theatre.People in the arts are my people: Weird, wonderful, creative, sometimes insecure, sometimes so full of themselves they need to be taken down a notch but always the people that at least for me, make life worth living.I'm full of happy adrenaline today to be chatting with two of those people! We set out to promote the latest show for Goderich Little theatre and ended up with so much material we decided to split it into two parts. So this week, we will chat with the director of the show, my long time friend, Nina Reynolds and the Manager of the Livery Theatre, Cara Loft. We'll talk about GLT, a bit about the show, and then we will get to know a few of the actors in the play on next week's episode.

Dust the cake with a little icing sugar to serve, if desired. The success of this cake depends on the butter being nice and soft; leave it out of the fridge for about 6-8 hours for it to soften naturally.  185g butter, softened at room temperature 150g caster sugar 150g (1 heaped cup) self raising flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 100g ground almonds 2 free range eggs, beaten 2 tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 250g fresh blackberries 2 tbsp raw or demerera sugar 2 tbsp flaked almonds Preheat the oven to 180C (fan forced 160C). Grease and line the base of a 20cm springform or loose bottom cake tin. Dice the butter and place the butter, caster sugar, flour, baking powder, almonds, eggs milk and vanilla into a bowl and beat with an electric mixer for 3-4 minutes, or until just combined. Fold in the 3/4 of the fruit. Spoon into tin. Scatter with the remaining fruit, the raw sugar and the almonds. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until firm and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Leave to cook in the tin for 10 minutes, before cooling on a wire rack. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Rethink Priorities Existential Security Team's Strategy for 2023, published by Ben Snodin on May 8, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The Rethink Priorities Existential Security Team's Strategy for 2023 Summary This post contains a moderately rough, high-level description of the Rethink Priorities Existential Security team's (XST's) strategy for the period April-October 2023. XST is a team of researchers focused on improving the world according to a longtermist outlook through research and other projects, and is part of Rethink Priorities (RP). Note that until very recently we were called the General Longtermism team (GLT). We have now renamed ourselves the Existential Security team (XST), which is slightly more descriptive and more closely reflects our focus on reducing existential risk. XST's three focus areas for 2023 will be: Longtermist entrepreneurship (65%): Making highly impactful longtermist projects happen by finding and developing ideas for highly promising longtermist projects, identifying potential founders, and supporting them as they get these projects started. Our main activities will be: Identifying and detailing the most promising ideas for longtermist projects, with a goal of having ~5 detailed project ideas by the end of June, that we can bring to a potential meeting of talented entrepreneurs in July/August, organized by Mike McCormick. A relatively brief founder-first-style founder search (looking for highly promising founders and finding projects that they are an especially good fit for). Exploring founder-in-residence MVPs (hiring potential founders and giving them space to develop their own ideas for promising projects). Supporting founders once they're identified. Strategic clarity research (25%): Research that helps shed light on high-level strategic questions relevant for the EA community and for people working on reducing existential risk. This year, we plan to focus on high-level EA movement-building strategy questions (such as “What kind of EA movement do we want?” or “What's the optimal portfolio among priority cause areas we should aim at building?”), and possibly on high-level questions that seem important for assessing whether and how to help launch entrepreneurial projects. Most of our work on this will happen in the second half of the year. Flexible time for high-impact opportunities (10%): Time allocated for i) team members working on projects that they are very keen on and ii) highly impactful and time-sensitive projects that arise due to changes in external circumstances. Concrete outputs we'll aim for: 5 project idea memos by the end of June that are of a standard equal to or better than the 2023 Q1 megaproject speedruns that we posted on the EA Forum in February. 1 strategic clarity research output by the end of October. 1 new promising project launched by the end of October. 11 publicly shared research or project idea outputs by the end of the year. From mid-May onwards, we're planning to have 4 FTE executing this strategy: me (Ben), Marie, Jam, and Renan. Linch is pursuing a separate research agenda related to longtermist strategic clarity. The high-level timeline is: [completed] March: The team winds down current projects and begins work on executing the team strategy from the start of April. [in progress] April-July: The team focuses on the entrepreneurship program, and works on founder-first activities, founder support, and project research. The project research is focused on generating a new prioritization model and shallow project ranking by the end of April, and 5 project ideas memos by the end of June for a potential meeting of promising entrepreneurs in July/August. August-October: Jam and Ben continue working on the entrepreneurship program, while Marie and Renan switch to strategic clarity research. Start o...

At Coffee and Creed Bishop Thomas did an open Q&A panel, we didn't record the panel but we were there and took notes and now we discuss with real live young adult Shannon Savoy! Put the lid on and process. Once it looks like everything is broken up a little, begin to stream in the olive oil. When it starts to thicken, add the soy sauce, lemon juice and Worcestershire, then the remaining olive oil. Finish with the cream and a bit of water to loosen it to a thick but drizzly consistency. Add a few cracks of fresh black pepper and check and adjust the seasoning. Refrigerate until ready to use.·2.To make the salad, heat the olive oil in a small sauté pan over a high heat and add the dry capers. Ensure they are as dry as you can make them to avoid too much splatter. Allow the capers to sizzle a little and, when they have almost finished sizzling (meaning most of the water has evaporated), scoop them out and dry them on a piece of paper towel. Reserve the oil.·3.Tear bread into rough pieces and add to the pan. Use the caper oil and some more olive oil, if needed, to shallow-fry croutons over medium heat. You want to fry the bread on a couple of sides, but you don't want it to be completely crispy. You want a bit of soft chew with a crusty exterior. Try to do this in one layer so that you don't overcrowd the pan. This might mean you need to do it in a couple of batches. Season croutons with salt and pepper.·4.Spread the tonnato on the plate first, then cut up the tomatoes into thick slices and arrange on top. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Scatter the croutons over the top. Finish with fried capers and fresh picked basil leaves. Serve immediately.

Happy New Year to you all! I wish you joy and prosperity in 2022! Red Stag is excited to be able to offer a unique, exciting opportunity to an exceptional Operations Manager in the Engineered Wood Product (EWP) sector. If you are an exceptional Operations Manager or similar, here is a great opportunity to drive a brand new Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) plant in Rotorua.  Planned on the site of the Toronto Police Service Property Unit — a stretch home to mostly light industrial uses west of the denser Town Centre area — the building will stand out from its nondescript surroundings with a sleek bunker-like exterior that harnesses the sun to power the critical paramedic equipment housed within. The structure of the first floor is mainly Glue-laminated timber (GLT) , and corewall system is concrete structure. The sequential wooden structure system, just like the roots of orchids, grows freely and regularly, supporting the main body of the building.

Amber Young has lived on four different continents. She grew up in California to a family that loved to travel. And so after finished college at UC Santa Cruz, she decided to move to New Zealand. She spend the year volunteering on farms and hitchhiking around the country. Then she moved to Australia, where she worked for the next year, including a job picking strawberries. After that, she wanted a big change so she moved to Japan to teach English with the JET program. She lived in a small village in Japan for the next two years. And then she lived in Spain for three years teaching English. While some may be worried about her hitchhiking and CouchSurfing experiences, Amber says, "In the eight years I lived abroad I never got robbed. I never had anything bad happen to me." Haley Woods from Girls Love Travel. Gotta love this girl.  Such an inspiration that I had to feature her on the show, she travels 100% for work and travel the world.  She also created the super supportive travel community for women to grow and support one another.  I stumbled upon this group, and now I am addicted, and I am not the only one! With over 12,000 followers in one month, Girls Love Travel has made record breaking numbers.   Haley Woods is the founder of the group, and she just happened to be in Pittsburgh for work.  We scheduled a GLTMeetup, and I had her over Chez Mazzoni for a recording about her origins, how GLT came to flourish, and where it is headed. So many amazing women from all over the world, proves that even if you are not with people in person, you can be connected to them around the world.  As a solo traveler, I have made the greatest friends and connections through this group, and will continue to do so.  Be sure to check them out, and enjoy Haley's awesome stories. I will be promoting certain ladies from the group when I can on my podcast, and I wanted to do that here with the extremely talented Chrystyna Marie.  I sent a post out on the group page looking for any talented musician that I can help push, and she wrote back instantly. I am now addicted to her song "Loaded Gun."  Check it out at the end of the episode, and check out her new album that drops Feb 29th!!!   If you want to be considered as a guest, promotion, or sponsor for the podcast, email me at martafoos@gmail.com                                                             Also thank you to the gals that submitted pictures! Here are some of the chosen ones for this episode, I will be featuring ladies traveling pics on all of my travel episodes!
