When then-triple j breakfast hosts Alex Dyson and Matt Okine decided to surprise Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ray with news she'd won a competition through the station's Unearthed initiative, they did not head to her place of work. Nor did they go to her place of residence. Instead, they ended up at Princes Hill Secondary College, where Ray was a student. A prodigious singer and budding songwriter, Ray could not have predicted the ensuing years of national and international touring, millions of streams and a steady ascent to the top of Australian pop's echelon. Now barely in her 20s, a debut studio album awaits - but not before a quick Bar Bands debrief on her choral background, conquering festivals, genre code switches and meeting her heroes. Gretta Ray's debut album Begin to Look Around arrives August 27 via Ballarat/EMI Music Australia. Special thanks to Mariam Dib. Recorded by David James Young and Gretta Louise Ray. Gretta Ray performs 'Cherish' before covering Gang of Youths 'The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows' for Like A Version.
Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ray’s first release of 2021 introduced an innovative concept in new music sharing: Duologies – two songs joined in theme but creatively distinct, issued as a pair. She dives into her songwriting process and explains the concept behind Bigger Than Me and Readymade – which are both songs about her relationship with creativity, which she admits is something that she can become obsessive about.
Gretta Ray is a natural when it comes to songwriting. She was already kicking arse as a teenager when she won the Vanda & Young songwriting competition for her song Drive back in 2016. Since then she has released some impressive singles and an excellent EP and her debut album ‘Begin To Look Around’ will be out in August of this year, nice one Gretta! We discuss how we met 10 years ago when Gretta was a kid singing in the Young Voices Of Melbourne children’s choir (who featured on a Miami Horror song), we talk about John Mayer not wanting to play Your Body Is A Wonderland (just play it John ya dick!), our resistance to Tik Tok, how difficult it is to write a great pop song and a bunch more. Since the release of her second EP towards the end of 2018, Gretta Ray has been pretty quiet on the new music front. However, behind the scenes there’s been a lot of work going on. Exploring new collaborations, and growing as a person herself, the now 22yo Melbourne singer has been refining her sound and song writing. With a lot more new music to come in 2021, Gretta premiered her new single ‘Passion’ with Richard Kingsmill, speaking to him about the ground she feels she’s covered on the song, the challenges behind writing it, and what she’s learnt about herself from working with others the last two years. She also touched on her recent single with Japanese Wallpaper, reflecting on how her connection with him dates back to her final year at school when she was on the eve of winning Unearthed High in 2016.
