Veterans are once again dominating Congress. The start of the 119th Congress has 100 Veterans across both sides of the aisle. Veterans by and large focus on teamwork and getting results. To kick off the excitement behind the new Congress, Fran Racioppi spent a few snowy days on Capitol Hill with the members of the For Country Caucus; a bi-partisan group of House of Representative members who have each served across America's military. Representative Don Davis is an Air Force Academy graduate, a two term Congressman representing North Carolina's 1st District, and the Vice Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, as well as a member of the Subcommittee on Readiness and the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces. With the strength of American military power front and center, Fran asked Congressman Davis to explain just what the next battlefield may be, how ready the American military is to combat both terrorist organizations and near-peer nation states, as well as the role of Special Operations in the next conflict. They also broke down the efforts of DOGE, Elon Musk and the application of the age old military sayings “slow is smooth, smooth is fast” and “speed and violence of action” gets things done. Watch, listen or read our conversation from Congressman Davis's office. Don't miss our full coverage from Capitol Hill. Special thanks to For Country Caucus for setting up this series. The Land Forces weapons expo is Australia's largest get-together and money-making opportunity for the booming business of war. When it came to Melbourne in September, activists from Students for Palestine and Disrupt Wars protested the orgy of militarism and violence. In response, the Victorian police unleashed hell, firing rubber bullets and torrents of pepper spray at protestors. The media followed up with a barrage of lies about protestors, presenting anti-war peace activists as the violent thugs while cheering on extreme police violence. Emma spoke to Bella Beiraghi, one of the protest organisers, to get an insider's perspective on the protest and its aftermath. This is the Land Forces exhibition special feature with some random highlights from the show last week. These included an uncrewed 8-wheeled armoured ground vehicle enabled by AI and designed by BAE Systems to operate with conventional forces. Also SPEE3D, an Australian company using additive manufacturing to undertake in-field repairs. Despite international success – including sending units to Ukraine – do you think the Australian Army has bought any? A few words about Hanwha, the South Korean company that has gone from obscurity to now being the largest supplier, by dollar value, to the Army. They have announced that Sydney-based Advanced Navigation will become part of their global supply chains, which should be a huge boost to business. And some unexpected success – Chief of the Army has agreed to an interview to discuss the Taipan helicopter fiasco (my words, not his). Let's hope other senior figures also push back against ridiculous Ministerial interference in what they can say in public. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Violence has erupted in Melbourne's CBD. Over 1,500 anti-war protestors yesterday descended on the Land Forces expo, the largest event of its kind in the country where businesses and start-ups spruik their products to defence forces and contractors. Those rallying were there to protest not only the war in Gaza, but also the wider implications of war – from human rights violations to its impact on climate change. Footage of the clashes showed aggression on both sides, with officers and protestors both needing medical attention after day one of the three-day event. Over 1,000 officers were involved in the response, with rubber bullets, tear gas and flash bangs used on protestors, and there have since been calls for an independent review of police actions towards those involved with the protesting. Given high tensions since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, and wider conversations about war and the place it has in our modern world – these protests were almost guaranteed to be a tinder box of emotions. So, who is to blame for the violence we witnessed? And what exactly where these protestors hoping to achieve? For this episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert speaks to those attending the rally on day two of the event, to speak to protestors involved on what they think about the violence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hello and welcome to another iteration of the Monday Breakfast show with Rob and Eric. This episode features: An interview from Yeah Nah Pasaran on Thursday 8th August in which Cam and Andy speak with Aurelien Mondon (lecturer in politics at University of Bath, and co-convener of Reactionary Politics Research Network) about racist rioting in the UK and Belfast in the wake of the murders in Southport. You can catch Yeah Nah Pasaran, 4:30pm Thursdays on 3CR, and listen back the the full interview with Aurelien by heading to their program page. On Saturday the 16th of August between an estimated 150 people attended a counterprotest on the steps of the Victorian Parliament to disrupt an event held by TERF and founder of the Women's Action Group Michelle Uriaru. A heavy police presence asserted their dominance by preventing the counterprotesters, a group of trans people, allies, and anti-fascists, from getting too close to the crowd of transphobes. However, the counterprotesters were able to disrupt the event by not only outnumbering the terfs but also playing music which the counterprotesters would dance to. To help capture the moments of Queer and Trans Joy in the crowd at that counterprotest, Rob spoke to a few of its attendees. The first was recorded while the counterprotest was happening outside state parliament; the second was recorded at Fitzroy Park, where the TERFs were supposed to mobilize following their 'rally' but didn't for reasons unknown. On Monday 5th August, Karina sat down with Jeremy Poxon from the Australian Unemployed Workers Union, in Coburg Mall. They discuss the day's intended activities (leafletting Coburg's welfare recipients attending some of the area's worst-rated Job Service Providers), plus a look at the Govt Inquiry into Workforce Aus, so-called 'mutual' obligations, the AUWU's campaigns and initiatives around welfare rights, and more. The AUWU National Advocacy Hotline is open Monday to Friday 10 AM - 2 PM AEDT,Ph: (03) 9811 7064 or (freecall) 1800 289 848. To hear the full interview, catch Wednesday's City Limits show from 9 - 10AM. From the 8th to the 14th of September the biggest weapons expo in so-called Australia will take place at the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre. Its existence hasn't attracted much attention in the mainstream media, despite the fact that companies supporting genocides will be there. However, the planned disruption, as listeners will have undoubtedly heard about through announcements on 3CR, has. To speak more about the event and coverage of the planned disruption, Rob spoke with Nat Farah, an organiser for Disrupt Wars.Last week researched released by the Grounded Community Land Trust Advocacy provided insight into exactly how Airbnb is compounding housing shortages and pushing rental prices beyond the reach of people both across the globe and here in 'Australia'. To find out how the global conglomerate does so, Rob talked with Karl Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Grounded Community Land Trust Advocacy and former 3CR broadcaster. Songs played: 'Black Magic' - Baker Boy ft. Dallas Woods'Rebel Girl' - Bikini Kill

Acknowledgement of Country// Headlines// Last Friday 21st June, Disrupt Land Forces had its first public meeting (at Black Spark, Northcote) to plan actions in protest of 'Land Forces', a massive weapons expo and conference which will be running this year from September 11-13 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Ongoing actions in the previous host-city Magandjin (Brisbane) forced the conference to relocate to Naarm, and Disrupt Land Forces hope this year for the same - if not greater - level of disruption of harms dealers and their investors, both at the event and in the week leading up to it. Before the planning meeting various frontline community members and activists spoke of their experiences at the hands of the global military industrial complex, and the importance of international solidarity against imperialist structures. On today's show, we played a speech from the event by Adolf Mora, West Papuan community member and activist. Content warning: this speech includes mention of suicide in detention. If you are feeling distressed, you can always call lifeline on 13 11 14 or the suicide callback service on 1300 659 467. Amanda Villalobos, local activist and participant in community pickets of AW Bell, joins us this morning to speak about the upcoming picket at AW Bell this Monday the 1st of July, aiming to close operations for the day to disrupt the company's role in the global supply chain of Lockheed Martin's F-35A Lightning II aircraft or Joint Strike Fighter. Find out more about the action and keep up to date by heading to Weapons Out Of Naarm on Instagram.// Researcher and organiser Matilda Byrne joins us to speak about Australia's place in the artificial intelligence and autonomous capabilities arms race, which she recently authored an article about for Declassified Australia. By marketing itself as a site for AI innovation and framing this issue as a key area of defence policy, Australia is deeply embedded in global networks of weapons development further integrating autonomous functions into technologies of war and genocide. Matilda is currently undertaking a PhD at RMIT's Social and Global Studies Centre where she is a sessional lecturer in international relations, security, global governance and disarmament. She is the National Coordinator of the Australia Stop Killer Robots campaign, based at SafeGround, an Australian non-for-profit that seeks to reduce impacts of legacy and emerging weapons.// Martin Hodgson, senior advocate at the Foreign Prisoners Support Service and co-host of Curtain the Podcast, speaks with us about the colonial crisis of domestic and family violence in so-called Australia. This conversation occurs in the context of Martin's recent appearance at a Parliamentary hearing held as part of the ongoing inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children. While the Senate referred an inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee on 4th August 2022, the inquiry process continues, with the reporting date extended to 15th August 2024. Content warning: this interview includes discussion of domestic and family violence, femicide and racism. Our Watch is a national leader in the primary prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia, and Karla appeared alongside CEO Patty Kinnersly to provide evidence on the significance of primary prevention and the importance of attending to colonialism and racism in the context of the inquiry.//

Episode Summary: In Episode 127 of the Aerospace Advantage, A Conversation with Rep Rob Wittman (R-VA): Congressional Insights, John Baum and Lt Gen Dave Deptula, USAF (Ret.), chat with one of the leading national authorities on defense. After three decades of sole superpower status, the United States finds itself stretched thin as it struggles to deal with the rapid rise of an assertive China and an increasingly aggressive Russia, along with a nuclear weapons ambitious Iran and North Korea. While not existential threats, non-state aggressors in the Middle East, Africa, and beyond demand attention too. This scope of concurrent security demands, ranging the full spectrum of the threat envelope, places an extremely heavy burden on the U.S. defense establishment. Decisions made by Congress are critical to addressing these factors—whether from a policy, budget, or oversight vantage. This episode will explore these challenges through the eyes of Rep Rob Wittman (R-VA), the Chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces and a member of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. These two committees collectively cover Air Force fighters, bombers, UAVs, airlifters, cargo aircraft, munitions, and much of the R&D portfolio.
