Pope Francis hosted the inaugural World Children's Day, a Vatican initiative held from May 25 to 26 at Rome's Olympic Stadium and St. Peter's Square. The event drew around 50,000 children spanning more than 100 nationalities and featured conversations between the young participants and Pope Francis. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and actor Roberto Benigni were also in attendance. With the event, the pope hoped to raise awareness about children's plight in war, promote global peace, care for the environment and empower the younger generation. On the show, producer and guest host Ricardo da Silva, S.J. and veteran Vatican reporter Gerard O'Connell discuss this unique event and the Vatican's ongoing efforts to foster peace and dialogue among warring factions worldwide. Later, Gerry reflects on “20 Days in Mariupol,” the award-winning film he saw at the Vatican. The documentary, screened as part of a special event hosted by the British and Ukrainian embassies to the Holy See, exposes the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine. It highlights the horrors of war and underscores the crucial role of journalists in uncovering the truth. In Episode 1.6 Until All of Us are Free, None of Us are Free we focus on the fundamental connections between the struggle for an end to the genocide in Gaza and the liberation of Palestine and Palestinian people with oppressed peoples everywhere. In particular in this episode we recognise interconnections and entanglements across the movements for prison abolition, queer and trans liberation, and for disability justice. You'll hear recorded speeches from Turtle Island (US)-based Black lesbian abolitionist Prof Andrea Ritchie at last November's Sisters Inside conference, and from trans woman and abolition organiser Necho Brocchi at Magandjin's Trans Day of Resistance gathering that took place on November 25, 2023. Both of these speakers trace the importance of recognising the co-constitution of struggles for an end to incarceration and to oppression and violence against trans people with the struggles for Indigenous sovereignty and to end the genocidal settler-colonial occupation of Palestine. Also in this episode, you'll hear Han in deep discussions with queer Palestinian academic and community organiser Fahad Ali, and with Wiradjuri, Irish and Flemish disability justice organiser and writer Vanamali (Mali) Hermans. And we have extracts from an interview conducted by Anna in collaboration with Belle from 4ZZZ's Only Human with deaf Palestinian Mazen Al-Khaldi, who went viral for his video sharing how to sign “Free Free Palestine” in Auslan, the sign language of the majority of the australian deaf community. If you've just found your way to our podcast, our aim is to archive the ongoing movement for Palestinian liberation as it unfolds on the unceded lands of the Yuggera, Yugarapul, Jagera, Turrbal and Yugumbeh peoples, across so-called brisbane and the surrounding cities of south east queensland. You can start here with Episode 1.6, but you might want to scroll back a bit further to begin with Episode 1.1 Settler Colonialism and the Current Crisis. This podcast is produced and recorded on unceded Jagera & Turrbal country. ⏳ Advent 2 - Wage Peace with Shel Boese NT Wright notes, "There is no insight, no vision of truth, so noble and lofty that it cannot be perverted and made an instrument of human pride. Likewise, there is no small glimmer of light, no faint echo of reality, so small or corrupt that it cannot be taken into the service of the world's creator and rightful Lord...All truth is God's truth." The Peace Jesus brings is not passive—it calls us into action and satisfies our hearts' longings. But we do wage a battle with various ideologies wanting to claim us vs. the way of Jesus. How do we fight these battles? Paul gives us some insights we will learn this Sunday. ADVENT 2 Wage Peace with Shel Boese 2 Corinthians 10:1-11

Land Forces is the largest land based weapons expo in the Southern Hemisphere. Wage Peace is organising, for the second year, a festival of resistance from October 1-7 in Meanjin-Brisbane. We speak with Walpiri elder Ned Tjampijinpa Hargraves about the Karrinjarla Muwajarri campaign that is a calling for a ceasefire and no police guns. Rolfe was charged with murder and the case went to the supreme court but in March 2022 Rolfe was aquitted. The community is still seeking justice. Uncle Ned has taken the Karrinjarla Muwajarri campign to Meanjin-Brisbane for Disrupt Land Forces because the main manufacturer of police bullets is the company NIOA, a major sponsor for Land Forces 2022. NIOA formed a partnership with Winchester in 2021 and together the two companies dominate the law enforcement market. In 2021 they successfully tender for the bulk of armaments supply to the NT police worth a total of $1.8 billion. We also speak with peace & anti-military campaigner and event organiser Andy Paine about what's planned for the Disrupt Land Forces 2022 festival of resistance.

This episode dives into the divide between Climate Camps. Camps that believe, that deny, that oversimplify. I start with a speech by S. Brian Wilson and lead into an article by Daniel Pinchbeck and speak of Charlies Eisenstein's book on Climate. I feel that beneath all the "trying to prove a stance" going on, there is a purpose for all of the camps. This Week in the Middle East with William Morris of the Next Century Foundation
Russian President Vladimir Putin's avid interests in Ukraine right now include two points. First, Putin wants Kyiv to accept the autonomous status of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in Donbas. Second, he wants a guarantee that Ukraine will not join both NATO and the EU. Even though Putin explicitly expressed that Russia would not annex the Donbas region, recent actions of Russia raised grave concern. On the 21st of February, Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) and the Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), which worried Ukraine about a full-scale military offensive. Three days later, on the 24th, following the recognition, Putin launched a military operation in Ukraine, announcing that the forces will protect the people of Donbas and “demilitarize and denazify” Ukraine. The two republics have been seized by Russia-backed separatists after the overthrow of Ukraine's pro-Kremlin president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. Seizing the two southeastern oblasts is not the only concern of Putin now. NATO's expansion is an existential threat to Putin and therefore, he described Ukraine's aspiration to join the alliance as a “hostile act”. In December 2021, among Putin's security demands presented to the US and NATO was Ukraine would never enter NATO and that the alliance would roll back its military footprint in Eastern and Central Europe. Additionally, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky's ambition is also to let Ukraine join the European Union. On the last day of February, he signed an official application for EU membership. This affects Putin's red line in Ukraine.BUT HOW DO WE GO ABOUT GETTING PEACE INSTEAD OF WARSupport the show (https://www.justgiving.com/tncf)

It's a Friday and boy, do we need a weekend. Today, we'll deal with a couple of the big issues facing our world. We'll start with the end of our occupation of Afghanistan after 20 years. The mainstream corporate media coverage has been a lot of finger pointing and blaming the current administration, while inviting the people who got us into this mess in the first place are being interviewed as if their views mattered! We've also learned that anti-war organizations have been excluded from all coverage. We'll remedy that with a visit from Stephen Miles, executive director of Win Without War. Then, we'll segue to one of the other major crises of our time -- the ongoing Republican effort to curtail your right to vote. I'll speak with Lala Wu, co-founder and executive director of the Sister District Project, who are focused right now on passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and winning and safeguarding fair and free elections.

(00:00-09:43): Vanessa Bryant expressed grief and anger in an Instagram post Monday as she copes with the deaths of her husband Kobe Bryant, their daughter Gigi and seven other people in a helicopter crash last month. Brian and Ian discussed this and the importance of expressing emotions during times of grief. (09:43-37:54): We are joined by the Ministry Director for Alpha, John Wentz. He shares his remarkable family origin story as he grew up in the carnival. His father built a funnel cake stand and would travel from carnival to carnival selling cakes. He did not grow up in the faith, and never experienced Jesus until his senior year of high school. John then talks about the purpose behind Alpha. It is a platform for people to come and express their doubts and questions about their faith. He discusses the role of prayer in Alpha, and how it takes a back seat on the forefront, but the leaders pray behind the scenes. They want to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. (38:57-49:37): David Brooks writes “The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake” in The Atlantic. The family structure we’ve held up as the cultural ideal for the past half century has been a catastrophe for many. It’s time to figure out better ways to live together. "We have decided to go out of our way to make the biggest, the most special night of the year for people with special needs because they're worth it and they're special," (1:11:11-1:18:22): Brian and Ian’s “Weird Stuff We Found on the Internet”: A new species of savage otter was discovered in Florida, and Hell is for real.
